The Diablo franchise has always been about ever-increasing difficulty, and Diablo 4 is shaping to be no different. However, for players who want to really up the ante, the Diablo series has Hardcore mode to really test a player’s skill and reactions with the threat of permadeath.
Hardcore mode was introduced in Diablo 2 as the ultimate test. Hardcore characters that died could never be played again, and would stay on the character select screen until deleted. Diablo 3 also carried on this game type, introducing further titles and rewards for players who made it deep into the game without a single death.
Many fans of the Diablo series have probably rolled a hardcore character at some point in their gaming experience. No mechanics are more punishing than permadeath, and suddenly situations that seemed difficult become much more tense. For players looking for that same adrenaline rush, will Diablo 4 have permadeath?

Will Diablo IV Have Hardcore Mode With Permadeath?
Yes, Diablo 4 will have a hardcore mode that includes permadeath. The mechanic is also more punishing than other games in the genre. Some games allow you to switch a character from a hardcore to a softcore when it dies, but Diablo 4 has no plans to allow players to play that character again. Players shouldn’t grow too attached, as players can’t escape death forever.
Will PvP Deaths in Diablo IV Count As Permadeath?
No, PvP Deaths will not count as permadeath in Diablo 4. Blizzard still wants these players to enjoy the PvP aspects of the game, as death would be impossible to completely avoid in large-scale PvP scenarios. As such, the current plan is for PvP deaths to not affect a hardcore’s status and instead punish them with the same repercussions as a normal player’s PvP death.

What Happens if a Hardcore Player Disconnects During Combat in Diablo IV?
Disconnects have always been the bane of a hardcore’s existence. In Diablo 3, your character would persist 10 seconds after you disconnected, meaning that was plenty of time for a player to die in combat. Blizzard has created a wonderful solution in Diablo 4 with the Scroll of Escape.
The Scroll of Escape will teleport players away from danger if the game senses a disconnect. This will ensure the player doesn’t die because of untimely internet issues.
The item will be rare, so players don’t abuse the mechanic, purposefully disconnecting often to save their status. Overall, internet connection issues seem like they may be less punishing this time around, so players can worry about the game state rather than their Internet Service Providers.
