Developer Interview: “Steam Is Nothing But Hot Air.”

TGG says: "We interviewed Pepijn Rijnders from Sakari Games, and he had some opinions to share about the state of the videogame industry, the state of indie games and Steam as a platform to sell them on."

I'm impressed on how well stuff sell on the Switch. The console already have a respectable library, but even stuff that would look subpar even on a mobile plattorm like iOS or Android sell well.

The devs are right about one thing though. Steam is not the golden ticked to sucess it once was. It's a side effect of having openning up the market for any game no matter how subpar it looks. But let's be honestly, if Steam hadn't oppened it's gates we wouldn't even have this article complaining about it. Because with their level of quality Sakari Games would not be one of the developers feature in the platform in the first place.

bloodyspasm1438d ago

Yeah, and that's AFTER the golden years have passed where any indie game did well on it no matter the quality, as long as the price was right.

It's common sense to be on a new store as soon as possible so more people see you. I wonder if the same will be teue for Xbox Series X or PS5, as I assume both digital stores will already be full with titles from the previous generation.

bloodyspasm1438d ago

I don't think there is anything wrong with their games, I'm sure there is an audience for it (especially because of the low price). Quality wise I think these are games that would have passed the Steam greenlight, but that's the issue: most games would.

We've moved on from the times were only well funded studios can make games that actually work because the tools to make them are so readily available.

Though there is certainly something to be said for EPIC game Store's approach on being picky which games get in. Quality over quantity.

(Yet on the other hand, they're part of the problem: no one buys games if they're being given away for free)

Rachel_Alucard1438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

The ironic part is curation doesn't magically thwart bad or mediocre games.

http://imgur.com/a/1MeRN3R

I'm also sure they don't care about quality at all given the fact they are targeting games who have decent wishlist numbers on Steam instead of actually looking good.

Vits1438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

It's not really about having anything wrong with them. It's just that they are not up to the level of the stuff that got released on Steam way back when Valve picked each game that would be featured in their store. But they would pass through Green Light and I think they actually started there.

About Epic I don't think it's about quality with them either. Is more about getting games that have some buzz around. That's why they focus so much on crowdfunded projects and know developers.

However as you said they also give a lot of stuff way for free and that devalue games more than any Steam Summer Sale or Humble Bundle could. Especially because they even give way stuff that they payed for the exclusivity - not that I'm complaining about the free games, but they disrupt the market.

give it another year and switch saturation will affect sales

bloodyspasm1438d ago

I feel the market is already pretty saturated on Switch, and the store isn't exactly "browsing-friendly", but luckily Switch owners are still very hungry for content.

Fishy Fingers1438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

Strange, normally when I see "something something" it means a quote....

Rachel_Alucard1438d ago

He seems to misunderstand what wishlist numbers mean. While it does help to advertise it to the front page it also is for people to know when it goes on sale. You are not getting big numbers at launch, you get them during sale periods now. That's just how PC is. Even EGS won't fix sale counts regardless of your popularity, they just pay out of pocket instead.

bloodyspasm1438d ago

The sad thing is that steam requires an insanely high number of wishlists before they will actively spotlight your upcoming game. Numbers only very few indie games can achieve (50K) and it costs them a ton in marketing efforts.

Rachel_Alucard1438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

The industry will fix itself over time like it has in the past. I think alot of costs and effort these indie studios put forward will never work like they want it too. They spend way too much money out of pocket on something that has no chance to make back the amount spent. Like I've seen at least 5 studios shutdown even after taking the EGS deal, so this means they spent way more then they could ever afford to make back. I think AA, A, and B games are the real way forward for the industry personally. With indie games there's no accountability, proper deadlines, business sense, or quality control for a lot of them. They do it because they want to make a good game even if it costs them the funding to make more afterwards.

Father__Merrin1438d ago

goto Epic games store simple as. steam are ripping off developers. i hope more and more of the bigger games also release on epic like many of them ftp games like path of exhile etc and world of tanks

Rachel_Alucard1438d ago (Edited 1438d ago )

Epic is a temporary thing, it's not a permanent solution and Epic can't fix the saturation and options users have at their disposal. The only thing Epic is doing is paying out of pocket to offset sales. But that doesn't have anything to do with the cut. If Valve and everyone else lowered their cut we would have no change in sales because people just aren't buying them in the first place for that cut to even matter anymore.

Seafort1437d ago (Edited 1437d ago )

If you think Steam is ripping off developers that means you think Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA, GoG, etc are ripping off developers too.

They all have the industry standard cut of 70/30. It is Epic that is the outlier and undercutting everyone else.

The 88/12 cut won't last forever. It's unsustainable in the long term. Epic just doesn't have the influence to change anything. They will go bust before anyone follows them.

I will wait for all Epic exclusives to come to my preferred store. I just got Metro Exodus Gold Edition for £21 on Humble. Is that good or bad I paid less than half price for a new game on Steam? You tell me. I will keep doing it too. Win-win for me.

It’s evaporated water, actually.

hehe, true, but that didn't have the same ring to it :)

Should have happened a long time ago. People wanting refunds after 50 hours in game.

fsfsxii9h ago

Pc gamers will take this as an excuse to pirate things

KyRo8h ago

I'm not sure why you're getting disgrees. Whilst not all PC gamers are petty, an awful lot of them are lol

Crows908h ago

Entirely untrue. Not any more petty than console gamers. The only large difference is console gamers don't have much of a choice.

qalpha9h ago

Daily reminder that 'TheGamer' is a corporate-generated, anti-gamer, anti-consumer, clickbait web site. They are mostly A.I. generated articles that villainize gamers. They provide nothing positive and actively try to provoke and divide the community through extreme view points and politics. Do not give them any clicks.

Inverno9h ago

Only scumbags? As if people don't play their games on console put in the most amount of hours and return it to GameStop and trade it in for another game. But also how many people are actually do this? And what games have been allowed to be refunded?

DustMan8h ago

You can refund any game you've purchased as long as it hasn't been longer than two weeks, and you've played less than 2 hours. I wish they would change it to 3 hours because some RPG's have so much exposition that you may only get an hour total of complete gameplay. That's my only knock on it. I've refunded plenty of stuff I was just curious to try. I typically stay away from Early Access titles which are the only ones affected by this policy change.

Inverno8h ago

Apparently early access doesn't count, only complete games with a play early preorder bonus.

Gaming4Life19818h ago

I definitely know if I want a refund in 2 hours.

SegaSaturn6698m ago

I never liked refunding anything. Even if a film is bad, i dont want my money back. Sometimes things just aren't for me, and it's not the creator's fault necessarily.

Cacabunga1d 4h ago

Hopefully doesn’t take them a complete gen to release it

TheColbertinator23h ago

Good. Something not boring, not one of those "make your own game" crap and also on Steam would be nice.

Stopac21h ago

I too like to look for things in the wrong places.
