Some Valorant Players Lament the Addition of Abyss to Competitive Mode

Valorant Agent Jett

The patch released on June 25, finally added Abyss to Valorant Comp mode. The mandatory two weeks from the initial release of the map passed with a couple of hitches, but some players are pumped to try it out in Competitive. Players shared their honest impressions after playing on this map for a while, as well as the expectations for Comp and frustrations that would surely follow.

Abyss Doesn’t Have a Lot of Fans Among Valorant Players

Calm-Bell3940 shared: “I’ve played the new map like 3 or 4 times and it seems way too big. So, how is the map gonna fare against other maps? Would it be a map like Breeze/Icebox where everyone just wants it out of the map pool or would it be something like Haven where the second it’s out of the map pool everyone requests Riot to bring it back into the map pool?”.

Unfortunately, many reviewers were harsh. Treydroo said: “I think no one has any idea how to play it. Mid especially feels weird to play. It’s like a redundant part of the map, you either have to expose your position by breaking the doors or walk for too long to flank silently”.

Another player, gaspara112, added: “It has a lot of all of the major problems with all the worst maps. Too big, chokes aren’t foldable for defenders, mid is useless for anything but lurks, the best post plant is to spam bomb from the attacker’s side”. The most commonly declared downside of Abyss is the size of this map.

IfigurativelyCannot offered a Controller’s perspective. They said: “As a controller main, I don’t feel like any solo controller feels all that great to play on the map. Harbor probably feels the best on the attack, but I still don’t like defending with him, but I suppose I’ll figure it out the longer the map is out”.

As for the Comp expectations, they varied. PointsOutTheUsername said: “Not sure how viable it is for ranked, but I get a lot of enjoyment playing Gekko on Abyss”. A player, notConnorbtw, disagreed. They noted: “Ngl abyss doesn’t look like it’s a comp map. It’s more of an overwatch map than a Val map”.

How to Survive on Abyss in Competitive Mode?

Now that Abyss is added to Valorant Comp mode, the players will occasionally have to play it. Well, according to the problem Odd-Perspective9348 faced, they might not. This player reported: “I saw they finally added the new map Abyss to competitive. When I tried to queue, of course, the first time, someone dodged. Okay, sure that’s fine. I queue again, bam, another dodge. This then happens 5 more times”. Unfortunately, the only way to fix this is to wait for the dodgers to get penalized.

Another common topic is choosing the right Agent for Abyss. JEverok said: “I’ve seen a lot of Deadlock and she’s really fun. Whether or not she’s good… Well, it seems to be a pretty alright map for her”. Another player, italianssss, added: “I have been the most successful with Gekko and Viper (surprisingly) on Abyss, so I’ll most likely try to stick with those two as needed”. Other popular choices were Jett, Breach, and Yoru.

It’s silly to expect that everyone would like every map. We’d suggest you give Abyss another chance. Sure, this map is somehow huge and small at the same time, and as with any other map, it has some annoying details. Comp brings a different dynamic to all the maps, maybe now you might be surprised and start liking it. So, why not give it a go?
