Trying to catch all the starters in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet? Stick around for detailed methods and tips to obtain the Paldea region’s partner Pokémon.
Trying to catch them all in Pokémon is no easy feat, and that rings true in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as well. There are 400 Pokémon to catch across the Paldea region, and the locations players will have to travel to are varied. However, some of the most difficult Pokémon to get are some of the first players will see. When trying to complete the Pokédex, players will inevitably come up against this question: How do you get all the starter Pokémon?
The water-type Quaxly, grass-type Sprigatito, and fire-type Fuecoco are the starter Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, so every player will have experience with one of them. However, players can only pick one at the start of the game. This poses a problem, as you’ll need each starter and their evolutions to complete the Pokédex. This guide will go over how to get all starters in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, so that everyone has their chance to catch them all and be the Pokémon master they were born to be.
How Do You Get Every Starter in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
There are three ways to get every Starter Pokémon:
- Link trade another player
- Link trade between two personal switches
- Collect starters in Pokémon Home
Link Trade Another Player
The most common method to get every starter will be to trade other players. Players can link trade other players, and others looking to collect every starter will also be willing to trade starter for starter.
If a player isn’t willing to trade away their prized starter or has already evolved it to its final evolution, they can always breed their Pokémon for eggs. Pokémon usually need to be bred in male/female pairs, which would make breeding starters impossible, as players only get access to one starter. However, dittos can breed with any Pokémon, regardless of egg group or gender, meaning you can get eggs for your starter Pokémon this way.
- Only one code for a Hisuian Zoroark can be used in either the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. Upon purchase of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC, an email with your code will be sent to the email address registered to your Nintendo Account. From the in-game menu, go to the Poké Portal, then select Mystery Gift, select Get with Code/Password, and then enter your code.
- The Mystery Gift option can be found within the Poké Portal menu option in the X menu after you unlock the feature in the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. (This occurs after about 1 to 1.5 hours of gameplay, though individual gameplay time may vary.) An internet connection and a Nintendo Account is required to redeem the item in game. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. Each item can only be redeemed once.
To get a Pokémon egg, simply empty your party of all Pokémon except for Ditto and the Pokémon you wish to get an egg for. Start a Pokémon picnic and wait for a while. The amount of time you will need to wait can be sped up by feeding the Pokémon a sandwich that grants egg power. Check the egg basket at the end of the table once enough time has passed. One or more eggs for the Pokémon you want to breed should be found in the basket, with the number of eggs increasing based on the time a player waited and the level of egg power and sandwich granted.
Once you have hatched a few eggs, you can look for players with other starters willing to do the same. Many are willing to trade starter for starter, so looking on online forums may help players find a trade partner.
Link Trade Between Two Personal Switches
For players looking to go it alone, there are two ways to go about getting every starter. The first requires the player to have two Nintendo Switches, as well as two copies of the game. The player must make a profile on each switch, and progress each account to the point where they get to the first Pokémon Trade Center. Once here, trading is allowed.
- Meet new people, new Pokémon, and a new you at a prestigious Pokémon Academy
- The Paldea Region is home to a prestigious school where people from all sorts of regions come to hone their skills against each other, be it through academics or Pokémon battles.
- In Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, the name of the school, its emblem, its uniforms, and other details will differ depending on which game version you’re playing.
- Take classes with unique teachers who will show you what they know about battling, Pokémon biology, and more. Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure.
Catch an extra Pokémon on the main account to have something to trade for. Then simply link trade between the two accounts, leaving the main account with the second starter. Simply delete the save data from the second account and start a new game, repeating this process to claim the third starter.
Collect Starters in Pokémon Home
The final method can also be done alone, and, while it does require payment, requires less than owning two Switches does. Players must create three accounts on their Switch, and then connect them to Pokémon Home. Follow the same steps as the above method, getting each account to the point in the game where they reach the Pokémon Trade Center. Then move the desired starters into Pokémon Home. From there they can be moved into one box and sent to the player’s main account.
By using one or more of these methods, and player should be able to collect these starters. The Pokedex is tough to complete, but by using these methods, the first nine entries will be easy ones to mark off the list!
