Massively: The Daily Grind: Is $15 a good fee for your MMO subscription?

Most of the AAA MMOs we play right now charge about the same price: $14.99 a month. Some titles offer discounts for multiple months purchased in advance, and Turbine offers a unique offering in their lifetime subscription to Lord of the Rings Online. Most MMO gamers, though, are paying that $15 fee every month for the game or games of their choice. Massively's question this morning is simple: is that a good value for your game?

I can't imagine paying for online service after paying for the initial game fee.

I like when mmos were about 5 bucks a month

$5 to $10 would be a more attractive price to me.

What I don't understand is how come Guild Wars is free to play while WoW requres a monthly subscription.

Wow has to have many servers for it to handle the over 10 million subscribers they have, and also to have staff to make sure those servers are good and running, but 15 dollars a month is way to much. There just ripping the fans of WOW off. (stickly my opinion about the rip off)

Guild Wars uses instanced levels for its gameplay. It's not really an MMO in the true sense of the word. The only places where you can see other people who aren't in your party are in the cities, and those are only limited to around 100 people or so. When that cap is reached, a new room for the city is created. In World of WarCraft, I believe, cities can have hundreds and hundreds of people. When playing the game and doing quests and stuff, you can have up to 7 other players playing with you.

it should be around 2-5 dollars. 15 dollars is pushing it and just ripping people off.

Now this makes me feel old! I remember playing the beta while I worked at Gamestop. I honestly didn't even know this game was still online! A quick search showed that it's even F2P now, so I may check it out for nostalgia's sake.

I only subbed at launch for 1-2 months bc I was already caught up in WoW at the time. I love the LotR universe though and would like to see how it's being handled these days.

Middle-earth Enterprises sends cease-and-desist letter to LOTRO rogue server project

From MMORPG: "Some Lord of the Rings Online players may have been aware of an unofficial rogue server project that was set to release this month called Echoes of Angmar. Aiming to create a true vanilla version of LOTRO, trait lines and map-less Old Forest and all, the server ran the real risk of drawing legal ire down on its head because of the unlicensed use of a very much still-operating and still-in-development MMO.

PLAY LOTRO FOR FREEAnd in fact, the Echoes of Angmar’s team received a cease-and-desist letter from Middle-earth Enterprises today demanding the cessation of all work and operation: “It is thus with a heavy heart that we must ask that you immediately cease all of your unauthorized use of Echoes of Angmar, and all other Tolkien-related IP on all platforms.”
