Great game... Infinitely better with mods.

The standalone game being the game of the generation though? I'm not quite sure if I'd say it was that amazing.

sobotz4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

Skyrim is an epic game no doubt.. I'm still remember when the first time I fought a dragons, without cutscene, it just popped-up out of nowhere, accompanied by one of the epic soundtrack ever, it's really new experience for me.

But when it's compared to Morrowind and Oblivion, there are still many shortcomings. And, best game of generation? no. I'd prefer Half-Life 2, Bioshock 1, Assassins Creed 2, Witcher 2, MGS4, and Dark Souls.

TopDudeMan4338d ago

Skyrim had way more mass appeal than any of the games you mentioned, of course it was going to win an amazon poll.

I'm right with you, though. My personal favourite would be dark souls. The only game in which my playthroughs numbered in the double digits.

SilentNegotiator4338d ago

"But when it's compared to Morrowind and Oblivion, there are still many shortcomings"

Except the most important thing, combat, didn't suck like Morrowind and it wasn't clunky like Oblivion.

DragonKnight4338d ago

"Skyrim wins best game of the generation in amazon poll"

F**************CK THAT!

No frickin' way is a buggy, poorly written game with casual combat like Skyrim the Game of the Generation.

The Last of Us wins this hands frickin' down. If you played it, you know why.

Interesting note: There are no dragons in Skyrim. Plenty of drakes though.

baraka0074338d ago

half life 2 well the orange box for PC is the game of the gen IMO. Still so many playing TF2 it's crazy.

mikeslemonade4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

You don't know gaming if you don't consider COD4 is the clear cut best game of this generation. Consider 2007 and how it just transcended gaming for both consoles and the PC, graphically it was better than everything at the time, it provided new gameplay mechanics that other developers have been copying for the entire generation, and the online component has also become the standard.

Now Skyrim and Last of Us.. you can expect that after they made Oblivion and Uncharted. Oblivion and Uncharted are only a few steps beneath the quality of Skyrim and Last of Us. However COD4 annihilated Halo, Gears, and Resistance. Just.. there was no competition shortly after COD4 started selling like that.

Top games of this generation-
1. COD4 2. Uncharted 2 3. and then you can debate about the rest. The best game of a generation by definition should not just be the game itself. You have to consider many factors including sales, the game at its time, competition, innovation, reviews etc. You lump all those factors and then aggregate it. I've already done all the work for you though. The answer is COD4 and you don't agree you then you don't know GAMES!

LoveOfTheGame4338d ago

@dragonknight
I've played the last of us and it doesn't win hands down (there goes your argument).

COD4, Bioshock, Fallout, Skyrim or Oblivion(choose your favorite), Red Dead Redemption, Halo 3, Gears 1, MGS4, and Half-life 2 are all up their as well.

DragonKnight4338d ago

@LoveOfTheGame: Given that your list includes games like COD4, Skyrim, Halo 3, and Gears 1, I doubt anyone can take you seriously. Especially if you consider those games more worthy than The Last of Us which clearly has a superior story, cast of characters, and more interesting gameplay than twitch shooting or button mashing hack and slash.

Skips4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

^

Pretty much...

Halo 3 and Gear 1???

LMFAO! Not even close...

gatormatt804338d ago

@mikeslemonade

IMO sales should never be equated into deciding factors involving game awards. Sales and quality are not mutually exclusive.

For me The Last of Us was the best this generation. It was the first game to show true emotion IMO, and made me truly care for the characters. I loved the chemistry between Tess and Joel, and was sad (SPOILER WARNING) to see her die.

ICECREAM4338d ago

This poll is not valid, it's a multiplat game, more people have played it, compare to exclusives.
Not fair.

slayorofgods4338d ago

Any game could have been mentioned and people would still be complaining... That's just how it goes.

I think Skyrim is a good choice, although I'm sure we all want to give the lesser known's like witcher 2 and Dark Souls their props too.

Irishguy954338d ago

I dislike it, it left too many things behind for some new cool stuff. Overall I had more fun playing Morrowind and Oblivion than it. It's like Bethesda are slowly dismissing 'RPG' for a more casual exploring experience.

Snookies124338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

To be fair, I seriously doubt Bethesda will ever top Morrowind. That game was phenomenal for its time.

Mr_Pinky4338d ago

I think they even said themselfs that they wanted to make Skyrim "Accessible" for a bigger audience. When a developer uses the "A" word you know s*** is going down.

Your right though they left things behind which made the game fun. It always bugged me that for Warrior classes they removed the need to mend weapons/armour but for mages they still required us to do that stupid soul enchanting thing. Surely once you become a more powerful character in the magic field you won't need soul gems anymore. That's what Azura's star should of been for in my opinion.

UnHoly_One4338d ago

I agree with parts of what you said, but I still loved the game. The biggest thing I missed from Oblivion was the ability to create my own magic spells.

As a guy that always like to start a new RPG as a mage, that really disappointed me, because there were so many fun things you could do with that in Oblivion.

fossilfern4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

Its good but I dont think its game of the generation. Infact I think Skyrim is the weakest out of all the elder scrolls (excluding redguard and battle spire).

My favorite ES game has to be Daggerfall! But in terms of game of the generation I cant really decide, for me personally I think most games this generation have been over rated and the ones that are good arent outstanding IMO.

Mr_Pinky4338d ago

This is hilarious, I remember when Bethesda won "Studio of the Year" or Valve and NaughtyDog and also won "Game of the Year" over Uncharted 3 and Portal 2

I mean do people just look at Skyrim and go "OMG SKYRIM IT'S SOOOO GOOD, IT'S AMAZING BECAUSE OF DRAGONS AND SPELLS AND STUFF"

I know people who have never played Elder Scroll games before, called people for it saying it's nerdish and think Skyrim is the franchise it's self...like it's the first in the series

"Oh yeah Skyrim is pretty good but I liked Oblivion a tad better....oh but then you had Morrowind which was epic

"......What's Oblivion and Morrowind?"

LoveOfTheGame4338d ago

Portal 2 maybe, UC 3 not even close.

HammadTheBeast4338d ago

Skyrim is way over hyped. It's a good name, no doubt, but definitely not game of the generation.

After you've killed the first 3-4 dragons it gets repetitive, and the combat is sluggish and shallow.

I personally think MGS 4, The Last of Us, Halo 3, and Witcher 2 are much more deserving.

sobotz4338d ago

Without its story, The Last of Us is much more repetitive than Skyrim. You just had to throw some brick, shoot things, and punch some infected.

RememberThe3574338d ago

Am I off when I say God of War 3? I haven't played The Last of Us, but nothing this generation felt anything like GoW3. There were other fantacy games, there were other shooters, but nothing compared to the death opera that was GoW3.

Also loved Red Dead Redemption, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 2, and GTA5 seems like it's exactly the GTA I've been asking for. I love Skyrim so I can't argue against it, but to me GoW3 was the most epic, immersing, and beautifully brutal game of this generation.

DragonKnight4338d ago

Play The Last of Us. I'm completely serious when I say nothing compares to it.

dasbeer884338d ago

God of War 3 was great during the first time experience...but it got repetitive like its predecessors after the second and third playthrough.
I still think God of War 2 is the best of the series.

Skips4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

"Am I off when I say God of War 3?"

Not completely...

It's definitely a contender. Would hands down definitely put and play it over other games on the list. (Skyrim, The Walking Dead, GTA IV)...

Fighting some bosses felt more epic than fighting all the dragons in Skyrim combined...

Tetsujin4338d ago

Outside glitches and obvious issues:

Skyrim for story and continuation post story

Fallout New Vegas for gameplay, character development, and weapon creation

Both for being fun games, and spending over 200+ hours per game, with intent on playing again someday (again outside the game-breaking glitches).

arjman4338d ago

Red Dead Redemption says hi

MestreRothN4G4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

Yep.

More like "most popular game" of the generation.

Put other high titles like RDR and TLOU as multi and they would have destroyed the winning paint-trading game.

Lisica4338d ago

Yep.

This is just a poll. Not sure which part you didn't understand.

ovnipc4338d ago

Game was great but not the best. COD 4 the best game of this generation.

frostyhat1234338d ago

Yeah, way to buggy. My personal favorites this gen were the original BioShock and Call of Duty 4.

AnotherProGamer4338d ago

than again any game is better with mods heck Duke Nukem Forever can be the best FPS with enough mods

TheTwelve4338d ago

UGH...what an overrated game! It isn't even better that Oblivion! Anyway..popularity contests are popularity contests.

dasbeer884338d ago

Tales of Graces F, Tales of Xilia, Catherine, Persona Golden, Ni No Kuni, or even Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII????
Sorry man, JRPGs gotta have some love too. :)

fsfsxii4338d ago

Thats not too popular or mainstream.
A gotg has to be a mainstream game.
Its the truth, a game doesn't get awards for how good it is, its for how popular it is.

But i loved those games you mentioned before

iamnsuperman4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

God no. It came out buggy as hell. I can't look past that. I would put MW, Portal 2, Uncharted 2 and Batman Arkham city......over that game. Mods may have made the game much better (in fact fixed the game in a lot of ways) but still the stand alone game being the best game this generation. Most definitely not

ApolloTheBoss4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

-_- Hold on, now. You did not just say you'd put Modern Warfare over Skyrim. Please tell me I'm hallucinating. I mean I wasn't too fond of Skyrim either but come on, man.

SnotyTheRocket4338d ago

The first Modern Warfare was one of the greatest shooters ever made. Don't judge it because you don't like it's sequels.

Smoovekid4338d ago

The PS3 version was not very fun. :(

Snookies124338d ago

We don't talk about the PS3 version.... I traded mine in rather quickly for a PC copy. Sucked that Bethesda couldn't release a solid version of their game across all platforms.

Welcome2Die4338d ago

Snookies that is exactly why that game did not deserve the praise it got.
IF theyre gonna make a game they need to make it work for everyone, and there is absolutely no excuse for skyrim not to work on the PS3 except for lazy devellopers.

khellendros14338d ago

I'm enjoying my PS3 copy. Then again, I didn't get it til they had worked the bugs out. Im 70 hours in and no problems so far.

Smoovekid4338d ago

The game corrupted my hard drive twice so I just stopped playing it.

khellendros14338d ago

@Smoovekid-That sucks. Sorry to hear that. Hopefully that was fixed with everything else.

Snookies124338d ago

My brother played the PS3 version much more than I did. He was over one hundred hours in. When he was in the snowy areas, the game was literally pausing with lag for 1-2 seconds every step his character took. It constantly did that and got worse the more time you put into the game. It was awful lol.

Though I did hear they FINALLY got it in working order after all the updates.

TheFirstClassic4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

The patches improved the ps3 version a lot. Theres basically no fps drops now. After the patches, skyrim is an awesome game, though not as good as morrowind. Demons souls is the best game this gen tho imo.

bloodybutcher4337d ago

that's true, after the patches game froze on me only once, during the final boss fight. now though, since i got new ps3(old one r.i.p.'d on me) and with no internet for now, it got unplayable for now...
i don't think i am fit to voice my opinion on games this gen since i only play ps3, but for this platform my choices would be COD4, RDR, U2, Demon's Souls

4338d ago
tommygunzII4338d ago

I platinum'd it in 280 hours with no problems.

My buddy started seeing people floating within the first hour, I told him to restart the game and he never had another problem.

golding894338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

Best game of this generation? Yea right. gimme a break people.

Although I am not surprise red dead redemption got this far in the poll. That game had the most intriguing story and gameplay from rockstar.

Majin-vegeta4338d ago

Sorry that title either goes to UC 2 or TLOU not some bug ridden broken pos game.

Coach_McGuirk4338d ago (Edited 4338d ago )

titles only on one system aren't going to win any "best game of generation" awards in an Amazon poll..

RememberThe3574338d ago

It's basically a pop chart.

MS could compress their games on disc

raWfodog37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Skyrim is still my favorite ES game. I’m playing through it again right now since I never finished it.

jznrpg27d ago

Morrowind is by far my favorite. But I’m getting old and played Daggerfall Morrowind and Oblivion before Skyrim

ActualWhiteMan37d ago

Yeah totally. Definitely won’t be hacking it Nintendo 🤞🏻

Fallout and Skyrim show us that talented developers make great games when you leave them alone

That judicious lack of oversight permeated everything in Bethesda's RPGs, in a positive fashion.

I much prefer a left alone Obsidian and Larian Studios. Bethesda's formula has grown old for me.

anast64d ago

Larian hit another level with DOS:2 and then took it even further with BG3. They do high quality work.

jznrpg65d ago (Edited 65d ago )

Skyrim was a letdown compared to previous games and so was Fallout 4

Kosic64d ago

I agree, I found it an interesting game. But nowhere near worth the hype (unless you include mods)

dmonee65d ago

Skyrim blew my mind when it released. That game took me to the gaming, promisedland. Going back to it when it was updated for the PS5, it felt slightly rough around the edges, but great for its time

TheColbertinator64d ago

We should leave Obsidian alone. Bethesda on the other hand should be kept under constant psychiatric observation.

anast64d ago

Skyrim feels like the game was made in a hurry with a disorganized team.
