Mafia 3 was a huge disservice to the franchise. I look at it as the Highlander 2 of the series.

I wouldn't include The Division on this list. It sold a ton and everyone played it. The playerbase did leave quickly because of bugs and Ubi being slow to patch exploits. But that was after they'd bought it. And the game itself was very good.

NMS and Mafia 3 are the kings of disappointment for 2016. NMS #1 by far for reasons stated many times, with Mafia 3 next up. Mafia 3 was a disaster of a game that 2K should be ashamed of. The AI was like something from 15 years ago, and the gameplay was incredibly repetitive.

Game ai hasn't improved at all in the last 15 years.. for the most part it's worse.

The Division from 1-30 was fine, problem was at the time it had no end game and the DZ's only reward was parts for crafting, the 1.1 Patch was a mess in terms of bugs/balance. Had the game launched in the games current state (1.4/1.5) right now it would have had a lot more praise but you can't expect people who bought it at launch to be thrilled, hopefully it's serves as lesson for when a sequel is made.

The division was a over hyped IP from ubi and it sold well just like original watch dogs. Next time ubi won't be able to fool people into buying another one of their over hyped games. Wild lands is next on the list of over hyped games from ubi

I am so happy watch dogs 2 isn't getting the sales, finally maybe gamers are starting to realize ubi is not but a glorified big publisher who over promise and under deliver on their games. They are the mini EA but atleast EA now releases more quality products and offers EA access while ubi is all about $60 games and $30 season passes

Mafia 3 is the only one of this five i have played and to be honest it is better than what i thought it would be. From the hype videos i thought it looked stupid. Similiar to like watching a movie preview clip that makes me not want to see the movie even for free.

I found the repetition to be fun repetition, the created world interesting to cruise, and the music track is outstanding. Also there are gators, lots of hungry gators. The patches really improved the graphics.

My advise. Rent then buy after price drop if you like it.

Overhyped is an overused generic word these days which you could frame about any game for.

I don't know about this year, but articles like this remind of the most disappointing/overrated game of last generation for me and it was LA Noire. It was so shallow when you play it and how it never lived up to the first trailer I saw of it.

For me personally mafia 3 is the biggest blunder of this year maybe this gen, was so looking forward to mafia 3(mafia 1 was a master piece and mafia 2 was a great game with some minor short comings). So much was promised by 2k leading up to release or mafia 3

I don't think it is... Mafia 3 while not amazing was still decent, Mafia 2 was also nothing amazing but rose titnted glasses can take control.

The Division probably takes the crown I mean it's player base vanished within a week or 2. But then again thats because they went for RPG rather than dayz style survival game.

Funny thing is, I wasn't overhyped about any of these games, because I didn't buy into authors overhyping it. Instead I chose to ignore those articles and buy the game on the strength of the dev/publisher and No Mans Sky, Mafia 3 and The Division all turned out to be decent experiences. I think The Division and Mafia 3 were two of my most favorite games this year. They are definitely atleast 9/10 in my Top 10 games this year.

This is why too much hype can back fire. It's one thing for a developer to go out their way and keep promoting the game, its another when gamers start putting too much on a game that is not even out yet.

Well the only games I bought this year were Life is Strange:Limited Edition, Hard Reset Redux, Uncharted 4, Doom, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, BioShock: The Collection, Rise of the Tomb Raider PS4 and Dishonored 2.
