Electronic Theatre In-depth Review: Killing Floor

Tripware Interactive's Killing Floor has been brought to retail by the growing Iceberg Interactive. Becoming a seemingly stronger brand with near every release, Iceberg Interactive have chosen their titles wisely, and in Killing Floor the publisher intends to attract more of that market that pays attention to such things; the Hardcore Gamer.

The comparisons with Left 4 Dead are inevitable. While it would be easy to state that Killing Floor has taken inspiration from everything from Quake III: Arena to Zombies (also known as Zombies Ate My Neighbours) from the 16-bit era, from Resident Evil's famously supplementary Mercenaries Mode to the Unreal Tournament series, Left 4 Dead is the most direct current competitor around, and obviously the brightest shining example of the subgenre in recent years. That subgenre into which Killing Floor so easily fits is the co-operative survival-based First-Person Shooter; there is a story behind it all, but it's entirely superfluous to the action when in the thick of it.

Is actually pretty damn good. It might be a bit overshadowed by Left 4 Dead, but really it's got plenty of it's own ideas.

Graphically it looks quite nice. And I believe this is the first time they're using a new engine rather than a previous one.

Gunplay always felt really good with the KF games. My only complaint with this game and similar ones like L4D is that they become too predictable after a bit, so it gets quite boring. If the game doesn't have AI learning then at least give the enemies more methods of attacking players.

VS mode didn't work in KF2 because the game and enemies weren't designed for it from the start, that's what happens when it's tacked on and also takes place in an arena, it just becomes a camping game. Game mode wise I would prefer regular survival mode and one or two others, like a coop campaign and something else, but if they add VS it's gotta be done right from the beginning.
