Is There Level Scaling in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

Level scaling on Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s level scaling was a feature that many players were expecting especially with the game’s open-world style nature. Level scaling is a feature in RPG games where the enemies in the world increase their level alongside the player rather than having fixed levels.

With that said, let’s talk about how Pokémon Scarlet and Violet level scaling works.

How Does Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Handle Level Scaling?

Unfortunately, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet do not have level scaling implemented for the player (more on that later). The Paldea region is divided into four quadrants and each with five sub-regions. Each region has a fixed enemy level and difficulty and the same goes for the Gyms across the region.

This means that no matter what your player level, the enemies will retain their fixed levels. This mean you can be over-leveled for an area and come back to steamroll it. On the other hand, it’s entirely possible to run into enemies or a Gym that is way too strong to deal with for you. In these cases, we suggest you flee and return later with stronger a Pokémon.

Level scaling is a really important feature, especially for open-world games, as it allows for a natural progression that every player can experience for themselves. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s design opts for a more linear approach. When you start out, the game gives you the option to follow and complete any one of its three main storylines. Naturally, due to the lack of level scaling, you have to make sure you tackle these storylines in the appropriate order.
