Halo 5: Guardians Is The Worst Selling Mainline Halo In Japan, Sales Compared To Past Halo Games

Khurram Imtiaz writes: "Halo 5: Guardians was released on Xbox One in Japan last week and we have finally received the result of the total sales of the game in its debut week. As expected, the game was the worst selling mainline Halo game since the series first made its debut on Xbox platform. However, Halo was definitely a popular enough IP in the past, that managed to sell reasonable numbers and also helped in selling Xbox hardware."

Well Halo is not really popular in Japan

TwoForce3107d ago (Edited 3107d ago )

Not just that, compare previous Halo games on Metacritic and sales. You can see why. 86 is great score, but the worst rank of Halo series. I remember when Halo series made by Bungie, it sales like a hotcake back then.

TwoForce3107d ago

All the disargree, i will say this Halo 5 is still a great game and it sold very well.

3107d ago
Game4Next3106d ago

Hideo Kojima could direct a Halo Game. Phil Spencer pretty please. :D

Blaze9293107d ago

i really don't understand the point of this article...

SynestheticRoar3107d ago

Neither is the xbox one popular in japan.

DivoJones3107d ago

And that's a key reason why it's selling lower than the rest. Japan has essentially rejected/passed on the Xbox One, so of course a game exclusive to the console they don't want would sell the worst of all the Halo entries.

Docknoss3106d ago

Consoles aren't popular in Japan, at least compared to previous gens

3107d ago
lxeasy3107d ago

"The hardware sales of Xbox One also stand at a paltry 57,863 consoles sold during the launch of Halo 5: Guardians in Japan. For comparison, Xbox 360 had sold 415,491 units before the launch of Halo 3."

What's the point of this article again...

3-4-53106d ago

Add gearnuke to the Clickbait site list.

babadivad3106d ago

And yet somehow, this non-story made the front page of n4g. Hmmmm.

TFJWM3107d ago

The thing is Halo 5 could be the worst selling halo in every territory and that other article could still correct...

Eonjay3107d ago

Thats the nature of spin though. Why would they ever shine a light on the negative aspects of their story. Answer: they wouldn't. Nor should they be expected to. There are ALWAYS two sides to every story.

Kingthrash3603107d ago

Of this article wasn't so spun it would be a good example. ...but that article includes all things halo...like hardware and controllers and dolls and stuff...it dosent say how many actual games sold. If you think about it the xbox one dosent have the install base to sell more than halo 3 or 4.. just saying. ..that title on that article should have a huge "*" next to it

Kribwalker3107d ago

It also released to the smallest Xbox install base in Japan at less then 60,000 consoles, so more then 10% of Xbox owners in Japan bought it. That's a pretty solid attach rate

Automatic793107d ago (Edited 3107d ago )

These no name websites working there way into N4g to slander Xbox One and Halo have been coming in like a conveyor belt. Where are all the positive articles I see on internet and don't make it into N4g. Lol Halo is doing fine one of the best games to come out this holiday season.

Paytaa3107d ago

Be careful, I pointed this out when Halo 5 reviews were rolling through and lost 2 bubbles because of it for "trolling".

OT: I'm surprised it even sold that much in Japan. Halo has always been a US/UK thing primarily.

TheCommentator3107d ago

The writer also said that Halo 4 and MCC tarnished the franchise but Halo 5 launched into a relatively small global install base compared to the others. The sales also have to do with MS having not earned back all the respect the XB1 lost at launch, and not moving as many new consoles as a result.

Meninblack73107d ago

Halo 2 and 3 had similiar install base when they launched - sold better than Halo 5

TheCommentator3107d ago

You may be right, Meninblack. It was too time consuming to find all the data, TBH, so I just went off of memory. Maybe someone can tell me:

What percentage of Xbox owners bought Halo 2 at launch?
What percentage of 360 owners bought Halo 3 at launch?
What percentage of XB1 owners bought Halo 5 (physical and digital) at launch?

Logically, I think it's safe to say that Halo 2 would be highest in percentage because it piggybacked off the success of Halo, and also outsold GTA by a wide margin. In contrast, it tarnished Halo's rep with the Arbiter(who was great, IMO). I assume Halo 3 wasn't as successful as 2 because of the Arbiter making fans angry. That leaves 5, which as far as I know, we don't have all the data for yet.

Fro_xoxo3107d ago

Halo doesn't need Japan to break records ^_^.

xoxo

MasterCornholio3107d ago (Edited 3107d ago )

Which records did it break though?

P.S I'm talking about Halo 5 in case your wondering.

@Danzo

OK I just saw the article. Thank you

S2Killinit3107d ago

It seems MS's statement that it broke records was adding up hardware sales, which might be why they didnt announce actual units sold and instead mentioned sales in dollars. You have to read between the lines.

Tsunade3107d ago

Exactly. It only needs to mix sales of the game with all the hardware and a good PR spin.

S2Killinit3107d ago

yup, that seems to be what they are doing, why else would they not tell us the number of units sold instead of a dollar amount?

phantomxll3107d ago

And People always say MS likes to spins things... Xbox barely sells in Japan sooooo...

Master Chief Became More Than A Machine In 343's Halo

In Halo 4, 5, and Infinite, Master Chief became a more nuanced, human character.

In spite of the Halo series’ struggles, 343 deserves praise for adding nuance and characterisation to the ever-beating heart of Halo - The Master Chief. Playing through Infinite, it's abundantly clear that the events of the current and previous trilogies have irrevocably changed the iconic hero. He’s no longer the ‘blank slate’ that was previously presented by Bungie. He’s a fatigued, damaged and fallible protagonist, and one who is meandering through currents of grief, while reveling in his newfound agency. Giving the Chief a compelling and meaningful voice was no small feat, and 343 should be proud of that victory.

This article completely misses part of the appeal of the original iteration of character in the original game trilogy. It was the Chief and Cortana vs an entire alien collective. The blank slate Bungie displayed in their games was genius, he was an mysterious hero a wide audience could identify with because he wasn't as clearly defined as most characters.

The books added a lot of lore and backstory but most Halo players just want a fun game with exposition that doesn't get in the way of gameplay, it's why the Cortana level in Halo 3 was derided.

Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty.

BandarHub418d ago

A lot of people give the 343 version of Master Chief a lot of slack.
But Fundamentally he is still the same character, he just has a couple more dialogues. He has not changed in terms of attitude.
"Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty."
And that's what he has done at the end of the day, he did his duty. Watch his partner die, and was ready to destroy the weapon in Halo infinite....he is still the same soilder that everyone remembers

Halo Infintes one was a nice balance between both.

slate91418d ago

Chief and the halo franchise became a joke under 343

Sciurus_vulgaris418d ago

The 343i Master Chief has is based on the books. However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion.

Obscure_Observer418d ago

"However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion."

Which is awesome! I love how Master Chief become more John and less soldier.

I mean, the deal is alright… Unfortunately for me the Serious S doesn’t have a disk drive and unfortunately for Gamestop a lot of those games are on or have been on Gamepass/PSNow.

Sgt_Slaughter660d ago

Given the nature of backwards compatibility on new systems, this is a great sale in case you missed out on some gems from last gen.

Mandingo2020660d ago

Most of the games on Xbox are on game pass. The Switch games in this sale are trash c'mon farming simulator that's laughable. The PS4 games should be cheaper. I can't wait for the GameStop going out of business liquidation sale.

neutralgamer1992659d ago

Seriously man I don't get the hate on GS and I guess you want even less options and give more control to the publishers

And you want thousands of people to lose their jobs because you don't like a company. One thing I have noticed is how most who hate on GS haven't shopped at the actual stores in years. Many who hate on GS have also done so listening to others negative stories or experiences. People on YT want clicks and hating on GS is the cool thing

SurgicalMenace659d ago

It's not people's hate that would lose people's jobs, it's the shady business practices of the company. So what you're saying is that because people work there individuals should just support what they don't want to? Sound advice; Hitler too had supporters, employees, and advocates but people go around hating him too. They only hate because of other people's bad stories or experiences; they only spoke bad about him because they wanted attention. It's been decades; lets give his way another go. With your logic anything could be made to sound good.🤷🏾‍♂️

neutralgamer1992659d ago

SurgicalMenace

Seriously you used Hitler as an example to say company has shady practices

You don't have to shop at GS there are many other retailers. I shop there and vast majority of my experiences have been positive and most of the employees are super nice

SurgicalMenace659d ago

Just having some fun, bro.🤣🤣

Mandingo2020658d ago

There are other places to work besides GS. Plus, their benefits are trash so why not work somewhere else?

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 658d ago
REDGUM659d ago

And none of those game you speak of you actually own as they are digital not physical & would cost more than $20 as the subscription costs more than that.

Mandingo2020658d ago (Edited 658d ago )

You know you can get game pass ultimate codes for the low on cdkeys or g2a right? You don't need to have a subscription 😂. GS is trash and I'd rather support the mom and pop game store here instead.

BlackTar187659d ago

Why are you people so full of hate? GameStop gives people jobs and provides a physical appearance to see things in the flesh and not just some soulless online experience.

Mandingo2020658d ago

You can get physical at mom and pop game stores plus you can get it online. GS is trash

neutralgamer1992658d ago

Because Mom and Pop shops cost two to three times more for the same product Angie the answer

BlackTar187658d ago (Edited 658d ago )

Mom and pop stores cost more and have even harder time competing against the internet. Also lie to me and tell you have a couple mom and pop stores near you selling games then lie and tell me you shop there.

IanTH659d ago

These sales, while potentially great, really struggle to be valuable given you can't easily parse what games are in stock. You can't just say "only show what is online & what are in my nearby stores". Probably 60-75% of these games in these massive lists are out of stock for shipping, and out of stock locally. It makes it a chore to find anything you'd want, much less 4 of them, much less enough if you wanted to get to a free shipping tier. It's a bummer.

Halo CE over Halo Infinite anyday

Not to mention the impact it had at the time

Flawlessmic729d ago

Halo 3 at the top is correct the only thing id change is swap infinite and halo ce around.

AuraAbjure729d ago

Halo 4 best campaign and multiplayer. Halo 3 best story.

ChubbyBlade728d ago

Are you trying to give people cancer?

AuraAbjure728d ago (Edited 728d ago )

Halo 4 has the hottest Cortana too which explains why the MC is the hardest in that campaign and why H4's multiplayer is the illest. Chief ain't afraid to take on teleporting enemies that can one hit melee kill.
