Like they say, "vote with your wallet." And we just voted for Sony to rely on third parties more and to invest less in high quality first party single player games.

MadLad802d ago

Horizon is the second best selling game in multiple territories..

JEECE802d ago

Resistance sold well, but always got outsold by COD and Battlefield. Eventually Sony just decided to rely on third parties for FPSs. Obviously this is just one instance and won't change Sony's entire strategy, and maybe Elden Ring will be a once in a generation game, but people just need to be aware that their decisions have ramifications.

MadLad802d ago (Edited 802d ago )

@jeece

Resistance was never a heavy hitter.
The first game sold mildly well, bolstered by being in the PS3s release window where new games, in general, were scarce.
Resistance 2 did just a bit worse. And then 3 did abysmal in comparison to 2.

Did you expect Sony to keep pumping millions and millions of dollars into a series that just did worse with every release; never being a giant seller to begin with?

Army_of_Darkness802d ago (Edited 802d ago )

Look at the bigger picture people! The top 4 selling games are Single Player! That's the awesome and most important part here!

Bladesfist802d ago

What are you on about, people buy the games they want to buy, nobody gives a crap if it's first party or third party.

JEECE802d ago (Edited 802d ago )

If you don't care about Sony making games for their own platform, my comment isn't directed at you.

People do care though. First party games are a big reason people buy Nintendo systems. One of the big complaints on the Xbox One was that MS didn't make enough quality games during that generation. You may not care, but for a lot of people first party games are a big part of the decision of what console they buy.

MadLad802d ago

There's a small group that adamantly do only care about whether a game is 1st party, unfortunately.

Michiel1989802d ago

@jeece, ridiculous logic. sony is making amazing 1st party games, that there come a couple games a year that outsell some of their exclusives is nothing more than normal, especially with such a long anticipated title like Elden RIng. If most 3rd party games start outselling their 1st party then you can maybe say there is a problem, but i dont see that happening anytime soon.

"One of the big complaints on the Xbox One was that MS didn't make enough quality games during that generation." are you seriously argueing sony doesnt put out enough quality titles? Not sure what drugs you are on but send me some, ill pay for shipping.

I care about 1st party games, thats why i would buy x console over y if their exlcusive lineup is better, but that there are games on there that outsells some of their exclusives, i dont see as a negative. It just means in this case From Software stepped up their game and is a great addition to the ps5 library.

The fact that third parties do so well with your platform of choice is a good thing. That means that ultimately you will get more games.

elazz802d ago

If you read the article Horizon, GT7 and Elden Ring are all very close to each other and that is with Elden Ring on 5 platforms and the Sony games on 2. Horizon did beat Elden Ring on the revenue side (for Playstation) so I'm sure any differences in these charts are negligible. Be happy that 3 quality games are ranking and selling so much.

IanTH802d ago (Edited 802d ago )

Exactly this. It would be like saying GTA V sold tons of games on every platform for not one, but THREE GENERATIONS & shown that people only care about old Rockstar games. Sometimes things sell better than others, yet all of them can be a success.

HZD had a long tail with 20 million sales. Good chance this will too. I don't think Sony are crying in their beers & deciding "whelp, our massively popular, profitable, well reviewed game has metrics one notch below a phenomenon. Time to pack it up".

JEECE802d ago

@IanTH

I hope you are correct, but my main concern is that Elden Ring is going to eat Horizon's tail, basically. Obviously it had strong launch week sales (although Sony has been deafeningly quiet about numbers, which is not encouraging since they like to brag about big launches), but I'm concerned it's going to lose a lot of those week to week sales to Elden Ring.

I'm sure it will still sell millions of copies, but if it sells less in its first year than HZD and sells less overall and ends up at 12 million instead of 20, that's probably the end of Horizon and Sony probably shifts Guerrilla to live service games.

Knightofelemia802d ago (Edited 802d ago )

@Jeece

I'd say Horizon Forbidden West is doing very well for an in house first party titles that is under Sony. That's what draws me to a Playstation is the exclusives which help sell and build hype for a system. PS4 had more exclusives dropped on it then Microsoft released on the XB1. Third party titles are selling well because they are on other platforms. And if or when Sony decides to drop Horizon Forbidden West on PC I am sure the game will push some great numbers yet again. Sony doesn't rely on third party titles anybody can play a third party title on Xbox or even Nintendo. The Playstation just dominates because it's a better selling machine it has die hard fans spanning back to the PS1 and new people are buying Playstations who have never owned one.

kayoss802d ago

Having first party games that are exclusive to your console give consumers the incentives to buy said console. You can vote with your wallet all you want when it comes to first party games but we all know that 3rd party games that are released on multiple platform will always outsells exclusive games. However, that doesnt meant that Sony or Microsoft should stop making first party games. If they do stop, there are no incentives to buy one console to another.

frostypants801d ago (Edited 801d ago )

So people shouldn't base their purchase on the games they want more? What a silly statement. Horizon is doing well. Elden Ring is by most considerations a better game so it sold better. Simple as. Sony can combat this by either A) working even harder to make awesome games (let's be honest, HFW is great for those of us who loved HZD but it is a pretty iterative and "safe" sequel) or B) having the sense not to release a high profile title from a respected developer right in front of an even higher profile title from an even more respected developer. People DID speak with their wallets. You're actually implying they shouldn't.

JEECE801d ago

No, I'm just pointing out that voting with your wallet has consequences, and people need to learn to accept them.

Sony put out the PS3 with full hardware BC and people didn't buy it, so they removed it to cut the price. Now those same people whine about the limited BC on PlayStation.

People bought COD or Battlefield in 2016 instead of Titanfall 2, but now they whine about Respawn moving away from the series.

I'm just saying that if Horizon misses it's sales targets and Sony moves Guerrilla to a live service game, I don't want to hear crying from people who didn't buy it. If you don't care if that happens, again, none of this affects you.

Miles Morales still on the list after 16-17 months is insane.

Elden Ring and Horizon is both amazing games and still after Platinum in both of those, I can't chose one of them to be my Goty. This year is already incredible ä.

elazz802d ago

Miles Morales is Sony's third best selling game ever in dollar sales behind only Spider-Man and God of War. And since the game released at a lower price I might even assume it probably surpassed God of War by now. 25 million copies seem pretty much guaranteed by now.

badz149801d ago

Spider-man and Miles Morales will keep selling good numbers until Spider-man 2 arrives next year

frostypants801d ago

This. They don't really gave any peers, gameplay wise, and they're SO well done.

northpaws802d ago

Can't wait to try Elden Ring, but I will still only half way through Horizon, don't want to rush it. And then after Elden Ring maybe Dying Light 2, it might be end of summer by the time I am doing with Elden Ring though

Teflon02802d ago

Makes sense, anyone I know who bought horizon, bought physical outside 1 while everyone but 1 bought elden digital lol. Personally I'd always pick a physical first party title over digital, for 3rd party it depends on if it's a franchise I really love already. Like Trails, Tales, FF etc. Otherwise I'd just buy digital if I'm lazy lol

Elden Ring Killed Gaming For Me & It's About To Do It Again

Saad from eXputer: "Utilizing its myriad strengths and masterful design, Elden Ring ruined gaming for me in a way I'll always be thankful for."

GhostScholar15d ago

It sounds like you’re just an eldenring fan and not so much a fan of games by and large. Which theres nothing wrong with.

RoadRacer14d ago

The author's profile appears to state otherwise. I believe they just got a massive shock with Elden Ring, something that stuck around. To each their own I guess

Crows9014d ago

Elden ring ruined from software for me....maybe.

I hope their next game isn't open world too...

ravens5214d ago

I have yet to beat Elden Ring. Not cause it's too hard , I've beaten Sekiro, Bloodborne, Demon Souls etc. Also I could just make my character op but I prefer to play under leveled. It's too big. I beat Radaghan or the moon lady last then got lost, lost for years lol. I'm going to beat it tho. Haven't played it in a while

Crows9014d ago

I platinumed the game but hated the open world aspect...started great but then after a bit you notice all the repeated dungeons and bosses...it got massively tedious and much preferred late game areas in a typical souls game than the open world repetition.

GhostScholar14d ago

The ole “I’m so good at hard games I had to play under leveled to get challenged and if I worked that hard in real life I wouldn’t be working at Walmart”

ravens5213d ago

? Don't work at Walmart or any type of retail...lol. But w.e. Makes you feel better about ya sad life 🤷🏽 lol. You probably just suck at games lmao.

Aussiesummer14d ago

I loved it but yeah it is just overwhelmingly massive and confusing, I don’t think I’ll ever finish it.
