The Playstation 4 Could Bring 3D Gaming To The Mainstream Market

Sony may have failed to make 3D work with the PS3, but 3D gaming with the PS4 has fixed everything that was wrong with 3D on the PS3.

PS4 to bring back 3D... hmm... I'm not convinced.

Games like Trine will still support it, sure. But I doubt Sony will push 3D or market it in any meaningful way. They are putting their resources into Project Morpheus at the moment and also into Playstation Now. That's going to be their big push in the next 12-24 months.

I think 3D on Playstation platforms will go the way of the Playstation Move - as just a marketing gimmick used as an alleged benefit over the competition, without adding any real value to the console.

Neonridr3573d ago

well Sony has the biggest reason to push 3D. Namely because they have a whole range of Television sets that support it.

I have a Sony 3D TV and rather enjoyed playing some games in 3D. Black Ops was actually quite good on the 360 and had a pretty cool effect. Unfortunately for most of the games that supported 3D on the 360 and PS3, the resolutions of the games were already quite low. When you enable 3D mode, the graphics took an even further hit. Images became muddied and textures looked quite poor.

Trine 2 looked stunning in 3D and the new hardware can really show off a much better 3D effect.

I am not ready to give up on it quite yet.

JoGam3573d ago

Sony missed an opportunity for 3d with the game Entwined. I think that would have been a no brainer.

rambi803573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

yeah, the graphical compromise to enable 3d on the ps3 was not worth it for most games. AC3 looked terrible.

Puppeteer looked great but the devs said that they had to focus on special techniques to keep the visuals up to par.

3d is great when effort is put into making it work right.

GiggMan3573d ago

I also enjoyed 3D on PS3 and I don't think it "failed". Lots of people just didn't give it a chance.

Most people who knocked 3D (notice how I say most) are people who hadn't really tried it much. Let's be honest, lots of people still have 720p or less TVs. I'll admit some people, like my son, legitimately have a problem with 3D. The majority however, are just being vocal just to be vocal.

Games like Motostorm Apocalypse, Killzone 3, Uncharted 3 etc. were awesome in 3D. Even if just for one play through.

opoikl3573d ago

@Giggman

Killzone 3 together with Resistance 3 are actually the only two 3D games that I couldn't finish due to the very noticeable performance hit in both resolution and framerate. Especially KZ3 looked like it was going to annihilate my PS3 judging from the blurriness on screen. But then again, I finished those campaigns multiple times before I got a 3D tv, so perhaps I already got used to the image quality in 2D.

ATM I'm doing my first playthough of Crysis 3 in 3D and after messing around a bit with my tv's 3D settings, the picture is actually really smooth and easy on the eyes, without diluting the depth of 3D.

My top 5 3D games:
Halo:CE Anniversary
Puppeteer
Uncharted 3
Trine 2
Crysis 2-3

GiggMan3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

@Opoikl

Try MS Apocalypse if you get the opportunity. Racing games and third person shooters really shine in 3D.

Tomb Raider on PC is probably my all time favorite game in 3D.

I REALLY hope that No Man's Sky has 3D. It would be fantastic to have VR head tracking just to look around the cockpit of your ship but even if it's just 3D it's completely okay. It's mainly about exploration and the beauty of it and having a more immersive way to view things would be an even better experience. Just about every space game may be in a black void yet it's beautiful just to look at everything.

tbone5673573d ago

Sony already failed trying to bring 3d. Their effort was a total waste of time time. Even their playstation 3d tv were failures, didn't sell and had to go on fire sales.

guitarded773572d ago

It really helps if they offer the game in 3D mode. Sony hasn't been doing so like a couple of years back. I have two 3D monitors, but rarely play in 3D unless I just want something different. But if more games were being made with the option, I'd be interested on PS4.

PS Move still has a chance for it to be "revitalized"...By a long shot though...it depends on the success of Project Morpheus

ArchangelMike3573d ago

Exactly, Sony will really need to position PSMove as being integral to the VR experience. But that's not really PSMove, as much as it is Project Morpheus.

Ma1nframe3573d ago

Move? Move...that crap is D E A D!!!
thank god!

pwnsause_returns3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

Not really...You can tell sony built this thing with a wild prediction for the future in mind. It may be "dead" now...but it can re revived again, due to Morpheus...if Morpheus becomes a hit, what makes you think move won't be..

In the future,VR will not only be used with a regular controller, but it will be used with one obvious case, arms.... What's a better candidate for VRS use of arms right now on a play station platform??? Move...

I'm fact, isn't oculus also experimenting with motion controls that are actually attached to your arms in order to augment VR? Pretty much wearing gloves that detect hand and finger movement. (Aka power glove on crack)

It's true motion controls made us vomit cause it was a casual fest...VR though is completely different...if done right, lots of hardcore games can be made for it properly...

3d gaming was just a step of the ladder to get to VR in my opinion...

sinspirit3573d ago

I love Move. I just hate the no analog on the wand controller. I think a slider stick like 3DS would work nicely. I just hate aiming at the sides of the screen just to turn.

It might be unlikely at the moment, but not impossible. Sony have a financial reason to push 3D gaming. In the past the PS3 delivered an average experience with the exception of a few good 3D games. Trine 2 on the other hand is by far the best piece of 3D media i have come across and if this can be replicated with other games I dont see why popularity wont catch on. The 3D experience from Trine 2 was brilliant, I want more!

SteamPowered3573d ago

I would imagine doubling the image to produce 2 images would be quite taxing on the PS4. Im not sure what resolution would be in the end.

zerog3573d ago

Ever heard of split screen multiplayer? Consoles have been doing double images for a long time.

Volkama3573d ago

PC gaming, if you don't already. You can play pretty much everything in 3D, in any quality your hardware is able to push.

SteamPowered3573d ago

I have a feeling Legion does a bit of PC gaming.

WeAreLegion3573d ago

SteamPowered is correct. I game on PC quite a bit. I already play many of my games in 3D. However, it would be nice to see full 3D support on console titles, as well as titles developed with 3D in mind.

NerdBurglars3573d ago

id love to have the money to be able to build a pc that could easily handle 3d gaming.

sinspirit3573d ago

When I first got into MineCraft, and figured out it had the red/cyan 3D mode, I had no 3D glasses for that, so I cut basic glasses out of plastic that something came packaged in and I colored one lens red, and one lens blue. It did not work at all.. Lol. But, I guess it was fun to try and rig something out of boredom.

Can't wait to use one of these headsets for the first time.

wsoutlaw873573d ago

@sinspirit lol ya thats not how they work.

Immorals3573d ago

Until there is a cheap, accessible way to use 3d on a large screen WITHOUT glasses, 3d is never gonna be mainstream. I have a 3d TV, it was cool for a week or two, and now it's just a feature that never gets used.

sinspirit3573d ago

If that were true then it wouldn't even be on the market. And, not being "mainstream" isn't the term to describe something as unsuccessful. Just because something isn't as popular doesn't mean it isn't popular at all.

Immorals3573d ago

It's failed, like it has every other time.

How many films are coming out in 3d? How many games? Why do you think both MS and Sony didn't prioritise having it in their new consoles? The market isn't there.

sinspirit3573d ago

@Immorals

A lot of movies are doing 3D and they are very successful. It isn't something every movie production can do without a huge budget, so it isn't something the common movie does. It's not because 3D isn't successful. It's because it's expensive, not just for consumers, but for producers.

3D games weren't prioritized because it takes a lot of tricks and experience to get a game to be good looking while pushing 3D. Now that hardware is stronger and 3D is cheaper and adds head tracking functionality it gives developers more freedom and room to actually incorporate 3D into their games.

Sony didn't prioritize it because they were planning for 3D games on Morpheus, which isn't the same as 3D on a 3DTV. You don't consider millions and millions as well as pushing a product release and public demos of Morpheus as prioritizing? You must have completely missed all the positive Morpheus reception, as well as the even more tremendous reception of Occulus, at least before FB acquired it.

These headsets don't have the same display ratio on the images produced as a 3DTV. What displays on the screen uses one half of the screen for each eye to show each eye its own image. Two different ratios that don't work on either for a proper 3D image.

wsoutlaw873573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

I love how people whine about the stupid glasses but then are excited for morphius. Do they know VR requires a helmet with screens in front of your face. Plus they are in... 3D

KinjoTakemura3573d ago

Sony won't be pushing 3D on the PS4 when they're in the process of developing virtual reality. I would love to see games like Infamous support 3D, but I doubt it will ever happen.

Volkama3573d ago

There is a big overlap in VR and 3d, so in a sense VR makes it more likely they will both with other stereo displays.

Ron_Danger3573d ago

Not to make you jealous, but my 47" 240 hrz LG Cinema Google Tv can turn any signal into a 3D picture (very accurately might I add) and Infamous:SS looks awesome in 3D. And since the 3D processing is done by the TV, there's no loss in frame rate, however, and this is with all passive 3D, there is a slight resolution dip but it's not as bad as the PS3 res drop in 3D.

KinjoTakemura3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

I have a 42" LG TV capable of passive 3D too. No jealousy here. lol

Passive 3D is great, but it's not quite the same as active content.

Yes my HDTV converts standard images to 3D

2D to 3D capable.

WeedyOne3573d ago

My samsung tv can convert any 2d source to 3d as well. Red Dead Redemption was a great game in converted 3d!

Ron_Danger3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

I was referring to playing I:SS in 3D. Not all passive set can convert a non-3D signal to 3D. If yours can, I highly recommend checking out Infamous in 3D.

Neonridr3573d ago

Active may not reduce image quality like passive does because the glasses actively block out each eye in rapid succession. That being said, Passive is a heck of a lot easier on the eyes. The constant rapid flickering (even though it's not really noticeable) can give you eye fatigue quicker than the passive glasses. Plus they have a little bit more weight to them (although the newer active glasses are much lighter).

I have a 55" Sony 240Hz 3D TV. It has a Simulate 3D Mode as well which can take a 2D signal and convert it. I have fiddled with it once or twice, it works to a certain degree, but obviously not as well as a true 3D source.

Days Gone, 5 Years Later

Such a good game to me. Crazy how different peoples opinions can get.

Crows901h ago(Edited 1h ago)

For me it wasn't that surprising. There was some bad press before. There's also the matter and element of a person's disposition when trying out a certain game. Sometimes you're just not really into the type of game that you're playing so you put it down because you don't like it. Not necessarily because it's a bad game but because you're just not up for something like this. Reviewers have a tough because no matter what they feel like playing they've got to play what's releasing.

I have many times gone back to games that I put down only to thoroughly enjoy them the second time around because either there wasn't another exciting game coming out around the same time or I just had no other games to play and haven't played that type of game in a while. I'm not the type of person that can just play a souls game through all this iterations one after the other without getting burnt out on the formula.

In my opinion this game was great from the start. Some bugs here and there but nothing worse than the most AAA releases during the same time after and before. All I did was wait one week and I had a phenomenal time with the game. No other zombie survival game comes close to how I thoroughly enjoyed this one

-Foxtrot23m ago(Edited 21m ago)

Yeah I thought it was pretty decent, it had its flaws but for their first big console single player open world game it's a solid 8/10.

I have never seen an AAA "zombie" game feature as many enemies as the horde sections did, you really had to think about your surroundings and plan carefully.

I feel journalists had an issue with this game from the moment it was announced, they really didn't like the Biker characters and the overall Biker gang theme. If they were anything else I feel it would have had a better chance or at least they'd overlook some of the flaws like they do for certain other open world games. They don't mind waiting weeks or months for a patch knowing its coming but a game that has it Day 1 it's suddenly a big no no? Yeah this was one of those moments that showed you how they cherry pick who to suddenly decide to go harsh on when they want to.

mkis00716m ago

Ill never forget the reviewer who tried to claim the "ride me like you ride your bike" line was anything but a joke...they (sarah and deacon) explicitly call it a joke and the reviewer still misinformed the reader about it as if it was a literal thing.

Leeroyw1h ago

Second act of that game far surpassed the first. Which is why people felt it didn't live up to the hype of the trailers. Personally I loved it. But it was a slog to get your bike and weapons up to skill.

Inverno1h ago

Was gonna post a brick wall of text but I'll keep it short. Pardon my French but f**k the media for the hate they gave this game. If you have a PC to play it on you can get it as low as 10 bucks, and if you have a PS then it's a no brainer. Totally worth a play.

phatak1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I don't even comment here often but had to for this game, I still stand by my opinion that this was one of the top 10 games of the ps4 generation, I preferred days gone over god of war, horizon and last of us 2, the launch version was definitely piss poor and that messed up the reviews for this game, honestly some games deserve a re-review or post patch review as the metacritic score stays forever but the reality is its not even the same game anymore, the ps5 patch is amazing and the pc version which I play on nowadays is one of the best looking games ever, complete shame that we wont get a sequel, god of war got one, horizon got one, last of us got one, spider man got one, ghosts of tshushima about to get one but this game wont get one, sucks to be honest.

Ps3/360 era had some hidden underated games for me it was shadows of the damned, alice madness returns that deserved more sales and a sequel/ higher scores, and similarly for the ps4 era it was days gone, and dying light 1 that deserved much more love, dying light atleast got a sequel, everyone needs to play this game once and judge for themselves, for me its officially the most underrated game of the ps4 era, go play it if you haven't.

Awesome game. Just bought it for my laptop last week
