Insomniac Details the Confusing Way to Upgrade Marvel's Spider-Man to PS5 via Tweet

Insomniac tweeted: "So you can get the PS4 edition of the game, upgrade to PS5 for free (if you get disc version, you must have a disc-drive PS5 tho!). Then from inside the game on PS5, you can upgrade to the Ultimate Edition (aka, download MSMR for $20)"

I really hope they scrap this and learn from it on their other games. It's not anti-consumer as you are getting exactly what you pay for, no one is taking it away. But it's just so clumsily managed and not friendly that it's going to confuse people and ruin expectations.

A less confusing way to do this is to wait for an extremely deep sale on Miles Morales UE to get both at $30.

morganfell1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

I do not find it confusing. If you own Spidey on the PS4 and you buy a PS5 you get the PS5 Peter Parker Spidey upgrade for free. If you want, there is a menu option in the PS5 version, that you just got for free, that allows you to purchase PS5 Miles Morales for 20 bucks. So if you own the PS4 version of SpiderMan you get the next gen version and Miles Morales next gen for $20.

Christopher1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

The fact that this tweet directly has to correct what someone thought on how it worked shows it's confusing. Great you understand it, but many consumers won't. Let alone many won't even know they could just go into their existing Spider-Man to get the upgrade that way and instead will spend $40 on SM:MM and not get the SM upgrade and will then have to pay even more for it.

It's an unnecessary complication.

morganfell1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

The real confusion in all of this has come from the press. It has been unmitigated in the past day. I just saw a remark on these forums, a failed story, and someone that I normally respect wrote, "that's what people on forums and twitter have been saying" implying that people, with no real connection to the game, who did not bother to get the facts are simply sounding off so now that is suddenly gospel.

Respectfully I will say it is necessary. In order to maintain the chain of purchase for an actual version, disc or digital, this had to be done. They are taking a hit giving away Miles Morales for $20. That is a loss no doubt so some of that is financially equalized by a customer having bought either the PS4 version of Spider-Man or the PS5 MM edition.

EDIT: If you are saying this is a matter of advertising then that is another issue altogether. That isn't confusion per se. It s also a far cry from the blasting that has been unjustly handed out by the press.

Christopher1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

Press sucks. I'm not going to disagree there. But, Sony, on this specific item, should have gone a much more friendly and open route.

For something most gamers aren't likely to even play on PS5 because they're looking for new games and not looking to play older ones, I think they could have taken the hit here and just made free upgrades for those that own the game (and DLC if owned). And entice people to complete both by having new suits tied to the completion of the game and each DLC.

The game sold 9m+ on PS4. They're not hurting for money and they want to encourage people to move to the new hardware (a hefty investment alone), not make them feel like Sony is trying to get more money out of them for a single game.

LOGICWINS1310d ago

"So if you own the PS4 version of SpiderMan you get the next gen version and Miles Morales next gen for $20."

Thanks for clarifying!

RaveTears1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

You actually got it wrong, lol. Here is an example so you can understand:

•Spider-Man PS4 -> ( PS5 Backwards Compatibility) -> Spider-Man PS4 Enhance version.
•Spider-Man Miles Morales PS4 -> (PS5 free Upgrade) -> Spider-Man Miles Morales PS5
•Spider-Man Miles Morales PS4 -> (PS5 $20 Upgrade) -> Spider-Man Miles Morales Ultimate Edition (Bring Spider-Man Remastered)
•Spider-Man Miles Morales PS5 -> ( $20 Upgrade) -> Spider-Man Miles Morales Ultimate Edition
•Spider-Man PS4 ≠ (No PS5 Upgrade) ≠ Spider-Man Remastered
•Spider-Man PS4 ≠ (No $20 or free Upgrade) ≠ Spider-Man Miles Morales PS4/PS5/ Ultimate Edition

morganfell1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

They are not hurting for money. Define hurt? If Sony had more money to freely use then perhaps Bluepoint would already be a Sony Studio. Its relative, especially in light of the news this week. They are having to compete in a space where the competition is throwing everything at the wall with the backing of one of the wealthiest companies in the world.

Insomniac were literally working on 3 games at once. Companies lose money at launch. That is a fact. Sony is still losing money on the this PS4 to PS5 MM upgrade.

I do agree that the advertising of this feature should be much more broad and in the public's face because frankly its a deal. I think it would be an attraction so yes Sony should banner this often. But I do not think they have the cash to simply bandy about.

I am not sure what you mean by this: "...I think they could have taken the hit here and just made free upgrades for those that own the game ..."

EDIT: Never mind, I see what you mean and I agree.

morganfell1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

""So if you own the PS4 version of SpiderMan you get the next gen version and Miles Morales next gen for $20."

Thanks for clarifying!"

The confusion is there is an Spider-Man upgraded version AND a remastered version and those two are not the same thing and Sony has not made this clear at all.

BillyG0AT1310d ago

It's more confusing than the Xbox naming system

Knushwood Butt1310d ago

Cool. I have Ps4 Spidey on disc, unplayed.

Tacoboto1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

"If you own Spidey on the PS4 and you buy a PS5 you get the PS5 Peter Parker Spidey upgrade for free"

You are confused because... That is not how it is at all. That is wrong. There is no PS5 Upgrade for the PS4 Spider-Man game. The game is playable via BC. Nothing special.

Spider-Man Remastered is the only upgrade there is to the PS4 game. You cannot buy it from the PS4 game. You can only get it from the $70 Ultimate Edition of the PS5 Miles Morales or from a $20 upgrade of the base PS5 MM or PS4 Miles Morales when used on a PS5.

Again, there is no path to upgrade from PS4 Spider-Man to PS5 Spider-Man Remastered. I'm also pretty sure based on the separate SKUs that Sony is so backwards you can't expect the PS5 disc to work in a PS4.

Bathyj1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

No. You got it backwards. And reading the tweet I don't blamed you.

If you buy ps4MM vanila it upgrades. You can pay 20 extra in game on ps5 to get Spiderman remastered.

You have to buy MM.

Forget your PS4 spider-man. That's irrelevant. It doesn't upgrade or factor into this. It's a coaster. (Or you can play it BC on ps5)

Spiderman remastered is basically DLC for MM.

Ready4nxtgen1310d ago

So what if I have Miles morales downloaded

--Onilink--1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

You do not find it confusing.. and yet you actually got it completely backwards haha.

If you own MILES MORALES on PS4, you get the free upgrade for MILES MORALES PS5 and then from within MM PS5 you get the option to pay $20 for the PETER PARKER remaster.

If you own PETER PARKER spiderman digitally on PS4, you get nothing else, other than playing it through BC on PS5 with mild enhancements. If you want the remaster, you need to purchase the ultimate edition on PS5 and if you want MM, you have to pay $50, not $20

The worst case scenario in terms of confusion is if someone is on ps4 and just bought the Peter parker spiderman and now wants to wait for the remaster to play it, that person will have to double dip to do it + buy miles morales

UltraNova1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

Jesus what's clusterf***

Spiderman PS4 is useless on PS5 unless you want to play it again via BC.

Spiderman MM: Buy it on Ps4? You can play the upgraded version for free on PS5.

You want to play Spiderman OG remastered (*which is only available on ps5)? You have to a) buy the 70 dollar Ultimate edition, or b) go in Spiderman MM's menu and pay 20 dollars for the UE upgrade.

The takeaway here is that yes Insomniac/Sony should have never allowed this to get this far, and they should have given existing Spiderman PS4 owners the option to upgrade to the UE on the ps5 for 30-40 dollars.

Father__Merrin1310d ago

It was the same at the start of last gen. Anything to put playstation down and create a fictional doom and gloom aura about Sony. All these so called journalists they are clearly rooting for xbox so it's natural for them to "hear voices, voices in the head"

Give it 6 months to a year we are likely see playstation in full swing in the meantime I would like to ask these journalists have they actual xbox series X gameplay?

boing11310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

By Spidey you mean Miles Morales, right? Because you can't upgrade to anything if you have Spider-man 2018. You can only upgrade Miles Morales PS4 to PS5 and then to Ultimate from inside the game if you want remaster too. There is no Ultimate version for PS4.

UltraNova1310d ago

Father__Merrin

Yes it's the same as every other console gen, i.e you wouldn't expect to get TLOU remastered for free on ps4 because you owned it on ps3. Same goes for all other console publishers.

The problem here is that Sony should have forseen this and be crystal clear from the start but the way they've communicated gave people hope of getting the remaster for free...this mess was easily avoidable.

morganfell1310d ago

If I am wrong then I am wrong. It would not be the first time here or elsewhere. Unlike some I have never had an issue saying that on this board and I have done so several times in the past. And if I am wrong it is because of direct misdirection by Insomniac. And it hinges on a single word. There is no Ultimate edition of Spider-Man. But there is an Ultimate Edition of Miles Morales. And that is what they said the upgrade would provide. Then in parentheses wrote download MSMR which is Marvels Spider-Man Remastered. So if I have it wrong it isn’t arrogance on my part (nothing like having someone post something and then be so angry they have to pm you with a personal attack) but rather it’s a testament to the lack of delineation in the entire affair.

darthv721310d ago

@Nova, in regards to the LoU remastered... why couldnt Sony have done the same thing EA was doing with battlefield? If you have the PS3 disc, you could put it into the PS4 and pay $10 to get the PS4 version of battlefield. Other games did a disc to digital upgrade for a period of time as well. Sony could very easily have done the disc to digital for God of war 3 remastered, LoU remastered and they can do it with this spider man remastered. The disc validates you have it and then you get a discount on digital upgrade to a next gen version for a low price.

Kryptix11310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

Reading these comments, it's hilarious how confusing it actually is.

There's some actual magic to it. When you finally admit that what Sony is doing with this whole ordeal is anti-consumer by not providing a free upgrade to the base game, the actual meaning of how it really works gets revealed to you. The people who don't see that get it wrong and the people who do gets it right. LOL

Slightly reworked textures shouldn't mean an extra $20 these days. When I buy a new graphics card and it allows me to output better textures, tessellation, anti-aliasing, frame rate and a higher resolution, I don't have to buy the game a second time.

Ju1309d ago

" shows it's confusing." ... just shows the closer we are getting to ideocracy. How is this confusing? Do you need a degree to figure this out?

It won't be all that confusing for the masses. Pretty sure it'll just give you. Simple prompt when you put the disc in, or automatically apply a discount in the store if it's already installed on your ps5

Christopher1310d ago

But you have to know that's an option. For people who played it in 2018, they're not going to install or put in the disc for Spider-Man (2018) to get the upgrades. They're just going to buy the latest via the store. But the latest doesn't get that upgrade.

Also, this tweet specifies exactly how it will be handled and NONE of it mentioned PSN automatically detecting anything or informing them of anything. It all involved the user having to do it themselves.

deleted1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

I kind of get what you're saying Christopher. I could be caught off guard if I hadn't been reading these articles.

The worst upgrade system that I've seen on Playstation was with Minecraft PS3/PS4/Vita. For $4.99 you could get Minecraft PS4 if you owned Minecraft PS3. If you owned Minecraft PS3, you could get Minecraft Vita free. - I went into it thinking I could buy the PS4 version at the time, since it's the "ultimate version" and still get the Vita version free. I actually bought the PS4 version right before the Vita release with that intention. (they were both released 1 month apart, Fall of 2014) Nope. I had to shell out another full $20 for Vita. Wrote Sony, and they wouldn't work with me on it.

-Hey, at least I got the PSVR version free now. Feels like I got something back from that crap, 6 years later.

morganfell1310d ago

@Christopher and Otter,

Looking back over the sources I agree that Sony's messaging on this has been off. They really need to tighten this up. No excuse for the press but it could have prevented a lot of this.

Saigon1310d ago

Am I the only one that understands that the sell of this is for MMSM. If you want to play SM 2018 on PS5 you can, enhanced but you can. Now if you want the ultimate edition you have to pay for it through the MMSM game. The reason they are doing this is to sell MMSM not the ultimate edition of SM. The ultimate edition is a plus. I get that some want Sony to give the SM ultimate edition for free, but I hate to say that its not going to happen because the ultimate edtion is a remastered version of the game designed for the PS5. Any remaster that any company has given us has a price tag to to it. That's like telling Nintendo to give us the Mario Ultimate edition for free on the switch because we owned those games in the past...

blackblades1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

I hope people move on and stop bringing this up and complaining. Probably be another article about this soon.

UnSelf1310d ago

i had no freakin clue this was the case. I really was ready to spend an EXTRA 70 for the Ultimate Edition eventhough i own PS4 Spiderman.

Yeah this is a little messy and i almost gave away 50 damn dollars

UltraNova1310d ago

No no no, forget your Spiderman ps4 copy, it's useless on the ps5, unless you want to replay it there.

You need to buy Spiderman MM Ultimate edition to get access to the remastered version of the original 2018 Spiderman.

Petebloodyonion1310d ago

Meanwhile MS had this to say regarding the subject. a jab to Sony's video about how sharing a game on Ps4 vs Xbox1
https://twitter.com/xboxuk/...
"Here's a thread on how you can upgrade games to Xbox Series X | S with Smart Delivery in a few easy steps
-
-
- Just buy the game"

Also IGN dedicated a whole podcast to it
https://youtu.be/b9d2H6ioz8...

ziggurcat1310d ago

It's the same thing on PS5. All you need to do is "just buy the game" on PS4, too, so they completely failed in their attempt to troll Sony.

What this whole thing is about is a *remastered* version of Spider-Man. You still get the same kinds of upgrades playing PS4 Spider-Man on PS5 as you would with the PS4/Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk/Valhalla, etc... on PS5/Xbox Series X.

Again, swing, and a miss from MS.

Petebloodyonion1310d ago

You know that there are two versions of Nba 2k, Valhalla, etc. right?
Like they are not the same game and not all publishers automatically offer you for free the next-gen version of the game.

1310d ago
1310d ago
blacktiger1310d ago

it's a remaster not an upgrade, know the difference and put your fanboy to your mom's basemen

blacktiger1310d ago

This is what I wrote on another post and youtube, but gamers seems to get confused,

That's wrong bro:
Upgrade/Enhancement - is a same game with barely a touch and it works on all devices. Kinda like same game with many computer from weak to powerful machine.
Remaster - is when they replace texture and models and so on. Remember I said "REPLACE"
Reboot/Remake - Starts from the scratch

This is where Xbox fan boys gets confused.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH1310d ago

It’s anti consumer no matter how you try to sugar coat it.

Christopher1309d ago (Edited 1309d ago )

No, it's not. Sony gave you exactly what you paid for two years ago. You are no longer a consumer as it relates to Spider-Man (2018). The new product is MM which has some extras that are actually beneficial and not holding back those who are no longer considered the consumer target, which is Spider-Man (2018) owners.

No matter how you try to twist the meaning of it, Sony isn't being anti-consumer. Every court in the world would uphold that assessment here.

It's okay to be critical of Sony's choices, but that doesn't mean that they are anti-consumer in those same decisions. Two sides seem to believe the extremes here rather than recognize the middle-ground elements.

Sounds pretty straight forward to me. Get the PS5 version of the main game for free then pay for Miles Morales

Ryushaa1310d ago

At first I though this as well, but it seems like it is not. Actually is:
- Buy Miles Morales (Only the Miles Morales, don't even need the base game) on PS4 and get the PS5 version for free.
- Then you have the choice to pay $20 to get the base game on the PS5, and only on the PS5 as is a remaster only in the new console.

I feel Sony is shitting the bed this new generation with its fans and there communication has nose dived. They use to be so open now they barely say a word it’s like Microsoft and Sony have swapped there ways. Shape up Sony!

RememberThe3571310d ago

I see the correlation too. Not sure it's causation but Sony's gotta clean thing up before launch regardless. This has been so needlessly dumb.

GameZenith1310d ago

This is what happens when Sony regains their ego. The massive ass kicking that the PS4 gave the XBone has made Sony lose their modesty they built up after the poor release of the PS3 and how Sony had to catch back up to eventually outsell the Xbox 360.

1310d ago

Not feeling the need to communicate with your customers because you take them for granted. That's what happens.

1310d ago
SpadeX1310d ago (Edited 1310d ago )

@darkWingsoul

Ah, yes. The perfect example of a blind loyal fan.

"They've communicated plenty"

Why of course they did, except they did it so terribly bad, every explanation led yet to another question or even more confusion.

"I feel like people who aren't really Sony fans are spewing hyperbole, blowing it out of proportion and using it as an excuse to create fake outrage and to concern troll about it endlessly in an effort to sway opinion"

Perfect, us Sony fans must support all decisions they come up with, whether good or ba- oh crap, how foolish of me, I almost made a mistake! They never make bad decisions obviously, they've been pro-consumer this entire time.

"There messaging in some instance could have been clearly sure but that could be said of any gaming company, but referring to it as "trash" calls into question your claim of being a Sony fan."

YEAH! How dare anyone call their preferred console manufacturer trash for doing something wrong! Those are not true fans who want to get the better treatment as actual consumers.

Do us all a favor Mr. darkWingsoul and anyone else wearing the same sony fanboy glasses, take them off. Understand that companies - even the ones you are most loyal to - are businesses, corporations who care about nothing but earning your trust and money, you're not helping when you take on the people who are against this, this kind of shitty communication shouldn't be supported from nobody, even fans. If this is already an impossible task for you to accomplish, then the least you could do is leave the ones who are against this alone.

Why? According to the well publicized Insomniac leaks they have a slew of plans for Spiderman including its sequel.

CrimsonWing6922d ago

The sequel has had rumors that it could be sold piecemeal style or might be GaaS.

https://youtu.be/XCFr3KRB9G...

This is all coming from the leaks you mentioned. The problem is the industry is not doing well no matter how ill-informed people spin it on here when they see “sold 3 mill.” In those Sony leaks it showed the struggle to get ROI and they spend an insane amount of money to develop, which makes 0 sense to me when there’s not much to show for the increased development costs. Case in point would be Suicide Squad vs Arkham Knight.

I believe we’re in the middle of seeing a drastic change in media and distribution. This goes for movies, but more so for games and the industry is scrambling to figure out how to get more money out of consumers rather than stick to the “buy it once” to play it all.

https://www.gamesindustry.b...

https://www.theverge.com/20...

These are things you need to pay attention to in order to know which direction the wind’s blowing with this sh*t storm. I was almost certain the GaaS initiative was killed when Jim was leaving, but now seeing the success of Helldivers 2… I’m thinking we’re in for a bumpy ride. I just don’t know what that looks like yet, but I don’t think it’s gonna be pretty.

anast22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Insomniac still has a good generation left in them before they get cannibalized by investors. It'll probably happen around the mid PS6 gen, when we see the beginning of the fall.

dmonee22d ago

Huh with this article? If Sony and Insomniac want to abandoned the Spider-Man franchise and make a half baked, live service Spider-Man game, and miss the mark with their fans, then God bless’em!!!!

22d ago
JimmyDM9021d ago

Seems unlikely when they abandoned the GaaS spiderverse game but are still going ahead with single player games like Wolverine and Spider-Man 3.

Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Ultimate Spider-Man use to be my favorite until Insomniac games took over.

Inverno156d ago

I'd still choose Ultimate above all other games, followed by Shattered Dimensions

My favorite and still champion Spiderman PS2, followed by Marvels Spiderman2, then Miles Morales, followed by Marvels Spiderman, and finally Ultimate Spiderman.

I need to drag out my PS3 and try Web of Shadows, owned the game for years and years and never played.
