Why Nintendo is Limiting the Super Mario 3D All-Stars' Release

Steve D. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "As there are NO other major Nintendo releases left this year, Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be the only new Nintendo title this holiday season. Demand is sure to be extremely high so logically Nintendo should prepare to sell millions of copies. So why on Earth would Nintendo make Super Mario 3D All-Stars a limited release? The reason…you might find disturbing."

There’s so much wrong with this collection that it’s absurd how much wrong Nintendo did with what should’ve been one of the greatest collection of games of all time on par with Super Mario All Stars

- Collection does not include Super Mario Galaxy 2 or Super Mario 3D Land
- These titles aren’t being remade with the Super Mario Odyssey engine
- It’s being sold for $60 when there’s been little effort in remastering these titles in the face of Crash & Spyro having remake collections that sold for $40
- This collection is being sold only for a limited time so scalpers will be what keep the legacy of this alive when it goes out of print

Nintendo being Nintendo so people shouldn't be surprised. If you've been a fan of them for over a month you should be used to their rubbish by now. Im not a child and I dont like rubbish so I dont support Nintendo in anyway.

Knushwood Butt1354d ago

I dumped Nintendo prior to the release of the Wii.

Never looked back.

No regrets.

Now they just get worse.

Switch is just an overpriced, underpowered port device.

If you look at the trailer on youtube, almost universal likes. I was shocked, the same petulant fans that disliked the last direct for having “nothing” but a Nocturne remake and SMT 5... eat up this $60 ROM dump collection

Atom6661354d ago

I don't even mind that they're not remakes, but this is 100% a "Disney vault" market exploit thing here. I look at the PS collections or MCC and Rare Replay (where there's some, but limited upgrades put into nice affordable packages) and I just smh.

It would have taken little effort to just go ahead and put Galaxy 2 and 3D Land (3ds) in it. That's at least closer to the "3D Allstars" we'd expect.

3D World would have made it a great deal, but even a discount code or something for 3d World (if they really want to release that one seperate with new content) would be nice.

And I really had hoped Galaxy would allow us to drop motion controls.

paulust20021354d ago

Yeah it's pretty disappointing....I think even galaxy 1&2 and 3d land only would have been a better collection if they ain't going to bother remastering mario 64, at least in widescreen.

roadkillers1354d ago

It does not include Mario Galaxy 2? I thought it would.. hmmm odd since many say its better than the original and Nintendo themself stated it was more of a continuation.

I'm okay with that, I just want to play them especially sunshine

I'm okay with price. They are much better than what Spyro and Crash were.

Limited time is confusing, but given that Switch titles sell near 10 million in first couple of months, should be plenty of copies.

I've wanted to try Sunshine for a long time. The only disappointment, if true, is no Galaxy 2. Although 3D World was fun, it was not a full fledge 3D Mario to the likes of 64, Sunshine, Galaxys, or Oddesy.

averagejoe261354d ago

Spyro and Crash were full remakes, 3 games and only $40.

It's suckers like you that eat up anything Nintendo puts out that makes the rest of us rational fans lose out.

roadkillers1354d ago

^ Well keep losing out, I'll enjoy the game while you are whinning..

Knightofelemia1355d ago (Edited 1355d ago )

I never played Sunshine or Galaxy looking forward to those games but Mario 64 should have been spruced up looks wise even modders have been doing that for years. As for a limited run I can understand manufacture issues due to COVID19 or a collectors edition with a figure or some sort of nick knacks added to it. But limiting a game both physical and digital is a dumb move and it's going in the wrong direction. I can see Switches with the digital version of the Mario collection going for stupid prices on Ebay.

Such an anti-consumer company for so many reasons and they always get a pass, pretty much done with them... Games you've bought many times behind a subscription, repackaged games with very little to justify the price, badly done ports with no effort and time limits on purchase. ALSO....NO METROID PRIME TRILOGY!

execution171354d ago

They'd probably half ass that too

CaptainObvious8781354d ago

It's very very refreshing to see ex ninty fans seeing ninty for the money grubbing company that they are.

brando0081354d ago

As someone who owns a PS4, Switch, and gaming PC, I can't believe how anti-consumer Nintendo is. What's crazy is that so many Switch die-hards defend Nintendo or ignore its shortcomings at every turn. The system still does not let you stream Netflix/Prime, the online infrastructure is a joke, 1st-party games that have been out for a long time rarely see sales, and I swear the large breach that happened a few months ago barely left a ripple in the news.

I really love BotW, Odyssey, Smash, Kart, and Splatoon, and look forward to Metroid and BotW2, but the list of compelling exclusives is short (gf plays Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion is still too expensive for me to justify the purchase). Nintendo is saving Galaxy 2 for a separate release which I'm sure will be full price with whatever other Mario games it gets bundled with. It looks like minimal effort was put into the two new collections, though I'd still love to revisit 64 and Galaxy, and finally try Sunshine and 3D World.

Nintendo: "Hey, the games are great and people are desparate for something. Let's create some scarcity to drive up demand and justify the price."

Sorry folks, rant over.

anonymousfan1354d ago

I have PS4, PC and Switch same as you... And I feel exactly the same. Way I will continue to buy some of their products (this collection is a pass though) but I will not start defending their every move like the sheep followers out there.

Awesome to see Bayonetta 2 get over a million and the Xenoblade games to do so well! Good numbers all around. Nice to see Nintendo recover after the Wii U.

I still have a sealed copy of this game. I heard it was going to be a limited release so I never opened it. I wouldn’t exactly call 9mil limited however.

It is highly doubtful this game will increase in value, especially on the level that some were expecting. This is one of those "limited" releases that isn't limited at all, like you said. Getting a sealed version of this and keeping it like that will not net you much profit, I can guarantee it.

Knushwood Butt630d ago

Maybe they limited it to 10 million.

Limited lol

Nintendo get away with it again.

HeliosHex630d ago

Nintendo played us yet again. Fattened up their pockets by using the coveted limited release tactic to gain profits by secretly releasing more than they said was available.
I feel this as bad as insider trading. There's a law broken somewhere here. It doesn't feel right. Bastards never again will I listen to their bs.

Sgt_Slaughter630d ago

Who knew Nintendo could piss someone off just by operating as a business that likes money.

CrimsonWing69629d ago

Are you familiar with the concepts of “bad business ethics” and “damaging the confidence of consumers”?

Making money for your business doesn’t always equate to a company doing what’s right.

Neonridr629d ago (Edited 629d ago )

I mean I'm pretty sure 99% of the people who bought the collection just wanted the games to play again.

Just a hunch though.

HeliosHex629d ago

Lol I wasn't one of them.

brewin629d ago

Well I wouldn't buy something they said was limited but didn't included any limited edition stuff. There was no special box or special edition items included so the writing was on the wall. Its like they were trying the old Disney tactic and telling everyone this would go back in the vault soon. Im more upset that it didn't include the excellent Mario Galaxy 2.

Necr0philiac629d ago

Remember amiibo's or how Nintendo was creating artificial Wii shortages! The Wii dominated the news without even having any good games. Parents most of the time are clueless and listen to what media deems popular or sold out.

It was stupid to make it a limited release to begin with. No matter, it is pretty easy to find used copies for people who missed it and want the collection. It is a fine collection, especially having Mario Galaxy which is a pain to emulate because of the controls.

brewin629d ago

Can they just do the Zelda collection already?! Yes we know Mario is popular. But damnit I want a Zelda collection of all the handheld games, including the 3ds remakes of Ocarina and Majora along with the great and underappreciated Link Between Worlds.
