As it stands, it seems that Larian are intending to follow the traditional Dungeons and Dragons 5E multiclassing rules to match with the majority of the rest of the game pulling from these books and rule sets. Multiclassing in 5E includes:

  • You can multiclass into any class that you meet the prerequisites for. The prerequisites are usually the ability score minimums for the class, but there may be other requirements as well.
  • You can only gain a level in one class at a time. So, you can’t be a fighter 3/wizard 2/rogue 1. You have to choose one class to level up in for that level.
  • Your multiclassing choices can affect your ability to cast spells. If you’re a multiclass spellcaster, you’ll need to track your spell slots separately for each class. You can also only use your highest spellcasting ability modifier for your spellcasting.

Of course we do not know yet how these features will translate into Baldur’s Gate 3 yet.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when multiclassing:

  • You can’t multiclass into a class that you’ve already taken 10 levels in.
  • Some classes have specific requirements that you need to meet in order to multiclass into them. For example, you need to be proficient with a certain weapon in order to multiclass into the fighter class.
  • There are some feats that can give you benefits when multiclassing. For example, the “Magic Initiate” feat allows you to learn a few spells from another class.
