You win some, you lose some. Unfortunately, Junk Store seems to have lost this round. It was removed from the Steam Store, mere days after being added. Many excited Valve Steam Deck users were unpleasantly surprised when they searched for Junk Store. So, what happened?
What Is Junk Store?
For a while now, the story around Junk Store has been slowly unfolding. For those of you who are unaware, Junk Store is a plugin specifically designed for use on Steam Deck to play non-Steam games. The Decky Loader plug-in is free, but the developers have been working on a paying app as well.
At the time of writing this article, it’s been around 4 days since the team behind Junk Store announced that their app was officially coming to the Steam Store. In a lengthy post, the team explained how they tirelessly worked on rebuilding Junk Store into a stand-alone app and how they overcame many obstacles. Finally, they asked the users to wishlist the app on the Steam Store, as it was still in development.
The initial reception of this announcement was overwhelmingly positive. Valve Steam Deck users worldwide were excited and willing to support and pay for Junk Store. The majority of players know that this app being available in the Steam Store would be a huge precedent for Valve. However, it seems that the users will have to wait a while longer for it, as Junk Store was subsequently removed.
Valve Steam Deck Users Offer Support
It’s safe to say that Junk Store’s removal didn’t really surprise the players. Many noted that the Valve’s decision didn’t surprise them. Also, some players took the opportunity to support the team behind Junk Store.
BBQKITTY noted: “It is going to be a tough one for them to do, big uphill battle. The good thing is the plugin they developed will remain free and open source. From my understanding, this is a separate program they wrote from the ground up”.
Another user, TuecerPrime, stated: “That’s a shame. I remember reading they were going to be working on adding UPlay/Origin compatibility which is something Heroic doesn’t have near as I can tell, and something I would like”.
We truly hope that whatever went wrong will be fixed, as this project could be of great importance. As for now, the players can return to their plug-ins for non-Steam games, or simply stick to Steam games. We hear that Diablo IV is the latest fan favorite.
