Games Don't Have To Be Fun

David Cage "isn't interested" in giving players a fun experience with the upcoming Beyond: Two Souls. Some are surprised, but is this move really that unique or ambitious? Read on to realize why games don't have to be fun. Because honestly, some of the most successful franchises in history aren't fun at all.

I know right?

Games have to be fun. Everyone has their own definition of fun though. I know what Cage means, but he has to realize that what he may consider not "a fun experience" actually is fun to some people. To have fun is to enjoy and I'm sure many people will enjoy Beyond: Two Souls, therefore many will have "fun" playing the game when it releases.

I think some people are misinterpreting what I'm saying.

Just because YOU don't find something fun doesn't mean others share your opinion.

Fun is subjective. It is totally possible for people to find the multiplayer shooters that you find fun, boring. And those same people may prefer to play a single player experience in Heavy Rain because they find HR a more FUN and engaging experience than your favorite multiplayer shooter and yes it is possible for some people to feel that way...

badz1494286d ago

I prefer my games to be "enjoyable"

for example, Saints Rows games are suppose to be FUN, right? I don't enjoy them even a bit!

there are no FUN in games like Dead Space but they are sure as hell ENJOYABLE!

so, David Cage, I concur

wishingW3L4286d ago

this is from an old interview and as always some crappy site took it out of context for the hits. He doesn't even says that in the interview to begin with.

This is the the full quote:

“I am not interested in giving them [the players] 'fun', I want to give them meaning; I don’t want to challenge their thumbs, I want to challenge their minds.”

Cage never says anything about games not having to be fun, he just says that he's gonna make the game he wants to make. Fun or not.

***"this is from an old interview and as always some crappy site took it out of context for the hits."***

You're right.

And actually already gave my opinion on the matter in the comments in that old article lol.

Convas4286d ago

I'm good with a different experience. A game pregnant with deep meaning and sincere contemplation is fine, but PLEASE, don't tell me that fun isn't necessary.

Fun is the enjoyment of a particular activity by the person that undertakes it. So by definition, enjoying something is to have fun. From what I've seen of Beyond, it looks fun, so ... please don't start Molyneuxing about Mr. Cage.

"Because honestly, some of the most successful franchises in history aren't fun at all." Errr, what? Examples please?

BanditGamer4286d ago

Pregnant with deep meaning. . .My goodness I don't know who's more pretentious, you or David Cage

TheMrFraz4286d ago

I gave examples. I did not have fun playing BioShock. I get scared easy, so the whole time I just wanted to experience the story and get it the hell over with. Not fun, yet I'm glad I went through it.

Skateboard4286d ago

Heavy Rain was good at making me care about the characters and the presentation is a perfect 10, Beyond Two Souls is gonna be sick!!!!

Burning_Finger4286d ago

Games Don't Have To Be Fun.....It can be a satisfying experience.

_Aarix_4286d ago

If it isnt fun this it isn't really a game.

DigitalRaptor4286d ago

Wrong. If I don't have fun with a game, that's not to say it isn't a game. Just look up various definitions of the word "game" at its core and you'll see the different contexts in which games exist.

ChunkyLover534286d ago

Aren't games played for fun? I mean when I play a game I am always playing to have a good time. I'm all for different types of experiences in gaming, but the bottom line is that I need to be having fun.

Games are synonymous with fun if you ask me.

Interesting to see how this works out for them. QD have had a very lucrative partnership with Sony. David Cage is a household name among Playstation owners, and he might not have been if QD stuck with Atari as their publisher. Now they're launching Spotlight so they can circumvent Sony exclusivity? I imagine this isn't the last we'll hear from Spotlight.

Abnor_Mal320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

Weren’t QD bought buy Tencent, and if so then I’m sure there wouldn’t be anymore Sony exclusivity.

Ok it seems to have been NetEase that bought them back in 2022.

mjchitown320d ago

this is not a Sony exclusivity. you can clearly see Xbox One Xbox Series X ps4 ps5

Sonic1881320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

Funny you mention that because in a few Diablo 4 articles, Xbox was the only console that was tagged. It didn't tag playstation or PC and Diablo 4 is a multiplatform game

porkChop320d ago

Bro they had a 3-game contract with Sony. That ended with Detroit. They've haven't been working together since then, so they aren't circumventing anything. They have no obligation to Sony.

CrimsonWing69320d ago

Didn’t they show a Star Wars fake at a Sony event?

I might be wrong about that, but I feel like that’s where I saw if.

porkChop320d ago

I don't think so, Star Wars: Eclipse was announced at the Game Awards.

CrimsonWing69319d ago

@porkchop

The Game Awards, you’re right!

Kekewei320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

I don't think so. There some sources claiming Sony was not happy with their partnership at the end, they even canceled a project that was supposed to be the 4th ps exclusive from QD.

QD is gold! They make excellent games

mastershredder320d ago

Can’t wait for all those quicktime events and bash-you-with-boredom storytelling.

Snookies12320d ago

There's nothing wrong with QTE's. Never understood the hate for them. You press a single button to attack in most games. You press a single button to jump in most games. Why does it then become an issue when you press a button during a cutscene to do something?

JackBNimble320d ago

It's a niche market and not everyone is into that type of game.

RedDevils320d ago

I like their games, it's different from all the trash we seeing every years.

GoodGuy09320d ago

God was Detroit a gem. Hope that their new games are at least on par.

Heavy Rain was my favorite . Fahrenheit was great too

MadLad523d ago

Eh.

Beyond Two Souls and Detroit were alright for the most part.
They're still making games, so something going decent for them.

Supermassive is definitely beating them in this genre though.
