Price isn't the only thing keeping XBO behind PS4, but it is one of the things as "proven" last gen. Whenever 360 and PS3 were $50 or less apart PS3 began taking a noticeable lead over 360 in Worldwide sales, but when both consoles were $100 apart 360 took that lead away from them, and balanced things out.

PS simply has a bigger market to cater to with Continental North America, Continental Europe, Japan, and RoW all being areas PS does very good in.

Xbox unfortunately only has Continental NA, some regions in EU, and some regions in RoW to compete in, and things don't balance out in their favor unless there is a big price difference between the 2 consoles like there was last generations with the 360's $299 / $399 price vs. PS3's $499 / $599 price.

This is a perfect example proving price helps.

That being said I agree with you regarding PS4 vs XBO. Last gen 360 has $100 price difference, 3rd party priority, and NA market completely in it's favor.

This generation XBO has none of those things going for it, and as the $50 price difference proved it didn't help with the PS3 vs 360, it most certainly won't help with the PS4 vs XBO with those other 2 things missing.

It would really help for the holiday season considering the line-up they have for 360 fans to jump on board, but starting January of 2016 sales will drop off quickly and only pick up when a big exclusive launches like Quantum Break, maybe Crackdown, and Gears 4. It would be like last year where they won NPD for the holiday, lost overall global sales, and sales dropped significantly the following first half of the year. An immediate improvement at the cost of long term.

Or they can bank on their holiday line-up and have a price drop spring 2016 to $299 to maximize profits, and give their New IP's a better chance to sale like Quantum Break. Which is more likely considering they have all the bundles already priced and announced, the line-up is going to sell millions regardless, and they can keep the momentum going with a Spring price drop.

Maybe the price does help a little in NA, WW it's completely another story.

I don't remember the x360 beating up the ps3 even with the price advantage but one year 2008. The ps3 was outperforming the x360 on a WW scale.

What helped the x360 is the year and half ahead start + the snow ball effect in NA.

To me PS is a much more stronger brand and the price plays too little role, at least WW.

For this holiday, as i see it, cutting the price for the xbone will deal more damage to the brand than help with sales.

Ms should keep the same price and relay on bundling more games and gift cards to add value to its console.

MS is more likely to sell their system on added value this holiday rather than drop the price again. They have a large number of bundles aimed at different console gamer markets, and it wouldn't be too hard for them to throw in another game with rebates to retail, as well as some Xbox Live service.

Of course, it wouldn't be too much for Sony to do the same thing. Something like Knack with a Lego game could be huge to pull in the casuals. A second game with the UC bundle could take the steam out of a MS bundle. and it goes on.

However, I think Sony is going to rely more on their COD and Star Wars partnership this holiday. I know they're multi-plat games, but all the advertising is going to be associated with Sony, and to the mainstream, that will have a much greater effect.

This holiday season is going to be very interesting.

I think that this is microsofts last stand when it comes to turning things around and gaining ground,there is no other game that they can put out that will be bigger than Halo 5.

The Wii u released its biggest games and nothing happened. Will the xbox one share the same fate?

The funny part of all this is that the xbox one is struggling to keep up and the biggest games for the PS4 have yet to release like God of war Uncharted Gran Turismo etc.

A ps4 price cut is crucial at this point as it will reduce MS's momentum with all their heavy hitters this holiday.

Now, add to that the fact that all those extra ps4 owners are potential PS VR customers down the line, increasing the new platform's chance out the gate.

Sony should follow that with a Ps4 slim announcement at $300(or less) at E3 2016 along with PS VR's release date, price and launch line up effectively turning the ps4 into an unstoppable train capable of breaking through any hurdle the competition throws at them.

I see MS winning October global sales by a small margin thanks to Halo, and winning NPD for November and December thanks to bundles and a holiday price drop.

I see Sony winning Global sales for September, November, and December.

After that like you said there's really nothing else left for MS to do to catch the PS4. Their biggest franchises will all be on XBO by the end of 2015 (whether sequel or remaster), and all games of them will have had sequels by the end of 2016, and unfortunately as good as Quantum Break, Crackdown, and Scalebound look I don't see them being nearly as successful as Halo, Forza, and Gears has been for MS. I suspect a price drop down to $299 in 2016, most likely early Spring to tie in with Quantum Break (would really help this game sell well), or an E3 announcement, and that will help, but I don't see anything else besides that, and really marketing XBO to the 360 audience.

This is not to say XBO is going to sell bad after 2015, I see it selling around 10m - 12m consoles annually which is right around what the 360 was during it's 3rd year, so it's going to do just fine, but in comparison to PS4 I don't see it ever having a chance at catching up.

I suspect XBO to be at 20m units by the end of this year, with an additional 10m - 12m units each of the following years until 2020, when new consoles should be scheduled to launch for both MS and Sony, unless one of them jumps the gun.

Also the Wii U's biggest game did do something. It helped them beat XBO sales for May and June 2014......that counts for something.

I'm just being VERY optimistic, because MS really needs this. PS4 has been averaging over 600k a month, while XBO has been around 300k. That means Halo 5 has 1 week to make up a minimum of 300k sales, and that's if Uncharted and other games does nothing to boost PS4 sales which is unlikely.

Plus MS really needs this, because if they can't win a single month out of the year globally with a sequel their biggest franchise, and PS4 not really having something of that caliber then forget 2016, it'll already be a wrap for this generation and PS4 will simply take off even more in 2016 (Uncharted is of that caliber, but a HD collection isn't as hype inducing as a full scale next-gen sequel).

So I'm only saying that because MS NEEDS it, do I think it's going to happen....unlikely, but there is a small chance it could.

Splatoon is consistently selling well....especially in Japan and Mario Maker has already passed a million in sales, so to bring up Wii-U and saying the software isn't helping is a lie. It may not be selling Wii-U's by the truck load....but it's at least keeping those dedicated gamers happy while still attracting new players everyday. People bring up software as Wii-U's major downfall (especially lack of third party games) but it's more then that. Honestly, Wii-U's major issue has been and continuously is its marketing (or dare I say, lack of marketing) because since day one, it's been non existent! The Wii-U's exposure to the mainstream never happened, casuals and core gamers were both confused with its mixed messaging, the name was horrible and most people thought the Gamepad was an add on for the original Wii. And the third party support at launch was atrocious....broken ports, sequels to series Wii owners never played or games coming later then other last gen console versions. A lot of things contributed to Wii-U's current situation. The Wii-U broke the 10 million mark and third parties still didn't return after saying at 7 million it needed a bigger install base to regain support.Xbone is at 13 million and that's with full third party support behind them,yet nobody stops supporting them! Funny thing is...the highest rated exclusives are on the Wii-U,so it's really not the lack of content!

I most certainly remember sales being discussed the entire time, and it was clearly known the Wii won last-gen sales wise, but most core gamers on here agreed that Wii was a casual console.

I also remember Xbox fanboys on here throwing out sells numbers left and right, that is until the PS3 began winning weekly and monthly sales, the it became all about global sales completely disregarding the fact that 360 launched a year early. But then PS3 caught 360's global sales and began passing it, and at that point sales didn't matter or only NPD since that was the region most of the fanboys lived.

So no, sells very well did matter all of last generation, just as they matter here. The difference is since Wii was winning sales it was not aiding core gaming since major 3rd party developers weren't going to build games based on the Wii and port up to PS360 since the hardware difference was too great, which is why 360 took that mantle early on, and eventually it was switched to PS3 late in the consoles lifecycle or at least 50/50.

Wii's lead did nothing for core games, but it did expand the console gaming audience in general (if only for that gen since those fickle people are now on mobile).

While speculation, it is likely that retailers already know what is coming. They would have been informed of a price drop to prepare for the ads they will have coming out in 2-3 weeks as they do need a lead time for it. If this is coming during Paris Game Week, then retailers will want to make that information available to the unwatchful types who will see it as a nice sale on a desirable item so they rush out to buy it. Sony rebates the retailers, everyone is happy.

It also gives enough time to establish the price of the PS4 before black Friday, which could see some retailers offering another discount...at no cost to Sony...or offer nice bundles to entice people who are teetering on the fence.

It's really no different than what MS did last year when they dropped the price of the X1.

I wouldn't use Ebay as any judge of anything. Ebay is a race to the bottom, and those items are selling at costs...if not below it to entice secondary sales. If a major retailer is selling on Ebay, they are paying no where near the fees that the regular sellers are, and they are getting the products directly from the manufacturer so they have the room to play with it. For the most part, major retailers on Ebay charge regular retail price, and any lower prices are at the discretion of their marketing department.

They wouldn't profit as much on the system, but now it's about firmly cementing their position to make money on subscriptions, auxiliary purchases, and software sales....which is where the real money is made anyways.

Which was exactly what Target did last year before the lower price Xbox One SKU hit the market. These sorts of rebate programs are usually sponsored by the company who makes the product as a way to eliminate excess stock in advance of a price drop. When you start seeing these sorts of rebate offers, you can be sure that a price drop is close behind.

While what you say is true, I don't believe that one retailer is an indicator of a price drop. However, given the time frame, it's likely coming. Whether retailers know this(they likely would if it's coming at PGW), or not can't be said for sure. Amazon had a $50 gift card promotion on X1's for a few weeks a bit ago, but I wouldn't take that as MS doing a price drop this year. Sometimes retailers do want to move out stock to buy more stock, and given the new bundles coming out, they may just wish to clear out inventory. For a $50 gift card, they're actually only losing maybe $25-40 with whatever merchandise is brought with it...likely a game or controller which they buy for around $45 or $43 respectively.

Many believed it was 10 million sold and written as such so was many people from twitter, Neogaf, and N4G. Only later on we found out it was most likely 10 million user tags with an update from Neogaf and after most of the comments were already posted. LoL, did you ever read that tweet?

Well it kind of is the same circumstance. In both situations people didnt click on the article and they interpreted the article wrong from the headline.

In this case it was many people assuming that the PS4 got a 50$ price drop when it was really only a retailer bundling a 50$ gift card with it.

In the other case it was people believing that the game sold 10 million when the tweet said that it had 10 million players.

Like i said before its an example of people misinterpreting an article wrong by just reading the headline.

We are all guilty of making that mistake but it really isn´t that big of a deal.

The Titanfall article, in the actual tweet that you would click on people were discussing sales and associating the 10 million with it. It was vague and misleading quote from the original tweet.

In this story the author takes a clip from Target and assumes it's a price drop and reports it that way. The actual ad from Target and the site tells you it's a $50 gift card. I don't know if the author intentionally left it out or missed it himself.

Seriously, dude? Do you not remember how the previous generation consoles debuted at $700 dollars with measly 20-40GB hard drives? $400 is a reasonable price for both the PS4 and XB1, and a price drop for either console is aces. Post price drop, you could buy two PS4s for the price of one OG PS3.

The PS3 debuted at $700, and that was back in 2006, so adjusted for inflation it's about $830 in today's money. A console significantly more powerful for half that price is beyond reasonable, especially since this one debuted with a much more numerous and higher-quality library. If anything, gaming today, with retailers constantly offering bundle deals, price drops and with game services offers (like PS Plus, Games With Gold, Steam sales, Humble Bundles and GOG.com) is cheaper than it's ever been.

Hell, I remember when my dad had to pay $100 to get me a cartridge of Zelda 2 back in the NES days. That's almost $220 in today's money, HALF THE CURRENT PRICE OF THE PS4.

The PS4 is nearing the 2-year mark, it's a perfect time for a price drop. Especially with how insane this 4th quarter's gonna be: Fallout 4, Uncharted Collection, Wasteland 2 DC, Tales of Zestiria, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Divinity: Original Sin, Battlefront, Black Ops 3, Bloodborne's DLC, Just Cause 3, Rainbow Six... Such a great time to be a gamer :)

How many price drop did the xbone go through? Yet the PS4 gap still increased. Halo 5 and a timed exclusive will not help the xbone. The gap will only increase once Sony officially drops the price of the PS4.

M$ is desperate so their doing whatever they can to try and catch the PS4. Price cuts, titanfall, forza 6, now halo 5. Pretty early to releases your top franchise games.

-Cloud computing: We have not yet seen a single game whose game experience was significantly enhanced by cloud computing. So far, it's just a buzz word.
-Havok: The purchase was just last week. It's too early to tell if it was a wise choice or not.
-Mojang: Microsoft's done nothing with it since the purchase.
-DX12: Again, too early to tell if the upgrade will significantly improve the games.
-Bigger exclusives: I'm not even gonna get into this one, because anyone with any objectivity knows that Sony has ALWAYS been the leader in exclusives. Nintendo may have more, but that's cause that's all they have. Sony has the biggest library of great exclusives supported by strong 3rd party presence.

I've got nothing against Microsoft, and with Phil Spencer at the helm they have improved exponentially, but they have made too many promises they haven't delivered on, and it's hurt their bottom line. Literally since before day 1, Sony's had the advantage and they've taken the right steps to keep that lead. I agree with Phil Spencer that the console wars are dumb, but the fact is that every customer Sony wins is a customer Microsoft loses, so they need to get their $#!+ together if they plan on equaling Sony's business.

3. bc. had it last gen with PS3, never used it except once just to see. Also PSNow is much more functional if you want to play older games than bc.
4. "bigger exclusives" seriously? why? because they are releasing their load during the holidays as a desperate move to gain attention. and market the heck out of it? They have less than half the exclusives as PS4 you know. Xbox hadn't release a single AAA since christmas of last year.
5. xbox and windows becoming one. As a console gamer you should be very worried about that.
6. 12 player chat. Not sure about this. I'm sure its great. I'm assuming this is something other than the party chat Playstation has?

what has Playstation done?

1. More than twice the exclusives. (that is A LOT of games) (most diverse)
2. Cross play
3. Share play
4. Remote play
5. PSNow. the best rental system. I get to choose from more than 500 games library, at my fingertips, and I get to play any of them for 5 hours for the same price it takes you to drive to a local store, where you look for an old game you want to then buy/rent and find out they don't have it.
6. background music (which xbone STILL doesn't have). I can play spotify in the background and listen to any song in my library while I play any game, as it is integrated to replace only the background music as if it was the game's own music.
7. better looking multiplatform games.
8. PSVR (my most anticipated; and probably the largest leap in the evolution of gaming since we went from 2d textures to 3d)
9. revival of Japanese gaming
10. allowing smaller developers to make their games without having to go through a big publisher. Resulting in a renaissance in Indie game development.
11. communities

I could go on, but I'll stop here. But I'll tell you my own personal favorite; PS4 not only has more games, they also have more than twice the exclusives in the pipeline.

That Uncharted Bundle has me rolling with envy, but I still can't buy a console just for 1 collection of games... I need exclusives, and honestly, the PS4 doesn't have much I'm interested in. (I'm sorry it's just my opinion)

Most multiplatform games I can get them on my Xbox One anyway, sure while the PS4 versions may be slightly graphically better, I enjoy the games regardless of the resolution. For now, my main console purchase will be selling my Advanced Warfare Xbox One for the Halo 5 console haha

According to the Target website it is a $50 gift card for the Last of Us and Destiny bundles. Companies do this all the time to get people into the store at a later date resulting in more sales (i.e. Games!!). This is NOT an official price cut.

Also a couple Xbox One bundles include a free game on the Target website.....not a price cut either.
