Assassin's Creed Odyssey World Map Size Comparison With Origins - Athens vs. Alexandaria

Assassin's Creed Odyssey has a huge world map but how exactly does it compare to Origins, which was also massive in size?

Origins was too big, this sounds ridiculous.

I liked Origins a lot but felt like this huge world kinda went to waste after you are done. They do such a wonderful job of recreating these ancient wonders and while the games are of good length...it just seems a waste not to set other stories within it.

Part of the reason Athens is so big is b/c if the water. Like Black Flag we will get a lot of that.

I am happy with the quality. And love the length for an rpg, but I think many will bow out too early.

I wouldn't say Origins was too big but it definitely had too much wasted space. Like the vast, boring desert below the starting town along the left side of the map and bottom portion. I'd say spacing could have a little better due to some fluff game time spent travelling but overall it wasn't that bad at all.

As joab777 pointed out though. Due to Odyssey being set in Greece and having expansive water ways for naval combat.... I'm not entirely sure I'll buy or play this AC but my concern just looking at the map weeks ago was just how small the land mass was. Origins was great but it just veered far too away from being an Assassins game and this appears to go even further away from the games roots.

Sounds great, Origins became small very fast, so this sounds great. Love the feeling of being lost in game worlds.

Suave_Langosta2397d ago

I rather enjoy a large map even if it does have "wasted space." In a game that is set out to capture the essence of a said locale I enjoy the added attention(although mostly empty) to areas such as the desert in origins or the seas of odyssey. True there may not be much to do or explore per say but I think it helps the game catch the feeling of the area.

Take away the water and the map size is about the same. More than enough if you want to explore everything

The Open-World Genre In Gaming Has A Quantity Over Quality Problem

More developers need to focus on what makes open-world games like Elden Ring and RDR2 pop, instead of focusing on needless map expansions.

KyRo240d ago

Open world games need a overhaul in general.

Go here - kill this target
Go here - fetch this
Clear this camp
Add dozens of filler side quests
Tack on a RPG skill tree
Finish up with a couple of hundred collectables

98 percent of open world games follow this game design and it's boring now after nearly a decade of following this same design.

anast240d ago

Maybe they know what it takes to make an engaging open-world, but they won't. For most publishers, managers probably get bonuses for finding ways to cut corners.

IAMRealHooman240d ago

yes. Every ubisoft like is overly large map. just to say it's huge with nothing in it.
Love'em or hate'em a yakuza game is a significantly smaller map, with a lot of side activities and absurd quest lines.trying the different restaurants in game can be enjoyable as they offer different buffs, do that or make traversal so good you wouldn't dare fast travel ie Spiderman

YourMommySpoils240d ago (Edited 240d ago )

Stellar Blade says hello.

The only quality game to come out this year.

exputers240d ago

While true, that one's not a full open-world. Pretty much like God of War Ragnarok.

YourMommySpoils240d ago

Not sure how everyone judges this. If that's the case, that would mean even The Witcher 3 isn't open world and just semi maps slowly unlocked.

Technically, we wanted more money.

bradfh520d ago

Call of Duty already does this; Ubisoft and other game companies will follow suit and explore similar approaches.

Kaii520d ago

Congratulations, A technical error In displaying ads while playing.
EU consumer law needs to chew these assholes a new one.

TheColbertinator520d ago

At this point the entire EU commission must be bribed

Christopher520d ago

The big note here is the built in ad-displays during gameplay and not that they happened. Start screen, cool. Gameplay? That shouldn't ever happen.

Yi-Long519d ago (Edited 519d ago )

"Start screen, cool."

Uhm, no. Start screen very much NOT cool either. There really need to be new laws implemented banning these companies from shoving ads down out throats at every opportunity they see fit.

Crows90519d ago

For free to play which is a market of games needing monetization through different venues. In those games this stuff is fine by me. But when you pay ..20, 40 ,60, or $70 that's when it is not okay to any degree.

jznrpg519d ago

Start screen not cool either

walken7520d ago

They're testing the waters, vote with your wallets.

porkChop520d ago

That's not a technical error. An ad can't be displayed mid-game without you creating the code/tech to make that possible first.
