Sony and Microsoft will talk about PS4 GPU Optimization, Morpheus, DirectX 12, Cloud & More at GDC

Sony and Microsoft are bringing the big guns to bear at the upcoming Game Developer's Conference, with a veritable slew of sponsored panels talking about some of the most interesting tech on PS4, Xbox One, Windows 10 and even mobile.

Other than the games the pa4 streams to my Vita and Xperia Z3, I don't feel a need to stream via DLNA. So if it happens then great for everyone who wants it, if not then no biggie.

Or like why would you a build a next gen console with ram that's designed specifically for graphics and not much else. Or why put a big GPU in you system being fed by a week CPU with both scenarios causing bottlenecks.

@Andofaus, maybe PS4 does have a relatively weak CPU, but xbone is just weak full stop. DDR3 ram is so last gen lol.

Sony gimped on the CPU , MS gimped on the whole console.

As long as the Xbox One is the CPU king, it's probably going to be the third-party machine of this generation as far as The Witcher 3 and Evolve are concerned. It'll be the PS4's GPU that pushes Uncharted into the best-looking exclusives camp at the very least.

Tomb raider isnt even an exclusive, its published by square enix in all other platforms. Even on the video of xbox channel ,games for 2015 it says "only on xbox holiday 2015"

Tomb Raider is cross generation, theres no way its graphics will even compare to Uncharted 4.

Gears of War, however, will definitely be a graphical showpiece for XB1

Out of that let's analyze that realistically...

1) Gears of War: traditionally...this game runs on the UNREAL engine known throughout the industry as "middleware" as it's the most baseline engine you can use (think if it as the old reliable Toyota corrola). What most devs do however is spruce up the engine. Add a turbo, put on a spoiler, new paint job etc. when they're all done however it's still a corolla. Granted it looks nice but it won't ever compete with a mid tier bmw type of game engine. going back to gaming terms the unreal engine (especially among the pc community where the graphics can be turned higher) is know to be an engine that "stretches it's limits" to try and look good (kinda Like the corolla) it looks good at first but when you start to poke around and look at textures etc you realize that up close it's not what you expected. The unreal engine is also a multi platform engine... It was never designed with Graphics in mind like cry engine or idtech5. it's "middleware" for a reason. Gears has NEVER won a graphics related award because of the fact that it's engine no matter how spruced up it is...can never compete with a specialize one.

Now if black tusk goes the route of their own engine to tailor to the xbox ones strengths we have a different story...then it may become a graphical contender.

2) Scalebound: not going to be a best graphics contender. The best looking game platinum has made was vanquish and it was not the prettiest. You could count mgs rising, but they used kojimas engine (which they can't use for Scalebound). Just the nature of Japanese development they aren't about graphics. If Scalebound is anything like platinums previous titles.. It will be a fun game with rock solid performance.

3) tomb raider: this one could go either way, but I'm leaning towards a no as well. Fist off tomb raider (unless it was maxed out on pc does not even come close to competing graphically with uncharted. Uncharted 2 looked better than tomb raider let alone uncharted 3 as evident by the numerous graphics awards they received OVER tomb raider. Also this game is cross generation...that hinders the possibilities substantially as they are most likely using the same assets (I don't think They are making totally separate variations with multiple teams for each generation not only is that too expensive but not probable.) It will be most likely ported down so the next gen assets cant be too taxing otherwise a 360 port won't be possible.

Not only that but the game is timed so whatever happens it will end up on a playstation platform in the future.

4) Halo: this is the only one with a legitimate shot. Custom game engine tailored to the system . Generally halo has not been about graphics even it's competitor Killzone outclasses every halo game In terms of graphics (despite Killzone being an inferior game overall)

This seems like it will change as bungle is out and a new developer is taking over.

Actually, Tomb Raider on consoles did compete quite well with the Uncharted games. And the PC version looked way better than any of the Uncharted games. Hell, I think the Definitive version on PS4 (which is fairly equivalent to the PC version) still looks better than most other PS4 games.

They did an amazing job on Tomb Raider and I have little doubt that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be one of the best looking games when it comes out.

CPU king?? The Xbox One and Ps4 have the EXACT SAME CPU. MS just overclocked it to squeeze a little more juice out of it. Why does everybody act like the Ps4 cpu is so much inferior??

The key thing to remember when it comes to both console's CPUs is memory bandwidth. It's far more important than clock speed, especially since no knows what the PS4's maximum CPU clock speed anyway.

They are the same series. The Xbox One CPU is 48 ops @ 1.75 ghz, while PS4 is 16 ops @ 1.6hz. The higher Ops is what gives the XB1 the advantage in multitasking.

Those numbers are for the baseline clock speeds. The maximum uptick clock speed for the PS4 is UNKNOWN.

They why do many third party games run at a higher resolution with better detail on the PS4?

Because the CPUs are the same with only a slightly faster clock on the x1, while the GPU is much better on PS4 that is why. This proven by that benchmark where the x1 did only 15 more renders with CPU but the PS4 GPU nearly doubled the number. Nice try, better luck next time.

According to a benchmark test already done the CPU in the Ps4 was already faster. Not the Xbox One.

I don't think it is a matter of overclocking, gpgpu is so much stronger on ps4, that any cpu shortfall can be made up there.

All this means is that Direct X12 will be offset by the GPU conference stuff from Sony. The ICE team will offset any other Xbox enhancements. We will be right back to square one of PS4 having the superior hardware which is also optimized like the Xbox One is claiming recently.
