Classes explained

Below we will go into more detail about each class to help determine the best classes in Baldur’s Gate 3, what they do, and what to expect when you play. With Baldur’s Gate 3 being an extension of the Forgotten Realms universe all of the classes below derive from their Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition counterparts.

Barbarian

Barbarians are fierce warriors who can enter a battle rage. This rage sits at the centre of their kit, letting them deal bonus damage and land extra attacks. The Berserker subclass in particular leans heavily into raging and wrecking havoc among their foes. The unarmored defence feature even lets them consider not equipping armour to be more mobile in combat.

Here are the differences between the Baldur’s Gate 3 Barbarian subclasses:

  • Berserker – Gain Frenzy, which allows you to use Frenzied Strike, Enraged Throw, and Improvised Weapon Attack as a bonus action. Frenzied Strike allows you to make an additional melee attack as a bonus action. Enraged Throw allows you to pick up an item or creature and throw it, dealing bludgeoning damage and knocking the enemy prone. Improvised Weapon Attack allows you to make an attack with an improvised weapon as a bonus action.
  • Wildheart – Gain Bestial Heart, which allows you to add your Constitution modifier to your unarmed strike damage. You also gain Speak with Animals, which allows you to comprehend and verbally communicate with beasts.
  • Wild Magic – Gain Wild Surge, which allows you to roll on the Wild Magic table to determine the magical effect.

Bards are versatile classes who inspire their party with words or music. Considered a support class, they have spells that primarily empower allies or weaken enemies with the aid of their high charisma. Their Bardic Inspiration class action gives ally characters an additional die to improve their odds. Pick the right subclass and you could even excel in melee combat.

Players will certainly run into other devotees across their adventure in the Forgotten Realms. Cleric is high on the list of classes in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Here are the Baldur’s Gate 3 Cleric subclasses and their key features:

Druid

Druids are masters of nature magic within the spellcasting classes. They can transform into several kinds of animals with their Wild Shape ability, and their spellcasting is just as adaptive as the Wizard’s kit. If you choose the Circle of the Land subclass, you can even replenish spell slots with the help of the Natural Recovery feature.

Here are the key differences between the three Druid subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Circle of the Moon: This subclass focuses on the Wild Shape ability, allowing you to assume the form of more powerful beasts, including the bear.
  • Circle of the Land: This subclass focuses on spellcasting, giving you access to a wider variety of spells and the ability to replenish expended spell slots.
  • Circle of the Spores: This subclass focuses on using spores to heal allies and damage enemies. You gain a variety of abilities that allow you to spread spores, deal necrotic damage, and even create a symbiotic bond with a creature.

Which subclass you choose will depend on your playstyle and what you want to achieve with your Druid. If you want to be a powerful shapeshifter, then the Circle of the Moon is the way to go. If you want to be a versatile spellcaster, then the Circle of the Land is a good choice. And if you want to play a Druid who uses spores to heal and harm, then the Circle of the Spores is the right subclass for you.

They are proficient in a variety of weapons and armour, making them ideal front-line fighters. Fighters can also choose from a variety of fighting styles to specialize in specific roles, such as defence or straight-up swordplay. Some Fighter subclasses even have access to spells.

Here are the Baldur’s Gate 3 Fighter subclasses and how they work:

  • Eldritch Knight: This subclass gains access to two level 1 spell slots, allowing them to cast a limited number of spells.
  • Battle Master: This subclass gains four Superiority Dice, which can be used to fuel a variety of special manoeuvres. These manoeuvres can be used to improve your attacks, defend yourself, or control the battlefield.
  • Champion: This subclass is focused on pure martial combat. They gain a number of abilities that make them more powerful in battle, such as increased critical hit chance and improved survivability.

Monk

Monks are masters of manipulating the field of combat. They can use their Ki-powered punches to push, pull, and stun enemies, and they can even teleport around the battlefield. While they aren’t the tankiest class, their unarmored defence allows them to sustain injuries while they unleash powerful attacks.

Here are the Baldur’s Gate 3 Monk subclasses and how they work:

  • Way of the Open Hand: This subclass focuses on using Ki to control the battlefield. You can use your Ki to push enemies away, knock them prone, or even stun them.
  • Way of Shadow: This subclass focuses on stealth and mobility. You can use your Ki to cast spells like darkness and pass without trace, and you can teleport around the battlefield using your Shadow Step ability.
  • Way of the Four Elements: This subclass focuses on using Ki to control the elements. You can use your Ki to create elemental blasts, create walls of fire, and even summon elemental creatures.

Which subclass you choose will depend on your playstyle and what you want to achieve with your Monk. If you want to be a powerful battlefield controller, then the Way of the Open Hand is the way to go. If you want to be a stealthy assassin, then the Way of Shadow is a good choice. And if you want to be a powerful elemental bender, then the Way of the Four Elements is the right subclass for you.

Paladin

Paladins are a hybrid class between clerics and fighters. They are skilled in both combat and support, and they can unleash devastating blows on enemies while also providing healing and protection to their allies. However, paladins are also bound by an oath, and if they break that oath, they will become Oathbreakers, a subclass with their own unique features and skills.

There are several in-game choices that can trigger an oathbreaker transformation, such as torturing Liam at the Shattered Sanctum or killing an owlbear and her cub. Each oath has its own unique way of being broken, and if a paladin does break their oath, they can reclaim it by paying 2000 gold.

Here are the differences between the three Paladin subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Oath of Devotion: This subclass is focused on protecting the innocent and upholding the law. Paladins of this oath gain the ability to use their Channel Divinity to grant an ally a vengeful aura that deals radiant damage to anyone who hits them directly.
  • Oath of the Ancients: This subclass is focused on protecting nature and the natural world. Paladins of this oath gain the ability to use their Channel Divinity to heal all nearby allies.
  • Oath of Vengeance: This subclass is focused on hunting down and punishing those who have wronged them. Paladins of this oath gain the ability to use their Channel Divinity to frighten an enemy or to gain advantage on attack rolls against a specific enemy.

If a paladin breaks their oath, they will become an Oathbreaker. Oathbreakers are corrupted by their dark power, and they gain a number of new abilities, such as the ability to deal necrotic damage with their attacks, the ability to control undead, and the ability to frighten nearby enemies.

Which subclass you choose will depend on your playstyle and what you want to achieve with your paladin. If you want to be a defender of the innocent, then the Oath of Devotion is the way to go. If you want to be a protector of nature, then the Oath of the Ancients is a good choice. And if you want to be a relentless hunter of your enemies, then the Oath of Vengeance is the right subclass for you.

The Hunter subclass is particularly skilled at fighting beasts, especially large ones.

Here are the Baldur’s Gate 3 Ranger subclasses and how they work:

  • Beast Master: Gains the Summon Companion feature, which allows them to summon a beast companion.
  • Hunter: Gains the Hunter’s Prey feature, which allows them to choose one of three options: Colossus SlayerGiant Killer, or Horde Breaker.

  • Giant Killer: If a Large or larger creature attacks you, you can use your reaction to make a melee attack against it.

Here are the Baldur’s Gate 3 Rogue subclasses and how they work:

Ultimately, the best Baldur’s Gate 3 Rogue subclass for you will depend on your playstyle and what you are looking for in a character. If you want to be a stealthy and mobile rogue, then the Thief subclass is a good choice. If you want to combine the skills of a rogue with the magic of a spellcaster, then the Arcane Trickster subclass is a good choice. And if you want to focus on dealing damage to enemies, then the Assassin subclass is a good choice.

Sorcerer

Sorcerers are natural spellcasters who draw on inherent magic from a gift or bloodline. They have access to powerful elemental spells, and their subclasses are also well-developed. The Draconic Ancestry subclass in particular lets you pick from a list of resistances and elemental attacks. However, they are also relatively squishy, so be careful not to get hit too hard.

Here are the differences between the Baldur’s Gate 3 Sorcerer subclasses:

  • Wild Magic: Gains the Tide of Chaos feature, which allows them to gain advantage on a roll and increase the chance of a Wild Magic surge. They also gain the Wild Magic feature, which can cause unpredictable and sometimes dangerous effects.
  • Draconic Ancestry: Gains the Draconic Resilience feature, which increases their hit point maximum by one for each Sorcerer level. They also gain the Draconic Resilience feature, which gives them a base armour class of 13 when they are not wearing armour. At level 6, they also gain elemental skill and resistance.
  • Storm Sorcery: Gains the Tempestuous Magic feature, which allows them to create whirling gusts of elemental air that briefly surround them and allow them to fly up to 10 feet. They also gain the Heart of the Storm feature, which gives them bonus lightning/thunder damage on lightning/thunder attacks.

Here are the skills that the Draconic Ancestry Sorcerer has access to at level 6:

    • Burning Hands level 1 spell
  • Black (Acid):

As you can see, each Sorcerer subclass has its own unique strengths and abilities. The Wild Magic subclass is a great choice for players who want to add a bit of randomness and excitement to their games. The Draconic Ancestry subclass is a good choice for players who want to focus on elemental damage and survivability. And the Storm Sorcery subclass is a good choice for players who want to be able to move around the battlefield quickly and deal a lot of lightning/thunder damage.

Ultimately, the best classes in Baldur’s Gate 3 should include a Sorcerer subclass for you, this will depend on your playstyle and what you are looking for in a character. If you want to add a bit of randomness and excitement to your games, then the Wild Magic subclass is a good choice. If you want to focus on elemental damage and survivability, then the Draconic Ancestry subclass is a good choice. And if you want to be able to move around the battlefield quickly and deal a lot of lightning/thunder damage, then the Storm Sorcery subclass is a good choice.

Warlock

Warlocks are magic-users who have made a pact with an otherworldly being, called a patron. In exchange for power, the warlock must serve their patron’s interests. Warlocks have a wide variety of spells and abilities, and they can be very versatile in combat and as such are a great contender for one of the best classes in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The Baldur’s Gate 3 Warlock subclasses have unique spells and abilities that reflect the nature of their patron. The Fiend subclass, for example, gains the Dark One’s Blessing feature, which allows them to regain hit points when they reduce an enemy to 0 hit points. The Great Old One subclass, on the other hand, gains the Awakened Mind feature, which allows them to telepathically communicate with other creatures.

The Archfey subclass is a good choice for players who want a warlock with a strong focus on social interaction and deception. The Fey Presence feature allows them to charm or frighten creatures in a 10-foot radius, and the Misty Escape feature allows them to teleport away from danger.

Here are the features of the Baldur’s Gate 3 Archfey Warlock:

  • Fey Presence: Each creature in a 10-foot cube originating from you is charmed or frightened if they fail a Wisdom saving throw against your warlock spell save check.
  • Misty Escape (6th level): Vanish in a puff of mist in response to harm, teleporting up to 60 feet and remaining invisible for a turn until you use an action.
  • Beguiling Defenses (10th level): Immune to being charmed and when another creature attempts to charm you, you can use your reaction to attempt to turn the charm back on that creature.

As you can see, the Archfey Warlock has a number of features that can be useful in social situations. The Fey Presence feature can be used to charm or frighten enemies, which can give the warlock an advantage in negotiations or combat. The Misty Escape feature can be used to escape from danger or to reposition yourself in a fight. The Beguiling Defenses feature makes the warlock very difficult to charm, which can be a valuable asset in a world full of deception and betrayal.

Ultimately, the best Warlock subclass for you will depend on your playstyle and what you are looking for in a character. If you want a warlock with a strong focus on social interaction and deception, then the Archfey subclass is a good choice. If you want a warlock with a more combat-oriented playstyle, then The Fiend or Great Old One subclasses may be a better fit.

Wizard

Wizards are magic users who have studied the arcane arts for years. They specialize in a particular school of magic, such as abjuration, conjuration, divination, enchantment, evocation, necromancy, illusion, or transmutation. This specialization gives them access to powerful spells and abilities that are unique to their school.

  • Abjuration wizards are experts in protective magic. They can create magical wards that absorb damage, and they can also cast spells that banish or ward off harmful creatures.
  • Conjuration wizards are masters of summoning creatures and objects. They can summon allies to fight alongside them, or they can conjure objects to aid them in battle or exploration.
  • Divination wizards are skilled in predicting the future. They can cast spells that reveal hidden information, or they can even see into the past or future.
  • Enchantment wizards are masters of mind control. They can cast spells that charm or dominate their enemies, or they can even make people forget their own memories.
  • Evocation wizards are experts in destructive magic. They can cast powerful spells that deal damage to enemies, or they can even create elemental effects such as fire, lightning, or acid.
  • Necromancy wizards are masters of death and decay. They can cast spells that raise the dead, or they can even drain the life force from their enemies.
  • Illusion wizards are masters of deception and trickery. They can cast spells that create illusions, or they can even alter people’s perceptions of reality.
  • Transmutation wizards are masters of change. They can cast spells that alter the physical properties of objects, or they can even transform themselves or others into different creatures.

As you can see, each wizard subclass has its own unique strengths and abilities. The best wizard subclass for you will depend on your playstyle and what you are looking for in a character. If you want a wizard who can protect themselves and their allies, then the Abjuration subclass is a good choice. If you want a wizard who can summon creatures and objects to aid them in battle, then the Conjuration subclass is a good choice. And if you want a wizard who can deal a lot of damage to enemies, then the Evocation subclass is a good choice especially when looking for the best classes in Baldur’s Gate 3.
