Did Microsoft Force Sony To Announce Blu-ray 3D Support Too Early?

Sony has announced the upcoming 1.75 update will feature the long overdue Blu-Ray 3D Support for the PlayStation 4. The news was first announced by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, after Microsoft had revealed the Xbox One will be getting Blu-ray 3D support soon. Just over an hour ago Playstation's Twitter account has confirmed the 1.75 software update will be out next week with Blu-Ray 3D support.

This announcement is great for those still on the fence to upgrade to PS4 due to lack of Blu-Ray 3D support, but did Microsoft force Sony's early announcment or do you think this was a strategic move to get one up on Xbox One?

charliewong9803581d ago

3D Support too early. More like a year and a half too late. This feature should have been on PS4 from Nov 2013.

Abash3581d ago

I think they are releasing it earlier than intended as a response to MS adding it to their console. It probably was being saved to be part of a big update releasing in the next month or two, but they figured they might as well add it now as it's ready to be supported

ArronNelson3581d ago

i bet it will be glitchy. I think Sony quickly announced it, because Microsoft were going to reveal a date soon. This is what happens when greedy companies rush release dates, without adding everything they were supposed to include from the start.

Wonders never cease, why do gamers moan so much about these things? Just glad its on its way at least. Sheesh!

UltraNova3581d ago

Is this really conspiracy theory material? Really?

Was there ever any doubt we wouldn't get this feature sometime in the future?

Even if Sony planed this update for a later time how is this bad that they will get it out sooner?

Common people get over yourselves for a minute.

BlackWolf123581d ago

@UltraNova

you should have realized by now, in this generation of gaming, ANY tiny piece of news is worthy of a conspiracy.

@banhammered

Urr what?

My bro has a new Sony 4k TV that supports 3D.

@Amiga-man

Lol, thats the TV my bro has, bloody amazing.

amiga-man3581d ago (Edited 3581d ago )

@BaNNHAMMERED

Sony 4k televisions do support 3D https://www.youtube.com/wat...

As for Sony releasing 3d blu ray support it was obviously going to happen maybe they did announce it early because of some of the stupid fuss that has been made out of it recently, but blu ray support is just the tip of the iceburg.

Theres more to come, much more

bicfitness3581d ago

I honestly thought the PS4 had this feature already. Kind of a silly bullet point anyhow, as most TVs made in 2012 and later offer a relatively decent "3D Mode". I just watched Avengers a few weeks ago and it never occurred to me that 3D wasn't supported as I just pushed a button lol (Bravia X850B).

ThanatosDMC3581d ago

Dont care about 3D but would rather have a youtube app or youtube upload like they said on E3.

Volkama3581d ago

Bicfitness 2D-3D conversion on TVs is nowhere close to the effect of a properly mastered native 3D film. Avengers actually has some very good 3D as well, particularly when the action gets going towards the end. I recommend you watch it again after the update! :)

As for Sony suddenly having it ready to roll out next week, yes I would think it is a direct reaction to MS including it.

I always associate Blu-ray with Sony, so it is quite surprising that the PS4 is lacking in this area.

nitus103581d ago

@BaNNHAMMERED
"The reason Sony didn't want to announce 3D was because they want People to Forget About it cause the New 4K TV'S Don't Support 3D so it Would hurt 4K Sales"

Rubbish! a little searching would show that 3D is being supported on some 4k TV's as well. In fact many of the 4k 3D TV's will only require passive glasses.

XtraTrstrL3581d ago

It seems that may be the case, to be honest though they aren't in a position to be saving any major features for a special time. Once a feature is fully tested and is ready to go, it needs to come out, because they are ridiculously behind in general functionality. I'm not even talking about in a competitive nature vs X1, just as a 2013/2014 entertainment device.

We need mp3/video local/stream functionality to our own content, not the only option being a paywalled stream service that just happened to be implemented flawlessly since day 1 may I add. Though, they didn't realize how much we wanted to stream/locally store our own content? LMAO, oki doki then Yoshi.

ocelot073581d ago

100% agree with you. There is that rumour of 1.8FW coming out around Gamecom time adding media support. If this is true then I think 3D support was included with 1.8.

But with MS announcing 3D support. Then I think Sony decided to just roll it own in a small update before MS get a chance to roll it out on XB1.

Yaay4me3581d ago

that's funny i always thought microsoft was the greedier of the two.

MazzingerZ3581d ago

Who forced whom? SONY gave a date (next week) MSFT not... you cannot include a 3D update last minute just due to MSFT announcing it without any particular date...now the press is for MSFT for those that care about this feature...I don't even have a PS4 yet LOL...soon, with Destiny!

rainslacker3580d ago

I doubt it. Things like this aren't generally thrown in at a whim. They would have been working on it for a while if they were going to put it in. If it comes out only half-working though, or not at all, then I will retract my statement.:)

I agree. No...it isnt. I think its more in response to the last update and ppl clamoring for features that we know r coming.

Its not like sony was holding onto this as a way to sell more consoles at some point. Its a luxury service.

Muzikguy3581d ago (Edited 3581d ago )

I hit agree on accident. Year and a half too late we'd be in 2015 but the update is next week... I'm confuse-ed.

Whether or not MS made Sony release this update early isn't my question. My question is why it wasn't just updated to begin with, without waiting for MS to say anything. I seriously hope that's not Sony getting cocky. On another note, it's 1.75 meaning a minor update so that could be good news

Edit @thejackson

Who says they have to test it? You've never seen a bad update and one shortly after to counter the bad update? I think companies like to play the game that they go through all these checklists and stuff without actually doing it (not always)

lawgone3581d ago

That's my question too.

JimmyDM903581d ago

How can it be out a year and a half too late?? The PS4 only released 8 months ago!

purp13m0nk3y3581d ago

What I find strange is that you can play games in 3d (have been able to for ages) and yet no 3d BD support?

Makes no sense really. Surely if the current firmware supports 3d gaming, 3d BD should work too?

Eidolon3581d ago

Game 3D is software. Blu-ray movie 3D is BD-Drive firmware and software.

Hk85karlsson3581d ago

Haha, 1 1/2 year? More like 7 1/2 if you can count.

truefan13581d ago

MSFT definitely forced sony's hand. but even next week is too late, because many of the XB1 owners, myself included, already have 3d bluray.

Some objective gamers have mention this is why competition is good, I happen to agree. Sony just learned even though they have the top selling system, they still have work to do.

trouble_bubble3581d ago

Sony's too late? To what, their own party? The ps3 has already had 3D bluray support for years. Congrats to xbone for finally inching closer to last gen

sinspirit3581d ago

Totally. Just because they did it two weeks after X1 did it I guess the feature is pointless because they're "too late". I guess I shouldn't even drive to work because other people already got there before me and I'm "too late".

vikingland13581d ago

MS didn't force Sony to do anything, Sony is adding it to PS4 because they love and respect their fans /s

MeliMel3581d ago

@trouble

What a waste of bubble.

I'll answer that for you. Yes, Sony is late to their own damn party. How is it the originator of the Blu Ray platform doesnt have 3d support and the comp does....lol.

Congrats to Sony for finally making it happen.

jmac533581d ago

Oh wow, the great 3d bluray arms race of 2014. Glad I was here to witness it. I thought it was all about the games and now everyone cares about 3d bluray support and who had a couple weeks early.

trouble_bubble3580d ago

@mel
Did the announcement come later, yeah. But I'm talking about the words "too late". too late for what exactly? Is this console cycle over now? We don't even have mp3 playback yet. Year one first world problems, I swear

Back-to-Back3580d ago

@truefan1 You mean your parents own a 3d bluray player.

rainslacker3580d ago

Yeah, Every single person I know that has a 3D capable TV(4 of them), have an actual blu-ray player to watch blu-rays on. 3 of them have a PS3, 2 have a PS4, and 1 has an Xbox 1. Heck, I have a 3D capable blu-ray player that I've had for almost 2 years now, despite not having a 3D TV(half blind in one eye...doesn't work to well for me).

3D Blu-Ray is a great feature to have on a console that plays them, but it's far from a selling point, and I doubt any company is going to rush an untested patch out just because their competition did it, particularly when the market for it is so limited to begin with. This feature was slated for this patch, you don't just throw things like this in at the last minute.

GordonKnight3581d ago

It nice that PS4 is finally get 3D support, but I just wish Sony & MS didn't rush out the new consoles incomplete. We could have waited for completed systems with a larger launch library. IMO

RosweeSon3580d ago

There not Incomplete but things change stuff gets added, looks at ps3 and xbox 360 they barely stopped adding stuff only recently so what we should have waited another 4/5 years for next gen! Nah

Baccra173581d ago

As should video codec support, mp3's, and external hard drives.

LoTuZ3580d ago

Thank god for competition.

Tapewurm3580d ago

I am still waiting on the big name 3D games.... purchased a 3D TV for the PS3 and LOVED it!... The only game that I am aware of for PS4 that supports 3D is Trine 2..... PS3 games... Motorstorm Apocalypse, GT5, Socom 4, Resitance 3, Killzone 3, The Fight Lights Out, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War Collections, House of Dead Overkill and more were excellent in 3D...not to mention how great the 3D Blurays look.... want 3D everything as an option ... 8)

3-4-53580d ago (Edited 3580d ago )

Microsoft didn't force anything except ALL Digital, and that backfired.

* 3D Support isn't even important in the grand scheme of things, or at least in my opinion it isn't. Not for Microsoft or Sony.

FanboyKilla3580d ago

Lol anyone else notice when ms says anything sony stands up and says me too. Lmfao all of a sudden now they have an update. Thats so lame do yo own thang. Forza horizon 2 shows off its game and weather, here comes drive club, me too. Only we wont have ours in the game at launch. Hmmmmmm lmfao. David isnt going to beat goliath this time.

trouble_bubble3580d ago (Edited 3580d ago )

Sony says "Me too" all the time? Err, the Xbox Web browser, GWG, bluray, blutooth, wifi, hdmi, 3D, DTS, cloud backup, Twitch all say "me too" right back atcha. I don't even think MS has had a 3D game since Gears 3 in 2011. Sony still supports it with games like Puppeteer.

Driveclub was announced before horizon 2 was btw. Before that they made Motorstorm. There's a lineage here you're not seeing. What's Forza if not a "me too" Gran Turismo?

rainslacker3580d ago

GT6 had weather, that came out last year.

StrangerX3580d ago

It weird about this because, the update that I got this week on my Xbox one added 3D support and anyone can find It in the display settings. Which it was nice that they finally added. So I'm already enjoying it. Eventually everybody will, so have patience people. 😏

ITPython3580d ago

My guess is MS got wind of Sony releasing 3D blu ray support with their next big patch and wanted to 1up them for once, thinking Sony hadn't finalized it yet for an earlier release.

But Sony ain't got no time for that, and responded with 3D blu ray support sooner just to give MS another middle finger.

Eonjay3581d ago (Edited 3581d ago )

They can't just program features on the fly, so it was already ready to be part of a bigger update or Sony was making a strategic move. All it really shows us is that Sony is working on features. I don't think they anticipated the demand for some of the leagacy PS3 features like media support.

Or its just a big coincidence and we should all be glad that both are getting this specific feature.

patelsanjeed3581d ago

I think they didn't anticipate a lot of gamers would want PS3 features, but glad to see it coming next week. Microsoft did force this decision, I am sure of it.

marioJP873581d ago

They definitely forced SONY to update PS4 with this feature. Plus with comments around the internet about how Microsoft beat sony to this and Sony is one of the companies behind 3D for blu ray and such.

user74029313581d ago (Edited 3581d ago )

nobody really knows. but we got it now so meh. :p

kingtroy3581d ago

Seeing how ps3 had Bluray 3D support i'd say no.

IcicleTrepan3581d ago

PS3 having bluray 3d support doesn't help the current generation whatsoever. The fact that it has it and the PS4 didn't was mystifying to me when I got my PS4.

WildArmed3580d ago

There are a lot of mystifying things this gen, it's best not to think about it.

I'll give the two consoles a year or two before I compare them to more complete consoles like X360 and PS3.

BitbyDeath3581d ago

It's said to be arriving next week.
The update would take weeks if not over a month to put together... so nope.

Frankskint3581d ago

Everytime I want to watch 3d movies I have to plug my PS3 back each time. Next week can't come quick enough. We needed this feature right out the box.

Bathyj3581d ago

This doesnt effect me in the slightest, but I agree, it should have been there from the start.

GordonKnight3581d ago (Edited 3581d ago )

I've been wanting to move my PS3 to my bedroom, but the PS4 didn't support 3D. So, I left it in the living room in case I wanted to watch a 3D movie.

My PS3 will finally be back next to my 360.

All Hopes I Had For A Prey Sequel Have Been Crushed — Well Done, Microsoft

The magnificent Prey was once again abandoned as Microsoft disregarded Arkane Austin's achievements and crucified it just for Redfall.

RaidenBlack1d 1h ago

well, not entirely ... the main Arkane studio i.e Arkane Lyon's still there ...
Its only that, the sequel will take more time now ... after Blade & Dishonored 3

MrBaskerville5h ago

But who knows, Dishonored 3 could have been Austins next project, so might be cancelled.

-Foxtrot1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Not even this Prey

Still longing for a sequel to the original Prey with Tommy

The studio didn't even want to call this Prey, it was just Bethesda being dicks to them for some reason.

RaidenBlack19h ago

MS closed Roundhouse Studios (ex-Human Head Studios) as well

Yui_Suzumiya8h ago

Yeah, that's who was going to do the original sequel.

bunt-custardly11m ago

Don't worry there are some other games in development that might fill that void. Look up Vigilancer.

isarai15h ago

Came here to say this, my hooes for a Prey sequel died when this "Prey" came out

Profchaos6h ago

Prey 2017 still hurts to play because what could have been looked so incredible

Profchaos6h ago

Same Bethesda basically screwed over the original developer team human head back around 2011 so it was really never going to come despite a honestly amazing trailer. I liked prey 2017 but it always held a stink of disappointment due to what we never got

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

I really didn't like this game, tried it because of how loved the original Prey was, played the demo of this one and thought it was garbage, it didn't feel nice/fun to play.

LostPotato1d ago (Edited 23h ago)

Keep dreaming then as Prey and Dishonored 2 did not sell well enough to get sequels.

Hence we got Deathloop and Redfall instead.

RaidenBlack19h ago

lol, Deathloop came from Prey: Mooncrash idea

Unknown_Gamer57948h ago

To everyone who cheered MS’s acquisitions, we told you so…

Inverno6h ago

Those people will just argue that Arkane Austin and Tango would've been shut down either way.

MrBaskerville5h ago

Zenimax allready put them in a tight spot by demanding them to do a multiplayer title. So it's not unlikely, considering how bad the game performed. They didn't stand a chance. MS had the money to save them and to correct Zenimax' mistakes.
