PlayStation Dreams Details from Media Molecule's Livestream

When Media Molecule started their PlayStation Dreams stream, we felt like we all were taking a tour of Willy Wonka and The Chocolate factory! It was such a fantastic way to start the stream by leaving us outside the studios front door. We started a short walk through around the Media Molecules studio.

Orbilator3143d ago

ill be there for sure, i have so many things I wanna try already. My mind is on fire with ideas,
I done a few personal levels in LBP but to be honest that wasnt what i was looking for, Dreams on the otherhand delivers (looks to any ways) what I am needing

visually it is very striking but is this going to be an actual game or just another extension of little big planet where they give you the tools to create your own?

MrSec843143d ago (Edited 3143d ago )

@Moldy: We can only guess right now, though Media Molecule have always included a core game in their titles, LBP 1 & 2, Tearaway on Vita and Unfolded on PS4 all had a game, so IMO it will very likely have a core adventure made by Media Molecule, that anyone can play through.

I can see MM making a universe of Dream Spaces, you get given a Mascot to travel through them, collecting new Characters, set-pieces and through that learn how to use the tools of the game.

LBP may have offered the player the tools to make 2D levels, with 3D assets and I think it's fair to say this could be several orders of magnitude an increase beyond that, because it's not just about creating levels.

Right now these are just guesses, so who knows for sure?
I think the real battle in creating this is just making the tools work like they want them too, actually making a game out of it seems like it could be very straightforward once that challenge has been met.

I think there will be a game for sure, that's just my opinion though.

The new Communities function on the PS4 opens up a lot of possibilities for collaborations and making new friends to share this stuff with.

It looks just insane, this is going to be the gift that keeps on giving, can't wait to see the kind of experiences we will get 2 to 3 years after it's released.

MrSec843143d ago (Edited 3143d ago )

Well said, have a bubble!

I can't wait to see what comes out of this. I think there has to be a core game in there, that Media Molecule are making to show people how it's done, I think that will be what part of what they show at Paris, I think Alex Evans said something about a character, but he quickly led the talk away from that.
For a game like this I would imagine that the Studio could have made a bunch of different characters to choose, to play through the game and potentially they could make new interconnected universes that they can add to their own core experience over time, with the external community playing off of that too.
I think maybe Dreams could be more of a platform, rather than a game you buy and there's only ever that one core experience.
This could be a game/experience that starts out with hundreds of hours of MM created content and that expands into an endlessly growing universe of experiences that encompasses anything people could think of.

The potential for people to manipulate existing assets already made in the game, make their own and create tonnes of unique content means the possibilities for what can be made with this will be nigh on endless.

It also sounds like Media Molecule are taking the communicated nature of this even more seriously than they did with Little Big Planet.
I'm really looking forward to their next presentation, I think they said they're doing another next week.

Dreams looks awesome, the more I see the more I want to know!!!!

Orbilator3143d ago

i agree too, its gonna be amazing few years with this

Orbilator3143d ago (Edited 3143d ago )

soz bad link

Orbilator3143d ago (Edited 3143d ago )

My mind is like this already :)

neocores3143d ago

0.0 i cant even wrap my head around it.... I cant wait....

MrSec843143d ago

It's certainly a lot to take in.
The way I think about it is like an all encompassing digital creation platform, though that doesn't seem to really do it justice.

The potential for this is massively mind blowing!
I'm hoping that Media Molecule launches the title with a core game, like an adventure experience, with a new mascot like Sackboy in LBP, Iota and Atoi in Tearaway/Unfoled, but maybe you have to travel through a universe of Dreams to collect more characters, set pieces and through doing that you learn the creation platform of the game/title/platform.

I can see that core experience being expanded by both Media Molecule and the community, both within Media Molecule's own boundaries and beyond them.

Really this does seem to have limitless potential and iteration on every part of it will constantly make it a richer and richer experience.
Dreams seems like something that could expand endlessly, change on a daily basis and start out as one thing, but end up as something well beyond the scope of what Media Molecule envisioned in the beginning of it's launch.

Even just calling it a game or boiling it down to Digital Creation Platform likely doesn't do it justice, I think this could very well feel like it's alive and growing all the time.
You leave the game one night and come back to find a mountain of new content to explore.

I can't wait, my mind is racing for this!!
Even if you don't want to create things yourself, just jumping into the game and experiencing the universe on offer will likely be phenomenal.

Amazing!!!

If there was one PC version that should have existed it’s Dreams

I’m super glad they will be going back to something more traditional gaming wise.

Cacabunga4d ago

I’m sure they’ll find something creative to implement like Tearaway on vita. What a gem 💎 that thing was!!!

Abear214d ago

My dream was DreamsVR and creating landscapes, characters, and sculptures using that amazing toolbox in vr, that would have been something imo.

Amplitude4d ago

It did but it came out as an update LONG after the game was essentially dead

P_Bomb4d ago

Dreams PC was the dream. Woulda given the game a much needed boost. Here’s hoping they follow it up well.

phoenixwing4d ago

If sony had any sense they'd be making a pc version pronto

mkis0074d ago

They probably ran into the same problem they did with the potential of last of us factions....the support needed was just too much to consider expanding to more platforms for a smallish studio.

Abnor_Mal4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I use to say this when the game was first releasing, many kept saying it would not be possible, something about the toolsets.

I said this was one game that needed to be on as many platforms as possible, including PC and Xbox just like how Minecraft is everywhere.

Goodguy014d ago

Creation tools just don't work on console very well. It's definitely more suited for PC, and it's very odd Sony decided not to port it over. Good MM is working on an actual game instead.

The only PlayStation dev I care about tbh.

Inverno14d ago

Dayum did I hit a nerve. Sorry for not liking most of this gens games coming from PS, not really doe.

Cacabunga14d ago

Hopefully doesn’t take them a complete gen to release it

TheColbertinator14d ago

Good. Something not boring, not one of those "make your own game" crap and also on Steam would be nice.

Stopac14d ago

I too like to look for things in the wrong places.

Dreams Dev Media Molecule Says Layoffs Impact Planned Community and Curation Support

IGN writes: "Media Molecule has said the layoffs at the Sony-owned studio have affected plans for ongoing community and curation support in Dreams."

Inverno49d ago

How self sustained can DREAM be when it's basically stuck on PS4? I don't think it's even gotten a PS5 upgrade. Ending support for what is essentially a game making engine is basically death. SONY did DREAMS dirty.
