Ubisoft Has Been Wanting to Make an Assassin's Creed Game Set in Feudal Japan for a "Long Time"

The Nerd Stash: Assassin's Creed: Shadows is delivering what fans have begged for: an AC game in Feudal Japan. It turns out the devs wanted it just as bad.

Tell me lies tell me sweet little baby lies

-Foxtrot2d ago

Yet you never did it

We’ve been waiting for this since Assassins Creed III, hell even during Revelations people were mentioning it. So that’s over 12-13 years now.

The fact is they didn’t want to do it, saw how successful Ghost of Tsushima was and then decided to do it because someone else took the risk first

isarai2d ago

Is it me or is there a sudden surge of Ubisoft defenders on this site? 🤔

-Foxtrot2d ago

I saw this on a few subreddits aswell

Why the sudden urge to defend them after all the shitty things they’ve said and done.

gigoran85h ago

I think they're defending "the message" not the game

raWfodog14h ago

To be fair, the article mentions that the 'devs' have been wanting to make a feudal Japan game for a long time.

We all know that it's the corporate execs that make the final decision on what games the devs will make.

-Foxtrot13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Not really, it's complete bullshit

https://www.complex.com/pop...

"People on the Internet suggest the most boring settings," said Hutchinson. "The three most wanted are WWII, feudal Japan and Egypt. They're kind of the three worst settings for an AC game."

And yet...

raWfodog10h ago

Alex Hutchinson left Ubisoft as Creative Director back in 2017 (that article from Complex is 12 years old). Surely there were actual devs since then (at least one from the nerdstash article) that wanted to do feudal Japan.

just_looken11h ago

I know old games had it like black flag but when i saw that spearman with a red glowing dot i am like oh oh i know that game.

But hey we get to listen japan people play 80's hiphop while fighting english speaking generic asain dudes that all have the same face/hairstyle/moves/clothing

Meanwhile, this ancient article with comments from the director of AC3

https://n4g.com/news/973762...

Chocoburger8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Four thousand, four hundred, fifty-three days later, all 3 came to pass.

We got some WWII from Unity side missions. We got Egypt from Origins (yeah, it was boring just like Alex said it would be), and now we're getting Japan.

I have no interest in the 'new era' of AC games, that are such a repetitive grind, too bad because I've always wanted Japan back when I was a fan.

Quite sad it took them this long to get to an Asian setting for a big AC game.

The game looks pretty generic and rough unfortunately. The setting looks nice only because Japan already looks beautiful.

I'll pick it up for $15 on sale half a year from it's release lol.

isarai2d ago

You left hints at the end of the very first game for feudal japan, you later made an official statement saying you will never go to feudal japan, you compromised with the garbage AC chronicles. Then GoT did it for you, and better, now you want to come out with not only AC Shadows but also AC Jade. What a joke 🤣

Skuletor11h ago

Chronicles had China, not Japan.

They were waiting for the time to be ripe for when Yasuke's controversy would reach its peak.

"the music that builds up once Yasuke enters combat infuses the traditional Japanese shakuhachi and koto melodies with hip-hop beats" oh dear lord. DEI TRASH.

Huey_My_D_Long1d 6h ago

Wow sounds like something outta Samurai Champloo, but you know gotta pretend its an agenda instead just saying "Im racist"

lucian2291d 6h ago

so he's racist because it's dumb to put hiphop in a game in japan? i myself am from brooklyn nyc; im dark skin and even i find it dumb. just like when live action aladdin had hip hop instead of arab music.......maybe just not go for the whole cultural appropriation thing.....or is it only bad when white people do it?

Inverno1d 5h ago

It's more racist to me seeing hip hop being automatically associated with blackness, when it's more of an American thing and there are black people well outside America that have no cultural connection with hip hop. The more appropriate thing to do would be to incorporate whatever music, he as a real historical figure, would've most likely have a cultural connection to. So whatever music being performed in east Africa in the 1500s.

lucian2291d 5h ago

hip hop was created by black americans........it's factual.....LOL that's like saying western knights and armor being thought of with europeans is racist. like what

Huey_My_D_Long1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

@lucian229
Idk if you lying, but in good faith Ill assume you arent.
Its the DEI comment, should be pretty apparent thats the racist part.
Kinda makes me question what you say since you gonna make it about "Hip Hop music in an asian setting." instead of the obvious dog whistle but hey, maybe as a dark skin brother, you are unaware of how DEI is a dog whistle for "black".

So SAMURAI CHAMPLOO is an JAPANESE ANIME set in EDO period. "The music of the 2004 anime series Samurai Champloo, created by the studio Manglobe, was produced by a team of four composers drawn from the hip hop musical scene. They were Shinji "Tsutchie" Tsuchida of Shakkazombie, Fat Jon, Nujabes and Force of Nature. The musical direction was chosen by series creator and director Shinichirō Watanabe as part of his planned blending of hip hop culture with the anime's setting in the Edo period, additionally incorporating contributions from guest artists."
Thats to the moron calling it DEI Trash, illustrating that Japanese themselves love hip hop so all of sudden when an french studio do it, its DEI, where Samurai Champloo is one of the classics.

@lucian229
Do you wanna have a conversation about cultural appropriation? Are you making the argument this is cultural appropriation?

Slow year this year, So this probably gonna be my GOTY, especially since they seem to be revamping the stealth in AC. Which is good. As much as I love the series, Ive always felt stealth has always been their weakest element, so its nice to see them fleshing it out mechanically. Yasuke looks pretty cool, but I think the new stealth stole the show.
