Developer Threatens to Blackball Media Outlets That Give Negative Reviews

In a time when cries for ethics among video game media outlets are rampant, it's disappointing to see a developer make threats for dishonest scores.

Developers have been doing this for years prior unfortunately because they know that early reviewers usually makes more revenue regardless of quality. For what it's worth, I'll always support an honest review regardless of time............

Utalkin2me2657d ago (Edited 2657d ago )

That is true. And also they have given reviewers incentives to review the game decent too.

Also if devs are going to take this path then all games should have demos of the final product before launch.

MVGeneral2657d ago

Yeah your right, give us demos at least. Games are now $70-$80 (here in canada) that's not cheap. So why should I gamble on a game from a fairly unknown developer or studio?
If I'm going to invest in a new game I need to know it's good. Or I'll just wait till people's opinions come out about it.

This does not include studios or franchises with good rep, I always buy their games regardless of review scores (naughty dog, santa monica studios, bethesda, mass effect, gta, Zelda and etc.)

Bimkoblerutso2657d ago

The problem being that...there is literally only one person that knows whether or not a review is "honest" and that is the person that reviewed it.

Corrupt reviewers are only one half of the issue with media reviews. We the gamers have a tendency to assume that a review is "honest" simply when we agree with it or it plays into our expectations. If we all stopped using reviews as a gauge for the quality of a game, and started reading them purely for their subjective perspective (as it should be), then none of this would be an issue.

Its sad and unethical. People would be surprised by the shady politics and how some of those troll reviews or high praising reviews are coerced, a deal under the table or paid for. Remember metacritics scores mean tons for a company and the games developed for them. Only ignorants believe that gaming isn't tainted by these tactics like every other medium.

That's why I stick with only a few reviewers. Ganetrailers bka Easy Allies usually keep it sincere or at least close to my tastes. Reviewing isnt perfect either as much of it is subjective.

game4funz2657d ago (Edited 2657d ago )

There are areas in a review that are subjective but also many that aren't.

Problem is that the areas that aren't subjective are not being reviewed anymore.

Reviews are more opinion heavy now then ever before.
Glitches and bugs weren't forgiven as much before as they are now for instance. Art direction has been reduced to simply eye candy in many reviews hence the constant graphical fidelity concentration in many triple A.

Musuc and voice acting is now been diminished to simply opinions on if dialogue is cliche or if it makes sense to the reviewer.
A cliche narrative gets points taken off because the reviewer thinks it's cliche... Regardless of whether the story is good or not.

Way too many opinions in reviews these days. Why? Because it's easier to have an unexperienced/uneducated opinion then to actually study and be balls deep in the medium you're critiquing.

Precisely!

Yes games with no campaign got thrashed in the past but others commended with rave reviews smh. I remember Starhawk got thrashed for it but fast forward and other games got passes even games like overwatch commended. Too much hypocrisy and yes certain reviewers not sticking to the rating criteria and flip flopping.

Let's get this straight IDC if an mp only game gets a high review. What bothers me is using the fact that a game doesn't have a campaign as a negative point arbitrarily depending in the game or company.

IamTylerDurden12657d ago

Metacritic is not necessarily an accurate representation of a games reception. They hand pick which reviews to use in order to achieve the score they want. However, Metacritic is almost all we got, so it's a necessary evil atm.

Fishy Fingers2657d ago

It's certainly a grey area I can understand from both sides. In this day and age anyone with a keyboard and an internet connection can be a 'reviewer'.

So while review conclusions are of course subjective and purely based on opinions that makes them easy to hide behind the results when you may in fact have an 'agenda' for whatever reason.

But this goes both ways, it's bad enough to see gamers bitch and boycott sites purely because they didn't like X game getting Y score. But we have to appreciate these reviews can genuinely effect these guys lives and futures.

If I were a dev, I'd limit the number of review copies I issue to the reputable news outlets. Of course, then do you expect those 'shunned' sites to be honest when they review at a later date? It's tough.

C-H-E-F2657d ago

The thing about it is, if you don't want the game to be reviewed early. Then don't send people FREE copies of your game to review it. Eff an embargo, just don't give them the game. If they get the game through illegal means then hey tighten up on your next iteration release. If you make a quality product why would you care if the game is reviewed early or not? Early reviews are most of the time the best reviews because the person is so hyped about it that they give insight on all of the areas the game fell short yet they speak on where the game shines. Also, the review score is normally more forgiving than an embargo review and or a late review. Late reviews are the worst because these are outlets that didn't get the game release day and now have to write a review that people will click on hence bad scores and or catchy insults regarding mechanics/graphics etc.

At the end of the day make a quality product and people won't say many bad things about it, stick to your game concept you told the people the game was about, don't lie about the gameplay or graphics, don't lie about what the game is about or is supposed to do and don't lie about the audience the game is intended for. People that buy the game day one like all of the lies told about the game for you to sell it when they buy it and find out it's full of lies guess what they talk negatively about the product and warn people to run away from it. it's not that difficult to understand.

I dont even care about the reviewers now days.. Except for some most are shady and biased.. If i like a certain game and its gameplay i will simply go ahead an preorder it..

Wallstreet372657d ago (Edited 2657d ago )

That's how I feel. I go more with what my friends tell me and user reviews (I know many are troll reviews as well) from places such as neogaf and one or two trusted sites.

Just to give a few examples of how my tastes or some reviews are biased depending on the game....

Witcher 3 which in its right deserves high praise but I didn't like it at all.

The Order which received heavy criticism for good reason but I enjoyed it.

Starhawk got thrashed years ago for no campaign.

Overwatch gets commended and wins several goty awards having no campaign.

Drive Club thrashed for having broken online, campaign worked good since launch

Halo collection had broken online far longer than DC and still has issues

Also campaign had many technical issues. Rates good and gets a free pass lol

Ceaser98573612657d ago (Edited 2657d ago )

For witcher 3 i listened to my friend becoz i never played a RPG game before.. and WOW!! Witcher 3 was my #1 game in 2015.. Loved everything about it ..

and i agree with you, Order 1886 was receiving hate before release date but i enjoyed it and here's hoping we get a sequel soon... Galahad deserves a place in the Playstation community .

IamTylerDurden12657d ago

Starhawk had a campaign, but it was a tutorial of sorts. Starhawk was excellent.

Driveclub should have been re-reviewed by every respectable site. DC today is a vastly superior game to the one that launched in October of 2014. It didn't even have weather or functioning servers at launch, but today Driveclub is arguably the best closed circuit racer in years. The Driveclub Bikes expansion is a blast as well.

The Order was unfairly maligned. It gets criticised for what it's not, but it doesn't receive nearly enough recognition for what it does well. Visuals, voices acting, writing, art direction, sound design, and narrative are all fantastic. Imo, the combat and the creative weapons were quite enjoyable. The arc lightning gun was so fun to use and pop ppl's heads and limbs with electric bolts. The secondary fire on the air rifle was extremely well implemented and so fun to blow close range foes back, into shooting range and then gun them down. The Thermite gun was also exceptionally creative and a joy to use. Painting a cluster of enemies with thermite and then shooting the flare shot and watching them incinerate. Also, anyone who calls the White Chapel lycan fight a simple "qte" is quite delusional.

yup, worked for me a few hours ago

This update on PC kills mods, they still didn't improve or fix the draw calls and if you have an RTX card the game still crashes unless you turn off debris.
So if you mod the game it now looks worse, plays worse, all of your saves are broken and the game breaking bugs are still present.

Good work detective

Bethesda strikes again, always thought their games were a tad boring anyway, this was even before Microsoft brought them. Used to quake 3 team arena to death, on an old pc, at the time it was new, fresh, fast paced and innovative, their games these days, are none-of-the-above
