Okay at the risk of getting assaulted by PS3 fans I will preface the rest of this review by telling you now that I was not very impressed by Resistance Fall of Man. If you are a Resistance fanboy I would suggest that you stop reading now so that I might spare your feelings.
Resistance Fall of Man is the story of Nathan Hale and the alternate reality that Insomniac presents us. Basically Nathan Hale is a solider in the U.S. military around the time of WW2. The catch is that WW2 never happened because Europe was invaded by an alien race called the Chimera. You spend the game playing as Nathan on a journey to stop the Chimera, save Europe and ultimately save the world.
I will say that I liked the graphics in Resistance's campaign. The environments were well constructed and unlike other FPS's I didn't feel like I was playing the same level over and over again (cough, cough, F.E.A.R). There is a fairly wide range of enemies to fight and the Chimera designs are very well done. And I must say I liked the variety of the weapon designs. Insomniac did a great job of blending in vehicle combat to break up the action and add some variety. The game offers both co-op and multiplayer with a wide range of options to help keep the game fresh.
Sadly the things I enjoyed about Resistance paled in comparison to the things I either disliked or hated about it. First off the story doesn't really draw you in. I never really feel like I am fighting for the future of humanity and Nathan Hale is one of the least inspiring protagonists I have ever controlled. The game functions fine as a shooter but it doesn't really do anything new. Now granted there are plenty of games out there that don't do anything "new" but I found myself just trying to get through Resistance instead of actually enjoying the experience. To be completely honest I only finished it because I didn't want to feel like I wasted $50. Which brings me to the multiplayer; which feels like a poor mans Quake mixed together with a poor mans Halo. The maps are pretty bland and the combat is too chaotic and yet also manages to be boring at the same time. And for all those who argue that the game is "more realistic" than other FPS's, you sure can throw grenades pretty far. I mean some maps I would see people just standing in the spawn and lobbing grenade after grenade and never running out of them. I purchased this game because I had recently picked up a PS3 and I was looking for a multiplayer experience but I must say that Resistance Fall of Man sorely disappointed in that category.
All in all I didn't hate Resistance Fall of Man; I just thought it was very average. It does nothing new and does nothing to inspire you to want to pick it back up after you beat it. I must say that I bought into the hype and what I found for my money was a very average game that received a lot of hype it didn't deserve.
The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.
Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!
The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer
Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱
While it's been on ice for as long as it was around, the Resistance franchise has no shortage of quality.
My take:
Single player
3, 2, 1
Multiplayer
3, 1, 2
Overall
3, 2, 1
I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.
Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.
I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2
Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.
Days Gone director & former Bend Studio dev Jeff Ross says he pitched an open-world Resistance game to Sony; he wasn't interested in a Syphon Filter reboot.
Sony rejected an open world Resistance? Come ON guys. Stop with these timed deals for Deathloop etc and let’s go!
This plus the fact Days Gone hit 9 million has me scratching my head this week. Why so cynical?
As far as Syphon Filter goes, it's a shame that after two generations of leaks and rumors the game was never actually in development. MGS is dead, Splinter Cell might as well be dead from what we've heard. Sony's had a massive opportunity to come in and take over a dormant genre, and they're just dragging their feet. So many opportunities to bring franchises back and they just don't.
I really wish we got more grounded action-crime or action-espionage games, not everything has to be over the top action RPGs and have sci-fi/superhero/fantasy elements.
Especially after seeing that jawdropping Matrix showcase... we can really rival some great action films if done right :O
Shame about Siphon Filter as I believe there is a market for it.
Also, there are some rumors that Sony is working on a new game that mix both Splinter Cell and MGS features.
Let's hope it is true.
I agree with most of your points, except the sound...I was quite bored of the in game 'music'. It's clear this is an honest review and not one with an ulterior motive.
But don't let the PS3 fans get to you. I'm sure you'll have the occasional fanboy comment, accusing you of some thing or other, but some of them are actually alright people. Read and reply to only those.
You must have been playing in the private rooms. I never did, it's always a frag fest in the private rooms. Insomniac does need to work on the multiplayer aspects of the game to get things more, "under control" though. It's why I like COD4 online better then RFOM. I think things are looking up for RFOM2 on all fronts though.
