Playstation TV Isn't What You Want It To Be

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a tiny set-top box that plays all your Sony PlayStation games? That's probably what you'd think if you saw the new PlayStation TV on the shelf. For just $99, this incredibly tiny box promises the world. Shame it doesn't deliver.

No Netflix is the major FAIL from Sony in Years...

badz1493532d ago

why? is anybody really buying the thing for Netflix? I kinda assume that everybody and their grandmas already have at least 2 devices that can do Netflix already!

u4one3532d ago (Edited 3532d ago )

@BADZ

If you want to compete in a space where things like Roku, Chromecast, AppleTV etc all offer Netflix - the most popular streaming service around- in addition to Hulu and tons of other popular streaming services for the same or less money, you can't rely solely on you're own service that isn't nearly as popular and not give the option to get content from other sources. The PS Vita is hardly a huge success so being able to play "some" of its games in addition to a bunch of really old games poorly upscaled isn't going to appeal to mass markets. Sure there will be fans but people like me have no reason to even be remotely interested in this thing. I don't need yet another device to take up an input on my tv and one more thing to plug in and have to deal with. Th idea is to streamline, not complicate.

XisThatKid3532d ago

Wow most TVs have Netflix these days. That either means fail because Sony launched an incomplete product and donked up on lacking the basics and/or people are complaining about a service they already have on multiple devices some of them Sony products. Some paradox here.

darthv723532d ago

Hmm... i want it to be a replacement to using the PSP Go for playing PSP games on a TV with a controller.

I think it will do that AND allow me to play vita games as well.

It's a win / win (for me anyway).

NukaCola3532d ago

I hope I don't sound like a jerkwad, but apps is not what I want this for. I don't care about those when I have a PS4, PS3, Roku, WiiU and a billion other devices. I want to play Vita games on the TV and I want to share my PS4 to other TVs in my house. I think it's pretty cool.

Gamerbeyond3532d ago

i got netflix on my ps4, tv, computer, iphone, tablet, why would i care if its on playtv. get over yourself.

Steven213532d ago

Hardly a big deal. Probably a licensing issue that Sony didn't want to have hold up release. It's a good box that does what its supposed to do. Almost everything people have hooked up to their TVs has Netflix capabilities. This really isn't a big deal as it wasn't released to be a Netflix box. It's doing the things its supposed to be doing, Netflix can come later.

ramiuk13532d ago

surely sony has already paid that with them having it on everything else?

TKCMuzzer3532d ago (Edited 3532d ago )

@ramiuk1
It's not quite as simple as that and people need to realise this. Every device that Sony would need licensing would have to be categorized before being granted. The trouble with PlayStation TV is quite simple, the device is capable of HD playback through an external source (TV), now this sounds good and it is, the second problem though is that it's very portable making it very easy to wire up anywhere, including public places. This puts a completely different licensing issue in place, not by Sony or Netflix but by the TV/Film studios as the PSTV could be used widely in public places, which of course is not something these companies like. It's a bit like Skygo in the UK and why it is not HD and why you can't plug it into a TV, it's all about the TV/Film companies licencing issues.
Sony will have to have the device evaluated first and go through all kinds of red tape. I know the whole world would love things to be simple but they never are.

Spotie3532d ago

Really? Not having Netflix on one out of half a dozen devices is a massive fail?

I can't decide whether that's trolling, or impressive.

assdan3532d ago

Support will probably be added in the first or second update.

Derpy3532d ago (Edited 3532d ago )

I agree. Though I watch lots of free channels and digitally bought movies & TV on my Apple TV and Roku devices, Netflix is the only service I currently pay for. I had Hulu Plus for a while too, but dropped it for lack of CC and too many commercials. I like the Sony brand, but releasing an internet tv device and leaving out any major services like Netflix is just down right stupid. In it's current state, I can't see this thing even making a dent in a market that Roku has already captured.

phantomngs3532d ago

Yeah, I was worried about the PlayStation TV for awhile. I think the idea is fantastic and there can definitely be a market for those who want a device that can play almost every game in the PlayStation library. However, from first impressions, it seems like Sony needs to sort out the account issues/game compatibility/lack of apps. Still want one so I can marathon Persona 4 Golden without worrying bout battery tho. Lol

chadwarden3532d ago (Edited 3532d ago )

oh crap. neogamespark

Fishy Fingers3532d ago

Looked nice on paper but all seems to be poorly executed and already lacking support from dominate TV streaming services on the aptly named PS TV seems inexcusable.

TKCMuzzer3532d ago

Surely if you new nothing about it then the name 'PlayStation TV' would only suggest anything PlayStation. If it was called 'PlayStation and other Streaming Services TV' then your point may have some validation. By your train of thought anything with 'TV' in the title should have all the latest streaming services.
Now lets make this point, Amazon Instant video is still not available on Android tablets. The PSTV would be classed as quite portable due to it's size and how it's promoted, this as I have said before, throws up a massive amount of issues for Sony which are not easy to get around.

stuna13532d ago

I thought when they originally announced PS TV Netflix was supposedly one the selling factors to have one. Also I'm not clear as to if a PS4 and PS TV can be active on the same account at the same time!? Or do I have to use a alternate account and rebuy games I already own for the alternate account in order to play them.

I need to know before I buy one for my son.

Steven213532d ago

Thats never been the case with ANY Sony device. Why would it change now?

TKCMuzzer3532d ago

The PSTV is like having a Vita with your PS4, you can use the same account on both as it can be registered to each device. The PSTV will be registered to the account you first sign in with, it won't effect the PS4 sign in and you will be able to play on both under the same account. So, you should also be able to log into PSTV, PS VITA, PS4 and PS3 under the same account. This means you can play your Vita games with saves on your PSTV, if you have one.

crusf3532d ago

Sony really needs to focus on the Vita more and not mask the problem with an overly expensive HDMI cable for your TV.

stuna13532d ago

I agree! Seem to me this could be a killing blow to the Vita by shifting sales away from it. IMO the Vita is a far more complete package than PS TV and it deserves better attention and support.

TKCMuzzer3532d ago (Edited 3532d ago )

They are two different things catering for different people. I like the idea of playing Vita games on my TV as well as my Vita. I like the remote play options allowing Dualshock 4 use which is not possible on the Vita.
It's getting released because there was a demand for it from the consumer, no business would miss out on something if there was demand. I look forward to Killzone Mercenary on my TV, I can play it on the go or relax in front of my TV, I win in that situation.

Twitch App launches on PS Vita in Europe

The Twitch app has arrived on the PlayStation store for both the PS Vita and the PlayStation TV, due to hardware restrictions you will be unable to broadcast from the device however the app enables Vita and PlayStation TV owners to watch streams without having to use the browser. If I could play EVERY PS 1/2 game along with PSP and Vita games I would have bought one.

miyamoto3029d ago

If only they put an A/V out cable on the PS Vita like they did with PSP.............. instant micro console for my 46" HD TV. Save Sony multi millions of dollars.

I told Shuhei Yoshida that was the way to go but they wouldn't listen.

KentBenMei3028d ago

It can play most and it is cheap. I hear you but it's a sweet deal, it gets hate for not being perfect which is unfair.

NarooN3029d ago

Why introduce it and then discontinue it like two seconds later? Lol wow.

XanderZane3029d ago

Because no one was really buying it. They even cut the price in 1/2 and PSTV's were just collecting dust on retail shelves from what I've heard. I wonder what they will do with all that overstock in their inventory? Well the Atari 2600 ET games have been all dugged up, so they can now bury this waste of hardware in it's spot. Oh well. Glad I didn't waste money on it.

TheColbertinator3029d ago

Too much hardware on the market. Sony needs to avoid Sega's mistake back in the 90s.

If Sony intends to compete with a focus, trimming out unprofitable hardware and features is quite efficient.

rezzah3029d ago

Plus casuals wouldn't understand what this is. this is more geared towards core gamers who wish to play older games, but it doesn't contain all the games they wish to play.

ZeekQuattro3029d ago

Surprised it lasted this long. Not even a name change made a difference.

The_Truth_24_73029d ago (Edited 3029d ago )

Sony really dropped the ball on this one. It couldn't even do Netflix and they killed the YouTube app.
Got one on day 1 and I've only used it a handful of times. Freedom Wars is what's keeping it from collecting dust recently.

Kribwalker3029d ago

Not to mention I can't get mine to stream the ps4 well in a room 20feet away......I bought one so my kids could play the ps4 in the other room, but it doesn't stream well

Why Did We All Tune Out of PlayStation TV?

Push Square: "When the PlayStation TV was announced, this author was on holiday. It was poor editorial director Damien McFerran that was left to man the fort during an explosive Tokyo Game Show press conference, which also played host to the reveal of the PlayStation Vita Slim. It was big, big news at the time, with the microconsole in particular drawing plenty of plaudits."

This is the problem with Sony Playstation, fingers in too many pies. Just focus on games and supporting the platform you already have out there. They are letting the PSVita die a slow and painful death, and instead of investing in it, went to come up with PlaystationTV? Surprise, surprise! Sony didn't support that either!
When will they learn that gamers just want to play good games?

get2sammyb3030d ago

I agree that sometimes it feels like they're spinning too many plates. I do think this was an experiment, though, so you can't really blame them.

Junebug3030d ago Show
FamilyGuy3030d ago (Edited 3030d ago )

wtf are you talking about? The Playstation TV was a console version of the vita. It didn't need its own support when it just played vita games. I'm not a handheld sort of gamer so its release was a welcome edition to me. A mini hmdi out port on the vita would've been nice but the PS TV was a cheaper option. It gave me the opportunity to play some of those monster hunter-like games that the vita was getting that weren't showing up on the PS3 or PS4.

Seems like you have no idea what the system even was

Seraphim3030d ago

I don't think that's the problem at all. I see it twofold. One being necessity and the other being confusion. Necessity in that who needs it for Remote Play, to play Vita games on their tv, and so on. Confusion being exactly that. What is it? What does it do? And so on. Guess there could be some other issues. Price. Marketing. Price wasn't terrible but back to necessity. Do I really to spend that much for this and is it really useful to me. Lack of marketing. I bet a vast majority have no idea this product is available and if you were to ask gamers what PSTV was they'd think it's some video service offered by PS they never heard of.

I think it's a great concept. Back when I was a kid this would have been fantastic. With the price drops I have considered picking one up for $40-50. My problem is I really have no use for one. I don't have a spare tv anymore and even when I did I never really had any desire to game on it. I have my setup. Secondly most Vita games I enjoy playing on the Vita. Though some it would be cool to play on the big screen so I might have just talked myself into buying one.

rainslacker3029d ago

They brought out PSTV before they abandoned the Vita. The PSTV by it's very nature could have bolstered the Vita install base, thus making it get more support.

While I agree, Sony did fumble support for VIta in general in the West, it wasn't because they happen to bring out a different version of the Vita...which only expanded the market base for the system.

isarai3030d ago

Well many reasons, a hefty chunk of vita games are incompatible, memory cards are still pricey as hell, doesn't come with a controller which is required, doesn't stream netflix even thou standard vita does, and most of all people really aren't that interested in playing handheld visuals on a big screen. Especially now that every vita game is also getting a ps4 release, sony is really just slowly but steadily turning the knife they stabbed it withat this point

gangsta_red3030d ago

It was a great idea, just executed very poorly. Hardly any exposure and not enough support.

Just another peripheral in a long list from Sony that has been unsupported and eventually dropped. This is why people should be cautious about PSVR.

u4one3030d ago (Edited 3030d ago )

it was a solution for a problem that didn't really exist. if you own a ps4 (or a sony smart tv), you already have the best features of the pstv anyway. if you own a vita, then you have vita games, and they can be streamed via ps4. as a media streamer, it was a joke and could in no realistic way compete with Roku, Apple, Google, Amazon etc.

as for psvr - i really hope it succeeds, but you're right. a product needs a reason to exist and people need a reason to want it. same thing kinda happened with kinect as well.

donwel3030d ago

Vita games can be streamed via PS4?
PS4 games can be streamed to Vita through remote play but I've never heard it the other way round.

ziggurcat3030d ago

it also didn't help that not all vita games were compatible. I bought one thinking I would just play my vita titles on my TV, but I honestly haven't used it at all - it's my own fault for not really researching it thoroughly enough!

rainslacker3029d ago

I think it's execution was fine, just it didn't get much exposure in terms of marketing. I mean, even when the price dropped to a point only a hater could argue it wasn't worth it, the thing barely sold.

I think some people found it redundant. Some found it less capable than the handheld.

Mostly though, I think Sony had a great idea, and then didn't bother to make it into a better device as time went by. All their efforts went to PS4, and new compelling features...although probably redundant on a game console, never made their way to the device to entice the more mainstream casual customer to choose it over something like Roku or AmazonTV. Rather silly really, as much of the success of the PS1 and PS2 was due to how they made it more appealing than other devices which did the same thing...except the PS1 and PS2 could also play games.

user66660473030d ago

I'd take one of these for 3DS games.
