Failings? Open-World games are very successful. If you don't like them, then don't buy them.

Sonic-and-Crash1736d ago (Edited 1736d ago )

tbh the problems are not GoT s specifically but open-world genre s generally ....and the main problem is that all open world since Far Cry 3 (someone did it before but i dont recall it now ) probably follow the same motive of enemy appearance and progress---> clear enemy bases , enemy patrols and enemy bosses random in basses along with sometime interesting sometime substanceless routine sidequests to gather equipment..

This .is not a bad concept for the adversaries to appear in such way for the major part of the game but seeing it repetitively for the whole game and being the only way to progress in every open-world game starts to fatigues (Far crys ,MGS V RDR2 , Horizon, Days Gone , Zelda , GoT ) ....they must invent new ways in order the games to not feel monotonous or repetitive..

..though here in favor to GoT i must add that GoT along with Zelda are the only games that even with that overused system can lose yourself to their worlds without being bored ..

Very good battles mechanics like GoT s , randome puzzle temples with bonus items like Zelda and well made wild-life in the form of adversary or boss like Horizon is the way to go and evolve the genre

FrostedFire1735d ago (Edited 1735d ago )

That's such a stupid counter argument to make. "Don't like it Don't buy it." I love the Open world genre. Not too long ago it was THE biggeet innovation in game design. And we've since seen many good, nay, great games put their own fresh spin on the genre and craft something unique. What's so wrong about pointing out some of the flaws with the open world genre? If I didn't like the bland mission design in Red dead 2 does that mean I absolutely hated the game? No, absolute smooth brain talk. I want stuff I love to improve. And criticizing stuff that is rehashed and overdone is okay in my book. I would recommend you acquire the ability to critique something and still love it at the same time.

abstractel1734d ago (Edited 1734d ago )

First off, I'm enjoying Ghost, but I believe it could be a lot better in areas. Thing is, I actually went on a media blackout from ~2 years ago on this game to experience it without knowing much. There are some really great design choices.

Problem is, I agree Repjaws: "Don't like, don't buy it". So you're not allowed to critique games and gaming trends? So my main criticisms with open world games:

- Almost everything is exposed as to the gear abilities/moves. There's no sense of discovery in that area
- Games like AC and Watch Dogs are basically the same game with one gimmick setting them apart.
- Too many side quests. Yet you pretty much need to do a lot of them to get the gear you want.

In short, too little discovery and surprising events. I do love the Legends missions, so far (haven't finished them all). I like Ghost, don't like the grind, it's a 4/5 game for me. I see nothing that is drawing me into Valhalla or WD Legion. I'm excited about Cyberpunk, and have been on media blackout since the first proper gameplay reveal.

Ghost of Tsushima and the failings of the articles written about it.

Time to think outside of the checkbox of hating on new and popular games.

morganfell1736d ago

Its an invasion. There are going to be enemy bases, checkpoints, patrols on the road, supply lines, beach camps to handle supplies and troops. How do they think this occurred? That the Mongols parachuted in and and moved as one large force? As far as Far Cry 3 I liked the characters but it was the game that pushed the entire tower bit. For me FC2 remains the best of the bunch.

AspiringProGenji1736d ago

I miss FC2’s real time map and the physics. It should have remained in every far cry game

Shadow0fTheDog1736d ago

Many people are playing it at the moment, it's only natural that different opinions will emerge and it's best to talk about these things while it's still fresh

ApocalypseShadow1736d ago (Edited 1736d ago )

There's nothing wrong with them. But, if you keep playing them back to back, you'll become jaded from them. Like I did with GTA. I was done with the series after San Andreas. It became boring with that same gameplay loop. Haven't bought one since.

So, I changed my strategy: buy only one open world game every once in a awhile. And after I play one or during, I go back to linear, story driven games, VR, old school side scroller kick and punch games, arcade games, puzzle games, etc. Mix it up. You don't have to play them all.

This whole gen I've only played Horizon, Spider-Man and now, Ghost of Tsushima. I don't really count Skyrim only because I never played it before and it's awesome in VR as an archer and mage. Totally different than a flat screen game.

You got to space them out. It would be the same if you played too many linear games or puzzle games or racing games. It's going to get boring if you don't space out and diversify your line-up of games.

Abnor_Mal1735d ago

Same way I play, play one type of game then switch it up with another gameplay type. A palette cleanser is needed or you will indeed feel burnout after playing the same genre all the time.

ApocalypseShadow1735d ago

Yup. The article writer definitely seems like he's played too many and is now complaining about it and applying it to Ghost.

Shows how a terrible opinion article can affect games and the industry if you let it.

FallenAngel19841735d ago

Open world isn’t a genre it’s a game design

mkis0071735d ago

Thank you!! Same with calling all sony's games the same because they are third person... such a stupid thing to say.

boing11735d ago

I have zero problems with this because the setting makes it very grounded. Everything fits.

Ok… so which game got the Japanese pissed off enough to complain about it in the diet (Japanese parliament)?

It was a great game.
All my Japanese friends loved it.
I remember I would visit my friend who owned a bar and we will talk about the game and sometimes other Japanese dude will join in. Pretty dope

-Foxtrot26d ago

That’s great and a little hilarious how when it was revealed western journalists tried to give off the impression that it came off racist with it being made by non Japanese developers.

CrimsonWing6926d ago

I hope western culture knocks this sh*t off. F*cking Parasites Eve took place in New York, does that make Square a bunch of racists?

-Foxtrot25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Reminds me of Resident Evil

RE4 - Leon killing infected Spanaids...in Spain

Fine

RE5 - Chris killing infected Africans...in Africa

WHAT THE ACTUAL F*** YOU RACIST PRICKS. HOW COULD YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS?

MDTunkown25d ago

-Foxtrot
RE5 case it’s not that long ago when foreigners were killing local Africans. Leopold 2, killed millions Africans. So that’s a touchy historical topic. We don’t have any story driven games where you playing as Nazi.

goken26d ago

Somehow the same western journalists said nothing of AC shadows, when some Japanese were so offended they discussed it with their prime minister in the diet (Japanese parliament).

-Foxtrot25d ago

I've never actually thought of this...

They literally got really snarky with Ghost of Tsushima since it's announcement yet with AC Shadows they said absolutely nothing.

Double standards. Was it because it was Ubisoft or what?

Michiel198925d ago

how the f can you say this after literally everyone complains about AC? So you wanna say you checked which outlets did it for ghost "supposedly" and cross referenced them to the AC reviews? very believable

Cacabunga25d ago

western journalism is all about splitting of communities.

1Victor25d ago

Don’t bother with obscured his last 2 brain cells died when he realized ALL NEW XBOX “EXCLUSIVES “ ARE COMING TO PLAYSTATION
It’s so bad he wrote the answer to his IQ leve as a new account, instead of writing iq 6 yeah he wrote YQIA6🤣.
NOW BACK TO THE TOPIC
Everyone knows that Japan lost their relevancy as the source of video games decades ago so it’s no surprise to anyone with 2 brain cells that this would happen now I would like to see any Microsoft exclusive have the courage to say how many units halo sold in Japan or better jet the number of consoles sold in its totality 🤷🏿

senorfartcushion25d ago

?

It's a AAA videogame. Western journalists only like and care about these games. It's Yotei that's lroving controversial, for stupid reasons - but it's journalists who are trying to talk that game up.

One dumbass ruins it for everyone

Eidolon27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

It was many incidents and defacing that lead to this, a lot of racism(slurs, notes, graffiti, etc.) and disrespect(like littering, dancing in inappropriate places.) Only see reports of incidents involving Eastern Asians.

lukasmain27d ago

Can you explain to me as best you can, what type of incidents and why they would deface it? And who would do it usually and why? Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I know nothing about this or the reasoning

Inverno27d ago

My mind always goes straight to us Yankees, then I'm reminded of how equally full of shite the rest of the world is. Seems most of Japans problems with tourists have been either Chinese or Koreans. Don't talk to me about racism if you can't acknowledge it happens well outside the US.

pwnmaster300027d ago

It’s true. I lived in Japan for many years and know several Japanese and they always say the same thing.
It’s the Chinese and Koreans that give them the most problems. I’m sure Americans have there share also of being annoying but for some reason, Koreans, chineses and Japanese can never get along. Probably due to history.

goken26d ago

It isn’t hard to understand why Koreans and Chinese have issues with the Japanese,
The Japanese basically made some Nazis go: “woah! This is a bit much!”

The Japanese made those responsible Deities in a shrine, refused to acknowledge and properly apologise and proceeded to make themselves look like the victims…

Imagine if the Germans did this, imagine if German made hitller a saint

MeteorPanda26d ago

To be honest....kinda understandable why the koreans and chinese share no love for japan but my mind then asks...why you visiting?

Tapani27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Been here 15+ years in the last two decades and when I complain to taxi drivers about the foreigners and they always look at my white-ass face like I'm kidding, but soon realize I'm serious. Then we engage in a discussion on how foreigners certainly bring money here and increase the softpower of Japan, but also have the potential to ruin a lot of things. It's always a bit funny, but those of us who live here with a local family stuff like this is unforgivable.

It is very well known it's typically five places (US, China, Korea, Australia, England) where the idiots come from, but it is hard to blame the specific nationalities themselves because statistically they have the largest portion of tourists here.

WelkinCole26d ago

Huh? Chinese tourst are notorious. Not sure where you get the yank stuff from. Americans are known to be loud but are generous. I don't remmeber any incident of any American wirting on things or shitting at special places.

raWfodog27d ago
