$90 2TB drives can be obtained if you don't mind tearing apart external drives (which isn't that bad or hard since you can then just throw the PS4 drive right back in the enclosure).

thereapersson3242d ago

Lacking the ability to store music, photos and videos on the PS4, I can't see this being very necessary, sorry.

SnakeCQC3242d ago

The raspberry pi 2 is soo cheap

Angeljuice3242d ago

It is actually very necessary as most users cannot fit their entire library of games on 500Gb of hard drive space. Having to re-download old games when you want a quick go is very annoying.
Music and video files are tiny compared to PS4 games.

TheOnlyMastrx3241d ago

Pretty sure game install sizes on Xbox One and PS4 are similar if not the same, I have filled 500GB Xbox in less than 6 months with free games from Games with Gold and like 8 retail games on disc/downloaded. Space gets used fast on Xbox One/PS4. Just started using a 4TB external since my console is full.

Is Sony working on allowing use of external drives? I plan on getting a PS4 sometime down the road, so i'm curious if they are or if I will need to swap drives when I get one. Won't be for a while I guess so maybe they will have a bigger hard drive model when i'm ready to buy.

JoeReno3242d ago

I assumed (stupidly I suppose) that these came with a HD

SnakeCQC3242d ago

Its probably easier and cheaper to buy and install a 1tb 2.5inch hybrid drive than this massive thing and it turns out you get faster speeds with my solution.

NobleRed3242d ago

The drive is for hdds from 3 to 6tb. When will you stop posting this 2tb bull***.

Of course the data bank is useless if you just want 2tb.

warczar3242d ago

This thing needs a fan and its own power supply otherwise it just looks like a good way to fry your Playstation.

Angeljuice3242d ago

How will putting a plastic hard drive enclosure on your PS4 fry it?

The 3.5" drive draws the same power as a 2.5" drive and the only extra power drain seems to be the digital display which again takes next to no power.

uth113242d ago

No, 3.5" drives do consume more power than 2.5". Maybe up to 10 watts more.

The next ps4 revision will have a smaller power supply according to FCC docs so this could be a problem

warczar3241d ago

Overheating is like the number one reason for console failure since the ps1 anyone who has a ps4 knows that thing is already on the warm side so if you think putting a harddrive that's 3 times the size of the standard hdd right on top of the bluray drive is a good idea then be my guest, I'll take a wait and see approach especially with nyko products.

RevXM3242d ago (Edited 3242d ago )

Heat isnt going to be much of an issue with this as I cant imagine a 3.5" drive becoming much hotter and being on top of the original location it shouldn't be restricting airflow either.

And it has its own power supply so don't worry, it pulls power from the wall through the PS4's power chord. it would virtually be the same if it had its own AC cable and you plugged it into the next socket, makes no difference for the PS4 as its not leeching power from the DC current "generated" by the PS4 PSU.

However IGN reported that with their 3.5" drive performance was pretty shit, so I'll hang back a bit more and see if that is just a faulty drive, human error, flawed design or flawed unit. Gonna have to wait for more tests and reviews and see what is what.

Nyko PlayStation 4 Data Bank review

Vic B'Stard writes: "In an attempt to find a solution to may ongoing PlayStation 4 storage problems, I decided to try out one of Nyko’s PS4 Data Bank 3.5” hard drive enclosures.

Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as having too much data storage, ask any PC gamer. Unfortunately nobody told this to Sony or Microsoft, two companies that should have known better when they saw fit to stuff a paltry 500GB hard drive in their new consoles.

This extremely short-sighted action will have ramifications for gamers for the life of this generation of game consoles."

I too was going to install a 3tb with this guy ... Reading this, Sounds like that is a no go. Really Sony... Wish it had that feature the X1 has with external drive. LOVE that feature. I have a 5tb just urging to be filled up..

SniperControl3163d ago

"In an attempt to find a solution to may ongoing PlayStation 4 storage problems"

It takes less than half an hour to install a new HDD into a PS4 and that includes putting on the OS.

Hardly a ongoing problem now is it.

Derekvinyard133163d ago

The problem is 500gb is not enough. Not the time it takes to put in the hard drive itself....

VicBStard3162d ago

It is an ongoing problem- shuffling games on and off a 1TB hard drive. It does only take a couple of minutes to install a new hard drive. It takes 8 hours to back up 1TB and another 8 hours to restore. It takes two seconds to plug a USB drive into an Xbox One.

lfc_4eva3163d ago

I'm sure Sony will allow external drives in time. It is just a simple solution for the poor storage in both consoles.

slappy5083163d ago

Limiting to 2TB seems strange as that what would be the main advantage of using the normal bigger hard drives: larger cheaper storage . And just reading all the steps he went through to instal that thing, it sounds like it's as much effort as what I put in to instal a 2TB internal into my ps4. Which I prefer anyway because having such a large accessory strapped on the console just makes it look awkward

mushroomwig3163d ago (Edited 3163d ago )

It's not limited to 2TB, it's just the suspend/resume feature doesn't seem to work properly for anything larger. There are videos on YT that show people using 5TB drives with their Nyko.

user816733163d ago

I had the unpleasant experience with a 4tb hdd and the nyko data bank. The applications would be corrupted no matter how i format the drive. I heard it's a hit or miss with anything over 2tb. So i ordered a 2tb drive instead. Good luck.

Nyko Sony PlayStation 4 Data Bank - Hardware Review | Chalgyr's Game Room

Chalgyr's Game Room writes:

Once upon a time we didn’t need things like “Hard Drives” to be able to play our console games. Slap a Memory Card into a PlayStation 1 or 2, save straight onto the cartridge of a Nintendo N64 or the later Memory cards of a GameCube and you were good to go. Along came Microsoft and they introduced a new way of doing things. Why not do away with tiny memory cards and instead have a Hard Drive with limitless amounts of space instead? As we all know limitless didn’t last.

I have one waiting on the shelf. I installed it and removed it, but due to no fault of Nyko. I already have 1.5TB drives in my PS4s and my issue here is the 2TB limitation. That isn't Nyko's fault. The PS4 software can recognize larger drives but the suspend/resume feature doesn't work with any drive larger than 2TB. If you suspend/resume with a 4TB drive like I did, your system acts like it wasn't properly shut down. You get the same warning, and procedures that occur when you have a power outtage.

Koneesha3213d ago

That's only if something isn't downloading. When there are downloads queued it works fine for whatever reason.

I use one with a six terrabyte hard drive, and while it is a pain to manually turn the console on, and off, it works fine other than that!

morganfell3213d ago

That is because there are two states of standby. When anything is occurring in the background except charging, the system is not fully asleep. If the download concludes before you awaken the system you will get the error. It's a great idea, but Sony needs to alter the firmware to allow it to really function. Otherwise, just buy a 2TB SATA.

aceitman3213d ago

save money and get a 2tb for 100-120 its cheaper and it doesn't bulk up ur ps4 and it doesn't cause heating issues on top of things not working right like suspend and resume , I had a 4tb had issues and sent it back.

tamarkovia3213d ago

2tb is more than enough for me right now I have 8 or 9 games loaded up and I'm only playing teso and there's tons of room left.

Klonoa-dreamtraveler3213d ago

don't these like over heat the console? i mean i always heard not to use these kind of attachments.

morganfell3213d ago

I used a WD Green in mine and really didn't have any abnormal heat issues after 3 hours with The Witcher and just over 2 in Shadow Fall Intercept.

IamTylerDurden13213d ago (Edited 3213d ago )

I'd go with Seagate's 2TB 2.5 SSHD (solid state hybrid Drive) for 89$ with nothing extra needed, bc it's 2.5in it will swap in there easily. You will get 4x the storage of the stock PS4 hdd and more than twice the load/DL/bootup/application launch speed. It's the best option for a reasonable price. The Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD (solid state drive) is the absolute best in terms of speed, but it is only 1TB and it's 400$, if i could i'd go with the Samsung 850 Pro SSD.

makes it look unbalanced , my ocd wont allow it...

If the PS4 can only use up to 2TB drives, what's the purpose of the Databank? You can get 2.5" 2TB Hybrid drives...

Abel3D3244d ago

^ Misinformed. It can support more than 2TB it's just that up until the Data Bank, it could only support 2.5" drives, which only come in up to 2TB capacities atm.

slinky1234563244d ago

Like Abel3D said. I was trying to upgrade my PS4 with an SSHD, but if you want an SSHD over 1tb it has to be 3.5" which does not fit in the PS4. So I got a 1TB SSHD which is 2.5" since that does fit. You can get regular HDD with 2tb for the PS4 now, but this dock allows you to use just about anything you want now.

Rookie_Monster3244d ago (Edited 3244d ago )

Good option but External HDD is still a better option as that will allow a user to also upgrade up to a 2tb Hdd internally while never worry about running out of space.

Abel3D3244d ago (Edited 3244d ago )

Proof you can't believe everything you read on the internet. It'll support up to 6TB. The idea of PS4 only supporting up to 2TB derives from it only supporting 2.5" drives which are only available up to 2TB atm.

OmegaShen3244d ago

lol, are you trolling or clueless? PS3 and PS4 can go beyond 2tb.

People been doing this without buying a snap on case.

TheTimeDoctor3244d ago

I don't know if external is a better option, but options are always good. At some point they will add it, usb3 tells the future

LexHazard793244d ago

Well if you have the adapter you can get a 3.5 6tb hdd for PS4. So no need for external..
