Ghost of Tsushima Has Sold 9.73 Million Copies on PS5 & PS4; Foxes Were Pet 75.18 Million Times

Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima will be two years old on Sunday, July 17, and the developer published some statistics to celebrate.

-Foxtrot652d ago (Edited 652d ago )

Nearly 10 million for a new IP in 2 years that's insane, and I'm sure this isn't even counting digital.

JEECE652d ago

I'm not sure why you'd assume the developer of the game, who is owned by the same company that runs the only digital storefront where the game is available, would not know digital sales numbers.

-Foxtrot652d ago

I only said it because sometimes, and I said SOMETIMES, depending on the developer / company, they would usually note that "this isn't counting digital" etc

generic-user-name652d ago

Likely includes digital and Director's Cut numbers too.

FallenAngel1984652d ago

This level of success is why Sucker Punch may never return to producing more Sly Cooper and inFamous games

chicken_in_the_corn652d ago

Imo that isn't a bad thing. They've had their time and Ghost is a better game.

Elda652d ago

Developers move on to bigger & better things,it's part of evolving. Possibly one of Sony's smaller studios may bring those games back one day.

nevin1652d ago

@Elda. Is that why Jak and Daxter never appeared on PS3 or PS4?

refocusedman651d ago

infamous was a pretty successful franchise. I'm not sure why they would abandon it.

outsider1624652d ago

How do you know that? They might return who knows (atleast for Infamous though).

Would love Sly Cooper get the same treatment as Rift Apart.

DarXyde652d ago

I'd say that's a good thing.
Sony realigning some of their studios is not at all a bad thing for me. Another studio can do something with those games. I happen to think SP found their calling with Ghost. Similar to Guerilla in a way: I never cared for Killzone and believe they really hot their stride with Horizon.

Those series have their fans, of course, but I think it's best to have some new blood take those on (or hire another team within).

mkis007652d ago

I would love them to bring what they learned back to infamous. SS repetitive side quests were the only dark spot on those games.

Didn't Days Gone sell over 9 million copies yet was considered a failure by Sony?

Sciurus_vulgaris652d ago (Edited 652d ago )

Days Gone didn’t perform as well as Ghost of Tsushima. Days Gone had early price drops and relied on discounts to sell. Ghost of Tsushima had strong sales from launch. Early full-priced sales are very important for publishers when it comes to accessing the performance of their titles.

VersusDMC652d ago

That and a buggy launch and bad reviews. And the main writer quitting/getting fired right after launch(john garvin has said on podcasts).

Why would you want a sequel without the sole writer anyways?

Fishy Fingers652d ago (Edited 652d ago )

Man, those price drops and discounts worked, best 1st party PSN seller in its launch year, top 10 all year and outpaced Ghosts in the same time frame.

Would be interesting to see that price drop data you got.

VersusDMC652d ago

@fishy fingers

Released April 26 and was 40 on June 7 for Days of play. And i got it sometime that year for 20 or 30.

Not knocking the game. Loved it. I platinumed it. But not going revise history...

outsider1624651d ago

Yeah..but still Days Gone reached 9 million even with the price drop..I'm sure that's considered a success now? Or is it still
considered a failure.

Sciurus_vulgaris651d ago

@outsider1624

Sales numbers given by Day Gone’s we’re not officially supported by Sony. The sales numbers in question also appear to be inaccurate. If Sony was pleased by Day Gone’s sales company would have official announced them.

Bobertt652d ago

One of the reasons they didn't make a sequel was because Andrew Layden retired. He was one of the big supporters of the game at Sony and after he retired the new management didn't care for Days Gone.

Orchard652d ago

Yep, it had sold 8mil as of 1.5 years after launch and they (internally) considered it a failure.

But the game was good, it's still frustrating to see how they've left it along the roadside to die while simultaneously going off and acquiring live service game studios... changing times and tides, I guess.

Hopefully they let Bend go off and do something creative, something like a Syphon Filter remake/reboot.

Knushwood Butt651d ago (Edited 651d ago )

Currently playing Days Gone.
Finished my third run and now only two gold medals left in the challenges before I get 100% trophies.

Well over 300 hours into that game. Yes, I like it! May go hunting for 100% collectibles after I beat the challenges.

Great game, great numbers for a new IP. Well deserved.

ClayRules2012652d ago

Well deserved indeed. An amazingly beautiful game, with some great, fast and brutal combat.

Is it ridiculous that I wanna see some hand to hand combat/footwork in there? Have Donnie Yen come in and Mocap some stuff and maybe play a character? Just a thought haha.

ApocalypseShadow651d ago

It's not ridiculous. Sucker Punch should do a martial arts IP similar to the style of Ghost. I've mentioned that a while back.

ClayRules2012652d ago (Edited 652d ago )

Alright, that’s it. Dishonor. Dishonor on your whole family. Dishonor on you. Dishonor on your cow!

Jokes aside, you really do need to finish the game, so great!

Bathyj652d ago

As soon as you said dishonor I was reading it in Eddie Murphy's voice.

ClayRules2012652d ago

@Bathyj
😂love that. Good ole Eddie Murphy as Mushu.

I would be on it. Especially if they change up the gameplay to differentiate from first game. Loved the first.

Currently enjoying Rise of Ronin.

blackblades29d ago

Both have different gameplay but it amazes me how people kept comparing just because they both are samurai. Seems kinda ...... that im not gonna mention.

Cacabunga29d ago

Bend studios making a gaas game and getting lot of negative comments abt that direction.
I hope these stay faithful to making amazing SP games..

Demetrius29d ago

Definitely getting ronin soon, I'm on my 2nd playthrough of GOT on ps5 this time🔥

-Foxtrot30d ago

Probably my most anticipated to be announced

I hope Jinns story continues and we get way more stealth tactics like dragging bodies away and the like.

Lightning7730d ago

I fully expect this game to be announced. Late 2025 release perhaps.

Either way I can't wait for its announcement at Sony's showcase.

Friendlygamer29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

I'm hoping for more complex interior level design for stealth gameplay and also a more complex stance system that's more than rock paper and scissor for each enemy type

RhinoGamer8829d ago

I have stopped pre-ordering games since Cyberpunk 2077 fiasco...this is a game I will make an exception for...

Sucker Punch's open world epic stands head and shoulders above the most recent game that takes inspiration from it.

Ghost of Tsushima is one of my favorite games all time. Hard to live up to that. Not all games are going to be equivalent to some of the best games ever and that’s ok. It is a natural comparison though

Killer2020UK30d ago

Totally agree, as a jaded gamer well into his 30s I didn't think games could hit like Ghost it Tsushima did. I actively avoided story missions in order to pursue every single side quest purely because I didn't want it to end. I wanted to be immersed in that world for as long as it lasted.

JangoMan28d ago

I hate open world games. Its clutter and fatigue. Except GoT.. I completed every thing before going into next main mission. The feeling of playing the game was.... I cant explain. It was perfect

raWfodog30d ago

My favorite jaw-dropping moment was obtaining the Ghost stance. Epic.

JangoMan28d ago

Agreed. Its the dream come true for fans of Samurai and Japan feudal age.

Andrew33630d ago

Got was good but super repetitive.

Juiceid30d ago

Arguably every game is repetitive.

Rise Of The Rōnin review - Ghost of Nioh - Metro

An enjoyable counterpart to Ghost Of Tsushima, with some truly excellent combat, but the bloated open world elements can often suffocate your enjoyment.
