Monkey See 30 year old game… Monkey Do.
WTMG's Todd Eggleston writes: "Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is a difficult game to gauge, or to recommend. In the end, I enjoyed my time in it but unless you love Dungeon Crawlers, or more specifically: old school archaic Dungeon Crawlers you use to boot up on your Atari or Commodore 64, then I don’t know if this will give you what you want. But if you do yearn for that, then this game does deliver."
I wanted to hate this game. I initially hated this game. I found myself not hating this game at all.
I hate this game. Although for £6.00 maybe, I'll learn to love it. But to be honest (I have steam version of game) it's nothing more than I poor attempt at recreating the EOB series of thirty years ago, but failing. If you like this old skool stuff, which I do, then you can buy EOB I,II and III as a pack from steam or GOG for less them this game. Yeah the graphics aren't there, but the game play is superior in everyway. Or you could try Legend of Grimrock, again from Steam or GOG. Heroes of monkey tavern has such limited and clunky mechanics that it's really a chore to use. Just listen to the voice on the introduction, because that should tell you all you need to know about this game. Not recommended. 5/10
The dungeon crawler Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is out now on Nintendo Switch digitally via the Nintendo eShop for $9.99.
So reminiscent of Eye of the Beholder stuff from yesteryear, and more recent efforts like Legend of Grimlock. I love this old style. Well worth a few quid. Why can't we have 4 player co-op with this type of game?
Surprisingly intriguing. Reminds me ol' Shadowgate. (Now, that's a game that is way past due for a reboot.)
