Tomb Raider Going Back to Basics Makes It A Much Better Sell

Tomb Raider's back to basics approach reconnects it with it's roots which makes the game a much more promising entry this November

Personally, its probably the first Xbox One game I'm going to buy day one after a long break. After Ryse, you can forgive me for not going nuts over even timed exclusives.

Meh I will play the PC version instead. I remember playing the PS3 and 360 version of the Tomb Raider reboot and it looked like booty. I couldn't even play it.

I have both versions. I got the PC version after the fact.

And there's a difference between good looking and then you try to put a good looking game on a limited system. The resolution is low, frame rate is low, and there's too many jaggies.

People here like to give free passes to games.

I own the PC one and its amazing, but I am getting the sequel on X1. I am not waiting for it, there are too many great games to play next year.

Agreed, they should at least have dlc/unlockable skins to use. I enjoyed going through the games after i beat them finding treasures and doing time trials to unlock costumes and stuff. Even the top down version has additional skins.

Tomb raider reboot gave me Uncharted Vibe. This one from the extended trailer gave me mix of Uncharted and Last of Us(lara hunting in snow in trailer looked similar to part where ellie hunts enemies during winter).

I like both Uncharted and Last of Us but i want Tomb raider to be tomb raider the original which millions loved.

This Tomb Raider only resembles Uncharted in the Platforming. The action has a much heavier focus on stealth and a slower cautious approach, as she is placed in more of a survivalist type of role than an action role like Nate is.

The Last of Us is a fantastic game but it didn't invent those stealth or scavenging mechanics.

In reality, Rise of the Tomb Raider has very similar stealth and scavenging mechanics to Tomb Raider (2013), the latter of which came out before The Last of Us.

One of the enhancements in Rise of the Tomb Raider over the previous game is the ability to climb into trees and stalk from above, and The Last of Us never had such a mechanic.

The point is, Rise of the Tomb Raider seems like a clear evolution of the modern Tomb Raider reboot more than anything.

Yeah, they reset the bubbles. Most people with less than 5 bubbles now have 5 bubbles. Although I did see a few strange things like that "masterfox" guy, who used to have one bubble and now he has something like 10 bubbles. What's up with that?

It will be another Uncharted clone. A decent game sure but not Tomb Raider.

As for TR being an Uncharted clone that's bullshit. Lara does the same exact things in TR 2013 as she did in previous TR games. Yes, with less focus on exploration and puzzle solving but TR formula is still there. A formula that Uncharted also follows.

They said it last time? So what? Is TR 2013 the same game as Rise of TR? Have you played Rise of TR or are you working on it?

Played the originals more than you it seems. At least I know that TR is the Wolfenstein/doom of action adventure games. I know that it was released in 1996 when 3D was taking over and I know that it was the game that set the template for ALL action adventure games. It was the 1st game to have all the elements that we associate with action adventure games. Exploration, solving puzzles, swimming, platforming, climbing and shooting enemies. In later games driving vehicles, hand to hand combat, stealth and more stuff was added to that template. Isn't that what Lara and the Drake do in their games? Isn't that TR 2013 and Uncharted template?

If I'm wrong go ahead and tell me wich game before TR had all those elements combined in a single game and set the template for all action adventure games. I'll be waiting but please don't say that it was Uncharted.

BTW did you see the Drake's ice pick to free climb (instead of Lara'pickaxe) or his grapple hook in Uncharted 4 PSX demo? ND is even taking inspiration from Crystal Dynamics TR games.

There's more to this game that we've seen so far.

With heavy action set pieces and scripted events taken from Uncharted,survivalist stealth emphasis taken from TLoU, farming/crafting and metroidvania esque equipment progression it makes Tomb Raider it own game tho inspired by others.

Topping it off with Tombs and mind bending puzzles to find items of archaeology that feed the lore or educate in some instances....

We're in for a gem this Holiday and i can't wait.

I never liked the original Tomb Raider games but liked the reboot so I hope they keep the things liked (Bow and Arrow Mechanic which was fresh at the time, the Metroidvania element of going to previous areas for collectibles after obtaining upgrades that allow reaching new areas, Uncharted style shooting and more developed story)

Nope, Phil Spencer said he won't invest into game that will come to the rival platform. Unless Square Enix remakes the game (like ninja gaiden sigma 2 or Dead Rising chop till you drop) it won't be on PS4. Microsoft is the publisher and they paid for the assets for this game. Why would Microsoft invest so much money and time to let the exact same game on PS4? SquareEnix will have to remake the game essentially to get the game on the PS4. I highly doubt it is in their best interests to do this.

Well obviously Microsoft isnt going to pay for the Ps4 port. Whenever ROTTR eventually comes to Ps4 im sure Sony will be collaborating with Square Enix.

None of those 3 games were announced as TIMED exclusive. Titanfall was initially said to be so, until ms cut a bigger check. However, with the trouncing xbox is taking we know TF2 is already announced for ps4 and ms AIN'T gonna allow the xbox division, a division the board wants to get rid of by the way to write another big check for a PERMANENT 3rd party exclusive.

Bet you thought mass effect would NEVER arrive on ps3, how'd that turn out for you guys?

Here is one link regarding Ryse. Ryse could be on PS4. The problem is Microsoft helped them develop the game. So they probably won't let them use their assets to make the PS4 version. So they have to remake the game essentially and it isn't really worth their money/time to do so.

Also, it is assumed that Microsoft allowed EA to buy back the rights to the original Mass Effect (regarding assets). At that point in the generation there was no point for Microsoft to hold on to the title and more money to be made from selling the game than keeping it . That is why you got a comic book strip for mass effect 2 to explain the events of the first one instead of a simple port of the first game.
