Ghost of Tsushima reaches 1 million sales in Japan

PlayStation Japan: "Ghost of Tsushima has achieved the honorable sales of 1 million copies in Japan! I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the domestic users who have adventured Japan in the Kamakura period with Hitoshi Sakai and his friends."

Nyxus344d ago

Well deserved! I hope they make a sequel.

potatoseal344d ago (Edited 344d ago )

They're totally making a sequel. I mean a Ghost of Tsushima movie is in the works. Job listings went up that mentioned knowledge of feudal Japan I think. A lot of evidence pointing to a sequel. Not to mention the raging sucess of the first game. If there were zero plans to make a sequel, the studio would have come out and shot down any mention of a sequel. There has been a lot of mentions. So much so that a sequel is what everyone thinks is happening.

Maybe a sequel doesn't necessarily mean Jin. Maybe someone else could take up the mantle of "The Ghost". Who knows. Whichever way they're going, I'm super excited for a sequel.

Jeff Grub said in a recent podacst, "Moving back to PlayStation Showcase, I might have just sniffed out two things that won't be there, if that helps anybody. It doesn't sound like Ghost of Tsushima 2 will be there,". So maybe no one should expect it at the Sony showcase.

Tal169344d ago

I have heard so much about this game, but gave it a go and it really wasn't for me. I did appreciate a lot about it, though, so am not surprised to hear it doing well. Combat was brilliant.

SullysCigar344d ago

^ @Tal169, I felt that way about a lot of the better open world games, to be honest. The Witcher, Horizon, Read Dead, Days Gone, Tsushima - all games I've struggled with for a good 10+ hours before they click and I end up loving them right through to the end.

Knushwood Butt344d ago

I've tried to get into it twice. Both times got past the intro section and then to the bit where the kid fights his father under the maple tree with three million leaves falling, and both times never got past that bit.

darthv72344d ago

I think I read the sequel is called ghost of kamakura, or something like that.

Charlieboy333344d ago (Edited 344d ago )

@ Knushwood Firstly, that's his uncle not his father. Secondly, that part is the tutorial which teaches you the basics of swordplay you need for the rest of the game. So you couldn't make it through the ( very well done ) tutorial? My, what patience you must have! You surely would have lost interest when having to learn the bow, etc. Or the ghost skills oh no! Or did the uncle kick your ass in the tutorial because it was too hard for you? Sorry, but people who can't be bothered to make it past the tutorial stage aren't qualified to voice any kind of opinion on a game. Knushwood....YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED GHOST OF TSUSHIMA YET.....so please don't waste everyone's time commenting on it.

Knushwood Butt344d ago

*

I don't remember if I beat that section or not. I don't remember it being difficult. It just didn't grab me, at all, so I went back to playing other stuff.

Sorry if that offends you, but maybe you'd be a happier person if you chilled out.

Charlieboy333344d ago

@Knushwood Sorry man, I just happened to read your comment while I was in a really bad mood. I also found the start to be slow, but experienced one of the best games I've ever played because I gave it a proper chance and playtime till the game opened combat wise, story wise, location wise, etc. Just felt frustrated with you for some reason. I apologise. Just got home from work and had s beer.....I'm in a better mood now 😐

Knushwood Butt344d ago

@ Charlie

No worries
I totally appreciate that I've hardly played the game and not really experienced what the game has to offer, but I have tried twice. I bought it on PS4 day 1.
Maybe someday I'll give it another go

As a fan, you've likely already checked out the expansion, Iki Island - but if you haven't, you must!

A PS5-only sequel would be amazing. The first game is still stunning on PS5 to this day and holds up well against brand new games in terms of looks and as a game overall. I love the tension, atmosphere and attitude of this game!

Nyxus344d ago

Haven't played the expansion yet but I will! I got the Director's Cut for PS5 so it came with that.

jznrpg344d ago (Edited 344d ago )

Its been rumored that Sucker Punch started working on GoT2 soon after the first game but do they have another IP in the works with a second team as most of their studios have added another team?

SullysCigar344d ago

A good time to reflect on those articles claiming a Western developer making an Eastern game in this vein was in some way 'cultural appropriation' and offensive to the natives of that region.

To those writers, I say "LOL" and point them to these sales numbers. Two of the game's developers were even made tourism ambassadors for the island they portrayed, which shows how well regarded this game was by the Japanese authorities. Sucker Punch developed this game with absolute respect for the culture and people.

Now please announce a sequel!

Profchaos344d ago

I don't recall seeing those articles maybe a few comments around western devs don't understand and they won't do it justice etc but far from an outcry those people who call this stuff out are more often than not are just looking to be angry at something

Pocahontas344d ago

Really? That’s pretty dope!

garos82344d ago

that sounds too low for such an epic game in the nation of gaming maniacs!

VersusDMC344d ago

It's at 10 mil worldwide.

It is high number for japan most games don't go to 300k. For comparison Breath of the wild was at 2 mil last year in Japan.

SullysCigar344d ago (Edited 344d ago )

This being a home console game makes the biggest difference. If it was on a handheld, it would have sold much more, because that market is just so much bigger in Japan than the home console market.

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC13d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier13d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k413d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy8513d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga13d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS712d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

raWfodog13d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto13d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies13d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS712d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast13d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.

I actually do not mind if Marathon releases on multiple platforms . I just wish that Marathon has a dedicated single player campaign.

DaniMacYo13d ago

Helldivers 2 is exactly what gaming needed. I’m loving it.

I would be on it. Especially if they change up the gameplay to differentiate from first game. Loved the first.

Currently enjoying Rise of Ronin.

blackblades29d ago

Both have different gameplay but it amazes me how people kept comparing just because they both are samurai. Seems kinda ...... that im not gonna mention.

Cacabunga29d ago

Bend studios making a gaas game and getting lot of negative comments abt that direction.
I hope these stay faithful to making amazing SP games..

Demetrius29d ago

Definitely getting ronin soon, I'm on my 2nd playthrough of GOT on ps5 this time🔥

-Foxtrot30d ago

Probably my most anticipated to be announced

I hope Jinns story continues and we get way more stealth tactics like dragging bodies away and the like.

Lightning7730d ago

I fully expect this game to be announced. Late 2025 release perhaps.

Either way I can't wait for its announcement at Sony's showcase.

Friendlygamer29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

I'm hoping for more complex interior level design for stealth gameplay and also a more complex stance system that's more than rock paper and scissor for each enemy type

RhinoGamer8829d ago

I have stopped pre-ordering games since Cyberpunk 2077 fiasco...this is a game I will make an exception for...
