7 Most Disappointing Games of 2019 (So Far)

2019 has seen the launch of some of the best games of the current generation, and the last few months of the year is almost certain to bring plenty of Game of the Year contenders to the table. Not every release has had a successful launch, however.

A lot of people are still in denial about that game. It was quite bland, had lots of issues and came with a general lack of polish.

nucky642074d ago

there's no denial - it's a very fun game with a good story and i can't wait for #2. if you don't like it, that's your issue. not mine.

You guys are straight up lying. Game is awesome. Best gameplay in recent memory for me. Fighting hoards is intense and challenging, the traveling is better than any sandbox game i can remember instead of being a chore its fun and engaging. There is intense polish and attention to detail, and its gameplay is top notch. So, yeah. Cant wait for Days Gone 2. Especially with that ending.

Juusterey2074d ago

I won't say denial
definitely quite boring to me though

Dragonscale2074d ago

Sounds like a lot of aaa's nowadays and just like those most of the issues were patched after launch.

P_Bomb2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

I honestly had no issues on the OG and played it to platinum. Plethora of polished photo mode snaps too. Just because your burger had a hair in it, doesn’t mean everyone’s did.

SyntheticForm2074d ago

"Fighting hordes is intense and challenging"

Sure. Run, gain distance, turn, attack, repeat with boosters to help. Unless your skills are poor, there's nothing remotely difficult about Days Gone. The hordes are a joke and are easily dispatched with natural self-preservation instinct and a little brain power - I'd say you need to be about as bright as Edison's first bulb.

"Best game play in recent memory" "Top notch"

Lol. I don't even need an argument. Across all the games of all genres recently, Days Gone's game play is the best. Yeah, why not?

"You guys are straight up lying"

Yes, we're lying about how we feel, and we're doing this just to get your goat. We loved Days Gone.

"There is intense polish"

You're certifiable. No, there's intense breakage - at least for early adopters. I could run it down but it's buried at this point - I just had to counter this ridiculousness.

"The traveling is better than any sandbox game I can remember fun/engaging"

I won't even touch that.

S2Killinit2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

I think the number of downvotes you got, along with the gamer scores being higher than the review scores, and the sales of the game kinda speaks for itself. I dont need to go down with you on a hissy fit.

Personally, it was one of the best games this year, and Im looking forward to playing the sequel. Which is coming, because, you know, successful game...

Why do you assume everything you hate is the same as everyone else?

bluefox7552073d ago

No, a lot of people just have an opinion that is the opposite of yours, you'll have to deal with that.

Sales mean nothing in regards to enjoyment

bluefox7552073d ago

@juusterey It does, actually. If people aren't enjoying it, they won't go out and buy it, they won't tell their friends to buy it.

InUrFoxHole2073d ago

I agree with days gone (on base ps4) but certainly not over Anthem.

Relientk772074d ago

Rage was so much better. I loved Rage and got hooked on it. Rage 2 was just ok.

Sonicjp2074d ago

Agreed. Only 2 good weapons, enemies were repetitive and boring, powers weren't as great as they looked.

WiiU-Dude2074d ago

I love it too. To each their own, so if we like it we like it.

SyntheticForm2074d ago

This one really let me down.

It tries to be over-the-top crazy but I'd replace crazy with lazy.

Monotony central.

UltraNova2073d ago (Edited 2073d ago )

I really want to get it since I passed on the first but the opinions on this games are very polarized. Some love it, some hate it. What did you find dissapointing about it?

With my limited time and so many games on my list, I can't afford to buy a game I will eventually leave behind because it couldn't draw me in.

As for the question at hand, it has to be Anthem for me. I still have connection issues to this day(I have no issues with any other on-line game, so its not ISP related)...thank GOD I got it for 10euros...

gangsta_red2074d ago

Jump Force is definitely disappointing. It should have been an anime fans dream come true instead it was a cheap, run of the mill Namco arena fighter with probably the strangest and most mind perplexing graphic art decision I have ever seen. Why would they go the semi realistic route for an Anime arena game? Made no sense. Thank goodness this is on Game Pass because this is now the only way i'll play this again.

I enjoyed Rage 2 from the little I played, it's unfortunate that my backlog has grown to where if a game doesn't pull me in right away it gets left behind or sent back to Gamefly.

Day's Gone just goes to show another example of the fatigue setting in on open world games for me. The same side missions, seemingly having experiencing the whole game in just a few short missions outside of the main story line and not being interested in learning or wanting to play more.

Anthem, is another game that's strange. From the previews and gameplay I saw it looked to be a winner and I admit i was definitely interested in playing this game. But too many reviews from people and people I knew said the game was just boring. Shame too because it looked fantastic, flying mech suits blowing shit up, how can you mess that up?

Seriously though, this is exactly why Gamefly is heaven sent. I would have hated paying actual money for these games and ending up hating them.

Kribwalker2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

i’m surprised crackdown 3 didn’t make this list. While it was fun for the short campaign, the amount of dev time that went into that one and hype definitely made it one of the most disappointing games of this year

Gamefly is definitely great to play through a lot of games, if you can get through the que to play enough of them.

gangsta_red2074d ago

Agreed about Crackdown 3, definitely should have made it to that list.

"...if you can get through the que to play enough of them."

Lol, it's great having these first world problems.

NarutoFox2074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

The reason why Crackdown 3 didn't make the list is because this is an opinion piece article from one person (website). I've seen earlier articles and websites a few months ago and CD3 made the list. I don't take opinion piece article's seriously though

Christopher2074d ago

I would only put CD multiplayer on the list, if at all. SP was pretty much what they said it would be.

XtaZ2073d ago

CD3 itself wasn't really a disappointment though because that game looked awful ever since the initial reveal and nothing they showed of it through the years made anyone really excited or care about it. Basically the game met the expectations all people had - including fans of the first game, and those expectations were really really low.

The last year before release the only people trying to hype that game up to any extent was Microsoft (duh, it's their job), and Sony fanboys who tried to make it sound like Xbox fans actually cared about or were looking forward to it when in reality the majority of Xbox fans had a really "meh" attitude towards the game the entire time.

It was better than CD2 though, I'll give it that.

Gaming4Life19812074d ago (Edited 2074d ago )

Anthem had fun gameplay but content destroyed the game. Then the loot was underwhelming with the same weapons and upgrades over and over. Borderlands and Diablo got loot right and everybody should learn from them. I still play it because the gameplay is so fun but ultimately it was a disappointment even though I enjoy it.

I am still going to get days gone because I know I'll like it even knowing all its faults, I'm just waiting on a good sale.

Crackdown 3 is fun but clearly failed with what they were trying to accomplish and the destruction they showed off. I still play it but its average and I expected better.

gangsta_red2074d ago

That's what is so puzzling about Anthem, especially with other games it tried to copy or other games they could have copied from. It really doesn't make sense that a game like that would fail that hard.

"Borderlands and Diablo got loot right and everybody should learn from them."

100% agreed, there's just something so satisfying when finding a ton of weapons from drops.

rdgneoz32074d ago

Anthem lacked the content and the loot at the start, as well as the polish (loading screens, lag, disconnections,...). The E3 previews were lies (drop in and out with friends, going into a dungeon from the open world with events going on or huge monsters). The road map has gone missing, and they've only released 1 new dungeon and 2 events which are not permanent (no time table on elysium chests or cataclysm returning again). With cataclysm, they buffed the loot, but no new / permanent content is gonna kill it with all the games out (Borderlands 3 - 5 million copies in 5 days) or coming out once that ends soon. Throw in all the top devs leaving for other projects and the games future isn't very bright.

Mark Darrah: stop harassing devs because you don't know what caused "the thing that you're mad at"

Former BioWare executive Mark Darrah says "be a human being, have some empathy."
Fans don't know who is actually to blame.
Darrah throws up a hypothetical that someone might not like how an actor delivered a line. Sure, it could well be down to the actor, but it also might be down to who was directing them, how the writer asked their work to be delivered, or maybe that was the only take they got.

This line from the video though

"Maybe the CEO of the entire company really wanted his nephew to be hired as a script consultant and this guy with literally zero experience was coming in and pushing for mandatory changes"

Like others have said that seems far too specific to just be an example...

Eonjay99d ago

Exactly. And the crazy part about this is that the people there just doing their job and trying to make a living are the one's getting hurt and losing their jobs. I am also not a fan of targeting specific individuals. Its poor form. These are video games.

RiseNShine99d ago

If only there was a single problem with this game, it was a train wreck waiting to crash and burn.

thorstein99d ago (Edited 99d ago )

As usual, common sense falls on deaf ears. I mean, he thinks this article is about Dragon Age Veilguard. He rejects logic and evidence.

What possible logic or evidence can you provide to convince him otherwise.

Notellin98d ago

The community has spoken and would like for you to stop instead.

This article isn't about that game.

Gamingsince198198d ago

Veilguard was complete trash though anyway.

Notellin98d ago

Then don't use it for the thumbnail. It's misleading on purpose to draw this reaction.

thorstein98d ago

Or...I don't know... read the article.

staticall99d ago

Personally, i think we should always blame and criticize the management (especially top management; like with EA - every screw up should be blamed on Andrew Wilson and his goons). They're the ones with the power, the ones who have the last say in the matter - whatever is the plot details, gameplay, microtransactions, budget and «It's ok that it's buggy and crashes constantly, release the game ASAP, we'll fix it later».

Harrasement is not ok in my book, although, nowadays, many people paint every type of criticism (whatever warranted or not) as harrasement. Which is a very narrowminded and waters down actual harrasement problems. But, i guess, it makes it easier to ignore everything bad you see aimed towards yourself.

I would also like to add, that this topic is a double-edged sword, some developers are being mean to their customers, calling them names or any sort of -isms, that happens. In that case, don't be surprised, that, when you're «firing shots», customers are «shooting back» at you.

SimpleDad99d ago

We do want better games, and we get them by criticizing bad ones.

Eonjay99d ago

No you don't. Everything is criticized by somebody these days. By that logic everything is bad. Thats just more fuel for the echo chamber. The way you get games you want is by supporting the types of games you want by buying them. You want more games like Astrobot? Buy Astrobot. Recommend it to others. Its not about bashing what you don't like. its about supporting what you do like. Money talks.

SimpleDad99d ago

Absolutely, I buy my games cause subscriptions are also part of the problem. I don't criticize myself personally, but by observing criticism by others, I avoid purchasing games with problems.

TheColbertinator99d ago

No we don't. FIFA and Madden get criticized every year and the games get worse and more overpriced.

Christopher99d ago

Lack of profit is the only way to do it, but people are fine buying shit games every day, just not the shit games we talk about regularly here. We distract ourselves with this stupid 'social mirage' issue and the corporations get to keep doing less and less but selling it for more and more.

Armaggedon99d ago

“Better game” with big air quotes. What you like more, makes more sense.

Gamingsince198198d ago

Says the only guy in the world that likes vanguard, I bet you like avowed aswell huh

Empathy has no value when it comes to killing a franchise loved by thousands.

Eonjay99d ago

Empathy always has value when dealing with other human beings. This includes empathy towards the fans who feel scorned and the devs who worked their asses off.

Anthem Sold A Solid 5 Million Copies In Its Lifetime

The multiplayer action RPG shipped a whopping 2 million copies in its first week alone.

JEECE527d ago

A nice piece of proof-as if anymore was needed-that a game isn't automatically a success if it sells "millions of copies."

RiseNShine527d ago

I don't know if it's still possible, but if it still works, PLAY IT. It's a fantastic RPG on it's own, incredible graphics and story, well worth the Bioware name, i don't know how bad it was on release, but when i played years later it was a great single player RPG well worth playing.

ChasterMies527d ago

This a good example of why you should be hesitant to buy a game at launch.

--Onilink--526d ago

Its has been on sale multiple times for like $2-3… and even when not that aggressively dropped, it is usually in the under $10 category of any sale

BlackCountryBob527d ago

That’s good, but also worth pointing out that after maybe 3 months on sale, this game was selling for about a tenner. Reminds me a bit of Days Gone, good sales overall but only after huge discounts so unlikely to make large profit

What a shitty f***** list! Most of the games on it were great fun. Bullshit list.

chantii_mmohaven870d ago

yep this is truly a b*tthurt list :/

MadLad869d ago

I think the only one I agreed on was Anthem, and even that isn't horrendous.

Knushwood Butt870d ago

Anthem; I'd forgotten that game existed. I remember thinking the trailer was BS though; turns out I was right.

Cueil869d ago

the game wasn't bad though

RavenWolfx869d ago

"Worst big budget games" and immediately lists Genshin Impact, a game that has $4 billion in revenue.

blackblades869d ago

$3 billion and counting along with alot of users. I disagree with that being on the list. This list is just a person opinion without merit

monkey602869d ago

I havent played Genshin Impact and Mafia 3 was alright. The rest though I kind of agree with.
I loved the 1st Kane and Lynch and I could not understand how the 2nd game was as bad as it was.
