Report: PS5 Storage May Support Four Different NVMe SSDs Sizes Based on Hardware Breakdown

Options for expanding your PS5 storage could be getting a whole lot bigger, as markings on the SSD slot feature different numbers.

ziggurcat1713d ago

Right now, I'll be using my 8TB external to store my games, and transfer over when I need, but if the price drops down to a reasonable amount, I'll likely add another internal SSD.

gamesftw2501713d ago

SSD prices are still going to continue to fall thankfully. Hoping to pick up at least a 2TB soon.

indysurfn1713d ago

Continue to fall, you mean in general, right? I thought Sony had a new proprietary drive, faster than Microsof'ts. . And it is not out yet but will be 1TB and $20 less than Microsoft's $220 1TB drive? I have not heard of a 2TB drive that WOULD be sweet if they started off with it right off the bat.

Teflon021713d ago

Indy
Sony has a custom PCIe 4 NVMe built into the Mobo but you can use third party cards. This was explained from the start. MS is the only one doing that where you're forced to use custom ones

Ju1712d ago

12 lane internal on board drive. To compensate with (what 4) for gen 4 drives, it is recommended to have at least a raw bandwidth of 7000MB/s to compensate for that. That's the only limitation. PCI 4.0 m.2 m-key with at least 7GB/s read speed. Otherwise standard drive.

FinalFantasyFanatic1712d ago

You can blame the PS5/SeriesX for helping crash the prices of SSDs, I'd love more SSD storage, the prices are just coming down too slowly for my liking.

indysurfn1712d ago

Yep you guys are RIGHT! I was wrong on that one! Sorry! SCREWED UP BIG TIME!

I have 2TB on my PS4, and all this time, I was under the assumption that I could use that for my PS5...

jznrpg1713d ago (Edited 1713d ago )

It’s possible if it has a usb hookup but it would only be for storage and not to play PS5 games . But it’s a new console with a very new SSD why would you think old drive would automatically work ?

excaliburps1713d ago

@jznrpg:

I mean, just assumed that the SSD would be the primary storage, and the secondary one would load slower etc. But yeah, I can keep this just as a back up. No way I can survive with less than 1TB of storage though.

Neonridr1713d ago

@excaliburps - you can only play PS4 / older titles off of any external HD. There is no option to have a game load slower by using the external drive for PS5 tittles. They have to be on the internal storage (or an approved expansion drive connected to the system if the PS5 is built that way).

shaenoide1713d ago

You can use your external HDD to switch game to the SSD when needed.

morganfell1713d ago (Edited 1713d ago )

“... why would you think old drive would automatically work ?”

Because as we have discovered even “informed” gamers did not watch Cerny’s Road to PS5 Presentation where he details in great measure exactly which drives can be used, how, and for what.

https://youtu.be/ph8LyNIT9s...

Ju1712d ago

Supposedly you can play PS4 games from the external drive. So, unless you upgrade those, it'll be perfectly fine (probably must faster, too. 10Gb/s connection (1000MB/sec) is much faster than internal PS4 drive which tops at 100MB/s - so the limit is on HD though put only, but SATA can reach 6Gb/s = 600MB/s). I have a 6TB external drive. Hope I can just plug that in. https://www.gamesradar.com/...

B1uBurneR1712d ago

I think you are confusing ssd with NVMe bro. Question though., why people on here acting like they play that many games at once to fill the NVMe on PS5. Plus if that was the case wouldn't Quick Resume up to 4-6 games make PS5 load speed mute in the sense once the loading is done. That's that. The eye candy relies on cpu and gpu power.... not loading speed.

morganfell1712d ago

"The eye candy relies on cpu and gpu power.... not loading speed."

Actually that isn't true because the PS5 SSD is so fast the "eye candy" is actually affected by the drive speed. The PS5 SSD in conjunction with the custom I/O means you do not have to have possible use items parked in system memory waiting. Because the drive affects how fast assets can be accessed it impacts what can be seen on screen and when.

ballisticvoodoo1712d ago

Really? Then you assumed wrong! Zero was ever said about being able to use your external drive you use on the PS4 on the PS5. Keep it coming Xbox shill.
That's the worst part. You have people like excaliburps that are rabid fan boys. I'll play where the games are at. PS5 for their exclusives and my PC for MS exclusives. Too easy. No need to fanboy rage.

esemce1712d ago

You can for playing PS4 games or storing PS5 ones.

Nitrowolf21713d ago

exactly what I'm gonna do. Hold off for prices to drop on a ssd, I have a feeling they are going to go up this November cause of demand.
Still, should see a sharp drop cause of all the competition for them

1713d ago
indysurfn1713d ago

Yep there will be a LOT of demand.

regarding your last sentence, not sure why you think thre will be competition for them. You have to get a license to make a compatible drive like Seagate is doing and Western digital. They will be the same price of $200...Look at controllers. Prices drop slow when licenses are involved. Don't get me wrong I want you to be right. But don't rush it

Nitrowolf21713d ago (Edited 1713d ago )

@Indy

Your comparing controllers of third party which require licensing for functionality versus a SSD which they can build for PC as they always have that could potentially support ps5. Yes there will be specific ones marketed for the PS5 which will need licensing to do that, but we are talking about buying an offshelf ssd, something we can do with HDD right now. There shouldn't be any licensing they need from Sony period, thTs the whole point of them going with a non proprietary storage solution.

I mean u can Google search a m.2 right now and several different companies will show up. Theres ALREADY IS COMPETITION. This is essentially what it will be for the PS5 once sony releases an approved supported list. This isnt like the Xbox Series where we are gonna have to wait for manufacturers to get Licensing. By the time the PS5 releases there will already be tons of supported ssd to pick from third parties.

1713d ago
Neonridr1713d ago

we still don't know if any NVMe drives on the markett will even work with the PS5. It's possible that the Samsung 980 Pro is the only one that meets the standards. So while they will eventually fall in price, there needs to be more options available first.

BrettAwesome1712d ago

Yes we do, dummy. WD has one that's compatible.

Neonridr1712d ago

@BrettAwesome - that was literally just announced (I hadn't seen that when this comment was made). My apologies for being a "dummy".

Jin_Sakai1713d ago

It’s crazy to think PS5 comes standard with a NVMe SSD that’s literally $229 on it’s own. We’re getting an amazing deal on next gen consoles that’s for sure.

ABizzel11713d ago

This is the best thing to do for the next couple of years until NVMe SSD prices drop to a more reasonable range and offer at least an additional 2TB of storage.

Everyone should be buying an external HDD or SSD this holiday season (Black Friday / Cyber Monday), to store their games on. $50 gets you at least 4TB easy.

sprinterboy1713d ago

I'll likely pick one up year 2 or 3 into the gen and hopefully the price is down to £100 for say a 2tb

Hedstrom1713d ago

The USB 3.2 with 10GB/S transfer speed is going to be awesome for external storage solutions!

Ju1712d ago (Edited 1712d ago )

Ya, and as expensive. LOL. They sell 2TB nvme USB 10Gb/s drives for $300. But those will be awesome. You need an nvme drive to actually reach 1GB/s. SATA tops out at 500MB/s. Unless you are looking at a SATA RAID0 enclosure, which, then again, costs you, Kinda surreal how fast this thing actually is, if you think about it.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen1713d ago

Well the SSD would still need to have minimum read speeds of 5.5 GB/s to be compatible with PS5. I've seen the slot up close from photos and the slot clearly shows the last two digits of these sizes:

2038
2042
2060
2080

ziggurcat1713d ago

Yeah, when the compatible drives with a decent amount of space come down in price, that's when I'll jump on one, I think.

S2Killinit1713d ago

I’ll be waiting on a nice SSD with similar specs to the super fast one inside the PS5. Make it smooth.

pocolocoX1712d ago

The 980 Pro from Samsung is available now.

XBManiac1712d ago

And with better stats than the PS5 one. I wonder how much faster PS5 will be with a Samsung 980 Pro... I think a 15% faster, but it is not cheap, right now. Maybe for end next year, when 8GB/s PCIe Gen 4 NVME without compression will be standard on PC.

1712d ago
purple1011713d ago (Edited 1713d ago )

What is very interesting from teardown is it has the blue USB connectore..meaning USB 3.1 or 3.2...

so if you have an external hard drive that has as USB 3, it will be twice as fast as the usb2 ones on PS4 and Xbox. because even if you are using a USB 3 drive you would be limited by the USB 2 port on the console.

That's just on USB drives. Not on SSD even I'm talking plain old usb passport drives. (Good quality ones such as wdpassport) great news

Hakuoro1713d ago

Yes, PS5 has "SuperSpeed" 10Gbit/s USB support, it's the only console that has that. The. SX is 5Gbit/s.

HICK1713d ago

I didn't catch this spec. Is the 10Gbit/s speed only for the front USB-C port or does it include the back USB 3.x ports too? If you can point me to this info that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Hakuoro1713d ago

HICK,

The PS5 has one front USB with 10Gbit/s and both rear USB are also 10Gbit/s.

Here is the teardown video at the USB explaination.
https://youtu.be/CaAY-jAjm0...

I_am_Batman1713d ago

Why is this even a rumor? We've clearly seen that they support four different nvme lengths in the teardown video. The screwholes are even labeled 80, 60, 42 and 30 which are standard lengths in mm for m.2 drives.

PS-Gamer-19861713d ago

i love that sony is consumer friendly unlike the direct competion with its proprietary ssd's.

Sayai jin1713d ago

The slot is proprietary. MS has stated that they are working with 3rd party vendors sp there will be more options. Personally, I like the PSabolity to add my own ssd later, but also the average consumer will not necessarily no what type of ssd to buy for it.

gerbintosh1713d ago (Edited 1713d ago )

I like the fact that I can use any addon ssd I buy for the ps5 either in my computer or an external enclosure later if I get a bigger drive. Can't do that with the series x drive

shaun mcwayne1713d ago

But with the size of ps5 you think they could fit a bigger hd some where. It has enough room for a small family in there. Boom another one.

1713d ago
1712d ago
indysurfn1713d ago

Yeah Bro Sony has a proprietary Drive that they designed. It is not standard. They announced that part last year when talking about it being a game changer.

isarai1713d ago

I think you're getting the internal SSD and the expansion option confused

indysurfn1712d ago

Your probably RIGHT! I was wrong on that one! Sorry!

PS-Gamer-19861713d ago (Edited 1713d ago )

@indy
Ofcourse the ssd which is located directly on the motherboard isn't exchangable by consumers. I'm obviously talking about the expansion slot which allows different regular ssd, which later on be widely available from loads of manufacturers

esemce1712d ago

You forget the Vita memory cards ? I know Sony has not. A lesson learned I think as that was a part of it's downfall.

Stellar Blade Story Is Weak Admits Shift Up ; Planned Story DLC Shifted to Sequel

Even Shift Up admits Stellar Blade's story isn't the best, and also confirmed the in-development story DLC has now been shifted to the sequel.

Rangerman12086h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Good to see the devs acknowledge it. Thoguht the gameplay was fun but I could really care less for Eve or any of the characters. Hopefully the sequel will give Eve actual personality.

Marathon Development Update

Marathon was slated to launch on Sept. 23, 2025 across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation, but Bungie will share the new release date in the fall.

Jin_Sakai4h ago

Probably best just cancel it. The game has flop written all over it.

-Foxtrot7h ago

Yeah, you can delay it as much as you want but you ain’t gonna wash that stink off.

Killer2020UK5h ago

It will lessen though and possibly make all the difference if it launches in a state that rectified a lot of the issues people had with it. A LOT of ifs of course.

RaidenBlack3h ago

If you really gotta play ... play the better extraction shooter this year : ARC Raiders

ZeekQuattro7h ago

Delaying the inevitable. Bungie hoping the negative publicity will blow over. 🙄

darthv726h ago

They can't cancel it until a themed controller has been released first... like concord.

ZeekQuattro3h ago

I anxiously wait for that and a Marathon Secret Level episode.

dveio6h ago

If they were absolutely certain about the quality of Marathon, then they had not delayed it just now.

So they've basically just confirmed what everyone, well, a lot of people saw: Marathon is not ready yet, still no soul to be seen.

Tacoboto6h ago

"Doubling down on the Marathon Universe"

They're doubling down on soul, thank goodness this feedback illuminated that for them...

RaidenBlack3h ago

and N4G was littered with comments like : Marathon looks really good, maybe you're a hater and the likes blah blah ... especially under articles which compared it with Arc Raiders ....
