Kotick expects 'no exception' in rising dev costs for next-gen

LoL, of course for AAA titles cost will rise. What I find funny is this douche has profited the most off a game that has ran off a modded engine from 2004. I am pretty sure the COD costs lest than the price of printing the game on DVD and this idiot wantsw to talk about costs. If Killzone 4 or Halo 5 come out, yeah then maybe it's justified at $65 or something, but unless they get a new engine and new ideas for once, then future COD games should cost no more than $40. Hell COD has some of the most expensive DLC and a $50 server app. Screw you Kotick.

guitarded774512d ago (Edited 4512d ago )

I'm not gonna defend the CoD engine, because it is time for a new one... but many of the tools we use in computer science are just refined originals. From programming languages to hardware (chip architecture). I don't know the specifics of the CoD engine, but sometimes it's better to make a piece of software better by just upgrading. But like I said, I don't know the specifics... they could be making the right decision by staying with it, they could be wrong. I hate Activision and Bobby Kotick, but unless we know the specifics of the engine, we can't really say they're doing the wrong thing from that perspective.

Oh, I didn't disagree with you... just my 2 cents on the engine thing.

LOGICWINS4512d ago

The problem doesn't lie with Kotick, it's with gamers. They're the ones who have popularized COD to the point that a $50 DLC pass is deemed acceptable. Kotick just happens to be the guy getting rich in the process.

TheGamerDood4512d ago (Edited 4512d ago )

He's already over charging for his outdated games as it is and now he wants to charge even more for supposedly next-gen games? lol Actually I was thinking just the opposite, that the cost of next-gen games should actually go down since they'll be going all digital.

The state of the COD franchise as it is, isn't all that great so I don't think he's in a position to dictate anything. The market and consumers will decide what they're willing to pay for a next-gen game and he should feel lucky to get any part of that cake.

0pie4512d ago

he want the dev cost higher so he can charge more for his activision shity games.

NastyLeftHook04512d ago

this tells me they want to keep call of duty the exact same way as its always been! OUTDATED!

majiebeast4512d ago (Edited 4512d ago )

I bet he is just saying that so he can make cod 70-80$. Its not like cod takes much to make. One guy he gets paid in 1 6 pack of beer, then he updates the textures and churns out a turd of a storyline.

LOGICWINS4512d ago

This will change very soon. People are beginning to open their eyes. It looks like Sony's coming out of the gate first this generation and IF Killzone 4 is demoed on the 20th, it's going to be a tough act to follow for any other shooter coming out in 2013.

Sorry, but Activision is a mediocre publisher. They aren't concerned with pushing boundaries, but more about making money.

dcbronco4511d ago

This is just pure greed. I knew Kotick would want to use the next generation as an excuse to try and raise prices. I don't believe it will cost more to make the games. I believe it will start to cost less.

Based on everything I've read, the hardware is getting easier. More complicated in design, but with the goal of allowing the programmer more freedom with how they use it. That didn't always seem to be the case. I've heard over and over how hard Nintendo was, each Playstation was. For all of the fanboy hate, gamers can thank Microsoft for making tools a priority. Sony and Nintendo have started to do the same.

That brings cost down. And as programmers get used to the new architectures that use HSA and program like DirectCompute and AMP C++, that trend should continue. If this is another 8 year cycle, cost will definitely go down. Which should lead to more innovation.

Kotick is just greedy corporate trash.

1nsaint4511d ago

The funny thing here is that activision spends more than 6 times as much on marketing then on development costs.

And that the development costs would rise is a given,
Most Devs are gonna have to buy new hardware and buy or create new engines

But rising the games price because of the high dev costs would be a dick move, but if there is money to be made i wouldnt be suprised if some companies will try it.

Luckily the norm is that high dev costs doesnt mean higher prices, look at GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption which both have cost over 100 million to develop.

dcbronco4511d ago

Sure, you have to buy new development kits. But that's a normal part of the business and they would have had to do that anyway. That's the type of stuff they will write-off.

But better tools will bring their development cost down. That has been one of Microsoft's selling points to devs. This generation proved it true with the difference in cost for the 360 and the PS3.

elhebbo164512d ago

marketing, licencing and all that mumbo jumbo cost more to make than the actual game itself.

While i appreciate the gesture.... all of these retro classics have been made available everywhere else. I am hoping to see some other Activision properties make their way out of the shackles of the 5th, 6th and 7th gen. Licensing be damned... bring back the Transformers Cybertron games.

P_Bomb26d ago

Love the Cybertron games! TF games have been shit lately. Would love to see that era revisited. I even did the multiplayer!

MrBaskerville26d ago

Is the retro classics for all consoles?

Obscure_Observer26d ago

Gaming is what it is today thanks to the PS1.

lukasmain112d ago

First game I played on my PS1 was FF7, and it was the best game I'd ever played in my life up until that point and for many years after. I was originally all on Nintendo. But since PS1, I've been mostly all on Playstation since. I got a Switch though

ravens52112d ago

Been all in on PS since PS1. I played Metal Gear Solid and FF7 on there first. I've had the Genisis, SNES, Dreamcast, Saturn, Gamegear, Gameboy, N64, Switch and all the PS systems except The Go and PSP

Knushwood Butt112d ago

I went MD > SNES > NEO GEO CD > PS2 > Gamecube > PS3 > PS4 > PS5

WelkinCole111d ago

Same. Was a Nintendo fan but after PS1 came out it was hard to stick with nin

Michiel1989112d ago

lmao copium. Bobby Kottick sucks and is wrong except when he strokes your ego hahaha come on man since when are we listening to Epstein's friend.

Outside_ofthe_Box111d ago

You're not making the point you think you're making...

Most would agree the PS1 was a pivotal point in gaming history. Has nothing to do with Bobby stroking egos lol.

If you disagree, feel free share what you think changed gaming the most.

darthv72112d ago (Edited 112d ago )

I feel like I was born at the right time... to experience the various impacts the gaming hobby has witnessed over the years. From the initial offering of Pong, to the cart swapping era of the VCS (2600) to Nintendo and the NES dominance and the new beginning of Genesis. But nothing is as transformative as the PS1. I was 22 at the time of its release and for the first time felt that gaming was aimed at my age group... it was more mature and just overall a different vibe than any of the previous generations / platforms i grew up with. Shelling out that $299 on launch day as well as picking up such classic as Wipeout and Ridge Racer. It was a magical time.

....and i have never experienced anything like it since. Sure there were better systems released after, but I was spoiled by the PS1. It was truly revolutionary... and everything after that was just evolutionary.

raWfodog112d ago

Your journey sounds a lot like mine. My first console was Atari 2600 when I was 7. Then I got a ColecoVision, Commodore 64, TurboGrafx, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn. What's funny is that I originally was not interested in the Playstation when it first came out. I had a Nintendo 64 after my Sega Saturn, skipping over the Playstation. It wasn't until Final Fantasy VII was released that I suddenly wanted a Playstation and finally realized on what I was missing out on.

109d ago
refocusedman111d ago

i agree with you that the ps1 was transformative, but I don't think that it was more mature than previous systems. the Sega cd and tgx16 already crossed that line with a ton of their titles.

Gamingsince1981111d ago

Yeah but 4 people owned them so it didn't make any impact.

Relientk77112d ago

The original PlayStation is still my favorite console, that and the PS2. I will never forget the vast amount of amazing games and everything complete on the disc, no downloading, no online, and games were just fun. I am glad I grew up during this era and I definitely had a great childhood in terms of gaming.

CrimsonWing69112d ago

I actually strongly agree with this. You have to look at where a lot of these major franchises started or became mainstream, and it was on this platform. It sucks seeing where gaming is now as compared to then, but it is what it is.

justsomeoffdude112d ago

Who the f**k is giving this man a platform to speak????
