Final Fantasy XV Sales Surpass 10 Million Units

Final Fantasy has been in the spot light frequently; notably for the huge success of Final Fantasy 14's latest expansion, Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, as well as the exciting news that Final Fantasy XVI is in the final stages of development. Adding to the positive news, @FFXVJP announced via Twitter that FFXV has officially surpassed 10 million units sold globally, 6 years after release.

ABizzel1710d ago (Edited 710d ago )

"The livestream also announced that total sales for the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, which includes the 2013 release of Tomb Raider, as well as Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, have reached 38 million units worldwide." from

Wait a minute.....So.....a main series FF "their biggest IP", that had been in development for 10 years, and released across multiple platforms, with 6 years of sales, only ended up having equivalent sales to Tomb Raider, a franchise which Square often labeled as having disappointing sales.....and there's not public shaming of the sales of this game from said company....????

10 years of development + 6 years of sales = 10 million copies sold crickets. Yet within 9 years of sales the Tomb Raider reboot released 3 games and generated 38 million sales and each release was considered "a disappointment". It's good to see Tomb Raider go to a publisher that hopefully will uplift and elevate the franchise.

Lexreborn2709d ago

Well if you look at it that way then you should add the numbers of FF14, 7 remake, strangers of paradise and 15 together. It would be different if you weren’t using a collection of games of a franchise versus one game added in a franchise.

ABizzel1709d ago (Edited 709d ago )

You clearly didn't comprehend what was being said because that reply is completely illogical in regards to what was said.

FF15 sold 10 million copies. Each of the Tomb Raider games individually sold 10 million copies or more....EACH. Which is how the 3 games combined sold 38 million copies and counting (an average of 12.7 million copies for Tomb Raider game in the reboot). Yet those games were still publicly stated by Square as an underperforming franchise. Yet an installment of one of their biggest Franchise across multiple platforms sold 10 million copies in the same ballpark like the Tomb Raider games which weren't in development for 10 years individually, and there's crickets.

Lexreborn2708d ago (Edited 708d ago )

@Abizzel1

Nah, i comprehended fully what you were saying. You aren’t comprehending what I am saying though. That’s pretty clear, tomb raider initial reboot released on ps3,360 and PC, got a remaster for ps4, Xbone and PC. That’s 6 releases for 1 of the titles in question. Heck rise of the tomb raider even released on 360 as well as ps4 and ps5. So that’s also a cost that’s not factored in.

So even if you were to use tomb raider as a whole that’s FF15 released on 3 platforms 10 million. tomb raider 1 released on 6 platforms with your 12.6 million average which doesn’t actually fit by the way.

ABizzel1708d ago

YOU REACHED HE!!@ hard with that 😂😂😂

Tomb Raider: 14.8 million copies
Shadow of the Tomb Raider: 11.8 million copies
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 11.4 million copies

You can spin this as much as you want until you're as dizzy as Square. But that same dizzy spin also puts it back on FF15 being released during an era where spending on gaming was at an all-time high, with PC engagement also higher than it's ever been, and it was still outsold by ALL 3 of them. Not only that Shadow of the Tomb Raider was released 2 years AFTER Final Fantasy 15, and reached 10 million BEFORE Final Fantasy 15.

And I know you weren't trying to say or alluding to it costing more to port games across multiple platforms, when in comparison FF15 has had A DECADE of development, marketing, budget, and all the other expenses endured to get a single game out.

You should have just stayed mute with your first point and let it be assumed that you just misread instead of coming back here doubling down with this dizzy post. Yes, the other games were released on dual platforms because they first came out in 2013 when the PS360 era was ending and the PS4/XBO era were starting. Platforms that FF15 was originally supposed to be released for as well, but again was in development crisis from 2006 - 2016. In that same decade Tomb Raider rebooted, release 2 games across all those platforms, and had the final game in the trilogy in development.

Lexreborn2707d ago

Abizze1 it’s funny how you are alluding that I am the one spinning things when in reality I’m not. Fact is Square Enix… the owner of the properties that you are screaming about. The publisher who has the numbers both financially and physically is telling you.

Final Fantasy 15…. At 10 million copies over 6 years. Made more money for them then tomb raider franchise did. The fact you can’t under stand this is your problem not “my spin”.

If out of 14 million sales of tomb raider the majority of its sales were at 20-30 bucks. But over half of final fantasy 15 sales were at 60-80 bucks(throw in the deluxe editions at initial sale) because we know FF15 did 5 million initially. Then that means at best half of the sales of final fantasy 15 vs tomb raider reboot 1 across 6 platforms would have made 3-4 times more then tomb raider did before any sales hit.

You are trying to fight a case for a franchise that’s already been decided on and sold. You are the only person confused and spinning in circles trying to figure out an answer right in front of you.

I think initial sale makes the most money. if a game is sold on constant sales under $20 for example then it will make the numbers bigger but money wise company gets less money than estimated. I suspect initial sales of FF XV were pretty good compared to Tomb Raider series...

https://www.polygon.com/201... "FINAL FANTASY XV day one shipment and digital sales exceed 5 million units, becoming the fastest selling game in the history of the series!"

Tomb raider sales (VGChartz, I know its not credible but it's the only site we have): https://www.reddit.com/r/To...

rlow1709d ago

Way to break it down. I don’t understand their logic either. But now that they sold Tomb Raider they’ll be missing out on some good sales.

Metabeard709d ago

Its not as good as 14, but it kicks the ass of 12, and 13 by a huge margin.

pietro1212709d ago

FFXII was nothing short of amazing despite it not fully being the directors vision. FFXII is easily a top 5 FF title. XV was a good game despite the issues and development hell it went though, but it’s no where on the same level of Final Fantasy XII. Put some respect on Yasumi Matsuno’s name, the greatest writer and director Square ever hired

shinoff2183708d ago

I played ff12 back when it first released and didnt play long. Ive recently tried to play it again after getting the zodiac edition on ps4. I cannot get into it for some reason. Im just not feeling any of the characters and gameplay or something. I ended up playing ff9 instead after beating that going to ff8

BrainSyphoned709d ago

12 and 13 I at least finished. 15 I went fishing and did some monster hunts.

Outlawzz709d ago

Never played 13 but 12 ?? Wt are you smoking ? Does not compare at all lol

andy85709d ago

It's nowhere near 12 and I really liked 15. 12 is a masterpiece

pietro1212708d ago

Nice to see a person that has taste on here. Haha

Thats pretty sorry if you ask me...

pietro1212709d ago

For a Jrpg that’s not Pokémon that’s impressive

shinoff2183708d ago

ff7 did it when gaming wasnt as huge as it is today.

pietro1212708d ago (Edited 708d ago )

Yeah, it was one of the few.

CrimsonWing69709d ago (Edited 709d ago )

I’m literally playing this now and it bums me out how negative reactions are to this game. I actually think it’s brilliant and haven’t really played anything quite like it. It’s like they had all these small ideas and threw them in a pot to make this game. I’ll admit the story, in parts, is disjointed and not told exceptionally well, but the chill vibe you get from this game and awesome world is pretty impressive.

I’m having fun trying to get all recipes, fill out the bestiary, going on hunts, fishing, finding components to upgrade my weapons to be OP for where I’m at in the game, looking for all Noctis’ weapons, and a ton more. I just love how low-key it is and I’m glad we got something like this, and this is coming from a fan who pretty much only liked 6-9 the best. Although, I think the FF7 Remake is incredible, so there’s my gauge for FF enjoyment.

Lexreborn2709d ago

I loved final fantasy 15 and enjoyed how much they were improving on the game even after development. My only gripe is I wish the dlc content would’ve been apart of the game vs in its own hub.

enkiduxiv709d ago

It had potential, but that game was a mess at release. They just chopped out huge chunks of the plot to sell as DLC or spin into films and anime series. Story made almost no sense at the time and I bet even now with the DLC patched into the Royal edition it isn’t as good as it would have been if they had just let the Devs tell a complete story.

God I hope Sony (or anyone really) buys Square and gives all of the executives the boot. They are just the worst.

andy85709d ago

Same. It was rough around the edges on release but I played the Royal edition and its honestly great now

BrainSyphoned709d ago

Excited to see a lot of YoshiP fashion in the near future.

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled11d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?

Final Fantasy XV Review – A Royal Road Trip

Gary Green said: With my fondness for (most) Final Fantasy games and my side goal of finishing off games in my collection with loose ends, a return to Final Fantasy XV seemed inevitable. It also serves as my third Final Fantasy platinum trophy after VII and VIII, a reasonable substitute since Final Fantasy IX is nigh on impossible to master.

Final Fantasy 15 director reveals why he left Square Enix, and announces he's working on 2 new JRPGs

Final Fantasy 15's director has revealed why he left Square Enix back in 2018.

Hajime Tabata famously resigned from Square Enix two years after Final Fantasy 15 shipped in 2016. In a special livestream at the time, Tabata announced his decision to resign from the company, cancelling three of four new story-focused DLC episodes for Final Fantasy 15 in the process.

FF15 is like FF13 its subjective people either like it or hate it.

raWfodog143d ago

I liked it. I haven’t played the royale edition yet but I’ll get around to it one day.

gold_drake143d ago

no no, 15 wasnt trash.

15 had a tremendous difficult development.

FinalFantasyFanatic141d ago

I really believe 13 was better put together and more complete than 15 ever was.

EternalTitan142d ago

Found the pathetic troll.
How is your jobless life going?
Dot worry, you will never get a job or a girlfriend haha!

Hofstaderman143d ago

Man inherited a train wreck and was expected to release this game in under two years after it spent a better part of a decade in development hell. At one point there was even plans to make FFXIII Versus a musical. He did what he could.

TheColbertinator143d ago

I didn't care much for XV and I always wanted the original vision of Versus XIII but I think the dev team did what they could to salvage the project

Inverno142d ago

And yet people still blame him for the game turning out the way it did, rather than SE for the horrible mismanagement of 13 and Namura for being overly ambitious.

Dwarrior143d ago

Whatever the behind-the-scenes went on over the many years, at the end of the day it was a radical change in direction that I could not go along with. Also why I never bought 16.

gold_drake143d ago

this is also why Sakaguchi (spelling) left.
