Sony Is Working Towards "a Future Where Consoles Could Disappear" as it Tackles Cloud Gaming

While Sony Computer Entertainment is enjoying massive success with the sales of the PS4, having recently surpassed ten million units sold through to customers, there’s an arm of the company that is working on a future vision where consoles might not be necessary anymore.

So the future is with PC games?

BlindMango3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

Not just PC, the future is probably where you could stream (and possibly download games) to your TV's, PC's, Tablets, etc... via the PlayStation app, Xbox app, Nintendo app, Steam app, etc. without needing a dedicated console box to play. Similar to how Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, etc. operate right now.

OnLive tried to do that right now, but was way too early - internet and devices aren't quite ready.

I do hope that these companies still allow all games to be downloaded to those devices when the time comes in full force (probably a decade or two from now). Having downloads is important and has a sense of ownership and better quality.

kryteris3959d ago

video streaming, not downloading.

iamnsuperman3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

I don't personally think it will ever get to that point (as the rate of hardware evolution, and in a way video game evolution, is far more frequent than upgrading the internet which is slow and costly) but it always good for them to prepare for that day. It isn't like they will totally abandon consoles in the next couple of years

johndoe112113959d ago

@iamnsuperman

If it ever reaches that stage i'm quitting gaming. I will never support a gaming industry that completely takes away my rights to fully own my games.

Assault93959d ago

No, I want my powerful consoles.
Period.

BattleAxe3959d ago

PS Now will probably end up competing with Steam on PC and Mac one day. They will need to have a download service in addition to their streaming service for it to work though. It's inevitable that consoles as we know them, will disappear. Sony is clearly looking to get more into services, and increasingly they seem to be wanting out of the hardware business, which we saw earlier this year with their sell off of their PC division (Vaio).

Cueil3959d ago

@Johndoe sir... you've never fully owned any game... ever... that's reality. You've only owned the media that the game was stored on

johndoe112113959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

@Cueil

That is absolutely 100% NOT true. That is what the gaming industry wants you to think. Some how or the other when the gaming medium moved from cartridge to disks they were able to get people to start believing they no longer had rights as gamers. That is sad beyond belief. I 100% own every atari 2600, nintendo and super nintendo cartridge and the game on it that I have. We need a lot LESS people thinking the way you are.

mananimal3958d ago (Edited 3958d ago )

@BlindMango

Correct......The Interactive Entertainment Industry called video gaming is moving towards an ALL DIGITAL experience.

No physical copies of anything, but complete control of your entertainment access.

WHY?

If I told you, you wouldn't believe it anyhow.

Magnes3958d ago

I see it like steam a sony/ms/origin/uplay all on PC the console enviorment running in a bubble on a gamers pc .

Sounds like the future everyone bashed Microsoft about. Yet they still thinking about it. Funny

pwnsause_returns3959d ago

Microsofts future was DRM.

Lets not forget that.

Kavorklestein3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

Sony's way of doing things is doing whatever they want. And people support it faithfully and sometimes blindly.

Microsoft has the exact same approach, but they are hated on and bashed twice as hard for wanting similar things or having similar ideas. The only difference is timing.

The rule of thumb is that no matter who does what or why, Sony is somehow always classified as good for doing things and Microsoft is somehow always classified as bad.

It's ridiculous that people act like there's more to the industry or to these companies than money. $$$ wins every time.

The amount of people getting mad or hating an idea always leaps to a number in the millions when people find out Microsoft is behind it. Regardless of what it is.

Pathetic world we live in, especially when these same people will turn around and support Apple and buy an iphone or MacBook each time a new on come out. At least Microsoft TRIES to make their consoles last longer than a year before a new model comes out.

Anit consumerism is rampant no matter what company you support. So why don't we stop acting like there's such a difference when things are more similar than ever?

MRMagoo1233959d ago

Yes they are thinking about it for a long time away not any time soon, that's the difference , it may work in 2020 but it won't happen any time soon.

Guys... Microsoft tried to DRM OFFLINE PLAY OF DISCS. Sony is trying to stream it as a rental mainly.

BG115793959d ago

And people will bash Sony the same way if they do this.
What is your point?
When something ain't good, it ain't good.

Godmars2903959d ago

The difference with what MS did and what Sony is planning is the difference fast, or slowly boiling a living frog. The difference being that in one case the frog, realizing the danger, jumps out of an already boiling pot. In the second, being cold blooded, the frog never realizes they're being killed as the pot is slowly brought to boil.

The end result is still not good for the frog.

specialguest3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

Yeap, it wasn't too long ago when The Cloud was all things bad and later PSNow was the future when Sony incorporated cloud technology... well here's your bright future folks! Enjoy your non-console future which features input lag, streaming quality graphics, and no true ownership of your games. Once you suspend your membership, you will no longer have access to those purchased games. No, this is not like Steam. You do not rent games in Steam and stream them.

Godmars2903959d ago

@specialguest:
You act like something like that couldn't come to steam or that steam couldn't enact policies that amount to such.

ALLWRONG3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

"Microsofts future was DRM." Yeah it was (WAS) but they didn't go through with it.

Sony's present is DRM. Lets not forget that.

Funny how Sony can add DRM that cripples the PS4 http://n4g.com/news/1571961... and PSNow is nothing but DRM, but PS fans still give MS crap about something they didn't do.

What ever happened to Sony saying "NO DRM" and no "online checks"? So basically lied about everything at E3. And they get a free pass?

Now PS fans suddenly support the cloud. PS fans are like a bunch of flip flop shoes. Sony and PS fans are the biggest hypocrites in gaming.

DigitalRaptor3958d ago (Edited 3958d ago )

@ ALLWRONG

Why is it always the one-bubble Xbox fanboys that have absolutely no idea about what they're talking about? It would help if you didn't bring conjecture and hear'say that you have turned into your own version of reality.
==============

"Yeah it was (WAS) but they didn't go through with it."

And that makes any difference? They planned crippling, anti-consumer, controlling, monopolistic, money-grubbing DRM practices as the basis of their console and had to get rid of it due to something that should have been obvious to them in the first place.
==============

"Sony's present is DRM. Lets not forget that."

Any digital-based purchases will have DRM, you absolutely numpty. How do you expect that to work otherwise? Physical discs don't have DRM, and that is what people were glad about, and what people were angry at Microsoft for. Learn to actually understand what people are bashing on, before you get angry and defensive about what they're saying about your precious company.
==============

"Funny how Sony can add DRM that cripples the PS4 http://n4g.com/news/1571961... and PSNow is nothing but DRM, but PS fans still give MS crap about something they didn't do."

Are you dense? I mean seriously…. Are you actually dense?

None of that is DRM on PHYSICAL discs. It's digital game purchases that have had digital licenses attached to them since PS3 came on the scene. Do you think PlayStation fans are stupid, or do you just make crap up to make yourself feel better that you aren't a PlayStation fan?

DIGITAL PURCHASES HAVE DRM. ALWAYS HAVE. ALWAYS WILL.

It doesn't make anyone a hypocrite, and it doesn't' make any of the Microsoft anti-consumer hate any less relevant seeing as they tried to do that with physical discs, and have it so you had to check in every 24-hours for disc-based content. Sony has NONE of that.
==============

"What ever happened to Sony saying "NO DRM" and no "online checks"? So basically lied about everything at E3. And they get a free pass?"

NO DRM on physical discs, you fool. Watch it again and learn from your lack of comprehension: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

I know it hurts to watch anything PlayStation related, but if you did, you'd not even be trying to pass off what Sony is doing as hypocritical or lies.
==============

"Now PS fans suddenly support the cloud. PS fans are like a bunch of flip flop shoes. Sony and PS fans are the biggest hypocrites in gaming."

Is it that? Or is it you have your head on backwards and cannot think critically? PlayStation Now actually works and has tangible benefits. You don't mock a company to promising CLOUD STREAMING and then delivering it. They only ever promised the ability to stream game content.

Microsoft said that their version of the cloud will do magic and make their console "4 times as powerful" and "improve graphics".

It's a shame you only see what your burning bias allows you to. If you want to try and place a "hypocrite" tag on Sony fans, then you will have to accept the mantle for MS/Xbox fanboys being the "biggest liars in gaming". I'm sick of the lies quite frankly, but you guys will never stop spreading them. You just believe what other fanboys tell you from half-comprehended news articles and spread them as lies based on your agenda. It's disgusting.

HumanatPlay3959d ago

Yes the future is with PC games lmao. I for one am not in the business of paying for streaming services that could fail or won't be available to my less fortunate friends around the globe. So the day SONY goes this route, I'm taking my money else where.

DeadlyFire3958d ago (Edited 3958d ago )

Not really, but yes kinda.

Basically we will get Cloud service applications from all of them(Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft) on every Operating system that is popular. ARM, Android, Rest of mobile chain, as well as Windows, Linux, Mac, and so on. There will still be consoles for a very long time. Its a slow process I believe.

Price point and bandwidth will hold it back for awhile though so we can still expect new consoles for another 30 years I say if not more. Digital streaming is growing, but its not near big enough for a total conversion for a really long time. Everyone most likely will have to have 50-100 mbps before its remotely possible to have an all digital platform with no hiccups.

Paprika3958d ago

Yes, let's phase out a console but keep those monster rigs lol

Maybe you could eventually power your own cloud stream for your friends though, be pretty cool if I had a $5k PC which my friends could stream from on their TV or phone!

Paprika3958d ago

Might I add the first paragraph I said was 100% sarcasm...

DarkOcelet3959d ago

I hope that never happens , it just doesnt feel the same without owning a physical copy of the game or a physical console . I remember the first disc i had , it was grand turismo and it looked awesome , along with syphon filter and mgs1 and parasite eve 2 , i used to look alot at the back of the case and admire the beauty of it before i play it . Life is just going too fast :( .

Abriael3959d ago

I agree. Personally, I think it's inevitable that gaming will move somewhat in the cloud in the (hopefully far) future.

Tho I hope that physical gaming machines (consoles and PCs) will always be there, maybe optional, bit still there.

incredibleMULK3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

@dark oceolot
Yes who needs square footage!

Now excuse me while I gaze at my defender atari 2600 cartridge for a couple of hours.

johndoe112113959d ago

@incredibleMULK

Let me let you in on a little secret. I still own an atari 2600 with about forty two games and I still play jr. pac and solaris up to this day. That's the whole point. Atati practically went out of business and stopped making and supporting game systems more than 20 years now and I can still enjoy those games today. Only an idiot will want to pass up on that privilege.

CloudRap3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

Agreed and if the consumers crucified MS last year for Always online and DRM imagine this, the fact is it will never be feasible and the Cable companies sure wont have PSnow datahogging them.

come_bom3959d ago

No. It's only bad if Microsoft does it, but since it's Sony, it's ok.

MRMagoo1233959d ago

@come_bum

If you took off your little xbone fanboy glasses you would see most people in this thread don't like the idea and would rather it didn't happen, don't you guys get sick of trying to play the Sony too and the hypocrite cards ? All you do is look pathetic. Try adding to the discussion sometime you may find the site more pleasant and if that fails at least other people will find it more pleasant if you discuss rather than try to start an argument or complain about MS being bullied.

Muzikguy3959d ago

@Magoo
Nice (+1)

It's not a Sony vs Microsoft thing. It's more people see a vision of a future they don't like

kryteris3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

I hope it does, would be the the return of the arcade. New and improved hardware on the server end would be limitless depending on demand.

s45gr323959d ago

Is going to happen whether people like it or not. The advantages are huge able to move from service to service by paying a small $10.00-$15.00 monthly fee. Be able to play all your favorite games at a click of a button, able to use family share plan,etc. These so call next-generation consoles are as powerful as my 2010 gaming PC. ....,

Imalwaysright3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

And you think it would just be a $10 or $15 monthly fee? Have you seen PS now pricing for just 1 measly game? The sooner people start realising that none of these companies cares about us, the better. They're extremely greedy and they'll milk us dry if we give control to them.

breakpad3959d ago

agree i hope the physical copies never disappear ..beacause is a form of a property which you own ...in a cloud system the copy of the game doesnt belong to you (even downloadable games in your hard drive) ..they can easily remove the right to own the game by blocking the streaming or even patching an expiration date to the product

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 3959d ago
SaveFerris3959d ago

But you would still need a device and controller to play the game, huh? I want to be able to play home console games, not mobile games.

3959d ago
Sly-Lupin3959d ago

Sony's never been good at predicting the "next big thing" with the gaming industry.

I just hope they realize cloud-based gaming is an inherently flawed concept before they dedicate too much of the PS4's functionality/library to the idea.

so pretty much like they are doing now. the PS4 is still kicking it through this PS5 gen. Many just dont adopt the new gen right away, and so why should they be left wanting while others who do jump in get all the spoils. I certainly dont mind them continuing to support the previous at the same time as the new. We have reached that point where games can still be made to take advantage of the past as well as the present. People who keep saying new games are being held back... well they just need to suck it up. Plus there is no proof of such things.
