Eurogamer: Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection HD Review

Christian Donlan writes: In Sony's new HD collection, both of Fumito Ueda's classics are reborn in 720p and 7.1 surround sound with improved frame rates and it's left to the player, rather than Tony Tanner, to unravel what they think of the games themselves. Instead of scholarly essays, there are downloadable themes - one for each game - and making-of videos (none of which we've been sent in our review copy, alas). Instead of the unusual cover image, there are trophies and stereoscopic 3D for both titles.

If Eurogamer give something a 9/10 you know it's good. Can't wait to see the trophies on my system!

Can someone explain the hype of these games to me? I understand that they are supposed to be emotional and not have huge setpieces and that's fine, but Ico... Looks kinda like a bad game to me.

SotC looks good though, kinda like Zelda but in a more realistic setting.

" not just in their shared fondness for windy skies, sun-bleached temples and inky enemies, but in the air of religious nastiness they have; the way they take you to a strange world of scapegoats and sacrifices, rituals and retaliations.

Games often bring out the armchair detective in people. These two bring out the armchair anthropologist. That's a big part of why they've endured, and also why this HD collection is such a delight.."

From the review.

It's one of those things where videos don't do it justice. I highly recommend you play it especially sotc.

"and not have huge setpieces"

Completly misinformed. SOTC has some of the biggest in gaming and really stand out even today.

dredgewalker4614d ago (Edited 4614d ago )

SOTC intimidated the hell out of me when it was first released and it still intimidates me with this hd release. Team ICO deserves its legendary status for making these 2 epic games. The unique style of both games is unequaled in terms of both ambition and execution even by today's standards.

why do all these reviewers claim they are reviewing the game when it is EXCRUCIATINGLY clear that 99.9% of them have not played this or ANY of the games in 3D? seriously cough of the change and do your job you FAKES, if all you are going to say is that it's playable in 3d then don't bother, because it says so on the back of the box.

and for those that think this isn't something big to be covered, these games came out YEARS ago and 3D is one of the FEW and SOLE things that IS 100% new about it. seriously you "reviewers" SUCK.

Technically Shadow of the Colossus is a PS2 remaster on PS3 but it is interesting seeing the progress made with emulation.

I'd probably go with Terra's Armor from KH2 FM. The very assence of overpowered superboss, even Sephiroth can't put a finger on him... or rather it.

I thought the Storm King fight in Demon's Souls using the Storm Ruler Sword was effing awesome.
