World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is already dead to me

“World of Warcraft: Shadowlands,” will be released before the end of this endless year, bringing players of the 16-year-old MMO to Azeroth’s realm of death. But this writer is not impressed.

I think this brings up some good points. It did get a little old being the Champion of Azeroth, but you can't have a character do all the things ours have over 16 years and remain the no-name traveler guy. At some point, you've either done enough epic stuff that you gain recognition, or the game hasn't been giving you real threats to defeat. I think this might be a tipping point, though. We're going into the land of the dead. How do you come back from that?

Germaximus1393d ago

I think it's a dumb excuse. The story is always adapting and new. Just cuz you're always a hero that doesn't actually save the world for good doesn't mean it isn't awesome when you do save it.

Even realistically, you can never save the world forever.

I gotta say, the final raid in Legion made me feel pretty cool. I wonder if we could get something like FFXI and FFXIV, though. Take us to a different time in Azeroth and update everything. A guy can dream, I guess.

lol I can't wait for Shadowlands. It might be disappointing but I don't actually expect it to be. It looks great. I really enjoyed BFA though, content and story wise.

Jiub1393d ago

Yeah, I'm definitely excited for Shadowlands. I think BFA is suffering from being at the end right now, but it'll be more positively received in the future.

Hasn't every expansion made you the center of the story to be the hero. Just no one else actually sees those dialogues or cinematic instances most of the time. Think the last one was back with the gate opening in that desert area whose name I forget. Otherwise, the head honco's of the factions seem to forget what you've done before as soon as the quest line ends.

Wow! The author gives narrative to the grind of Classic, so I'll give them that.

Jiub1393d ago

I never got to play WoW when it first came out. I did play Classic and the difference between that and retail was immense. I definitely agree with the author on how you felt like part of the world instead of having it revolve around you. I am tempted to go back and level another character before pre-patch.

I thought Lich Kind did pretty good there until about halfway through after the forsaken take their revenge. Also did good at bringing a more cinematic feel to series.

But in the end, it was still just the same old thing. Do some quest, be treated like a king for the duration of that quest line, go back to normal fetch and grind.

Ranking Every World of Warcraft Cinematic Worst to Best

BLG writes: "To celebrate the announcement of Dragonflight, the latest World of Warcraft expansion, we decided to rewatch all the game’s cinematics and rank them from worst to best. Including the latest one, of course. In fact, we purposely waited until the new expansion got announced before putting together this list because we wanted to see how the Dragonflight trailer stacked up against all the other WoW cinematics. Spoiler alert: it’s not amazing, but it's not the worst one either."

Shadowlands' first year was so disappointing I've given up on WoW

From PC Gamer: "When Shadowlands first launched a year ago, it felt like World of Warcraft was on a comeback streak. Battle for Azeroth, the previous expansion, had been one of the most contentious in the MMO's history—even if Blizzard did improve some of the features that players hated. But Shadowlands was a clean slate. A chance to press reset and push WoW into a new era, all while tearing the veil off of one of Azeroth's most fascinating realms: the afterlife. There were new zones to explore, new gear to obtain, and a whole smattering of new progression systems to learn and tinker with. It was an exciting time.

Fast forward one year, though, and I couldn't feel more differently about World of Warcraft."

Cool story. I loved Legion, loved BfA, and have loved Shadowlands. WoW is great, it's players like you that have changed.
