Hogwarts Legacy narrowly denies Metroid Prime Remastered No.1 | UK Boxed Charts

Gamesindustry: "It's the fourth biggest physical Metroid game launch, despite arriving nearly a month after the digital version. Also new this week is Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty from Koei Tecmo, which debuts at No.8. 96% of physical retail sales were on PlayStation platforms, although boxed sales of the game are low. We'll have a better idea of its performance once the digital data comes in."

96% of physical sales for Wo Long were on PlayStation Platforms?! That's insane!!

I know it does not include digital, but talk about Game Pass cannibalizing sales on their platform, I hope Koei Tecmo got a good amount of money out of MS, because they are certainly are not selling anything over there.

monkey602432d ago

I know we are working with one side of the argument here and while I have absolutely no fact to base this off, I cant imagine digital sales on Xbox were incredible either. If digital is your default method of getting games then why would you buy it that way instead getting it on gamepass anyway? Having Atomic Heart and some more to sweeten the deal.

Gamepass is absolutely cannibalising game sales. There is no way it couldn't be.

RpgSama432d ago

I think at this point a lot of developers just know games basically do not sales on MS platforms, so might as well just put them on Game Pass and get something or just avoid Xbox all together.

In the short term will most likely benefit Game Pass holders because it will "feel" like they are getting more and bigger games on their service, but Long term developers will just not bother, because I do believe that it will start cannibalizing sales from other platforms as well, people will not play it on Xbox system because they do not have one and do not care about getting one, but will not buy them on their platform of choice because the perceived value of games continuously lessens when you see them given away for "free" on Xbox.

ActualEngineer432d ago

@RpgSama how about not putting the game on GP and selling it how ever you would have sold it normally. Do you seriously believe that Xbox and the MS platform with it's 70+ million (old gen + next combined) user base has no sales in games outside gamepass ?!

Are you a bot?

RpgSama432d ago

@actualEngineer

"Do you seriously believe that Xbox and the MS platform with it's 70+ million (old gen + next combined) user base has no sales in games outside gamepass ?!"

I mean, I'm not saying that they have NO sales whatsoever, but the numbers that we do get month after month show an ever decreasing % of sales on the systems Vs other Systems, sometimes to ridiculous levels.

So it is certainly a trend.

EvertonFC432d ago

At this point roughly 95% of Xbox gamers just want free games as part of GP sub.
The problem here is Xbox sales are not exactly setting the world on fire and subscription numbers for GP imo are never gonna get to the 50/100million mark MS expects to turn an actual profit.

How can Series S play physical?

CrimsonWing69432d ago

Doesn’t Microsoft pay a certain amount for the game to be on Gamepass that is a case by case situation? The publisher doesn’t have to agree on putting their game on Gamepass. It sounds like the deal comes to what is the minimum amount based on projected sales that would make the sum difference of putting the game on the service congruent to current users and have the game be successful on the platform.

Also, I’m curious of global differences of sales. The UK is small and number 6 in market. To put it in context it’s just above France.

China, United States, and Japan dwarf it in the market by a considerable amount. Also, I believe the UK is predominantly PlayStation consumers.

Nyxus432d ago

Actually Xbox is bigger in the UK than in almost any other European country. In the UK it's 44% Xbox to 56% PlayStation: https://twitter.com/Chris_D...

And as to the UK being small: https://twitter.com/oliver_...

CrimsonWing69432d ago (Edited 432d ago )

Ok, sorry I should’ve clarified. UK supports PlayStation more than Xbox.

https://www.videogameschron...

71% use it as the primary console to 48% for Xbox Series X.

As for the market, how comparable are the numbers? US in massive is software sales compared to 3rd place Japan in the tweet you posted. So, yes, UK could be the 2nd biggest market for Sony, but I’m not sure you’ve seen software sales for Japan and Sony games… but it’s not close compared to US. My point is UK is small in comparison to 6 other global markets:

https://newzoo.com/insights...

US pulls in 45B in revenue while UK pulls in 5.5B… it’s a pretty big difference.

But to keep on point the comment was 96% of physical copies of Wo Long was sold on PlayStation platforms in UK. What I’m trying to put into perspective are numbers.

Let’s say what is the total number to PS UK sales for the game to US Xbox sales of the game. That’s what I’m wanting to know.

Who cares. The developers are being compensated and the gamers who are subscribed to the service get to play those games without paying full price. From the gamers point of view, it is a great time.

I read through the other comments and some are implying that the developers are getting pocket change in these dealings with Microsoft. If you were the publisher of a huge game costing almost $100m to make, would you agree to launch it on game pass for only 1 or 2 million dollars. No! These developers are being paid based on what they think is good for their profits.

ApocalypseShadow431d ago (Edited 431d ago )

First, no AAA third party developer making a 100 million dollar budget game, is going to put it on game pass. Because companies like Rockstar know that they'd lose money. It's why none of the big developers put their games on it day one.

Microsoft isn't going to pay the cost of R&D and the potential sales of a games like that.

Some of these smaller developers do get paid. Because it's easier for them and less risky launching for themselves. But it's a double edge sword. These same developers will find that their games will now have to be on game pass permanently. If Xbox gamers aren't buying the first game, why do you think Xbox gamers would buy the sequel? They won't. Xbox gamers will just wait for the game pass release from now on. Thing is, Microsoft controls the purse strings. They could offer less money the next time around if the first game didn't get a huge amount of engagement numbers. Now the developer is stuck. Either accept the lower payment or they're toast. Because Microsoft would be more interested in spending money on a better game that brings in more engagement.

You think everything is good now because you think you're saving money. But the reality is that you're hurting these developers long term just for your short term enjoyment of paying less money. But I think you know this or just want to ignore the reality. Microsoft themselves have admitted that sales are cannibalized because of game pass. You can't dispute it. They said it. Anything you say is just opinion without facts.

Lol the PS5 version of Wo Long outsold the PS4 version by more than 12-1 (89% of total sales on PS5, 7% on PS4).

https://www.nintendolife.co...

Nyxus432d ago (Edited 432d ago )

And the PS4 version still outsold the Xbox Series S/X version (at least in physical sales).

JEECE432d ago

True. Seems to be the Gamepass Effect. It seems like when a game isn't on GP, Playstation sales in the UK are more like 80% of the total, whereas when a game is on GP, Playstation sales are usually 90%+.

MadLad432d ago

The thing is on Gamepass. People like Gamepass. Money still went to the dev/publisher.

Chevalier432d ago

https://amzn.eu/d/jlcugkb it did come to Xbox though. So weird the physical sales are not present in any way

gold_drake432d ago

damn, Wo Long coming in with the 96% retail sales on playstation

ZeekQuattro432d ago

Not bad for Metroid Prime at all. Still crazy it was shadow dropped and the physical came later the same month.

Snookies12432d ago

Great to see the love for Metroid Prime! I just hope the rumors aren't true about 2 & 3 being ports, rather than given the same remaster treatment.

Was Hogwarts Legacy Only Successful Because Of Nostalgia?

Shahmeer from eXputer: "I've always wondered whether the success of Hogwarts Legacy had much to do with nostalgia. The RPG is great but certainly not free of issues."

Markdn10d ago

I totally agree, and no replay value for sure but enjoyed every minute I was playing it. Not a Harry Potter fan but still really enjoyed

Lexreborn210d ago

I still haven’t finished it, mostly due to it not holding my interest after 20 hours. Wouldn’t say it’s a bad game, wouldn’t say it’s amazing I really can’t judge it fully due to not completing it.

Lexreborn210d ago

lol are people upset because I said I put 20 hours into the game and that because I haven’t finished I won’t criticize it’s value or if nostalgia generates it’s success? That’s funny

CrimsonWing6910d ago

Harry Potter is one of the biggest IPs in the world. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why it sold so much. It’s a great game on top of that, so the math kind of maths here.

Can’t wait for the article on if Zelda or Mario only sold well due to nostalgia.

Crows9010d ago

They're trying to find a fake reason for its success...the mainstream hate how successful it became because of the writer behind the series.

So now they want to say that people bought it not because they liked it but only because of nostalgia....as if harry potter is really that old or even a classic IP in the game industry.

thorstein10d ago

That doesn't even make any sense. The author made those statements before the game released. People knew ahead of time and wanted a boycott.

But most people knew any boycott would only punish the people who worked on the game and put their hearts into it (like most boycotts).

So many people bought it, enjoyed it immensely, and moved on.

VenomUK10d ago

@CrimsonWing69 A greatly in demand IP only takes you so far, if it was crap quality then the reviews and word of mouth would have stalled its sales. But it is a good game (judged by Metacritic and user reviews) and that has given the game legs.

Tzuno10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

ngl, it got me in the first half hour
after that, a big let down, mediocre at every step
only fans are praising it

Markdn10d ago

In what way was it mediocre, can't really find anything about it that was mediocre and I'm not a hp fan

Demetrius10d ago

It's still a good game almost time for a 2nd playthrough, the passion they put into it is🔥🔥 crazy how after a couple months or a year folks get to complaining about this n that about certain games smh childish mfs
