Carrying an AFK player on your back is a tedious and annoying task. We’ve all encountered them, and the complaints against them just keep piling on. Unfortunately, some players who aren’t AFK end up getting the short end of the stick and being reported just for being still for a couple of seconds. Reporting random players as AFK has turned The First Descendant into a real witch hunt.
Descendants Share Instances of Unfair Reporting
One Redditor, goomptatroompta, shared their unfortunate experience with 3 Bunnys. They noted: “For context, I went to check/fix my loadout at the beginning of a fortress defense for 10-15 seconds. I was tilted from prior drops and surprised by the fact that one of the three Bunnys decided to not only report me during such a short time but also announce to me that they reported me”.
They explained: “Swapping loadouts is usually very quick. Sometimes a random enemy can stop it so I have to dip off to the side out of LoS or kill them beforehand. This time it took a few seconds because one of my mods wasn’t on”.
Unfortunately, many other players had similar experiences. Global-Elevator-9922 shared: “This happened to me too. The worst thing is that I wasn’t AFK. There are 2 Bunnys and 1 Valby, they go to the enemies and start spawn-killing them. So, I just sat beside the objective shooting the bomber and the few that got through, and one of Bunny said “Enjoy your report”. I told them that I’m not AFK and I’m just defending the middle area”.
Another player, boyinterruptedd, noted: “Doesn’t surprise me, honestly. I feel like in just these 2 weeks of being released some parts of the community already have this weird hostile and defensive attitude going on. Maybe cause farming is tedious or drop RNG is trash sometimes, getting in a bad mood, idk. God forbid you are checking your inventory for a second”.
How to Responsibly Approach Reporting AFK Players?
Obviously, there are a lot of AFK players in The First Descendant that deserve reporting, and you shouldn’t just take them for granted. One player, x_JustCallMeCJ_x, said: “I report people when I know they’re just trying to wait until the game pulls them to the final boss. If you’re moving and shooting and you suddenly stop, then I don’t see a problem and wouldn’t report”.
Zurrah offered some instructions to players who weren’t AFK, but just inactive for a short period. They advised: “Communication goes a long way, taking a second to say “Oops need to fix my mods” is unfortunately necessary”.
This player added: “Understand that people are frustrated, a LOT of the player base (15-25% from my experience) is just leeching loot and expecting others to do all the work. Unfortunately, TFD’s only real solution to AFK leeching is reporting. There’s essentially no AFK timer, vote kick, etc. so people are going to be way more liberal with reporting”.
We’d say that communication is key in a game like this. Not everyone can keep track of others’ movement, so if they spot you just standing there, their go-to will be reporting you. Announcing your absence will probably save you from being reported. Of course, the same applies to players who randomly report others as AFK. It doesn’t cost anything to check in with the other player before reporting them. Sportsmanship never goes out of style.
