The PlayStation Brahs:
"Playstation Now will soon cease as exist as it combines with PlayStation Plus to be one super subscription, titles that won't carryover to the PlayStation Plus revamp will begin to leave the service in May."
PlayStation dominated cloud gaming users throughout 2021, beating Microsoft's xCloud streaming by over 10%, but Xbox swings back at PlayStation in 2022.
“Good competition” is not something Microsoft offers often. You should want THEM to feel enough heat to actually do better.
Agree. I wish sony would be more afraid of gamepass to get better games on ps+
"You should want THEM to feel enough heat to actually do better."
Phil Spencer started to acquire studios back in 2018, after that, Xbox Studios only had 5 studios. Now Xbox has 23 almost 5x more studios. Not to mention third party exclusives like Flight Simulator, Contraband and Project Dragon.
Plus, unlike Sony, Xbox Studios won´t be distracted with things like VR, all of their first party efforts goes towards Xbox first and foremost.
Sony so can expect a much more robust Gamepass in terms of first party and third party exclusives games from Xbox from now on.
Since Sony have less studios and won´t release their games day one on PS+, they better make sure andl deliver high quality games like Ragnarok. Because so far, 2023 hadn´t started well for them with Forspoken.
https://www.videogameschron...
Sony spent millions to secure a AAA third party exclusive game build from the ground up for PS5, not to mention more millions spent on market to be outperformed by a AA game which costs less than half on Steam, had an EPIC day one surprise announcement AND release with ZERO money invested on promotion and marketing.
If that´s not good competition, I don´t know what it is.
"It isn’t."
Oh yes, it is. You can bet your life that both companies cares about their money and investments.
The simple fact that Sony continues to pay multiple publishers to keep games out of Xbox forever, is nothing but a reaction to Gamepass.
Imo, Sony now fears that once their timed-exclusive contracts ends, those games will be available on Gamepass the moment the said games hits the Xbox platforms.
Sony fears the scenario where gamers realize that it´s not worth to invest in every single game released on Playstation at full $70 once they´ll be getting it for "free" on Gamepass eventually, just like Yakuza, Dragon Quest, Octopath Traveler, Nino Kuni, Persona series and more.
ARK 2 (exclusive on Xbox consoles), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2( exclusive on Xbox consoles), Flintlock, Wo Long, Atomic Hears, Lies of P, Eiyuden Chronicle, Hollow Knight: Silksong. Minecraft: Legends, MLB 23...
Those are just some of the games that Xbox players will be getting for "free" day one while Playstation gamers will have to pay for all of it.
So at least you´re rich or something, Xbox players will be getting way more NEW games to play than you. That´s just facts.
@Obscure_Observer
I can bet that one company brings actual competition, isn’t afraid to share losing numbers, and doesn’t buy huge publishers due to said weaknesses. That’s what I can bet.
As a fan of theirs, you should want them to do better and offer more than subscriptions services and unfulfilled promises.
@obscure. Well Sony can't control 3rd party games quality, but their 1st party certainly trounces MS's. Spiderman 2 is going to a absolutely dominate the holiday season, just like ragnarok did this past holiday season. Sony easily has the best gaming studios out of the big three. It's.not Sony who has to worry about their 1st part output, it is MS.
@Obscure: what AAA games would I buy an XsX today to play?
I own a ps5 and XsX, and I don’t know of one game that would have motivated me to buy an XsX ( I bought it to appease my dumb Xbot friends).
I bought a ps5 for Demon Souls (best looking game on consoles), Returnal (top 10 game of all time for me), and Dualsense upgrades for shooters (completely changes R6 for me).
So, can you illustrate how XsX is competing? I liked HiFi Rush a lot, High on Life too, but neither make we happy about the $500 I sunk into the hardware to play them.
Obscurer, you're saying an awful lot without talking much sense at all.
VR isn't a distraction, neither does it take games away from playstation. Sony have been building and harnessing studios just for this while working on their 1st party none VR titles.
Microsoft is fully committed to gamepass and that's fine for them and those that like to game that way. It will be an even better product if Microsoft can nail their 1st party games.
What I'd hate to see are more moves like the Activision and Bethesda purchases and attempts because it destroys the gaming ecosystem. I'd say the same for Sony as well because once the ball is rolling, they'll all start buying and diving gaming.
"I can bet that one company brings actual competition, isn’t afraid to share losing numbers, and doesn’t buy huge publishers due to said weaknesses. That’s what I can bet."
Unfortunately for you, MS or Nintendo aren´t forced to play by yours or Sony´s rules. Fyi, Sony used to buy publishers back in the day. The only reason they aren´t doing it now is simply because they can´t.
As it is, Sony already owns 14.09% of Kadokawa´s shares while Tencent acquired 16% of the company's shares, which means 1/3 of the entire company ownership.
The only reason why Tencent owns more than Sony is because Sony couldn´t pay more for it. So spare me from this "victim complex" bs defense for Sony.
Phil acted as the "nice guy" for too long. To the point where stupid fanboys were all happy when Xbox acquired new studios and publishers, because the idiots were under the illusion that all future Xbox games would become multiplatform and be released on Playstation.
Yeah, they were stupid to the point of thinking that MS would turn into a third party developer for Playstation.
Reality hits hard and here we are. Now that they KNOW those games aren´t coming to Playstation, all that they can do now is cry and moan over games paid and developed by Microsoft to not be on their platform of choice.
They think they´re entitled to have anything and everything otherwise it´s not good competition.
Phil Spencer won´t stop. Be the Activision/Blizzard deal approved or not, he can just go after a single studio like CDPR for example and you´ll be here crying all the same.
I don´t care if Sony or Nintendo buys SquareEnix, From Software or even SEGA tomorrow. Because I have no problem buying products from those companies if they have the games I want. I care about games first and foremost. So don´t expect me to be on your sad place complaining about big a$$ companies running their business as they see fit.
"You should want THEM to feel enough heat to actually do better."
But when they do attempt to do better ppl complain about it.
With the whole Bethesda thing. There was article on here not too long ago talking about how Bethesda investment will pay off for MS. The whole comment section everyone was whining about how MS was taking games away. So when MS competes everyone here complains on here. No matter what MS hurts feelings. It's quite funny actually.
@Lightning77
In other words, outside of publisher acquisitions, they have not really attempted to compete.
And "whining" happens on both sides, so I hope you are just as entertained when people bitch and moan about moves Sony makes.
Ps+ extra already has better games than gamepass. Just look at the highest scoring games...ps extra has more of them.
Lol. What a joke.
PS+ relies on old games. Gamepass not only has day one first party games but also day one third party as well. Even from Sony. XD
Exactly. “Day one” is a buzz word that makes these guys think they have a better line up but it has not amounted to much. If you look at what they have at any given time on their service its not that rosy. Not to mention “day one” also exists on PS plus just not for the first party AAA story games (which is fine w me as long as they continue making the hits).
Check out their list of day one releases for all the years they had gamepass. Its a joke.
@obscure
I'd take good old games then new Bad games. Besides that wasn't his point and that has nothing to do with what I claimed. The op said that they should offer better games but they already offer better games. He did not say new games. Or even New Quality games. But to your point, I know that game pass lovers do enjoy their day one bad or mediocre games. It's all about value with you guys and not quality
Some are going ape shit over Hi-Fi Rush but completely forgot about the Tokyo Wire dud the same developer last released. My point being there are hits and misses.
" It's all about value with you guys and not quality"
Lol. Your false narrative didn´t aged well.
All Metacritic scores for day one first party games
.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps 92 on Metacritic
Flight Simulator 90 on Metacritic
Forza Horizon 5 92 on Metacritic
Halo Infinite 87 on Metacritic
Grounded 85 on Metacritic
Pentiment 87 on Metacritic
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition 87 on Metacritic
Hi-Fi Rush 88 on Metacritic
And that´s only from first party games/IPs on Xbox series consoles.
So much for your "quality vs quantity" BS narrative.
Oh, and we "Gamepass Lovers" also love old quality games as well. I also can give you a large list of high quality third party on Gamepass. Just ask. ;)
@Obscure_Observer… Forspoken was not a 1st party game from Sony nor should it be treated as such. Square Enix will comeback nicely with FFXVI I’m sure.
Besides Sony is entitled to some misses here and there because they actually take chances on new titles and release them regularly.
Bu the time Spiderman 2 releases everyone will have forgotten all about this terrible start you’re claiming.
They're so anxious to try to nail Sony on something that they'll even bring up third party developers not under Sony. Oh look this time's exclusive that wasn't developed by a Sony studio was bad so Sony doesn't know how to do good games.
"@Obscure_Observer… Forspoken was not a 1st party game from Sony nor should it be treated as such. Square Enix will comeback nicely with FFXVI I’m sure."
In no moment I said it´s a first party game. Both Forspoken and FFXVI are exclusive Playstation 5 games which Sony invested large sums of money to secure to their platform. Just like the original Spiderman from Insomniac. (which till this day Sony fans treat it like a first party/IP)
So it´s pretty obvious if the game fails, Sony also fails and loses tons of money which could had been invested on first party games.
"Besides Sony is entitled to some misses here and there because they actually take chances on new titles and release them regularly."
True.
"Bu the time Spiderman 2 releases everyone will have forgotten all about this terrible start you’re claiming."
Also true. The same can be said about FFXVI, imo.
"The leader, Nintendo, doesn’t care what the competition does."
Couldn´t agree more
The Switch is leading the PS5 because it launched three years prior. PS4 won last gen is all forms (money made, units sold, software totals).
No hate for Nintendo though, as they are another company who actually puts out quality games in high numbers, but just a little perspective.
“In 2022, Microsoft took the lead with 60-70% of total MAUs”
From 20-30% up to 60-70%? That’s some crazy growth. Probably thanks to Fortnite.
All the other stats dont matter. Especially the ones where ps is tearing xbox a new one
“In 2022, Microsoft took the lead with 60-70% of total MAUs”
Probably one of reasons why Sony won´t return Activision´s calls.
Oops, somebody didn't read the article.
This isn't a "YoY increase". It's market share, so we know they had 60-70% of the streaming market.
That’s why we game: to celebrate YoY growth!
Three cheers for first-party content-starving fueling third party max’s and subscriptions.
What a clickbait headline. Why mention 2021, when the tides turned in 2022 for the obvious reason of one company making the Cloud service one of their biggest marketing pushes throughout the entire year while the other company was able to promote the games they had coming out?
And it's imprudent to suggest crazy growth when we only know proportions - did Xbox grow its proportion by attracting from the competitors' bases, did their marketing pay off and attract new users, or did cloud gamers on competitors just not play as much? The MAU figures don't point to shifts as significant as the Cloud proportions do, and Microsoft's lack of raw subscriber numbers that they happily boasted about in 2021 is telling too.
Get PS Plus Premium at half off the price by subscribing to PS Now for 12 months! Sony has pulled the annual offer on PSN, but here are live links offering it for US and UK.
Umm ever consider it will probably just give you the basic ps plus for one year and you will need to upgrade to get the premium one?
No, I believe Sony stated that existing PS Now subs would be converted to PS+ Premium subs.
they confirmed that PS NOw Subs would convert into Premium. So essentially pay $60 now and come June u get PS Plus, and all the other perks in premium at half the original cost
For us here in Aotearoa PS+ Premium isn't going to be available straight away so we will have the deluxe version of it instead
You can ignore the fact they literally specified PS Now users will get converted to premium at no extra cost lol
They could give it to us for a dollar to get those numbers up before it launches.
Just kidding.
Microsoft has been way more desperate than that. All you have to do is let your subscription lapse and you can sign up for $1 again.
They've had countless promos giving away free weeks and months with all kinds of crap (cereals, poptarts, drinks, chips, candy).
You think that's desperation but it's how you get people hooked on your service. Once people have it for a while they're going to want to keep it. I don't know a single person that has a game pass subscription that has let it lapse. I've been out of my free zone for about 6 months now. I keep finding the 3 months cards for 20 bucks so every time I see that deal I buy 2 or 3 more more. I'm sure Sony will have some promos for their service too.
There's a difference between a free/discount trial for new subscribers vs letting a user let their subscription lapse and then immediately sign up for the free trial again.
No subscription services do that except GP.
Everyone you know has signed up for GP and then never let it go? Ya right. They'd have 100 million active subscribers if that were true.
Don't let the link open in the app, it doesn't work. Open it in a web browser and it will work
The link in the article goes to a page that says "Not available for purchase." When I click on the link from the Twitter post, it works though. https://twitter.com/Wario64...
Good catch. I even almost went ahead and did it, but I question if I really, truly need any more games to play than I already have lol. I tend to kind of underutilize subscription game services.
At the end of the day, it's $60 for PS+ essentials to play online multiplayer anyway. So may as well stack up on this and get access to the games for nothing more.
See theinidarmy post above, clicking the link from the tweet actually does work. So if you're interested, give it a shot.
Well.....I'm set until 2026 😅 I was a PSPlus subscriber and also joined PSNow every now and then.....so for me paying $60 per year now and hopefully getting Premium for the next 4 years sounds like a great deal.
Hopefully the service will deliver.
So the premium is for the 340 retro games? I have a ps3 and about all exclusives already. BUT if the frame rate or resolution increase on the ps5/pc then I would def get it.
Are the old games improving to 60fps? Or 4K?
Should be a cheap option for ppl who don't want PS+ games and only want to use play MP.
PS plus is 60 bucks and PS now is 60 buck So you are paying the same and doing sooner and not getting of the kickbacks !
But you can stack. So right now I may have PS+, but that's going to expire within the year. I can get this deal and stack it for $60/yr and then that will also cover all my future PS+ for the same price. Now I'm good for both until 2025 at $60/yr save for this year where I've paid $60/yr for each.
PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now come together; players can choose from three flexible options.
So it is true…
Definitely getting Plus Premium for the PS1 PS2 and PSP games. Can’t wait.
PS Plus Extra will have some older triple-A first party and third party titles like 'Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal'.
Miles Morales will be on the service 19 months after its first release so perhaps this gives an indication of the window that Sony's first-party games will turn up on it.
@VenomUK
Jason Schreier & co. already explained what the Sony's PS Plus revamp was going to be when they broke the news way back in December.
Here's he reiterating it again:
https://twitter.com/jasonsc...
I love it. This way we can try out, choose to purchase, and if not play games about a year after (sooner even?)if we missed them. AND it does not affect the quality of the games produced. Its the perfect balance. We can protect the single player story driven games by allowing purchase based model to continue while getting the benefit of trying everything out before buying, and even get a chance to still play what we missed down the line.
Its awesome direction imo
I think the service is an improvement for those who were using PS+ and PSNow, but it's not quite where it needed to be IMO based on where the competition is and what is to be expected at this point. They didn't need Day 1 AAA first party, but PS3 emulation / download should be there, the annual price is great but the monthly is off, EA Play????, and a few other things.
We'll see what the line-up looks like, and if any more changes come prior to June.
Isn't the fact that they mentioned the higher tier having God of War redundant since it's already in the PS+ Collection in the basic tier? Thought that was really silly.
This is crap, anyone supporting this is clueless. Majority of PS3 games online functionality was shutdown, you're paying to play the single player only. They need to reactivate the online functionality. This is why I skipped ps now. Majority of my favorite PS3 games I played mainly the online. Also, why can't they do physical backwards compatibility? I understand their PS3 excuse, but ps1 and PS2? Now it makes sense why they keep shutting down psn store on older devices. I swear, I hate the fans that are hyping this up, this is BS. I owned every Sony home console/handheld, but I been getting tired of them since the PS4. Sony's censorship, hardware restrictions, and greed. I hope they learn another hard lesson real soon, like they did during their arrogant PS3 days.
Also, psplus is 59.99. psNow was 29.99. that's 89.98. I skipped it because PS3 was only cloud streaming and no online functionality. Psnow also had PS4 and PS5 games (I believe), and now they are charging you $100 for extra, and 119 for premium? That's a merger with a price hike and you get the same thing as before. Like I said before, the people hyping this up are clueless. This is why Sony is back to their arrogant ways. As I stated before, I hope they learn a hard lesson real soon.
That's a another skip for me.
@Rinxie
When did PSNow go to $30? It used to be around $120 and then dropped to $60 annually many years ago. It was never $30. Even resellers don't sell that low.
This is funny.
So you're complainijg about price when gamepass without gold membership is just as expensive as the extra version which gives you more.
In the article under Playstation Plus Premium benefits.
“ A catalog of beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations ”
Im curious about that as well. I believe they should let you roll over into the closest price matched tier with the option to upgrade if you want.
Sounds like your PS+ subscription will be renamed to PS+ Essential and nothing will change for you.
Yes I'm in a similar spot. I may not upgrade (it depends what PS1 and PS2 titles are available), but it would be nice if they have a system where you could upgrade what you have already paid for (Xbox has a system for this for upgrading Gold to GP Ultimate, I believe).
Premium it is the ability to download ps2-3 games alone makes it worth it. I hope there is ability to buy those games outright with a discount if someone doesn't intend to keep the service long term
downloading PS2 games is the same as it is now. Have they figured out how to play PS3 games locally on a PS4/5 because those may still be streaming.
You can't download PS3 games, those are streaming. You can download PS1, PS2, PSP, PS4, and PS5 games that are part of the service, but not PS3 games.
How is this a good thing? Literally all they've done is merge PS+ with PS Now. They can't even put in the effort to make PS3 games playable on PS5, you still have to stream them. No one subbed to PS Now before, people weren't interested. All they've done is change the name of the service and suddenly everybody wants it? Gamers are even more gullible than I thought.
@porkchop
"Literally all they've done is merge PS+ with PS Now"
And added 400 PS4 and PS5 games to the service.
As well as adding PS1, PS2 and PSP games.
"They can't even put in the effort to make PS3 games playable on PS5"
Is it even doable? I mean if you KNOW it's possible then yes they lack effort...
But if it can't be done then it's simply a case of it can't be done nothing to do with effort (or lack of)
"No one subbed to PS Now before"
I was, just saying.
PS Now already had over 700 titles though, including nearly 300 PS4 titles. PS2 titles were also already available. So basically they've removed some games to replace with PS5 games and add PSP/PS1 games. That's good, but it doesn't change the fact that this is just PS Now. It's not a new service.
As far as PS3 BC, yes it is absolutely possible. If MS could make 360 games playable on XBO through software BC, then Sony can absolutely make PS3 games playable on the PS5 with all its hardware advancements. Hell, on the Series consoles MS even added enhancements like 4K, 60fps, Auto HDR. Sony doesn't have to add enhancements, but they easily could have made the games playable locally. They've just chosen not to.
I know that some people subbed lmao. It was hyperbole. But PS Now only had about 2.5-3 million subs from what I remember. The service wasn't appealing to PS gamers so it really needed a bigger overhaul than this.
"The service wasn't appealing to PS gamers so it really needed a bigger overhaul than this"
What kind of overhaul do you suggest? Obviously Sony isn't willing to put 1st party titles on there day one yet so what else is there?
That's a fair question. Maybe something like the Quests on Game Pass Ultimate. You complete daily, weekly, and monthly quests related to playing games on the service, and you get Microsoft Rewards points. Those points can be used to enter monthly giveaways, buy gift cards, and even pay for the service itself. Sony could even let you save up points to buy actual games and DLC.
Or how about deeper discounts for the games on the service and their DLC? As it stands, your just getting the same standard discounts as regular PS+.
Or something like the Perks on Game Pass Ultimate. They often give trials for different services. I got 3 months of YouTube Premium, a month of Disney Plus, 3 months of Discord Nitro, and just last week I got a month of Paramount+ so I can watch the new Halo show. They also give exclusive in-game skins, weapons, currency, etc. There's monthly packs for PSO 2, Halo, and tons of other games.
There are a lot of benefits to having Game Pass outside of the games themselves. Sony could have taken this opportunity to really add value and features for their customers. I think it's a shame that they didn't. They've just kind of done the bare minimum in my eyes.
Those are good points/ideas. Hopefully they can add some of those overtime to make the service more appealing
The real deal is yearly prices for all. Especially if they get discounted during the days of play event every year as usual.
People who subscribe to PSNow and PSplus are getting a better deal day 1.
cool, so as i already have plus and now, i will get to try out premium. that £24 for a year of ps now was so worth it
Basically yeah, premium is combining those 2 with added feature and essential is just ps+.
I'm glad essential is still the same price. I don't need the streaming etc. and don't want to pay any more than I am. I hope they don't devalue the service by switching over to crappy free games like Xbox did though.
They will.
Gamepass showed itself as a really liked, valuable service, so they basically forgot about Games with Gold.
Sony hasn't exactly been consumer friendly when it comes to their more expensive games, paid upgrade paths, and I don't exactly need to bring up what they tried with Gran Turismo.
I'm liking what they're doing with this service, but it will quickly become something become the only real way to use the service if you expect anything anymore than online functionality; which consoles requiring you to pay for is already a scam in itself.
I would say I just want online, cloud saves, discounts for a lower price but then I probably use sone ps+ featire without knowing it. Besides we all know there sales on ps+ subs so most arent even paying the actual price for the subs and the soon to be new subs
Yeah I'm glad there is a service that is staying the same. Although as we are seeing it isn't stopping people from whining about the existence of an additional service that they don't have to ever use if they don't want to.
@Ted
I love how you rattle on at every opportunity about Sony taking your lunch money, but it's especially amusing when you predict Sony will do something Microsoft did, because Sony's the one that "hasn't exactly been consumer friendly"
Sony didn't start offering Plus subscribers garbage to push Now subscriptions. Sony's got a long way to go before they reach the "give 'em trash and charge 'em double" failed Microsoft approach.
Ya essentials is the same price but with only 2 monthly games now, I'm surprised nobody noticed that one.
Yup glad it’s still the same at least , no ps3 games sadly. It’s basically bundling some of their services together.
Yeah the middle tier price is basically ps+ and now combined if you want the extra ps1/2 psp etc it’s a few quid extra month it’s not all that bad shame don’t get games day1 etc but sure they wont be that far behind, thinking 6-12 months max. Plenty of quality to play through. Can’t wait to see some lists of games to see what they planning.
Also just get some cheap credit…
https://www.shopto.net/en/d...
£90 of credit for less than £78 that’s £12 off the premium membership for me, I also signed Up for ps now again through the store (£49.99, my ps+ Is 33% off for another 21 months 🙌🏻) for another year as they’ll upgrade you to premium that’s another £16 saved (£84 a year for mid tier/£99 for premium) plenty of ways to get that cost down if shop around 😜✌🏻
Honestly theres only like 1 ps3 game I really wanna go back and play every now and then and it's split/second with higher resolution and performance.
for those who have unlimited gaming time, this sounds like a plus (pun intended) but I myself, will stick to Essential too. game time is already a premium for me anyway, there is just no way I can game more than I already am (very little) at least not until I retire from my job in maybe 20 years time.
and for the time being, no 1st party titles day 1 on the service, which means, this is basically just PS Now merged into PS+ as I have thought would have happened sooner.
Damn!! And i wanted to play MGS4. And it looks like i can't download it. Only streaming.
not that bad if you think about it. Just hold on in buying new games and you'll have access to them in the premium pass instead
The premium is close to 160 Australian dollars a year. I mean, thats not bad. Looking forward to it :)
@chrisco84au For countries that don't have cloud streaming PlayStation will offer a reduced variation of PS Plus Premium tier called PlayStation Plus Deluxe.
"PlayStation Plus Deluxe (Select Markets) For markets without cloud streaming, PlayStation Plus Deluxe will be offered at a lower price compared to Premium, and includes a catalog of beloved classic games from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations to download and play, along with time-limited game trials. Benefits from Essential and Extra tiers are also included. Local pricing will vary by market."
People forget that there do be deals alround Black friday so it's even cheaper then.
quite honestly, this is amazing lol.
and here i thought its gonna be more expensive.
ill definitely get the premium one year sub. simply because i always go back and play older games.
and having a huge library of ps4/5 games sounds great to me.
The quantity is quite high. For people not already invested in Game Pass there will be a lot of legacy titles for them to sink their teeth into. But I can't help but feel disappointed at this service at the prices they're offering.
USD - I'd have expected BC titles to be a middle ground at $12/month, then including modern titles at $15/month. They also haven't said if they're going to gatekeep those BC titles in the service, or allow individual purchases. Nintendo showed with it Switch Online that companies can really get away with titles only being accessible in a service...
Tech-wise, there is no mention of mobile cloud streaming either. Xbox is doing it through the browser. GeForce Now is through the browser. Stadia also. PS Plus is an evolution of the first of these services (PS Now), but has the weakest playability despite being up to $18/month.
I have confidence in the latter, pricing is just a disappointment to me, but being able to buy these BC titles... I have this feeling they won't allow it. I hope I'm wrong.
Id be curious to know if they will allow for your already purchased older digital titles (like PS1 & 2) will work on this or do you have to buy them all over again? I bought several back on my PS3 and PSP that I know would be part of this for the PS4/5. I was hoping that a simple patch would allow me to play what i already paid for so i could retire my PS3.
The pricing is not good. You pay extra for backwards compatibility and there are no guaranteed day 1 games. I hate how much PS rips us off because people just take, not as bad as Nintendo though.
I think the pricing should reflect the objective value and competition. I hate to compare it to Xbox and Gamepass because it turns into a bias fanboy flame war but PS5 games are already $10 more that the standard $60. I'm sure many people will have no problem with $10/month (or $18 monthly), but again objectively speaking value isn't there. Gamepass owners know for sure they will get ALL MS published games day 1, on top of that it adds plenty of third party games day 1, includes PC gamepass and cloud streaming on the phone. Therefore it is easy for subscribers to calculate their return, as in if they were planning to buy just two of those day 1 games they have practically covered the subscription cost.
At this point we don't really know how the new catalog will benefit us. There are lots of great classic games that people obviously would love to play, but I think Sony is taking advantage of that instead of providing value with new games. You also have to STREAM PS3 games which is nonsense. I would agree with the pricing if there was guaranteed some objective value, but it doesn't seem to be.
very happy with this. I was planning to buy Returnal and now it will be on the service. Also, this means PS5 versions of games, you didn't get these in PS Now. Shame about PS3 games still being streamed but I wasn't holding much hope they would be emulated. So for the price of 1 ps5 game £70 and £30 PS now, you get all access. (plus there will be offers and discounts)
Yeah I am totally down for it! It's a really great value and I'm glad Sony is jumping on board this ship. There are still some big exclusives that I'll buy day one, but knowing that eventually they will come to the service gives me peace of mind that I'm not missing out if I don't buy something on day one. Having been a game pass subscriber since day one I can absolutely see the value of this and this is going to save gamers a ton of money I only hope PlayStation fans embrace it the way Xbox fans have embraced game pass.
Buy 3 years of PsNow and they will convert it to premium. Like for like.
Just' sayn
My thoughts exactly.
Only $60 more a year for the top tier isn't bad. I would have went for the mid-tier option, but if it's only $20 more a year, I'll cough up the extra $1 and change each month.
Even if it doesn't have day 1 releases, I'm ok with that. I've barely played any on Game Pass, and I'm just now getting to the PS4 Uncharted games. Returnal will definitely be the first thing I download though.
Gotta give Sony their flowers here. $100 a year for PS Plus Extra is a DAMN good deal. Despite no Day 1 games, thats very compelling….and I’m an Xbox guy.
Yeah it's pretty great deal honestly. Don't know why there's disagrees here! I'm really happy they included the game trials I hope they at least have 5 to 10 hour trial for all new release exclusives. Honestly a lot of PlayStation games are niche. Returnal for example I heard all this great stuff about it and so I went and spent 50 bucks on it and I just don't like it. Had I played a trial I would have seen it's just not my type of game.
@unself not the craziest returnal game play I've seen lol but still pretty good. Add me jaydubdoesit1 if you wanna co op sometimes
"PS3 games available via cloud streaming"
Lost me right there. Sorry, but I'm not paying for a service that forces me to stream games. That's just the long and short of it. Sony you've had plenty of time to get this figure out! How disappointing. I'll just stick with Essential.
Yep, this is the most disappointing part. I love PS1 and PS2, but PS3 was my favorite gen. It's extremely disappointing they haven't figured out how to run these games natively. I know it's not possible on PS4 because the CPU is barely better than the PS3 CPU, but on PS5 I thought it could work.
If MS could figure it out with the 360 games, then Sony can figure it out with PS3. I truly believe that. It's just something that MS thought important enough to invest the time and resources in to make happen and Sony hasn't. That's fine. If they don't want to, they don't want to. But I'm not paying a yearly subscription to play games on an inferior streaming service. Until the day comes when Sony finally solves this for PS3 games, I'll happily stick with PS Plus Essential.
It's why I keep a PS3 hooked up. I have several PS1 & 2 classics downloaded to it as well as the plethora of great PS3 games that have yet to receive any sort of remaster attention (Im looking at you Motorstorm). Im surprised they havent worked with the RPCS3 guys on how they got it to work and then made all sorts of improvements to get it working even further. PS5 is certainly more than capable. If PS2, PS1 and PSP games can get coded to work on PS4/5 then so can PS3 (for the 5, not so much the 4).
Yeh ps3 was an IBM designed processor.
Maybe licencing it's tech or delving back into that way of coding just doesn't make sense, especially now with AMD customers.
I'm sure it's not going to be easy. I'm guessing here..
Should be an option to outright just buy PS1/PS2/PSP games.
Also kind of sucks you have to rebuy games you already own. I'm pretty sure MGS1 will be definitely be one of the PS1 games on this service. I rebought this game on PSN 12/13 years ago.
That does seem odd. i mean when a 360 game becomes bc on the XBO/SX, and its one you already paid for (digitally) then you can see it in your library to be installed. That should also apply for digital PS1 & 2 games you may have bought on the PS3. If the games are now supported on the 4/5... they should be in your library as a result of them already being in your purchase history.
If most games are downloadable then I am totally onboard. That's the thing I love about Gamepass a lot, that you can download games.
that's good to know, it was a bit confusing reading the blog, they kept saying streaming and downloads, so makes it hard to know. Especially stuff like this:
"A catalog of beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations
Offers cloud streaming access for original PlayStation, PS2, PSP and PS4 games offered in the Extra and Premium tiers in markets** where PlayStation Now is currently available. Customers can stream games using PS4 and PS5 consoles, and PC.*** "
Yeah until they show the full library and any 3rd party launch day deals this is a no from me. I'll wait and see but for now I'm not impressed
I'm not subscribing if you don't put new ps exclusives day 1 on the service. I dislike having to buy games put them on the service and I'll subscribe.
There is a multi-billion dollar company giving us day 1 exclusives on their service. It doesn't make you entitled to expect the competition to do the same, it's not unreasonable. That's literally how industry expectations are determined, otherwise expecting to pay $2 for a piece of candy is "entitlement". You sound like want Sony to rip off your fellow consumers so the CEOs can have fatter stacks in their pockets when they're already charging almost $100 a game, I dislike you.
@spicelicka
That multi-billion dollar company makes no money from that service and is trying to grow it's popularity so that one day it does have a viable business plan for profiting. That multi-billion dollar companies service is also $60 more expensive because it does not have online access included, oh and it has very poor monthly releases for the online access sub. Oh, and the insane length of time between 1st party releases and the consistent disappointment in most of them doesn't matter just because you get them "free"? So you don't mind the Live monthly games being poor just because they are "free"?
Sony offers an extremely reasonable and good price for multiple solid offerings that are sustainable for business, at cheaper prices. You're essentially buying into a beta service that is just them trying to secure market share just in case they find a viable business in it in the future. Just like the metaverse investments going on. The interest is not a passionate one, but massive corporations that have billions and billions to waste on services under R&D. Imagine the extra $60 a year you pay just for day 1 exclusive access when they typically aren't even worth it.
This is the sort of mindset MS have been trying to instill in to people with gamepass for years, ew I don't wanna buy a game, I want it on my practically for free sub service!
Unfortunately for Jim, he doesn't have the endless mountain of windows/365 money that would cover bleeding money by putting 100-200 million budget games on a sub service day 1.
Hard to hear you over a ridiculous library of Day 1 game and $180 for a year 3 subscription. What kind of idiotic world do we live in where multi-billion dollar corporations giving good deals to consumers is a bad thing.
@spice, not saying that is a bad thing, just responding to a very entitled idiot comment complaing about having to *gasp* actually buy games, I know it's becoming a foreign concept for gamepass stans to actually buy games though.
I will never understand the hype with subscription service and all this GP/PS+ tiers have not changed anything. If it wasnt for requirement to pay to play online on PS I wouldn't pay at all.
PS don't need this subscription shit, with or without it PS have always been massive from ps1-ps5.
Just keep pumping amazing games that's all you need. Switch/ps4 didn't sell over 100m consoles because they pushed subscription to consumers.
Explore games you would not have tried, instant shared library with family and friends, day one games, try before you buy, cloud streaming to try games before downloading. If you couldn’t buy games outright sure it would be a problem. But a sub service as an option sounds like a bonus to me, but without ps3 and day one games it’s not really much of a value to me for PlayStation. I’l keep my tier1 psplus
unless sony gives me access to all of my ps3 backlog on my ps5 this entire debacle seems pointless and is just them putting every previous purchase older fans have done under a subscription to resell it to us and thats just a terrible deal from my perspective.
On Xbox if you happen to have a retro compatible disc you can just put it in your console and play it. So in a sense retro is “free” on other platforms
If you own the game them yes it is, I play Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series on my Xbox Series, I don't pay more for it.
it should be free if you previously purchased it on the very live network service that they are currently attempting to charge you to pay a subscription to stream said games you already paid for.
... I was about to start playing Xenogears on my Vita, maybe soon I will play it on my PS5!!!
a dream come true.
This is good. I’ll probably upgrade to premium for the PS3 and PS1 games alone. I’m glad they are not including day one releases. It looks like it will be at least a year before their first party titles are released on there.
Good thing Essential cost did not change. Though I might try premium, I'll probably eventually go back to essential.
I retain my thoughts about that type of subscription service. I don't like them, I think they can affect the existence &/or quality of content, design, & considerations of would-be non subscription-related games. I hope I'll be proven wrong.
From this article https://n4g.com/news/247282...
Sony's new PS Plus subscription offerings boast online multiplayer access, hundreds of PS4 and PS5 games, streaming, retro titles and game trials. But what it doesn't include, unlike its main competitor, are new first-party games that launch in the service at the same time as they come out at retail.
"We feel like we are in a good virtuous cycle with the studios," explains PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan, "where the investment delivers success, which enables yet more investment, which delivers yet more success. We like that cycle and we think our gamers like that cycle."
So no, they see their services and their premium product ( exclusives ) as seperate from each other as it should be.
All depends on the games.
I'm one of the few who didn't care for PC GamePass because for me, the game selection was weak. Here's hoping that's not the case here.
The game selection for Game Pass PC is not weak, I don't know where you are getting that from. As for what Playstation are offering on pc, prepare to be even more disappointed. All you are getting is that garbage PS Now app that has seen almost zero improvements since they launched it.
Ok...I think GamePass offerings are weak, you think PS offerings are weak.
Good talk.
It did use to be weak, but not anymore, pretty much everything is also coming to PC, there's not much parity anymore.
This is crap, anyone supporting this is clueless. Majority of PS3 games online functionality was shutdown, you're paying to play the single player only. I owned every Sony console, but I been getting tired of them since PS4. Sony's censorship, hardware restrictions, greed. I hope they learn another lesson real soon like their arrogant PS3 days.
I think we get everything except ps3 streaming.
Ps1 and ps2 titles can be downloaded sk im looking forward to that.
Hopefully the streaming part comes at somw point though as id really love to play through metal gear solid 4 again
Did you read the article? I am in the same boat with PSNow in South Africa ( i.e none ) but I found the following interesting
" PlayStation Plus Deluxe (Select Markets) For markets without cloud streaming, PlayStation Plus Deluxe will be offered at a lower price compared to Premium, and includes a catalog of beloved classic games from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations to download and play, along with time-limited game trials. Benefits from Essential and Extra tiers are also included. Local pricing will vary by market."
As Flawless said, everything except the PS3 streamable only games for a lower price than Premium....which is way more than we currently have.
'A catalog of beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations.'.
So if you can download these, it means PS4 and PS5 will have software based emulation for PS, PS2, and PSP?
That's what it says but I have a feeling that's incorrect and this collection of classic games will be identical to what's on PS Now currently with very few PS2 games available for download, the rest being streamed.
That's certainly how it reads... if that does turn out to be the case then many people will have to eat their words. Time will tell i guess, I'm sceptical right now though.
If the PC can have a working emulator from just a couple of guys... no reason Sony cant use it and make it fully working with a butt load of games. RPCX3 i think it is. And I believe it works with discs.
RPCS3 is impressive but it's not even close to being fast, accurate and reliable enough to be used as an official emulator on PS5. It would need to be more or less flawless for that.
It takes excrutiating work, per game, to get a working game. Then excruciating testing and playtests to see each games issues. The Cell worked far different from the 360's processor, even though both were PowerPC. It had a much different architecture. If Sony released Backwards compatibility then guaranteed they'd find out more and more issues from consumers mad about issues that they've found that Sony doesn't want on their plate. I do hope they come up with something but it's like no one tries to understand that software development is not magic or simply having a team of developers at your disposal.
^^I get that but they cant keep making Cell based servers specifically for this. I think IBM has created a Cell emulator... so Sony at least also has the support from the company who created it. But the truth of the matter is they prob just dont want to invest the $$ into making it work. But like i said, even servers get $$ after a while just to keep going and have spares.
I plan to stick with the essential package that I have. I never even bothered trialing PS Now.
Now if the timed game trials were early access ahead of launch dates that would be worth paying the $120 to me.
Not bad actually, it's a shame about day and date not being offered because that is really the main draw to GP.
But the thought of a back catalog of past PS games is definitely a plus. There are definitely times I like to revisit old games or play old games that I never got a chance to play and having the options to do that is great.
Good to see that BC matters to Sony, at least in a sense of offering and boosting more to their library.
You and most of everyone else. The PS2 library alone is collecting dust and is in major need of digitizing.
I mean, it's a step up but, as always, just like when they killed BC and then start selling you remasters, they've found a new way to sell you old content. The service isn't exactly cheap either.
Are they doing anything to update the games, as Microsoft did for free?
Sony hasn't been consumer friendly in quite some time imo, but this is what happens when they can do no wrong in the eyes of their fans.
My question is , I already paid for PS PLUS for the year 2022 , so can I just pay 40 bucks and upgrade to the next tier ????
@Ted the same can be said for original Xbox games on that service Ted. Those titles are multiple generations ago
There's actually a lot of Xbox and 360 games either through Gamepass, or even offered through games for gold.
So unless Sony multiplied the amount they offered over the last few months, I remember maybe a dozen or so legacy titles that didn't require you to stream them.
I’ll stick to playing PS5 games on my PS5, there’s a great library already and I didn’t pay $500 to play old games. We are already forced remasters and remakes as it is, but for those who never played some of these old games I guess it’s added value…is it worth paying more every month? Not imo.
"Games in the Extra tier are downloadable for play" for the second tier.
Interesting.
Premium tier will also have a "portion" of downloadable as well.
I think it's interesting to see how it stacks up because the downloadable content will really be all that counts really. If it's a fraction then that's okay but streaming is still a ways off.
I was fairly interested until i read where it sounds like you have to stream games from ps3 down to ps1. Ps3 games i understand the streaming but the other ones could be downloadable. Any ps3 ps4 game ive tried streaming always takes some kind of hit tobthe picture quality.
Again maybe i read it wrong but if i cant download them im severely disappointed. Also im pro sony all day check my history. So im not just hating.
So their answer to GamePass is having no launch games, but access to old games we probably already played, own, or could buy for $2? Ha.
Isn't that basically what Xbox gamers are doing, playing old games? You have Halo and Horizon.....other than that....old games.
Streaming only for PS3 games...ewww.
WTF..they are charging more for the monthly highest tier than GP: Ultimate monthly. Sony is high right now.
They still charging for limited cloud saves. The PS5 games they included would have come to PsNow eventually, this is not a gamepass competitor, but they charging the same price and more for it.
Sony has been most erratic this gen so far, they seem all over the place, double-talking, pack pedaling, and trying to keep up with MS. This could have been great, but they 1/2 stepped, no day one exclusive, in some cases more expensive, and PS3 game streaming only, retro titles and game demos only in the highest tier?
Thats just the nature of ps3. Ive always heard that cell was a bitch to work with. I personally dont see the ps3 streaming as a big deal cause i felt it was sonys worst. Not bad just worse. Basically im saying ps1 2 4 were the better systems. Ps3 really just seemed way to fps focused hardly no jrpgs aside from a handful if that. Whereas the ps1 ps2 ps4 were fairly loaded. More so ps1 ps2 but you get my point.
Ill decide when i see what will be on there. Thats when ill buy or pass
Do you know ps now was out 3 years before gamepass. You can argue about which has been better but ps now was 2014. Gamepass 2017. Cant argue that
So will ps5 now be backwards compatible with 1,2,3? Cuz I got decades worth of discs and I’m not looking to go beyond the $60 tier.
Nah.
They simply went from cutting BC in the PS3 in favor of remasters to now reselling games via subscription services and paid upgrades.
So essentially they just made what I pay now for ps now and plus separate combined. And added more games, I’m not mad, still cheaper then gamepass
Still doesn’t change it’s cheaper in us then gamepass. It’s 3 months for 44.99 gamepass ultimate and no yearly pass. That’s 180 a year for GP Ultimate to 120 ps plus essentials
I think the real win here is the ability to pay a yearly fee.
If it's 18$ per month (tier3) versus 15 GP ultimate then I'm sorry but GP wins hands down but if it's 120$ versus 180$ then we have another discussion.
Now let's see how this will all work out.
"xbox sucks! who would want to play old games anyway" - every PS fan boy yesterday.
"playstation 1 games and backwards compatibility! Sony's the best" - every PS fan boy today.
You see thats an outright lie. I know theres plenty like me. I picked up a used xbox one for gamepass specifically. Your what they call exaggerating
If the PS1,pS2 and PSP games have trophies.Ill sub if not.im content with my basic
It took them so long to do this, that I've already bought a PS1, PS2, and PS3, plus my favorite games for each console.
Very cool for everyone who doesn't have these consoles though!
Isn't this how it's always been apart from 1 sub not 2 and the added game trials ?
Everyone raving about it yet it's just the same as b4 but combined now yet nobody used it before yet all willing to jump on now ?
Nah. I think it's just to shut people that think Gamepass is the greatest thing ever up.
It was never going to be, but I expected better than just merging the 2 together.
Surely it hasn't took them this long to implement the 2 and on top of that we now pay for long demos.
Extra tier is very reasonable price, for what it is. Premium can't see the point in paying just to stream old games. Premium going to have to show lot more for me to pay that price.
One thing is for certain, Microsoft was very savvy with their Activision and Bethesda purchases. A lot of the Bethesda stuff will likely be exclusive but some of it will still be on PlayStation. Most of Activision stuff will still be on PlayStation.
The differentiator is going to be Game Pass versus PlayStation Plus extra. PlayStation is not going to put their games day and date on their service. That's fine because the audience that is purchasing those games will still purchase those games. However, the biggest game on PlayStation is Call of Duty. Call of Duty will now be on game pass day one but you will still have to pay $70 on the PlayStation 5! Do you really think that average consumer is going to choose to spend $70 on PlayStation when you can get it as part of the subscription on Xbox?
There is no way this does not pay massive dividends for the Xbox brand going forward. All that great IP between their two major purchases will be available on game pass day and date. Even if it is also available on PlayStation, the vast majority, I'd say upwards of 90% of gamers, will choose the Xbox because they can play it on game pass.
Most of the Call of Duty crowd are not buying their own games. When parents know that they can get $15 a month subscription for their kids Call of Duty habit and they don't have to buy a game yearly they're going to do that. This is a lot bigger of a deal than people think. This generation will be known as the one that Microsoft saved the Xbox brand and brought it to the forefront of gaming. I know the fanboys are going to be in a huff over such a claim but I can guarantee you the end of this generation will look much different than the last!
Personally I am a huge fan of the subscription model. I don't give two s**** about how much X corporation is making. I care about getting good games at a good price and both companies are starting to understand that the major barrier of entry to grow the gaming population is cost. You lower the cost you bring in more people you bring in more people you make more money. Simple as that.
Now if both companies could only meet the demand these two new consoles can finally thrive and we can get all the great games that are coming to both of these systems out the door! We need to stop arguing about all this and just enjoy the games. What a time to be alive I couldn't imagine this in previous generations! I feel like a sucker wasting so much money over the years 💯
There is still loyalty to consoles. If a COD fanatic only plays COD for the most part. Paying for it once is preferred to a monthly subscription to things they don’t want. Remember you must maintain that subscription to play COD for “free”. Considering we have all been buying games since the beginning of time, I don’t think this sways many people. Those that prefer one console to the other will still buy that console. Either way this announcement today is a good thing for gamers who want choice.
No one ever said game pass was free. No one ever said they were playing Call of Duty on Game Pass for free. But personally I'm looking at the stack of Call of Duty games that my kids wanted the last 4 years and is $240 worth of Call of Duty games they won't play anymore cuz they want the newest one. Obviously nothing is free. You pay for the console you pay for the subscription you pay for the internet you pay for your housing etc etc etc. Its not free please show me where anybody is saying that game passes free?!
I personally know many families that are going to switch to Xbox this gen because of the Activision acquisition. Families are on a budget these days and most families would happily give up buying the yearly Call of Duty to be able to buy a subscription to Game Pass that's almost the same price they paid for the yearly Call of Duty game! Plus you get all these other benefits. Free Hulu for 2 months free Spotify for 4 months free YouTube premium for 2 months. Etc etc etc.
Nobody likes to talk about the benefits to game pass that don't include just the games themselves. There's a ton of benefits there and PS plus extra should add some of these bonuses as well.
So yeah youll still see some loyal customers to PlayStation that are always going to buy PlayStation no matter what. My point is that the majority of families are more loyal to their wallets than they are any company.
And honestly as a family man Xbox is really where the value is at. My kids don't really care about PlayStation. There's a couple games they want to play like Spider-Man. But they care about things like Minecraft and Call of Duty more and Microsoft is going to be putting Call of Duty on the game pass subscription! Im the hardcore gamer in my house that purchases all the stuff. Game pass essentially subsidizes my PlayStation game purchases and allows me to buy games I wouldn't be able to buy otherwise. So it's all a win for me!
You are going to see a huge shift towards Xbox for much of the rest of this generation because of things like the Activision and Bethesda acquisition. Having those titles day one on game pass is going to be way bigger than you can even fathom right now. Go ahead and take note of this post so in a year or two you can come back to it and enjoy eating your crow.

I highly disagree as call of duty will still be on store shelves for PlayStation and many families don’t want to add another monthly bill to their budgets…and 90% of console gamers truly don’t care about Bethesda. They have always been a PC first dev. There are so many subscription services already embedded into peoples budgets for entertainment. There’s a reason there isn’t a 1:1 tie in for gamepass with Xbox owners. Don’t be dramatic.
Caw cawwww... Lots of crow incoming for you to eat. My family uses lots of free trials and dumps the paid ones in the 'off seasons.' the one sub we have kept around is Gamepass. And that's mostly because the sales where I buy 3-4 3 month cards for 20-25 a pop during Black Friday sales. I know several families that have also bought their Xbox thru the all access program. That includes Gamepass every single month. So 30 a month vs $550 up front for the system (tax) plus $70 per game? That's a huge barrier for many families. Go ahead and bookmark it 😉
Why is it cheaper to go quarterly then yearly? Isn't the idea of yearly suppose to be the cheaper option typically?
I want non of that except access to the multiplayer portion of the games I own without having to pay for a service to access third party servers.
So what is Sony's goal for this service?
- If it aiming for core fans, well most likely they already buy the newest games, so that 18 months 1st party add on seems like a double dipping, if core fan using this service. Though we'll have to wait for what other 3rd parties offerings? Will EA access be added without additional charge?
- if it is for enticing new gamers or FOMO group, well they will be missing out anyways if they have to wait that long for 1st party.
- If it is for retro gamers, why cant they make it so that they can just put in the old discs, which they already own, since obviously you can download them to play (except ps3)?
I'm not really sure Sony intention on this beside repackaging/consolidating the 2 services they currently have.
So I guess it’s pretty safe to say at this stage PS+ ‘essential’ will be going down the pan in quality from this point forward. Well we’ve already seen it heading that way so we knew what they were doing.
That's cool. It seems cost effective depending on the price of games in your region and how important new releases are for you. Obviously I would have loved a first party option, but perhaps that will be something that comes out in the future. We will see.
I wanna play some ps1 games like red alert 2 for sure. Dunno sony giving "free" games every playstation player allready bought. While xbox give 3rd party new games and first party new games as they release. It wont beat the gamepass thata pretty sure. Unless they put new horizon, gow and such on the service.
If they add trophy support and bring back Socom servers I’ll buy 3+ years of premium.
We wanted a GamePass competitor - that is not what we got. We got a simple merging of two existing services, no day 1 titles and back compat via streaming & locked behind a paywall.
SMH. Give us back the old Sony that was for the players. Ryan only cares about the bottom line.
Well it's hardly a surprise when the fan base worships Sony and begs them to take their money.
Yeah, when you really break it down the value for the highest tier just isn't worth it.
Also, the fact that PS5 can do backwards compatibility but Sony chooses not to have it function with native games but instead have it locked behind a paywall should raise concerns among fans.
So it's just a streamlined pricing for PS+ and PSNow. Rather than buying 2 separate services you can now get both but bundled.
So, yeah. Color me underwhelmed. Imma leaving my PS+ alone. Never had an interest in Now streaming (or any game streaming for that matter) since it's garbage, or any retro games. I've already paid and played the PS1,2&3 games I wanted to on their respective consoles. So this has nothing for me. If you're into this kind of thing, go for it, I guess... But that price jump is kinda steep between tiers. *cough*moneygrab*cough*
So now it's 2 games instead of 3? Disappointed to say the least. This is a mere merger. The only feel good addition is the game trial aspect. Still no true BC, I'll pass. Sony is really starting to piss me off.
It's disappointing that PS now is still not available in Australia after all we have cloud and GeForce now so it's not impossible here.
It seems that Sony isn't interested in expanding the PS now footprint I was hoping they would with this announcement.
Microsoft had nothing to "figure out" with backwards compatibility. All of the Xbox consoles use X86 processors and directx, previous generation games just work.
Sony has a MUCH more difficult task in getting BC to work on Playstation as they have used different types of processor over it's history.
PS1, PS2 and PSP used MIPS, the Vita used ARM, the PS3 infamously used the custom built CELL processor and the PS4 and PS5 use X86 (like all Xbox Consoles).
The PS5 is fully backwards compatible with PS4 thanks to both being X86, and it's more than powerful enough to use brute force to emulate PS1, PS2, PSP and Vita.
PS3 though..... that's a LOT more challenging.
Yes PS3 emulation is possible on PC and RPCS3 has made great progress but it still has many, many issues and an official emulator on PS5 would have to be more or less flawless.
Well game pass couldn't keep me subscribed, so I won't be bothering to upgrade past the base PS Plus tier.
It’s just a step closer to Sony adding exclusives day one to be able to compete with gamepass
Yeah no day one games, no third party day one games, no independent games, no Ea play games, and no PC version that lets you play on both pc and your console.
I said it a few months ago and here it is. The ability to play ps1,ps2,ps3,psp etc as long as you subscribe. They want to close the stores and limit your ability to own these games because they see a different type of revenue possibility by locking you into a subscription. All those excuses they made for not having these games available on ps5 were obvious horse sh!7.
So, first Gamepass ist bad for the industry but suddenly this is no longer a problem as Sony now offers something similar?
Doesn't make much sense.
Looks like subscription services are good again. It's hard to keep track. No day and date. No bueno
PSP emulation locally this is a first for Sony on a home console. I hope they use pspp emulator as a base to allow for 60fps and higher internal resolution however I doubt it looking at what they did on the Vita (homebrew community made better BC on the Vita than Sony made on the same console)
Wait, what? I thought PS+ premium would carry over the games from PSNow?
Also this basically leaves MGS4 dead in the boneyard unless you play via RPCS3…
It's actually a lot of games that will leave at the same time.
Probably to leave some space for the PSP games that are gonna be added to the premium service.
As for MGS4, I would expect Konami to be behind the move.
Ah, yes. Bask in the "service" era. Where what you see today, is not what you'll see tomorrow, thanks to an overcomplicated system.
The "service", is simply, off the charts.
So when games leave PS Now, it's a huge issue but when games leave GamePass it's just fine? All subscription services have games / movies leave all the time.
This is why I dislike subscriptions lol.
