Darksiders: Wrath of War

Usually when you don't get a demo or hear, anything about a game then you can bet it's going to be mediocre or just plain awful. Darksiders however, is surprisingly good most of the time. Darksiders is basically God of War meets apocalyptic Zelda. You play as War a member of an ancient console who's job is to keep order between Heaven and Hell until mankind becomes aware of their destiny. However, demons play mind games and you are tricked into being summoned and Hell rises upon the earth, and basically mankind kind dies, and everyone is mad at you. So being the moral anithero that you are you take the task of saving humanity (more so to clear your name and get vengeance on who framed you) along with a wicked spirit (who sounds like the Joker) and go fix things, and that's pretty much the story without any spoilers.

The game looks good at times, and meh most of the time. The areas are as bland as can be, and with this game not pushing any graphical boundaries you would expect it to run at 60fps, but it's locked at 30fps (again most of the time), with occasional screen tearing. War and boss characters stand out among the bland enemy design, and animations are decent. One thing that I hate about some developers is that they put these great looking cut scenes in the game knowing the actual game doesn't look nearly as good (I'm talking about the introduction). The in engine stuff isn't as impressive as the cut scenes, but at least it makes for an easy transition instead of making your game look like trash after seeing CG.

The game plays A LOT like Zelda of War. so if you've played either of those games you'll pick up Darksiders quickly. However, unlike other games Darksiders doesn't feel like a complete ripoff (I guess since it's borrowing from 2 separate games instead of cloning one). The setting of the game is a city, which felt kind of odd, for a game about Heaven and Hell, but eventually I got over it. You basically go from one location to the next, go through the dungeon find keys, fight enemies, beat the mini boss, and beat the main boss which doesn't sound like fun, but it keeps you entertained. The combat is pretty much a simplified version of God of War so don't expect anything truly deep or revolutionary from it. You start off with your go to weapon the sword of chaos or something like that, and eventually you'll gather other weapons and abilities from the shopkeeper, allies (if you can call them that), dungeon weapons (like in Zelda). One thing wrong with the game is that there is a slight delay on the controls which isn't really noticeable until you get to the platforming sessions where you will fall to your doom even though you pushed the jump button.

Overall Darksiders is a good game that has flaws. However, the flaws are not bad enough to do any damage to the title. many reviewers have claimed Darksiders has no identity since it's neither Action like God of War or Adventure like Zelda (or whatever Nintendo says Zelda is), but I think that's what make this game so special it's more of a quest than a gaming genre. But in the end Darksiders isn't better than either of the games it borrows from, but it is still a game worth playing and buying (buy when it gets a price cut).

Score
7.5
Graphics
The look of this game is very inconsistent. Most of the time it looks between mediocre and decent, and occasionally it looks good with effects going on. However, screen tearing shows it's ugly face much too often.
8.0
Sound
Music, Voice work, and sound effects are all good. However, some sounds are late and some are even missing. (Example 1: the sound of landing from a jump is late, Example 2: The first gate rock monster didn't make a sound when he stepped away from his post).
8.5
Gameplay
Great in some areas and only decent in others. The actual combat is pretty much God of War for beginners which isn't bad at all. However there is a minor control delay that can be a minor annoyance when it comes to the Adventure aspect of the game.
9.0
Fun Factor
The game is fun which is the most important thing for this game. But some of the graphical, audio, and gameplay glitches will nudge at you, but never ruin the experience.
Overall
8.5

Very nice review...keep'em coming.

Thanks, I'm glad someone actually comes and reads reviews on here. Darksiders is a good game and it could have easily been a 9/10 if they held back a few more months (a May or summer release would have been much better) and touched up the graphics and fixed control, graphical, audio, and dungeon length issues.

But what they put out is still a good game, with minor flaws.

I was more of a jerk in destroy all humans, sleeping dogs and just cause but yeah gta v has to be up there and skyrim I got bored and used to rampage.

Mutant-Spud3368d ago

Being a jerk in Fallot 3 seems worse though because everyone is basically just clinging onto life, it's kind of like running amok in a refugee camp or something.

WizzroSupreme3368d ago

Yep, jerks are everywhere these days. In our games and on our streets. Jerks suck.
