Variety Review: The Tale of Despereaux

At heart, "The Tale of Despereaux" is the story of a rat that nearly ruins a kingdom and of a mouse that valiantly saves it. Like a classic fairy tale, Despereaux's story changes a little with each retelling: Between the book, the film, the DS game and the Wii game, key plot points change, and even major scenes -- like the first encounter between the titular mouse and the beautiful princess -- play out differently.

But from the game's standpoint, the story hardly matters: While both the handheld and the console versions give perfunctory nods to the film, they pare the story down to help Despereaux speed through a castle in which everyday objects become an oversized obstacle course and dodging a ladybug can mean life or death.

Game-Boyz: The Tale of Despereaux Review

Game-Boyz:

"Overall, The Tale of Despereaux for the DS is perfect game for those younger and somewhat experienced gamers who loved the movie and own a DS. The sound and graphics will not blow you away, however the overall gameplay offers enough substance for fans 2D platformers. The Tale of Despereaux is movie based game that is pretty darn good for those who like their gaming on the go. Younger gamers in particular will have lots of fun navigating the little mouse across the 36 levels available as it will provide them with some enjoyable gaming while in the car, at home during a rainy or snowy day, or while just killing some time before then head out for a day with the family."

IGN: The Tale of Despereaux Review

Regardless of the version, Tale of Despereaux is the type of game you need to avoid at all costs. Despereaux's movement and jumping (especially on the PS2) is pretty much a disaster; combat is a serious exercise in button-mashing and the lack of camera control, as well as any real sense of depth, makes playing through Despereaux a chore. No matter where you look, you'll only see poorly executed game design.
