Did Microsoft Force Sony To Announce Blu-ray 3D Support Too Early?

Sony has announced the upcoming 1.75 update will feature the long overdue Blu-Ray 3D Support for the PlayStation 4. The news was first announced by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, after Microsoft had revealed the Xbox One will be getting Blu-ray 3D support soon. Just over an hour ago Playstation's Twitter account has confirmed the 1.75 software update will be out next week with Blu-Ray 3D support.

This announcement is great for those still on the fence to upgrade to PS4 due to lack of Blu-Ray 3D support, but did Microsoft force Sony's early announcment or do you think this was a strategic move to get one up on Xbox One?

I think they are releasing it earlier than intended as a response to MS adding it to their console. It probably was being saved to be part of a big update releasing in the next month or two, but they figured they might as well add it now as it's ready to be supported

I honestly thought the PS4 had this feature already. Kind of a silly bullet point anyhow, as most TVs made in 2012 and later offer a relatively decent "3D Mode". I just watched Avengers a few weeks ago and it never occurred to me that 3D wasn't supported as I just pushed a button lol (Bravia X850B).

Bicfitness 2D-3D conversion on TVs is nowhere close to the effect of a properly mastered native 3D film. Avengers actually has some very good 3D as well, particularly when the action gets going towards the end. I recommend you watch it again after the update! :)

As for Sony suddenly having it ready to roll out next week, yes I would think it is a direct reaction to MS including it.

I always associate Blu-ray with Sony, so it is quite surprising that the PS4 is lacking in this area.

Rubbish! a little searching would show that 3D is being supported on some 4k TV's as well. In fact many of the 4k 3D TV's will only require passive glasses.

It seems that may be the case, to be honest though they aren't in a position to be saving any major features for a special time. Once a feature is fully tested and is ready to go, it needs to come out, because they are ridiculously behind in general functionality. I'm not even talking about in a competitive nature vs X1, just as a 2013/2014 entertainment device.

We need mp3/video local/stream functionality to our own content, not the only option being a paywalled stream service that just happened to be implemented flawlessly since day 1 may I add. 100% agree with you. There is that rumour of 1.8FW coming out around Gamecom time adding media support. If this is true then I think 3D support was included with 1.8.

But with MS announcing 3D support. Then I think Sony decided to just roll it own in a small update before MS get a chance to roll it out on XB1.

Yeah, Every single person I know that has a 3D capable TV(4 of them), have an actual blu-ray player to watch blu-rays on. 3 of them have a PS3, 2 have a PS4, and 1 has an Xbox 1. Heck, I have a 3D capable blu-ray player that I've had for almost 2 years now, despite not having a 3D TV(half blind in one eye...doesn't work to well for me).

3D Blu-Ray is a great feature to have on a console that plays them, but it's far from a selling point, and I doubt any company is going to rush an untested patch out just because their competition did it, particularly when the market for it is so limited to begin with. This feature was slated for this patch, you don't just throw things like this in at the last minute.

I am still waiting on the big name 3D games.... purchased a 3D TV for the PS3 and LOVED it!... The only game that I am aware of for PS4 that supports 3D is Trine 2..... PS3 games... Motorstorm Apocalypse, GT5, Socom 4, Resitance 3, Killzone 3, The Fight Lights Out, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War Collections, House of Dead Overkill and more were excellent in 3D...not to mention how great the 3D Blurays look.... want 3D everything as an option ... 8)

Sony says "Me too" all the time? Err, the Xbox Web browser, GWG, bluray, blutooth, wifi, hdmi, 3D, DTS, cloud backup, Twitch all say "me too" right back atcha. I don't even think MS has had a 3D game since Gears 3 in 2011. Sony still supports it with games like Puppeteer.

This is good news. The PS3 is still one of the best 3D bluray players on the market. The PS4 should have had this feature at launch.

However, I hate to say this, but the Xbox One is a better media player than the PS4. (PS3 is better than Xbox One.) The Xbox One is whisper quiet, has better video and audio processing, and it's focus was originally on multimedia.

Sony put games first with the PS4, and I know that made a lot of people happy, but I'm an old school Sony fan, who remembers their glory days as kings of living room entertainment. The only reason the PS4 is so focused on gaming only is because Sony is broke and wanted to make the system as cheaply as possible. So they cut a lot of corners.

What? And MS or Nintendo don't when designing their systems.... Theses systems are made to meet a targeted budget in order to make a profit of course it has to cut corners depending on what they are trying to achieve after all they would all be selling Titan level powered system to us for pennies.

However, things like 3D playback/Media functionality have very little to do with that when most are enabled by software.
The disc reader in the PS4 enables 3D playback, DLNA is enabled via software doesn't need any special hardware.

There focus on gaming as nothing to do with that. It's because they thought that was needed for them to success. You think MS dropped their initial focus on entertainment and are not "Games first" for no reason. Hint: their situation would be worst then it is now.

And because of their focus on multimedia their hardware decisions lead to compromises which affected gaming such as the choice of including kinect with every system in the beginning.

Here's an example of Sony cutting corners that Spotie won't know about. It will easily refute his anger filed rant.

Neither the PS3 nor the PS4 have a dedicated audio decoder chip. Instead they force the CPU to handle this task. Serious hone theater enthusiasts know why a dedicated audio processor is important. They also know this is a standard feature on even the cheapest bluray players. So why did Sony not include this chip? Cost.

I've actually found that most stand alone players nowadays are better overall in Blu-Ray quality. Can't speak to 3D since I'm half blind in one eye, so it kind of doesn't work so well with me, but I'd imagine it's better as the processors for it are more specialized. Stand alones are much quieter as well(particularly for me having the original phat PS3).

PS3 is the easiest to update from what I've found. It also seems faster on boot. I also find the DLNA features of the PS3 to be much much better than the stand alone players, but overall blu-ray picture quality is better with a stand alone, particularly with older lower quality Blu-ray transfers.

I do find the PS3 blu-ray picture quality to be quite good either way though, and you have to really be looking for the differences to see them.

I really have to say that although I actually own a dedicated bluray player I rarely use it. My PS3 is just more convenient. I also own a launch model 60GB so it has all the extra media card slots, which really come in handy. It's still the best device in my home for sharing media with my family and friends.

I'm actually in the same boat. I have a rather nice stand alone Blu-Ray player, but still use the PS3 more because it's other media features are much more fleshed out. It's media streaming features are easy to use, and quite robust, whereas the streaming features on the stand alone are pretty rudimentary. Funny thing is that the stand alone is a Sony which uses a interface not unlike the XMB, it just kind of sucks. Anyhow, I typically just throw in a blu-ray in the PS3 since the receiver is already switched to it more often than not. Also my Blu-ray doesn't seem to switch through HDMI consistently.

The PS3 is a solid Blu-Ray player, and if one is looking for a game machine that plays blu-rays, the PS3 is a great choice. But you can get great quality on a $70-80 stand-alone nowadays.

i have already given up on ps4 and bluray of any kind. i bought an external samsung 3d bluray player for the pc and with anydvd i also got rid of any worldwide regioncode-hassle. i am lucky. i do not need my console to do things a console does not have to do.

Yeah so Microsoft forced sony into 1 thing not like Sony made xbox do a complete 180 on their entire initial launch plans not to mention now cut the price and remove kinect do me a favour, this is why we love console wars because it pushes all companies involved to up their game, as for ps4 being behind, what!? Microsoft haven't even confirmed a date yet just days august considering the last xbox update only just went up and Sony have said next week think Sony will get 3D up and running first but seriously it's gonna be a matter of days bothered I haven't bought my new games console to watch 3d films it's great that it's an option but 3d is poor, great novelty but to sit and play a whole game in 3d no tah. If I wanted real life I'd use the front door as it happens I'm just here for a laugh and to play good games on great consoles.

3D support don't do anything for MS or Sony....I say strip both systems down to nothing but a Gaming Beast!!!! It was nice back in the day when a system could only play n handle a Game... Maybe just away to contact n chat with your friends, the rest remove..if I want to watch TV, Youtube, n ect..I would just build a PC...go back to the old days, I still use a Flip Phone,
