In Star Citizen, players can enjoy various gameplay features, including space, aerial combat, and mining. with the introduction of update 3.18, a new gameplay loop takes center stage: salvaging. I have been looking forward to this feature for a while, as it allows players to scrape ship hulls, repurpose materials, and sell them for profit.

This guide aims to provide players with insights into the world of salvaging, including tips on how to get started, the best locations for salvaging, and how to store your salvage.

How To Get Salvage In Star Citizen

To start salvaging, you need to approach a ship and enter the salvage mode or take control of the salvage operator seat, just like in mining. This activates a new heads-up display (HUD) that shows you important information while using the salvage modules.

Once you start scraping the ship’s hull, it automatically transfers the materials to the dedicated cargo hold. At this point, another player must move the boxes from the machines into the hold.

You can also use the multi-tool to salvage ships at a slower rate. However, you can then use the salvaged materials to repair your ship or help out your allies who may have sustained damage in battle. However, the multi-tool needs to be created from salvaging in the first place, but it is a little costly.

Best Locations To Get Salvage in Star Citizen

In this process, the player’s success in salvaging ships relies on the presence of other players’ ships and NPCs. Therefore, there isn’t a definitive “best” place for salvaging. However, it is recommended that players focus on high-traffic areas where accidental crashes occur, leaving ships available for salvage. Though just be careful, and don’t get distracted by the beautiful galaxies around you.

The ports near major city locations are particularly suitable for this purpose. Many players travel to these areas, increasing the chances of crashes or encounters with turrets and security forces for those with a crime stat. Additionally, asteroid belts are often hotspots for crashed ships, making Yela an excellent farming spot for those interested in this gameplay loop.

Moreover, locations where combat is frequent, can also be fruitful, although they come with some risks. Other players might mistake salvage ships for hostiles or easy targets, especially those who enjoy griefing. Having a friend in a fighter ship can be beneficial to fend off enemies or divert their attention.

How To Store Salvage in Star Citizen

To efficiently store the salvage, players need to manually remove the materials from the machine and place them into the hold using the new storage refactor mechanics. The updated mechanics automatically arrange the boxes in a grid structure, making it incredibly convenient for storing the salvage effectively.

When playing solo, I recommend using the Vulture, mainly because the storage area is located near the cockpit, making it so much more manageable.
