Sony Is Working Towards "a Future Where Consoles Could Disappear" as it Tackles Cloud Gaming

While Sony Computer Entertainment is enjoying massive success with the sales of the PS4, having recently surpassed ten million units sold through to customers, there’s an arm of the company that is working on a future vision where consoles might not be necessary anymore.

Not just PC, the future is probably where you could stream (and possibly download games) to your TV's, PC's, Tablets, etc... via the PlayStation app, Xbox app, Nintendo app, Steam app, etc. without needing a dedicated console box to play. Similar to how Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, etc. operate right now.

OnLive tried to do that right now, but was way too early - internet and devices aren't quite ready.

I do hope that these companies still allow all games to be downloaded to those devices when the time comes in full force (probably a decade or two from now). Having downloads is important and has a sense of ownership and better quality.

I don't personally think it will ever get to that point (as the rate of hardware evolution, and in a way video game evolution, is far more frequent than upgrading the internet which is slow and costly) but it always good for them to prepare for that day. PS Now will probably end up competing with Steam on PC and Mac one day. They will need to have a download service in addition to their streaming service for it to work though. It's inevitable that consoles as we know them, will disappear. Sony is clearly looking to get more into services, and increasingly they seem to be wanting out of the hardware business, which we saw earlier this year with their sell off of their PC division (Vaio).

Sony's way of doing things is doing whatever they want. And people support it faithfully and sometimes blindly.

Microsoft has the exact same approach, but they are hated on and bashed twice as hard for wanting similar things or having similar ideas. The only difference is timing.

The difference with what MS did and what Sony is planning is the difference fast, or slowly boiling a living frog. The difference being that in one case the frog, realizing the danger, jumps out of an already boiling pot. In the second, being cold blooded, the frog never realizes they're being killed as the pot is slowly brought to boil.

Basically we will get Cloud service applications from all of them(Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft) on every Operating system that is popular. ARM, Android, Rest of mobile chain, as well as Windows, Linux, Mac, and so on. There will still be consoles for a very long time. Its a slow process I believe.

Price point and bandwidth will hold it back for awhile though so we can still expect new consoles for another 30 years I say if not more. Digital streaming is growing, but its not near big enough for a total conversion for a really long time. Everyone most likely will have to have 50-100 mbps before its remotely possible to have an all digital platform with no hiccups.

I remember the first disc i had , it was grand turismo and it looked awesome , along with syphon filter and mgs1 and parasite eve 2 , i used to look alot at the back of the case and admire the beauty of it before i play it . Nope, probably not going to happening in my lifetime and probably won't happen Australia by the time it happens in every other country.

Updating telecommunications infrastructure is expensive, by now, every country should be preparing or moving towards fibre optics (Australia has more or less dropped that plan... great).

I won't buy games digital because I haven't got internet capable of it, so I only buy physical, if I can't, I just don't buy the product (lost a sale that company could have had). Plus, I like having a collection on my shelf despite the fact hard drive storage is so cheap now (2 Terebytes for $100 stores alot of games these days).

I also feel that local storage is safer and more reliable then off site/streaming is (if the service goes down then you can't play).

I actually believe ms will be the 1st company to have a cloud console for 2 reasons. 1 they are pushing cloud computing and not only in games but their other products as well and 2 it would be cheaper for them then actually designing and releasing a new physical machine. Yeah, no. It won't happen. Fact is, most of the planet doesn't have the sort of internet infrastructure needed to support a 'video game streaming' market to any significant degree. Internet companies in the US are already having problems supporting TV streaming services like Hulu or Netflix, and are imposing draconian data limits to keep things under control. So unless something dramatically changes in the next 10 to 20 years, I doubt the Cloud gaming model will ever actually get anywhere.

It depends. For a lot of people, decent internet is expensive and there are almost always data limits. Video game streaming would require a fairly fast connection and would eat up a lot of data, which would be beyond the reach of most people. It's why there was so much backlash against the 'Always Online' aspect of the X1.

I know I'd sure as hell like to just download an app or buy a 100 dollar streaming device compared to paying 400 to 500 dollars for a new console every 7 years. If it's feasible then I wouldn't mind it one bit. That would cut the cost of gaming down a lot. Cloud gaming is the future. I prefer Microsoft's direction though. Using hardware and the cloud to make better games.

Game streaming will improve also when peoples connections get better.

I'm not sure this can get off the ground anytime soon. How will they reduce the latency if you play multiplayer? Streaming a game with 64 players would be horrible least now.

The same way ps now works duh. It doesn't require you to download anything but the app and it works suprisingly well and when its fully launched will work on just tvs and tablets. I still think that whoever tries it first as their primary game service without a console or pc will fail. Maybe 20 years from now a company might get away with a completly cloud based game service but not until internet is cheaper, more reliable and without limits on data.

Well, I said this when I first heard of PSNow that this is definitely the vision of Sony. I was met with a lot of negativity, hate and insults.

But it is pretty obvious that this is where Sony wants to go in the future. PSNow is definitely the foundation to this future. Of course many people will not want it but they will accept it as we have accepted downloading movies and music.

People keep saying they won't support this or stop playing games but just like the PC argument where will these gamers go to play certain exclusive games? It's just like how many claimed they would never pay to play online and quickly swept that under the rug.

Until things like net neutrality and internet infrastructure gets sorted out pure Cloud based gaming will not be possible, or will be very messy and anti-consumer. Internet rates will increase, streaming could become unstable, and things like subscriptions and latency will get out of hand.

As far as those who "have to" have a physical copy of your games. I'm the complete opposite. I brought 2 "physical" PS4 games at launch, and regretted it every time I play them since.

Why? Cause I have to change the damned disk every time I want to play the game! It shits me to tears. Every other game since I've bought digitally, and I don't plan on buying a disk ever again if I can avoid it.

It is sooo much more convenient to just be able to swap between any game in my library without ever having to leave the warm embrace of my bean bag. Swapping disks each time I want to play a different game is for plebs! Digital copies Ftw!

Streaming is fine for many games but it is not for all games.

Until a solution for network latency and stable network connectivity is resolved affordably world wide most AAA experiences cannot be streamed.

Also, while console gamers continue to insist on being able to trade games in, this reality will not happen.

Unless of course the console vendors all team with publishers and decide this is the only distribution model they will use.

Personally, I think it should be a hybrid model. Download and stream... Lower end experiences can be streamed, while higher end AAA experiences get downloaded to the console.

Until gaming is a fully matured industry (meaning innovation is only on creativity and storytelling rather than technology advances that create new types of gameplay) consoles will have a place. That could be this generation, but I feel that is unlikely as (console) 4K games are non-existent, and I feel games have yet to do everything developers want them to do.

I know for a fact in the near future you will be able to trade your digital games in. It is being worked on now.

If there is no PS5 & it becomes just an online service, then I'll stick with the PS4, PS3, PS2, PSP & PSVita, there are still plenty of titles I haven't played.
