The Xbox One didn't do terribly this console generation, but the PlayStation 4 took first. With the Xbox Series X, there's a new opportunity. The Xbox will rise again!

In order to make a "comeback" or "rise", you needed to be on top first but since that has never been the case of Xbox, there is no such thing as a "comeback" or "rise again".

A more realistic approach could have been: "10 reasons Xbox could do better this time".

For most of the Xbox360/PS3 era Xbox were on top actually. It was only in the very end PS3 beat them on sales and not by a large margin.

360 was on top for about 3 years (ps3 globally outsold 360 though from day1) then they blanked their userbase the last 3 years which wouldn't have been a problem as much if their xbox one launch line up was epic and full of AAA which sadly it never got for 6 years minus a few gems here and there of course.

It can't go any worse for MS, they haven't been at the table since 2011 really, those last 2 or 3 years were awful AAA wise from their main studios during the end of the 360.
One s/x equally poor this gen also with AAA studios.
So no doubt they'll have learned some lessons.
Either way hope all 3 do well cause its all good for us gamers plus it makes the wait for the big AAA blockbusters to come along if all 3 firing on all cylinders.

I'd like to believe that's what they meant, but cheatcc is pretty hardcore in their bias for Xbox. The description alone reads almost like it's a cult. 1. They are not going to deliver exclusives in two years span.
2. They are focusing on services and monetisation.
3. They are always pooling the wool showing non game play demos. It happened with Senua's Sacrifice 2 and a video of another project from Ninja Theory.
4. The Same scheme of Halo Gears Forza all over again.
5. Excessive production of Puff pieces articles, hardball articles and Yellow press or pigheaded marketing.
6. Massive paid sites, trolls, bounty streamers, account advertisers. (Toxic propaganda)
7. Intensive bribing with free merchandise in exchange of positive reviews, etc.

Does anyone find it strange that the most valuable company, hasn't made the same effort as the other two? Or the same effort their competitor did in turning things around where it counts which is games? With one of them being the game of the decade. And, this valuable trillion dollar company's only answer is a subscription and no launch exclusives for next gen.

Yep. I look forward to what they do to make a "comeback." Just as I was excited to see what Nintendo did to comeback from the Wii U, and just like I was excited to see what Sony did with its PS4 comeback after bleeding away its dominant market share the gen prior.

I do love the idea that any comeback would of course just mean they would reinstitute only the negative moves from the past. That's a new angle.

That trillion dollar company is finally doing what we asked them to do and invest in games, studios, and more consumer-friendly options. I say let's see how it goes.

To be fair, MS didn't try to beat Sony to the market with the 360. That was a circumstance of the deal they had with Nvidia screwing them over when they needed to drop the price of the OGXbox.

MS did indeed release the 360 with the known RROD issue, and that's why they offered the 3 year warranty to avoid having a class action lawsuit which would have publicly shown their negligence in court, and likely caused them much more in legal costs, than what they eventually set aside, but their motivation wasn't beating Sony to market.

Sony wasn't even going to release so much later either, but delays in the Blu-Ray laser production causing there to not be enough yield made them delay their release.

As far as the overall question you pose, there's a lot of hypothetical there that may not come to pass. Especially on the hardware front. I think the services behind subs would likely not come back in the same form, because they're looking at other value added reasons to sell those subs, and MS seems to be restructuring subs a lot differently than they had in the 360 days.

I think the fans of gaming pretty much stay in the same camp or just own all platforms, I can't see anything different next gen to this.
People will upgrade to the same company they prefer now. I can't see anything pulling fans either way at the moment

@Thunder, a come back doesn't necessarily equate to being the top dog. It could mean just for something or someone being a worthy contender. Any unbiased gamer knows that the XB1 was not a contender with games. Not even close. However, the 360 and PS3 gen was pretty competitive.

On topic, MS simply needs to let their studios make great games. Without quality games it will sputter. Make great games and they will come...

They dropped the ball this gen. I loved the original, thought 360 was great, but not as great, and it started resting on its laurels near the end of the generation. This gen though, eh. Weak hardware out of the gate, 1st and 2nd party content ranging from great to garbage, though not nearly enough of it either way, terrible launch. The list goes on.

It seems like they're learning from that though. It shouldn't have taken an entire new generation to address it, but it does seem like they getting themselves back on track.

I think next gen the series x and the series s will be great consoles that do very well. A budget option and a option for those wanting a little more out of a console. Plus the largest collection of 1st party studios in gaming history will keep gamers happy with a steady flow of exclusive content. In 2018 they invested 10 billion dollars in studios and partnerships to bring exclusives to the Xbox brand. And when they finally deliver, they'll finally be doing what many people have said they should be doing all gen. That will help them going forward, but I feel the total lack of commitment to the brand this gen is going to be more harmful to them than anything Sony can do.

Like Phil or not. Think he's a liar or not. People can look at this gen and see what's been delivered. That isn't much, so when people are still skeptical about the future, they have good reason to be. The promises wear thin over time, and while he may not be a liar in the end, it doesn't mean people are going to keep waiting for it. As a consumer, they don't have to wait when other companies are delivering, and not bothering with the promises and PR talk for years on end.

When they start delivering, then people will start to become interested again. They may be interested now, but this gen is still working against them, and outside the gaming forums, no one knows or cares who Spencer is. If they were satisfied with what they got from Xbox this gen, they'll probably be satisfied next gen. If they felt they weren't getting much out of Xbox this gen, then they may look elsewhere. For all of Spencer's talk, and promises, he's mostly just talking to the rather marginal group of the hardcore gaming community, and he talks so much because he knows that can trickle down into the mainstream, and hopefully, that will influence those who don't follow this stuff much. But, people's thoughts on this gen are going to be more of a force for their next gen purchases than the marketing from executives, and Sony, at every turn this gen, has been on point in getting their message out there where people beyond the forums see it.

i really hope they do. as much as i love my ps, i’d be nice to have more options and games to play. i got a xb1 2 years ago, and i liked playing gears’ horde mode when i was bored or didn’t feel like playing anything on my ps4. that being said, that was pretty much the only thing i played on my xb1, and eventually stopped playing because it wasn’t worth spending the money on xb live for that one game(which was already on the decline in terms of player base). if a console has good games then i’m more than happy to support them.
