Battlefield 3 – The Most Realistic Looking Shooter Yet

OXCGN writes:-

"Battlefield 3 will be the most realistic-looking shooter yet.

Well that certainly is a bold statement to make, and one I personally feel is accurate, especially when we look at several games hitting the shelves this year in the First Person Shooter genre.

There are several games about to hit the market that could well set benchmarks higher than ever before, giving rise to greater gameplay, and ideally pushing other game developers to ‘step up’ to the mark with regards to their middleware engines that drive their games.

A game is only as good as the engine that powers it, both graphically, as well as in animation, storyline, gameplay mechanics and interactivity."

gaminoz4772d ago

It does look amazingly realistic, if the in-game vids are accurate.

I do hope that game-makers move away from military shooters soon though. This gen it was great playing Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (especially in Mexico) and Rainbow Six, but now everyone (even sci fi games) are doing this gung-ho swearing realistic military shooter thing, and it's getting old.

Do we have to be part of an army to play a shooter? Or some Duke Nukem character if we are on our own? I miss the quality spy shooter, especially with humour (I'd love another new Perfect Dark, Timesplitters, Bourne game, or No One Lives Forever (that was so fun!).

XboxOZ3604772d ago

I think there's room for all, as each developer does have its own genre speciality, and as they master it, they will of course produce more games of similar style.

There will always be great fun-shooters about, but there will also be the need for tactical shooters as well.

BeastlyRig4772d ago

For Battlefield how can they move away from military shooters? It's battlefield!

gaminoz4772d ago

I'm not saying Battlefield...(that has to be military).

I'm talking about the number of military shooters that publishers/ devs are focusing on since COD has done so well.

@ Oz

Yes there is room for all, but a disproportionate number of shooters coming out (even sci fi like Killzone and Resistance) end up being military.

XboxOZ3604772d ago

@ gaminoz:

True, there are course-for-horses as they say, and Battlefield needs to be realistic, but yes, there is a huge amount of 'shooters' out there, but as I've observed over the last 12 - 24 mths, when a development studio fronts with something that doesn't have a basic shooting baseline in it, it tanks, and the gamers steer away from it.

It's almost as if they are scared of innovation, and can not break away from the boring old 'lets shoot the crap out of everything' mentality, which is a huge shame.

Look at all the games trying to break away from that mould, they get lousy views from the gamers at large, and even though they may well get great scores and great industry reviews, the gamer steers away from them.

Leaving the publisher to push the developer to work on the 'good old shooter' and deliver what the bilk of the audience wants - which I think is wrong, but can understand it business wise.

Godem4772d ago

this game looks awesome, but im hoping its not one that just shows all the good bits in the trailers and the rest of the game is a step down.

Crysis 2 vs BF3 for best 360 graphics of 2011

XboxOZ3604772d ago

I think Battlefield 3 will tip the scales, especially when you view Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3 on a large screen in HD.

The Battlefield 3 gameplay just jumps out at you, while the Crysis 2, while great, lacks certain clarity in some of the smoke and debris filled air sections, especially when you've played the game going over the bridge early on in the game.

Sure, on a top end PC Crysis 2 looks amazing, but then again, Battlefield 3 would eclipse that when looking at same/similar scenes.

Plus the destructabilty of Battlefield is far greater than Crysis 2, and the amount of character movement you have in Battlefield 3 is far greater, more first-person animation and interaction with surroundings.

We have some great interview vids that we'll pop up soon once we gain approval from appropriate ppl, and that will certainly shed some light on the gameplay of Battlefield 3.

I'm certainly NOT saying Crysis 2 is some second rate cousin, not by a long shot, as it's awesome, and can't wait to get into it again.

But I think the 'reality' of Battlefield 3, without the Nano-suit protectivity or super enhancements will show the game up as being one of the most realistic of FPS out there, especially with regards to tactical games.

The only other game to give it some challenge in that department will be Operation Flashpoint: Red River which releases very soon.

BadCircuit4772d ago

These graphics are amazing. The destructibility of the environment makes the game very close to reality. But is that a good thing...

gaminoz4772d ago

I think destructibility is great!

XboxOZ3604772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

For this 'particular title' I think it IS a good thing, as the game is about a realistic style warfare, tactical use of a team, and the ability to feel 'enmeshed' within the game's world.

If it were a game like say L.A. Noire, which while having the world best animation for facial recognition, and real actors playing the parts of all NPCs, it does 'look' like a game, and is intended to be that way.

It too will be an excellent example of new and innovative technology, yet still leave the gamer knowing he is playing a game, but relying on other visual clues to complete the game, rather than the size of his gun or how fast he can blaze his/her way through a level.

So having a 'realistic looking' and a 'realistic actionable' game for a specific genre is the right thing. Gears Of War needs to look like it does, it certainly is not realistic, that's for sure, but it does look great.

But does it have the player 'feel' like they are part of something 'realistic' . . not likely.

If that makes sense?

Only one the PC..

seriously console fans, I'm not trying to stir stuff up but up until now what we've seen on the BF3 trailer are from the PC build, we haven't seen anything on the console build and I bet you the console builds will just look like Bad COmpany 2 but with a different tone of lighting... so don't get too excited now coz I'm not..

EA's marketing team is using hi-res shots or PC builds from Crysis 2 and BF3 that's how they sell those to people.. and feeble gamers (and there are many of them) will eat it..

I'm not against EA's marketing strategy, hell I would do the same if I want to sell a product.

blackhammer4772d ago

I admire yee attempt at not starting the flame war.

And I also totally agree with you.

Mr Tretton4772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

Well, you're right, BF3 is a generation ahead (maybe more) of the consoles. It's making me think of getting a gaming PC.

XboxOZ3604772d ago (Edited 4772d ago )

WHile I acknowledge the PC version, with all the extras turned on will no doubt be brilliant, DICE have assured ppl in their various interviews (Head over to Game Informer) that each build will look great, and that the Frostbite 2 engine allows them to do things they simply could not do in the past on consoles, allowing them to deliver games far beyond what one would expect.

The fact is, we will all (PC, PS3 & X360) have a great experience with the title, as each is being built for each platform, again, as indicated in their interviews at Game Informer main news site. DICE have clearly stated, 'we are not simply porting it to the consoles ..... but built separately"

WHy can't we simply acknowledge that a game development studio like DICE is doing the right thing for ALL concerned, rather than be like kids in the playground peeing up against the wall to see who's better than the others.

Does it really matter? - no.

The new engine will not only look good, but enable the gameplay to be far superior than anything we've experienced before for a cross platform title, allowing each platform to experience the various new abilities of the Frostbite 2 engine.

Already the engine is being touted for other great EA games, and will be licensed out to enable other multiplatform games to have the detail, mechanics, and realism put into those titles.

Give the Platform wars a rest, and let's just enjoy 'gaming' . . real gamers don't give a toss which platform a great game appears on, so long as they can enjoy it.

Report: Sexual Misconduct Investigation Conducted at EA, Suspects Named and What They Did Revealed

EA senior staff has been investigated for sexual misconduct involving female coworkers, and these said people have been named publicly.

isarai1d 5h ago

Aye just call Phil, i mean he somehow made Bobby Kotick's scandal disappear and gave him a few million dollar high five on the way out.

Cacabunga20h ago

I wonder if it will be censored with some in game ads.

XiNatsuDragnel1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

EA about to go down like Activision and then Phil saves the day saying.this is good for the industry and consolidation will help create competition. /s.

ravens521d ago

What's up with all these horny creeps. You gon be horny, fine. Just not at work take care of that shit before you go in. Rub one out if you have to. Don't be a creep at all. ESPECIALLY at work. But don't be one AT ALL.

Extermin8or3_19h ago

I mean part of the issue is that things transpired outside of work....

KwietStorm_BLM19h ago

You think deviants care where they are? Work sometimes makes it an even better situation for them because they can abuse their power.

mudakoshaka3h ago

Nerds think they are Gods when they are making video games.

NotoriousWhiz23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

"it seems that according to EA, given the events transpired outside of work between two adults, and the fact that once investigation has started that the alleged perpetrators didn’t do it again, the investigation is considered closed. [...] The victim still has to work with the people that harassed her."

Yep, EA is disgusting.

Extermin8or3_19h ago

I mean the fact stuff happened outside of work puts EA in quite a difficult position legally. These women don't seem to have reported the matter to the police which kinda ties EA's hands on what they can do. If they don't file reports of the crimes then yeah from EA's perspective it is stuff that happened outside of work. The only exception is the guy that apparently referenced things in the slack channel for work, spending on what he said proving it may be very hard and he may well be able to get away with plausible deniability. I don't like EA and I think these people need to be dismissed but without any legal action being taken, EA can't really do much without risk of being sued themselves for unfair dismissal etc.

I wonder what the next buzz word they'll slap in front of AI to make it sound exciting next? "Generative" as if it's creating its own content. Lol.

Cacabunga66d ago

EA is already dying a painful death..

peppeaccardo66d ago

i have a better idea .. why the whole exec team doesn't get replaced by chat bots ?

just_looken67d ago

Though i agree the ai thing is already in other forms of media there have been ai translations/scripts/voice over and even full ai commercials aired on tv. Ubisoft has created a ai game creator story/vo/music except the building of the game

The new unreal engine has auto terrain creation tools

In the world of greed in which it is winning without any major blow back ai is our future.

everyone want's biden dead on the mic or a criminal instead of a woman and now we are getting ai everything because no one will stop watching/playing ai created media.

GamerRN66d ago

Maybe they should just focus on making good games?

Just a thought...

Kiryu199266d ago

Exactly EA are just pure evil. When they are beating Bank of America to be voted the worst company to work for that’s saying a lot

Good thing I don’t buy their games day one and wait for deep deep sale years after launch (the select few games I am actually interested in)

Gaming is making so much money yet the greed of these companies is never ending

CEO’s and people on board making millions yet cutting jobs to those who are actually making the products

EA is still a shady shitty company even with or without the help of Skynet. All they will use AI for is new ways to milk loot boxes and come up with the same sports title with a different year on the label. They are one company I truly do hate with a passion. They single handedly ruined some great franchise with their death touch. ME, Dead Space, Alice Returns, Dante's Inferno.

Stuart575667d ago

EA layoffs followed by 'Generative AI to Drive Monetization'

I knew it. Wonder what AI salary looks like? Nothing.

ChasterMies66d ago

I having a feeling that most of the layoffs in the industry are based on the idea that AI will do the same job for less.

DarXyde66d ago

Very likely, yes.

Made worse by the fact that the execs aren't changing their compensations.

My deepest fear at this point is that we are now in the capitalism endgame.

At this point, we really should just burn AI to the ground. Executives cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
How are those people expected to support families if everything gets automated?

Barlos67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

And take away creativity, and people's jobs as we've been seeing. Got it.

No thanks. I want my games created by people, not AI.

CobraKai67d ago

Exactly. If or when games start becoming more AI than people, im done with gaming. AI and companies like EA can suck donkey d***k.

just_looken67d ago

Though i agree remember this is no ps3/360 era were we got up to 3 games in one generation from on developer like gears/halo/bioware/sony/ms

The people today are pro esg/sweet baby for the most part AAA gaming is imploding right now.

We should be stepping back re evaluate everything as a whole this year xmen 97 written/directed by a woman that is nuts and its also being made by a group reshaping bodies to be less sexual like wtf. A dam famous cartoon from the 90's is being rebuilt with millions spent to be worse in everyway.

Gaming/movies/tv shows made today are worse than what we had 7years ago ai won't change this but that ai is also being made by these groups so either way we are screwed.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Eonjay66d ago

Don't be of afraid of women. Sexy characters in games and movies still exist. Got my Stellar Blade on preorder!!! Everything all the time doesn't need to be sexual...that's stupid, childish and dull.

Chocoburger67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

EA doesn't want to lose their title of worst gaming company ever, always trying their best to remain the champs!
What's sad is that they have so much potential to be a decent publisher.

SSX Tricky / SSX 3
Def Jam Vendetta / Fight for New York
NBA Street
NFL Steet
Mirror's Edge
Bad Company
Burnout 3 / 4 / 5

Remember when EA used to be awesome? It's all over with now. Unpolished, if not out-right broken games these days. Endless monetization and gambling in their sports games, and let's not forget wasting hours of your life trying to unlock characters or equipment using "surprise boxes!"
