X-Play Reviews Too Human

At long last, Too Human has been released. The long development cycle of the game and a seemingly endless stream of controversies have threatened to establish a mythology larger than the one presented in the game itself and eclipse the true question, "Is the game any good." Well here's your answer, while it's not perfect it's very, very good.

I'm glad Too Human got a good score and all, but THIS IS X-PLAY. This is the same show that RIPS anything Japanese and Sony and calls for it to evolve and move on whilst giving anything Nintendo branded an automatic good score. This is the same show that will promote the 360 like they're on the MS payroll and focus entirely on Microsoft for interviews and special segments unless it envolves Ted Price and Insomniac (cause Morgan loves those guys).

I remember X-Play giving a 4/5 to Viking. I was like, HEY! Good review!...that game sucked horribly. I remember them giving FF: Crisis Core a 2/5....averaging 85 on metacritic and with them giving little explaination...nice!

I also remember Motorstorm's 3/5 and comments like "why would you buy a PS3", "useless PS3", "sell your PS3."

If any G4 cast member likes something, then it seems the whole station rides that things nuts and hops on the bandwagon. I remember hearing Kevin on AOTS yesterday being excited about Too Humans release, and Adam and Morgan also were anticipating this game. Seriously the whole network hops on the bandwagon when its that time. They are the biggest bandwagoners I've ever seen on cable television.

But I knew they would praise this game. Really proves their current lack of credibility. Oh what happened to G4.

In the past year or so X-Play has sadly given up on the idea of "brutally honest" game reviews (used to be their motto) in favor of straight up pandering. Basically if a game has a lot of marketing money, hype behind it it gets a higher score than it might deserve. They thrive on industry access and now that they are becoming more mainstream they can't afford to cheese people off - so they go for the safe option.

Take a Assassin's Creed. I played the whole game, it was OK. It has some cool elements, but was far far from perfect. But it had a ton of hype surrounding it so X-Play gave it a 5 out of 5 and hailed it as one of the best games of the year.

It's a shame, but they've sold out. I still TiVo it though :)

ha ha I love reviews myself, I never ever whined and complained about them myself, unlike others I know who instantly resort to insulting sites when things don't go their way, ha ha so childish, a "REVIEW" is a opinion that carries somewhat more merit than the average Joe's opinion simply because they are *suppose* to be paid professionals who are more knowledgeable when it comes to judging a games value. That being said in general I tend to believe most reviewers give their honest opinions on games, even when I see scores for 1 game thats all over the map, I don't get all crazy like some fanboys looking for an excuse of why the low or high scores are not acceptable, I chop it up to THE REVIEWERS HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES, LIKES, AND DISLIKES, WHICH ALL MAKE UP HIS INTERPRETATION ON WHETHER OR NOT A GAME IS A 5, 7, 9 OR 10....there are rare instances where I feel a reviewer is being totally biased based on how the review is written, and comparing the things he actually talked about with other reviews but either way its not set in stone, I never ever make up my mind about a game based on 1 review, I've been gaming long enough to know that I alone have the final say on how good or bad a game is/buying a game or not. I liked the demo, and I'm picking up Too Human tommorrow.

Explain MGS4? Maybe they actually enjoyed it? Just because somebodys bias doesn't mean that they will HATE EVERYTHING that isn't in their personal bias. I think they've proven to have a pretty clear bias in favor of 360 and Microsoft, regardless of any games they enjoyed on Ps3. Obviously a cable television show can't get away with scoring EVERY SINGLE Ps3 game low for no apparent reason, but I do think they can clearly get away with showing a slight bias and trying to sway their viewers opinions ever so slightly, cuz they obviously do right now with people still blind to it.

G4 has just turned into bandwagoners, I don't know if they purposely mean to show any bias, they just hop on whatevers "in" or trendy with this new internet or "Youtube" generation. What about Wii? Its a different audience, 360 is the "in" system with the whole hardcore and internet generation type of crowd, which is exactly what G4 aims at as well. I don't know if that makes any sense, its hard to for me to explain, but I've been watching G4 since the network got started a long time ago and I've watched them slowly change the past two years, they've completely changed their target audience.

It's sad when a game has to have perfect ratings to be labeled as good. Ratings are simply someone elses opinion. With professional ratings from mags and tv shows, atleast the reviewers are responsible for what they say. When you start to mix in the biased "reviews" from fan sites, the review system is broke. Lair was probably the game affected by this the most. It is a very good game that was over looked by many due to the unprofessional opinionized and biased drivel spewn all over the internet by many people that didn't own a PS3 or even a copy of the game. Haze was another and now Too Human. All very good games and worth playing, yet are known more for the bs from the net instead of how fun the game is.

Too Human is the biggest flop in gaming history, considering the game has been building hype ever since it was announced for the first playstation and that it was hyped and labeled by the fanboys like Power of green (and you too) as a "God of War Killer + Diablo Killer".

It doesn't matter how bad Too Human is rated, it is already bad enough to cast doubt on its ability as a system seller, as another game killer, let alone a game worth paying full price for.

I will only buy this game when it hits the bargain bins to see how bad it is. And of course, I will buy it as a used product, Dyack is not getting my money for his garbage.

Too Human was never boasted as some super AAA that could only be done on the 360 and would be a Halo killer so to speak, or genre wise God of War killer?, do you understand?

The hype comes from media trying to garner attention, some media do not like D.D. because of his mouth.
The rest of the hype comes from PS3 fans talking about the game sense it was heard of, more than the 360 fans.

I don't think G4 is purposly biased. I think they have different tastes than I do generally and have an underlaying bias that everyone has for one side or the other.

I agree with you partially. Everyone is biased in some way shape or form. But at the same time, X-Play and G4 are hyping LBP and Restistance 2 very very hard to be biased just towards Microsoft. If that were the case, wouldn't they try to derail LBP or Resistance 2 because its a Sony 1st party title? Or wouldn't they have given negative reviews to Rachet and Clank, Resistance, Drake's Fortune, etc. etc?
I think a lot of fanboys on either side will hate anyone that disagrees with them, then turn around and say how fair they are when they give a good review to a game they like on thier respective consoles.
I don't buy games based on reviews, but i respect Adams Sesslers opinions, if no one else on G4.

From what I've seen, it's not so much a hate of Sony, as a love of MS. Last year they bashed Sony a lot, but so did everyone. It was the "cool" thing for the media. But they don't bash Sony anymore than anyone else really, it's just that they talk up MS so much, all the time, and rush to their defense for everything said against them.

I've never played Too human but Xplays review just doesn't flow with IGN, Gamespot and the rest. I was expecting maybe a 3 but "A sold 4" seems abit questionable.

At the most this game deserves a 3.5, its really more like a 3.0/5.

Graphics - 2.5 The game looks like a launch title.

Gameplay - 3.0 Not enough to seperate it from a myriad of other Hacknslash games. Way to easy, button mashing FTW. Terrible AI.

Story - 2.5 They don't even try to tie the norse mythology and futuristic setting together. The story is just ackward and pretentious.

Replay Value - 3.5 If looting is your thing then this is your game, but I still say Diablo did it better.

This game might not be as bad as HAZE but that's not saying much. When I think of all the other titles that have recieved 4/5s I just can't see this game along side them.

Just get Mass Effect for the 360. They finally patched this game so it works properly. It does everything Too Human does right and more.

It might not be a button smasher in the traditional sense, but I find myself just flailing the joystick randomly - there isn't a lot of depth in the controls. You just keep jumping around, from one enemy to the next, with little to stop you.

I don't think that X-Play is biased. I just think they have bad reviews. Take for example their review for The Darkness. I know this is an old game. But X-Play gave it a 2 out of 5. That game deserved so much more. The Darkness was awesome all the way through. Does anyone know if there is a sequel in the works?

What's so bad about a 4/5 anyway? That's 80/100 like someone stated above. A 3/5 would be a 60/100, well below the meta average. So their score was slightly above. it became a mellee/fps masher
in melle you engaged and clicked until they died

same with too human
button masher indicates the style of play rather then the actual controll used

turningpoint tried something new in the fps genre with the exception of clipping and controll erros and ending i found it fun

haze failed saddly to deliver on its promises

lair could be fixed with a control patch but other then that it was fine

however i have noticed that some magazines site only seem to review odd games and most the ones they do are given bad reviews
i have found a couple of exceptions 'surprisingly'

onions review pulled down uncharted by about 5 points
1ups has pulled too humans down as well

but niether reviwed the other
some review just seem to be put in to spike ratings of games
and its also sad that some sites just give blanket praise to games

Everyone is looking for a go-to answer, one straight forward reason for how X-Play rate their games. Me, personally, believe that they treat "each" review individually. For Ex: I don't think Konami paid off X-play for a good review. MGS4 IS a good game. But in a case like Too Human, maybe MS was unsure the review X-Play would give. And maybe they did pay off to get a decent review, SO F@#KING WHAT! Some like swiss cheese, some eat nothing but swiss cheese. It's called choice. I think more "true gamers" should try games themselves, then come up with their own conclusion. And stop taking these commercially-controlled reviews as Godsends.

As usual, I picked up Too Human today, after reading all these "reviews" of the game. Honestly, I dont need someone to tell me what to like, I can make up my own mind. I stopped paying attention to reviews after Shadowrun came out and was getting 6/10 from people. Im sorry but to this day, Shadowrun is one of the most balanced multiplayer games available on any system. Disagree if you like, but like I said, I dont need anyone to tell me what to like.

Reviewers are not much different them a lot of people that post on this board, outside of the paycheck. I disagree a lot with them, but hey, Ive been playing video games since the '70s, which is longer than most of the people doing reviews these days.

Just play the game, and if you like it, buy it. I own 14 different game consoles, including all the current gen systems. I have a huge game library. I will proudly place Too Human on display with the rest of my games, right next to my PS3 games and Wii games.

Too Human is a welcome addition to my ever-growing-larger collection of FPS games for the 360. If this game was on any other system I would feel the same way. Sometimes I dont understand why we cant just be gamers, independent from loyalty to any company. Play what you like, and like what you play. Dont hate a game just because it is not on the only system you have. Just get a job and buy that system. Dont be forced into hating things you dont have. If you are a "gamer" then you will like to play VIDEO GAMES, period, regardless of which piece of hardware they are on.

I own a 360 and bought the system in February with Too Human in mind. I was hoping that the game would be good. And its not. It isn't worth 60 dollars cuz the combat system is clunky and broken. The animation is lazy and really throws off a game that has a simple battle system.

When people are saying that this game doesn't deserves the 4/5 that X-Play (who's pro-Microsoft, because they are owned by a guy who freaking started Microsoft, Paul Allen, check wiki and check out Vulcan Inc.), they're saying what should be said.

I'm disappointed that the game couldn't live up the the hyped that drove it. And stop with the fanboy-b/s. This game is average and doesn't deserve any other title other than average.

I've said this before - When did we as gamers become so beholden to the whims of reviewers? Are we cattle...herd us to the proverbial slaughter (draining us of our $60)?!
I've read just about every review on this game....yes, not actually glanced at a abbreviated piece or take a gander at the meta score. I've noticed that gamers like to talk the talk....they want innovation (and I ain't saying TH is innovative), but they want things easy too...easy to pick-up, easy to understand. I want all my FPS's to have Halo's control scheme...but i ain't saying it's the best; but it is what i'm used to. And here's where the crutch comes in- we want innovation...but we'll have your Dev's head if it isn't what we indivdually want! Let's look at graphics...i find TH to have above average graphics....but they ain't no Gears! So, if Gears is a 9.5....then what's TH? I'd say a 7...but then you take a game like Crash Mutant whatever (i forgot the title) and the Graphics are a 7...but the art direction makes a 7 look like a 9. Crash doen't need to be super realistic...it's a cartoon style game. I look at TH as a realistic interpretation....rather than a true photo styled game like Gears (though Gears isn't as photoreal as say GT5: ptologue).
Anyhow, much of what i've said above is meandering....so I apologize. I'll leave it at this: finding a honest reviewer looking at a game for not just what he/she likes, but what he/she thinks the target demographic would like...is increasingly becoming rarer. Not being influenced by personal dislikes towards wanker Dev's or following the herd of other reviewers - is getting tougher to find. Ultimately, it's your money, your time and your likes/dislikes...and flamers in forums would rather rattle your cage than go play a game they like...what's that tell ya?
