The Githyanki Egg quest has led many Baldur’s Gate 3 players into a dilemma over whether to hand it over to Lady Esther for some quick cash or to keep it with themselves and, perhaps, raise a baby Gith. Well, we’re here to provide you with all the outcomes so you can make an informed decision with the egg.

Can You Hatch Githyanki Egg in Baldur’s Gate 3?

The only way to hatch a Githyanki Egg is to hand it over to Lady Esther. Unfortunately, there is presently no way of hatching it yourself. Once you have stolen the Githyanki Egg from the Creché Y’llek in the Rosymorn Monastery, you can take it to Lady Esther at the Trielta Crags waypoint. There, you can simply hand over the egg to her for a reward of around 400 gold. This is a hefty amount this early on in the game.

However, if you are wondering what will happen after the egg hatches, some context is due in place. Lady Esther is a human who was sent to retrieve a Githyanki Egg. This is part of an experiment led by the Society of Brilliance to raise a Gith hatchling and indoctrinate it with their supposedly more honorable code. They argue that nurture over nature could prevail and aim to prove the concept through raising a Gith. While this might make you concerned about the hatchling, the baby Gith should be the least of your concerns. The events that unfold after you hand over the egg might make you reconsider doing so.

After the egg hatches, the Dwarf leader of the Society will name it Ptaris. However, despite the Society’s education and attempts at rearing a Gith, Ptaris will still slaughter them all, including Lady Esther. We know this is a very tragic end to the story that started with you stealing the Githyanki Egg.

You can later meet Ptaris in The Lodge Basement Docks in Baldur’s Gate. If you fail to convince him to realize his wicked nature, you will be forced to fight him. Once defeated, you can loot his corpse to find the Unflinching Protector Amulet.

What Should You Do With The Githyanki Egg?

After reading the sorrowful tale of the hatchling, you might be wondering if hatching the egg is the most morally sound idea. Unfortunately, hatching the Githyanki Egg is tied to the deaths of dozens of people. Therefore, the best outcome is dependent on your character’s moral code.

If you want to get minimum repercussions, we suggest that you don’t try to get the egg hatched by giving it to Lady Esther. Instead, you can keep the egg in your inventory and sell it later on for a decent amount of gold. Your relations with Lady Esther wouldn’t be the best if you didn’t give her the egg. But that’s a compromise one could make to prevent the tragedy.

However, if your RPG experience involves piloting characters of shifting moralities, then to obtain the best financial outcome, you don’t even need a Githyanki Egg. Instead, you can use the Owlbear Egg that you can find while exploring the Wilderness area. If you pass the Deception check, you can deceive Lady Esthel into taking the Owlbear Egg and paying you for the Githyanki Egg. Do remember, though, that Lady Esther resides in the unforgiving world of Baldur’s Gate 3, something she would soon find out when the hatchling Owlbear slaughters her and the society.

The most financially lucrative and morally dubious solution is to do the following. Give the Githyanki Egg to Lady Esthel and get your reward. Then, pickpocket the egg back into your inventory. Afterwards, you can sell the egg to a different trader for a nice sum. Moreover, Lady Esthel and the Society of Brilliance won’t be slaughtered in Act 3.
